The people who run this place know nothing about heath or wellness and simply don't care. They care only about money. First they clearly told me they were all in network with my insurance, and then after the acupuncture session they told me my practitioner could not accept insurance, but somehow nobody knew about it beforehand. I realized too late that this place is utterly mismanaged and incompetent. The manager said it could take weeks or longer to get things straight on their end. Since they know ZERO about acupuncture, they do now know or care that it is useless to start acupuncture and then wait weeks or months for a follow-up. Then they refused to let me make a follow up appointment with any other acupuncturist that actually could actually accept my insurance. This place is shady, duplicitous, and without ethics, and I would highly recommend you stay away. read more

The administrative staff and desk clerics at this business are rude, toxic and simply unhappy to be there. They were rude to me when I went in to ask basic questions about insurance in order to start acupuncture, but they didn't want or know how to help me get my insurance questions answered. However, I persisted and finally got some of my questions answered. Even after being a customer for over six months, when I asked about insurance cover for massage they continued to say they wouldn't use insurance, even though I have insurance coverage for that service. They finally figured it out, yet their rudeness and uncooperativeness with some basic things never changed as their administrative business culture is toxic--it stems from the toxicity of the owner/business manager. I should have taken their lack of customer service as information to seek service elsewhere sooner, but I'm happy I finally left to spend my money at other businesses that are more professional and friendly with their customers. Additional comments in response to the business manager's reply below: "Our administrative staff has been known to for going the extra mile to help our clients. From what I can see there were massage benefits added to your profile and emailed to you. We are sorry that you didn't get the communication." In my experience, the administrative staff has not gone the extra mile to help me in any way. The experience that I had with their service, to include not taking ownership of their actions, is highlighted in the business manager's response when he says, "we are sorry you didn't get the communication." Nowhere in my original complaint did I say I did not get the final communication, in fact I said, "they finally figured it out." The problem is that it took me multiple times saying I have insurance coverage, and had to ask over and over for them to include my insurance so I could schedule a massage appointment without the expectation of paying for the massage in full. They told me over and over that I did not have insurance coverage when I clearly do. Regardless, the point of my complaint is to inform perspective consumers. If you, perspective or new consumers, have any doubts of Awaken Wellness's administrative staff's professionalism, you are not alone, and I urge you to find a different place with better administrative customer service. You'll be better off in the long run. You'll find your Zen somewhere else!! read more

I chose Awaken b/c Dr Sanford Lee now practices acupuncture there. He is outstanding, not just for acupuncture, but also for treating my aches and pains. He is proficient in multiple disciplines. I have been seeing him every week for 15 months (previously at another studio until April 2022). Awaken is 19 miles from my home and I don't drive, so I need to hire someone to drive me there. That should indicate how much I value Dr Lee's treatment. Jenny, the Office Manager, is also amazing. She capably juggles the non-stop phone calls and walk-ins, always with patience and calm. When I was in a pinch, she miraculously managed--several times--to find me an appointment when the online app and the other staff at the desk couldn't. She even stays on top of emails and appointment requests in the evening, when the office is closed. In spite of these two exceptional individuals, I only gave Awaken four stars b/c the appointments are shorter and the overall atmosphere there feels less relaxed than at the studio I used to go to. We felt an uncomfortable feeling, like that of the popular girl who smiles to your face and talks behind your back with the office in general. Yes they were nice, but if felt off. I only continued to go because my acupuncturist worked here and I truly liked one of their Yoga instructors and the message therapist. Customer service was good most of the time. Once I was sick and didn't hear my phone to answer their calls. The first message was a reminder that my appointment had started, the second was a notice that I had missed my appointment and needed to pay the $80 or $90 missed appointment fee. Gee I knew about the missed appointment fee, but to have it shoved in my face - not very professional and seemed very greedy. Not centered on health, but money was the feeling I got! I also noticed that the one time I called for an appointment less then 24 hours that my insurance was charged for an emergency visit - really! A few month's ago my acupuncturist left to a new office and I followed him as I had previously. Two month's later I would say this office's true colors came out in the form that they made a complaint about my acupuncturist to the Dept of Health AFTER he had been gone for some time. Really! And they provided them with my name, Last straw in my opinion! I would have gone back to them for workshops, message therapy, yoga - now I won't step foot in that place. Yes the economy is slow and the acupuncturist took clients with him when he left, but you had the option to keep him as part of the staff and my guess is that my family is not the only one that he brought to your practice in the first place! I want to give this place a 5 so badly. The place is clean and really immaculately kept and decorated. Lots of literature about services offered and generally a good vibe to the place. I have been to AW a couple of times and had wonderful massage services. Ondine, girl, you are the best. She not only gave me a terrific massage, she talked to me about a specialized service I was interested in, gave me some pointers and even emailed me the next day with some book suggestions. THAT is going the extra mile for clients. I will be booking and booking with Ondine in the near future. Having said all this that would lead you to believe a 5 star rating is in order, I think there's an issue brewing at the front desk. Reception has not been ideal, whether it was with me calling in to confirm the appt or even showing up on the day of. With a place this nice and organized, there really should be a strong admin at the front desk with a very positive/healing attitude. I did not experience positivity in confirming my appt or signing in on the day of.... just kind of a rushed-hurried-annoyed attitude. At the end of my massage, I returned to the front desk and asked - is there anything I need to sign or do before I leave? "No." Oh... okay... no goodbye, thank you, see you again, would you like to rebook, etc. Just "no." I expect more from a place of this caliber. read more

