I used to come here all the time as a kid and I've watched the downfall of this place, recently I decided to take my grandfather here in hopes they got better and guess what. They didn't. It costs 70 dollars for 4 people and all the food was cold, tasteless, and undercooked, the waitress came by once to give us drinks and never came back, everything in there was dirty and needed clean, I would not come back here at all, if your looking for a good Chinese buffet go down to Lancaster and go to their buffet, it's 10 dollars per person and the food is actually good. read more

Cheng's is an Asian buffet. It's just not any good. The food looks like the same thing. It's impossible to tell some things apart. There's also not many healthy options. I went for the buffet. It's about $8 for lunch. This was cheap and there was a reason. It's not good. There's stuff that shouldn't be there. I'm sure you know the kind of stuff I'm talking about. This is a Chinese buffet with mashed potatoes and pizza. It has few good vegetarian options. There's no kind of tofu. It's another bad experience at a Chinese buffet. Nothing Fantastic....Average Chinese Buffet. Shrimp have No Flavor, Food is not restocked in a timely manner. Quality is somewhat lacking in the prep of dishes, very run of the mill Chinese with lots of Ohio thrown in. But the prices are great, and on Fridays they add Lemon Dill Salmon to the menu and it is great, and on Saturdays they add Crab Legs, and price of buffet remains the same so kudos to them for Effort. It is definitely worth the money, and choices are there, just don't expect an Great Chinese Buffet when this one is very average for the most part. read more

We arrived at 7:30pm and half of the buffet was empty and food remaining in the buffet was over cooked by the heated pans. When I asked if they would bring out more food they said they were out. They did not have hot & sour or wonton no soup, general TSO, or dumplings, just look at the pictures below. We will never go back. read more

I haven't been to a Chinese buffet since before the pandemic. We decided to go here after a day of shopping. Lunch special was 8.99 and it was worth every penny! They had all of my favorites that I've been missing and craving. General tsos, black pepper chicken, dumplings, lo mein, spring rolls, etc. all the usual American standard Chinese dishes! I did not eat the Mongolian food but my mom did and said it was delicious! We will be returning for sure! read more

Buffets are a strange beast. I feel like it's not just the buffet that's at fault... It's also me. I'm just bad at curating a plate of food. Every time I'm at a buffet I end up with The most random assemblage of delicacies... loitering under a heat lamp. The breakfast club of foods that would never normally ever socialize on any single plate together but found themselves in the company of me in the library at Changs buffet. Today my plate was filled with one stuffed mushroom, a hard-boiled egg, a few pieces of canned pineapple and a hot sugar doughnut, a piece of fish, and bacon covered crab sticks. I spent most of my time at the buffet sampling one piece of anything that looked pretty good. By the time I got to the table I was already full. I used to go here pre-COVID pandemic because its so close to my house. The food isnt the best but not horrible. So, when they reopened during the pandemic (after the state allowed them to of course), I thought I would give them a shot for lunch. You are no longer allowed to serve yourself. The waitress holds your plate, follows you around the buffet and dishes up what you tell her to and when you are done, she hands you the plate. Ok, kinda weird but I get it. What I saw next disgusted me to the point I will never return, and that rarely happens with me. The employees were wearing gloves. However, they would never change their gloves appropriately. After I got my food, my waitress went outside and assisted the other employees in washing windows. Several times, I watched her go from washing exterior windows with soap and water and whatever other chemical is in the bucket, to coming inside, touching napkins that the silverware was rolled in, to touching customers plates and other surfaces causing MASSIVE cross-contamination. My wife and I are front-line healthcare workers and we change our gloves after touching different things. I immediately paid my bill, left and placed a call to the Licking County Health Department. read more

