I started going to the Golden Wok when working at Park National nearby decades ago. Consistent quality, great taste, attentive service, and reasonable prices. Additionally, the atmosphere is quiet and unhurried so a business meeting is possible. We ate there before a concert at Midland since we had a bad experience with 1922 before (long wait even with reservation). Food was good, service was good. Disappointed they had no alcohol at all even though there are pics of beer and wine and a nice bar area. We were told they haven't got their license renewed since covid era. read more

I ordered from here and ordered the incorrect thing(which was my fault). They delivered and I then realized it was wrong I called tried to explain asked if I could bring this back and get correct food and they said no I needed to reorder and pay for the other correct thing. Yes it was my fault but I offered to come back instead of them delivering due to it being my fault. I work in the food industry and always try to make everyone happy as a server this has happened to me and I always try to make customer happy even if it's there fault. I stopped in for a take out order. It was 1:00pm on a Monday. I waited at the cash register and walked around the area for at least 5 minutes before anybody came out of the kitchen to take my order. I found a menu laying around so that was helpful. That wait time was quite annoying. If I wanted to I could have taken the cash register and left. I would have had a good head start! The woman who took my order was not very kind. After saying that let me tell you, the food (President Shrimp) was very good! ( I didn't like the peanuts in it. I picked them out.)In my opinion the portion was large. I have enough left over for lunch tomorrow. I would give it more stars if the service was not so lacking. read more

We just finished another great carryout meal from the Golden Wok. We shared the sesame chicken, an order of potstickers and crab Rangoon. All of it was delicious, large in portion size and ready when I arrived. Their prices are nice as well. We really like this place, and plan to eat in there sometime soon. Resurrected from a former speakeasy, this spectacular small-town Chinese restaurant is literally a hole in the wall. Its red enameled archway doors are secreted between two brick buildings, and accessible only by shadowy alley-way. The Golden Wok is so secluded that some lifelong residents won't even recognize the name, let alone its sordid history of bawdy houses and bootleg gin. I've spent enough special occasions here to graduate from sipping Shirley Temples to Dragon Ladies, and the menu lives up to the memories I've made. For my father's 65th Birthday, I gathered friends and family for their signature dinner: A fearsomely titled, multiple course, 8-10 person feast: "The Genghis Khan Hot Pot Banquet"! When we arrived, the white linen tables were already set with silver vessels of soy and sweet & sour sauce, and bookended with two kettles of piping hot Chinese tea. There was some small distress about my little nephew's presence (technically he made our headcount 11, they are sticklers about their reservation requirements), but he had a chair and a booster seat in the time it took to pass the tea. First Course: Picture a platter of all your favorite appetizers with a pineapple in the center. This pineapple is not ironic, nevermind the toothpicked balls of fried shrimp piercing it's exterior, it is epic, and it sweetens the mood. Especially once the top is removed to reveal tender slices of the fresh fruit. Supporting roles in this dish include staples like egg rolls, fried won tons, deep-fried jumbo shrimp, bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, and believe it or not, barbecued spare ribs. Second Course: Everything was served family-style, so everyone shared the Sweet and Sour Shrimp platter. A light batter over perfectly prepared jumbo prawns, served with the tasty "chef's special sauce". Fried and white rice, as well as cocktails, were steadily refilled. Third Course: My Dad and I passed on the President's Chicken, a spicy stir-fry made with peanuts and Szechuan sauce (Not a fan of nuts), but it was a hit with the rest of the table. Fourth Course: The Emperor's Delight tastes as regal as it's name, with a glorious combination of king crab meat and marinated beef. This is the best kind of surf and turf, served in a sublime Imperial sauce with sauteed crimini mushrooms. Definitely the highlight of my meal. Fifth Course: There started to be talk of pacing ourselves after extra helpings at the last courses, and then they presented us with the Peking Duck. This was a scene-stealing, seconds-having, show-stopper. It takes 24 hours to prepare and requires a reservation, and it's the most succulent bird I've ever eaten. Served with a dark sauce, elegantly cut bamboo shoots, and tiny round crepes, it was pretty enough that I was even able to convince my picky sister to try a bite. (She loved it) Sixth Course: The Hot Pot, aka big electric wok full of make-your-own soup. After some awkwardness with our waitress and the plug (the outlet was positioned right below one of our guests), we fumbled around attempting to cook with our netted spoon implements. It didn't take long before we decided toss in all the ingredient options - very unceremonious but satisfying. Contents included marinated chicken, beef, shrimp, and scallops, sliced cha siu (barbecued pork), bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, Chinese cabbage, onions, lettuce, and spinach, in an egg swirl broth. Last Course: Dessert was the mysteriously titled "Mandarin Dream", which consisted of palate-teasing vanilla ice cream and tangerine slices, topped with orange liqueur and shredded coconut. The cool citrus and rich vanilla was a fantastic finale, but I could barely manage a few bites after that bacchanal. Almost everyone else cleaned their bowl! The price was a scandalously affordable $19.75 per person for this decadent dinner, not including the drinks. And you have to try at least one - with names like "Strawberry Butterfly", how can you resist? Don't worry, the walls may have ears, but they'll never tell. The location of this restaurant is really cool! It's in a back alley and has a very decorative door, you feel like you're in a bigger city! Unfortunately, the food is not very good. We were served store bought pot stickers. Service was sketchy. The place used to be awesome but has gone severely down hill. Please do yourself a favor and go to lucky bamboo. Yes, the entrance is right on the alley, but you'll see a big sign for it from the street. Don't worry, it's not really sketchy... just has its entrance... in an alley. Hm. This Chinese place in Newark is worth visiting a lot of times. The new owner June is a delightful person and has recently started new dishes. We tried the chicken noodle hot pot. It was just excellent. The chicken was very soft and melted in your mouth. The flavors were delectable. You have to try it. Their old favorites are fragrant shrimps and Ma La Gai Din. This restaurant was a family favorite for almost 30 years! One of the better Chinese restaurants we'd ever eaten at. Tonight was literally the worst. Nastiest Chinese food we've ever had! To travel the spectrum from best to worst between visits was devastating. They recently renovated and changed ownership. The food was all bad. Chicken was raw in the middle and had to be sent back. The fried items were clearly cooked in rancid oil. Bacon wrapped water chestnuts tasted like they were wrapped before the industrial revolution. What a bummer! We watched another couple cringe as they bit into their rancid egg rolls. They had been long time customers too. Unless you have a time machine to go back to golden wok under former ownership, don't do it. read more