My wife and I got into yoga a few months ago. I will say, it is not at all what I expected. We have now been to 2 different locations with different yogi teaching. They are very different. We started at awaken wellness in Columbia. At first I was sore in each and every one of my muscles after class. Kat worked us pretty hard, and it was a beginners class. Kat is one of those people that is very warm and sweet and positive; the ones that I would normally like to modulate their air flow (think it through), but not Kat she is very genuine. She makes the classes fun and rewarding. I really do love it. My wife and son go regularly for acupuncture and both are very happy with the results. I myself have had a mixed bag with the acupuncture. First, Kevin is very good at what he does and he is a stand up guy, but I believe that not everything works for everybody. He helped me a lot with migraines and a few minor muscle injuries. My wife and I have also had massage from Ondine. She is pretty darned cool and did a fantastic job on my back and legs. I love this place primarily because of the practitioners, Julia (acupuncturist) and Carla (massage therapist). Both ladies are knowledgeable and care about the clients that they service. I ended up coming here because of Carla. She came highly referred by another spa that she used to work at. Because of her, I was introduced to Julia. Which was the best part. Julia is very warm and loves what she does. I will have to agree with the other reviews, when dealing with payments and funds. I had an issue with an acupuncture package that I purchased. They told me I had used all of the visits when I had not. In the end, it worked out for me but I could clearly see how others could review this place negatively based on their business practices. I would suggest that if you purchase a package of services, to keep up with the number of times you visit. read more

I attended a free group acupunture session in early April and loved it. Since that point I've been going weekly for individual acupuncture. I find the sessions, people, and atmosphere at the center very relaxing and welcoming. I look forward to going every week. I like that they offer workshops as well. I'm going to try a reiki workshop that is coming up soon and look forward to trying the different types of yoga as well. They take insurance for acupuncture which is a plus, but if you don't have insurance group acupuncture is about $20 and the workshops are usually pretty affordable too, around $10. The best part about this place is when I go in for acupuncture I don't feel like a random client, or just another person on the table. I know that Jen and Stephanie deeply believe and care about what they do so it makes the process that much better. read more

I have been to Awaken Wellness for several massages over the last few years. I have always worked with Ondine, but today I had Elias. They are both great, but I have a problem area that Elias really worked the way I needed. He really focused on it and used different techniques to massage it. I will definitely be back to see him, and would be happy to have Ondine again as well. I have already recommended Elias to a friend and she has an appointment with him on Monday! I have tried several of the services offered at Awaken Wellness. The acupuncture is great. The yoga is a bit less strenuous than at somewhere like Charm city Yoga, but still good and definitely more relaxing. But the real reason I'm writing this is because Jennifer Coyne gives the best massage I've ever had. She is a certified PT and she really gets after it. After my pregnancy my hips were so tight pain was radiating down my leg and as a result my knee and my ankle were starting to have issues as well. After my first massage with Jennifer I had so much improvement. I wanted to go back and give her a big hug. It was the most painful massage, but my hips and sciatica feel so much better. Two more massages later and I no longer have pain throbbing down my leg or trouble getting up from certain positions. Some of my friends prefer to see a male massage therapist, and all I can tell them is they're missing out. Jennifer gives the best massage I've ever had. She really knows what she's doing. It's not the most relaxing, but I've never had such amazing results. Worth the money, the time and the pain. I've gone here for a couple of years now. I've never had any problems with reception; they're always very nice. I got pregnant right after I'd purchased a 3 massage package which could not be used on prenatal massages and was set to expire prior to when I would be able to use it again. Management let me reinstate the massages even after they'd expired and I really appreciated that. read more