Used to love the place, not sure what happened. Staff are like a bunch of angsty teenagers. Rude and irritable. Heavy sighing and lots of attitude over simple questions. They are never happy to see you and don't provide any real customer service to speak of. Makes the experience far more unpleasant than it ever should be in any restaurant. What's more American than a Chinese Buffet? Row upon row of batter-dipped, deep-fried delights, steaming platters piled high with vegetable lo mein and beef teriyaki and szechuan chicken. Foods shoved on skewers, or submerged in sauces, or stuffed and served on the half-shell. Add all the requisite Western idiosyncrasies like pizza, fried chicken, and soft-serve, and it's easy to see why we've all fallen in love with All-You-Can-Eat "Asian" food. I'm native to Newark, and Cheng's has always been my basis for Chinese Buffet criteria. So far, Capital City hasn't even come close. Potluck always appeals to me - I'm a great lover of appetizers, small plates, and variety - and this place is the perfect venue for it. The interior is tranquil, a sparkling chandelier reflects cool blue neon in a ceiling recess above the tables, and Asian touches pepper the walls. More importantly, these booths are actually comfortable all the way through 3 (or 4, or 5) plates of pleasure. It's not just a diversity of mealtime options that makes Cheng's my buffet champion, it's the selection and substance. I usually start on the side with the classics, just a spoonful or two of the following: stir-fried mushrooms and mixed vegetables, szechuan chicken and broccoli, grilled shrimp, a skewer of teriyaki or barbecue beef, sweet and sour pork, a stuffed crab or creamy clam dip, all topped off with mussels and crab legs. They're smallish and sloppy and it's a struggle to eat them, but I never refuse shellfish. My latest visit was last Father's Day, and the man of the hour made a beeline to the custom stir-fry counter with his first plate. He always starts his feasting with a personalized potpourri of his favorites, freshly tossed together and fried before our eyes by a chef in their open kitchen. Sounds tasty, doesn't it? Father knows best. The husband prefers helpings of plain steamed rice, proteins, and fried foods, while I usually head to the deep-fry side for my second helping. Over there you'll find little fried shrimps, chicken drumsticks, crab rangoon, and sugary chinese dumplings. They also have mozzarella sticks, mac and cheese bites, and tater tots, but we're not here for that crap. Ok, maybe just a couple tater tots, no-one's looking. This side also contains cups of chinese soups (hot & sour, wonton, egg drop), if you like them luke-warm and lacking in spices. The dessert section is a bit of a disaster, but you should be running on fumes at this point. I suggest you spurn the water-logged peaches and pears, pass up the puddings, and opt for ice cream sundaes. Grab yourself some immediately melty soft-serve (Oo! Chocolate and vanilla twist!), shake on some sprinkles and spoon yourself some chocolate syrup. If you still have a sweet tooth, there's always the fortune cookie. Did I mention that they're in Spanish? All joking aside, mine read "Otras dias, otros maneras." But what else could you expect from the ultimate Americanization of Asian food? For Newark, OH....this is a very good Chinese buffet (boo-fay, as I say). The location (strip mall) where Chengs is located is fairly new and very nice. The restaurant certainly looks like a Chinese restaurant with much Asian decor. The buffet is stocked full of both fried and grilled dishes. The general Tso's chicken is one of my favorites here, as well as the hot & sour soup. During some evenings of the week, they even have crab legs. I tried a few last night and they were "just okay." Kind've small and difficult to get the meat out. (But I don't judge the entire place by a few frustrating sea-spiders!) There is also a small sushi selection, if you enjoy that. It's hard to find good food in Newark, much less good Chinese food. We've tried several places that were total failures. Failures like I need to scrub my tongue and have my memory erased while internally wondering how can Panda Express actually taste better than these places. I've been working up the nerve to try Cheng's for a couple of months just out of outright fear. Chinese buffets are always a crap shoot. I'm happy to say I didn't walk away with food poisoning, but I also didn't necessarily walk away raving. But, at $7.99 for lunch, I'm not complaining too much. The food selection is pretty minimal, although thankfully it was all fresh. There is a small sushi section that had some variations of California rolls and a couple tuna and salmon sashimi items. There were some stuffed into tofu pouches which were overly sweet which I was not a fan of. When it comes to Chinese, I will make the trip out into the city and probably keep this as a quick/ cheap option if I'm too lazy to drive extensively. read more