We have eaten at Golden Wok many times over the past 25 years and always enjoyed both the food and unusual interior decor. Went back after a long absence and something has changed, but not for the better. Service was slow which isnt a deal breaker but food was disappointing. The best thing was the (probably frozen) egg rolls. My chicken Lo Mein was dull and unappetizing. Tempted to rate it a 1 but my wife seemed to enjoy whatever she ordered so it's a 2. Ordered some food here yesterday and they delivered it to my house fresh and it tasted amazing. I got the chicken wings and the sesame chicken and fried rice and everything tasted wonderful. My husband loves this place but I find it revolting and disgusting. the food was very bland, and tasted like it came out of a freezer bag, nothing tasted right in ever time we've been there. not to mention there is hardly any light for you to see what you're eating. The service during each lunch has been rude and felt like every time we entered we were taking away their lounging time or gossiping time. and the smell of the place. horrid! Our party of two adults and a teen tried three dishes. Portions were generous, egg fried rice was good. Sweet and sour chicken seemed fried in old oil, and there wasn't much difference between the sauces for Moo Goo Steak Kew and Chiu (something) pork. Service was pleasant but slow, they seemed short-handed for a Saturday night. I've heard good things about them for lunch, so maybe things are fresher and faster than for dinner. The waiter didn't bring the egg rolls and soup that were included with every lunch special. When I asked him about it he said that you have to request it. I just went here with my wife and 5 kids and to say we were disappointed is a HUGE understatement . My husband and I used to eat here 20 years ago and wanted to share our memories with our kids but the difference between the two experiences are like night and day. The sweet and sour sauce tasted like watered down ketchup and the "Chinese vegetables" we're nothing more than frozen peas and square carrots you would find in a TV dinner. There were no bamboo shoots, water chestnuts or any Asian vegetables, and nothing was fresh. I'm probably the worlds' worst cook ( my family will agree) but I've NEVER made anything that bad. The fried rice was just white rice with soy sauce mixed in- no onions, veggies or egg and was hard and under-cooked. We were given no drink refills and after the food was delivered, nobody came back to check on us until the check was handed to us. Some adjectives that come to mind are rancid, horrid, cold, and generally disgusting. We paid our bill and literally ran out of there and got the kids a pizza. DO NOT eat at this restaurant unless you have spare cash that you want to throw away and have a cast-iron stomach or you have a death wish. read more