Average. I got a groupon for four yoga classes. The receptionist was nice and the interior seems nice. I only got to see the yoga room. They provide mats and blocks and everything else you need. The lighting is a bit harsh for a yoga studio and the instructor was not to my liking. Other than that it seems ok. They have a pay as you go deal and you can sign up for classes online. The schedule of classes is not the greatest but I managed to fit one beginner class into my week. read more

I have nothing but positive experiences to share about Awaken Wellness. I began seeing Sung Mi following a miscarriage in March. She was incredibly helpful and supportive. I have seen her on a near weekly basis for the last few months and now I am happily 20 weeks pregnant with twins. The appointments are a great time to relax and focus on my health. I really like this place. I have gotten accupuncture from Jen and massage from Ondine. Both Jen and Ondine are fantastic. The treatment rooms are very nice. I have also taken beginner yoga classes with Barb and Kat. Both are very good. Different styles - Barb very laid back and Kat has engery to spare. I only wish the class schedule matched mine. So I'll start with the positive. I had a massage earlier today from Carla, and she was awesome. She gave more attention to my problem areas and worked them well, and gave me some exercises to do to help alleviate some of the pain. It's a shame she works here because I would definitely go back to her! I have to agree with a few of the other complaints people have had about Awaken Wellness. Their massage therapists are great, but their management is anything but. For a business that's supposed to care about their clients health and help them feel better, they really don't care when you're not feeling well. They charged me $150 after I missed an acupuncture appointment because I was hospitalized and wasn't able to call and cancel my appointment 24 hours in advance. I tried calling them after I was released to explain what had happened and they could care less. They refused to refund my money even after I had explained myself and apologized. It wasn't until I called a few more times that the CFO decided to give me a credit. Initially I was told that the $150 would be credited to my account and that made things a bit better. So I called the other day to book a massage appointment using my credit and was told that there was no credit on my account and that they had to talk to the CFO again about it. This time, the CFO only agreed to credit my account $85 to cover the massage, not the full amount I was originally told. What's frustrating the most about this is that the CFO wouldn't even contact me directly to talk to me about it even after they said he would, so I had to relay messages through their receptionists. I won't be returning here because I think they have incredibly poor customer service and don't treat their customers with respect. They seem to care about their bottom dollar more than their customers health and well being. read more

Love this place :o) After 6 months of misery due to an IUD that left me with a two week or constant cycle I went here as a last ditch effort to try acupuncture and TCM before giving up and going back to the doctor. I decided on Awaken Wellness because I figured the goal was to get a regular cycle again-which they appear to specialize in (albeit for the goal of fertility-whereas my goal was regaining my sanity). I set up an appointment with Sungmi and explained the situation. She was AMAZING. We did one or two acupuncture only sessions and then added in the TCM. I immediately started noticing a difference and within a few visits I was back to an actual cycle. My pocketbook also truly appreciated that the moment I had gotten one full regular cycle she gave me one last round of herbs and said I was good to go and didn't need any more sessions but was welcome to come back for a relaxing treatment or a quarterly acupuncture maintenance. I was a little skeptical that the results would have a lasting effect after such a short time (I think six visits total) but 6 or so months later I'm still good to go and couldn't be happier. I even went in for one 'just for fun' appt a few weeks ago after realizing how long it'd been and felt much clearer mentally so I'll be keeping up with the quarterly visits from now on. If I ever decide to get pregnant I'll definitely be giving acupuncture a try to increase my chances; based on my brief 5 minute sits in reception listening to other guests this appears to be the bulk of their practice and based a lot on recommendations from others so they must be working! Along with the amazing results, the actual appointments were a breeze too. Reception is always very friendly and helpful and appts were always on time. Sungmi is a great 'needler'...very gentle and on the off chance there was a pressure point she needed to hit that was a bit 'uncomfy' she would warn me and have me do a quick breath out so it didn't hurt. And for those of you scared of needles, don't worry-if you're going in for a relaxing treatment you won't feel pain with the needles, the 'ouchy' ones were one pin on maybe half of my six visits...and again, even the ouchy ones weren't really bad going in because she's such a great needler. I also appreciated that each appt she would take my pulse and give little recommendations on diet or lifestyle that would help. I've been trying to follow an ayurvedic lifestyle here and there to cope with stress so it was a good gentle reminder to get back on track with things like quitting coffee, no matter how delicious it is, and keeping up with exercise. I also took advantage of one of the free yoga classes with Olga and really enjoyed it. I'm sort of a habitual beginner because I always just take a class here or there without ever getting into a constant practice and her beginner class still felt like I was learning and getting a good session in. read more

You cannot go wrong at Awaken Wellness (AW)! The location and waiting area are Zen-ful. The office staff are super-cool. Even though AW is not that close to my home, I've tried yoga at other places and never found it a holistically satisfying experience.