Wish I could rate at half a star.. This place may have had a good start at some point, but it really left me feeling disgusted and angry that money gets wasted on this place. The disrespectful ill treatment of customers is beyond comprehension. The waitresses were very rude, whenever they were asked for anything and they expressed what a great bother and inconvenience it was to them. I don't get it! If they don't want to work there, why don't they just not? The food was cool, some things were actually warm at best. None of them knew how to speak english. I had an easier time speaking spanish to the Mexicans doing all the work and cooking in the back! They are extremely careless with hygiene as well. I had to ask for the table I was seated on to be cleaned because they didn't wipe the table after the customer prior to me left.The bathrooms are also filthy, and disgusting! It's really a shame. The place has potential to do very well if management and staff gets proper "Customer Service Training" and they clean up the place. Goodness! how hard can that be? We have been eating at Cheng's for many years. We especially liked the Chinese music videos with many scenes of China as the background - now they have either sports or news without sound. This year the food quality has been compromised, perhaps in an attempt to keep costs down. I doubt that we will return as the last three times were so disappointing. read more

O.M.G. we walked in and was greeted. Server was nice. We went up to the BUFFET and it looked presentable. It was around 430. We went back to our seat...the hot food was cold...and the cold food such as desserts and all were room temperature and not chilled or cold at all. Disgusting... absolutely disgusting. Went there at the beginning of dinner hour thinking and hoping for fresh food. Rice was dried out completely, everything is deep fried and tasted of old grease and gym socks. One bite of something and my stomach started to churn. Paid 10 bucks for a meal that I picked at. After realizing that there was nothing grilled (even though there's advertised to be a grill there) rather everything is deep fried, and there was nothing my stomach could handle i decided to try eating some fruit. It was from a can or not even ripe yet, even the fruit was disgusting. As a last ditch effort to try and consume 10 dollars worth of a meal, i tried a salad, they only had ranch dressing, and maybe it's because of my experience, but the lettuce, while looking fresh, tasted plastic-y. I wont even begin to to tell what all that disgusting food did to by body when I got home. Ate it a day ago and I'm still in recovery. I love Chengs! The food is always fresh, the servers are super attentive and the choices are endless. Sure there's lots of fried goodies, but do not pass on the black pepper chicken!!! The pricing isn't bad, and it's pretty clean for the most part (considering it's a buffet).. I've been to Chengs probably 10-15 times and never have had any issues there. Its a buffet....but the shrimp are larger and of bigger variety then the big chain seafood restaurant. Very pleasant staff and eere kind to even the crazies who artived 10 min before closing with large family!! Worth the drive IF you like chinese buffets with colorful variety of dishes and sushi. The place is disgusting. Ordered a pot of tea, drank two glasses then looked in the pot to realize there was food inside the pot! Don't EVER eat here after normal dinner hours. They make you pay for a full buffet when they take half of the buffet away simply because it's close to closing time and they want to go home. I was there 2 hours before they were closing and I only got 1 plate of food. When I went back for a second plate, half the buffet was gone. The manager told me I could ask the kitchen to make what I wanted but they were cleaning and it didn't look sanitary. I have been in the food service business for many years and I feel they not only cheated me but other customers as well that walked in after me, full price. I demanded my bill to be cut in half. The manager offered me a coupon. I accepted it and told him he should not do this to people. He then got rude with me and said" My Rules". This made me angry and I told him " I shouldn't have to pay full price for half a buffet and I'm not paying full price and your rule SUCKS"!!! He grabbed the coupon out of my hand and I grabbed my money sitting in the black tray and told him I would NEVER be back. I walked out without paying him. This happened about a year ago. I never went back until my boyfriend wanted to go eat there. It was normal dinner time hours. This time there was a full buffet. This time was much better. Me and my fiance have went here multiple times before and it's always great! His favorite things are the noodles with a little soy sauce on them. Well, we went and the noodles looked dark like they were burnt. He got some on his plate and tried them and said they tasted weird and even asked the waitress if they were different than their usual. She didn't know. The noodles were the only thing he took a bite or two of and it made him sick to his stomach. We asked the server for a box so he can take the rest of the food on his plate home, she said no. Then, We asked for the manager and asked her to not charge for his meal because the food made him sick and he only ate a few bites.she only took $3 off the bill when his meal cost $10. We then told her that we would pay for his drink, but not his meal, and she gave us dirty looks and refused because he "ate" technically, when he only had two bites and it made him feel sick.
