The Kung pao chicken is good (I added their home made chili sauce). The waitress was right that you need to like cooked zucchini because there is quite a bit. This place used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in Hermiston, it no longer is. The food quality has been diminishing for awhile now but after today I'll figure something else out in the future. The thing that pushed me over tonight was the utter lack of respect I received when I arrived, the young female that was working this evening 3/29 was on the phone addressing something with her phone provider. I attempted to try and speak with her but her priority was not me the customer. This place used to have solid fried rice, but now it is the blandest rice I've ever eaten, it literally has rice, egg and little bits of pork that cannot be seen. I understand that sometimes there are hits and misses with food but it's clear to me that a worker who could care less about customers and then eating the food that is lacking any quality / flavor. The food was 2.5 stars and their service was borderline 2 stars and I'm being very generous here. The chicken Lo Mein was definitely good. I couldn't get enough of their sweet and sour chicken. Overall decent Chinese food. The service: I don't appreciate it when people snap at me when I ask a reasonable question like, "Can you change out the chow mein for lo mein in your combo meal?" Combination meal, which came with: bbq pork, and egg roll, two chicken wings, crab rangoon, choice of soup and three main dishes ( general tso's, almond chicken and beef w/ broccoli) and fried rice. Only giving it a one star because I was not able to give a half of a star. We first walked in the resultant the lady just told us to go sit wherever on the left side of the restaurant and most of the tables had not been cleaned or had a plates on them. Took the waitress a while to get to our table, the place was not busy at all. The plastic cup of water that was given to our little girl had a piece of saltine cracker in it and was sent back. The food: was sub par and could be made at home if you bought store frozen chicken and knew how to whip up your own sweet and sour sauce and general tso sauce. Our little girl got the grilled cheese and fries and that was better than the chicken dishes we had. The rice was probably the only fresh thing we had. And I had to stop eating and get the check because of the hair that I found in my chicken. The parking sucks here and the interior could use some help. Prices were cheap as we paid $24 for two chicken dishes and a kids meal. Save money and go somewhere else or order off the kids menu. I started the meal with a bowl of hot & sour soup. Excellent, and it had just the right amount of heat for me. Service was quite pleasant. Instead of the usual beef with broccoli, I asked for chicken with broccoli - had no problem with the substitution. We weren't that hungry, so we ordered the Chen's special fried rice. OMG, the servings were so huge we had leftovers for lunch the next day. There were so many extra ingredients in the fried rice that we were looking for the rice - a good thing! The chicken and broccoli was nicely seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The chicken was tender, and the fresh broccoli cooked but still crunchy. We were served a crisp fortune cookie at the end of the meal. And BTW I asked for hot sauce, and they had the real sambal oelek stuff as a condiment. I'm always skeptical about the authenticity of Chinese restaurants outside major cities with Chinatowns, but this place is worth the visit. If I'm in the area I'll definitely go back. read more

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! It'd been a while since I went the last time and decided to try it again....WELL let me just warn you now that the second time pretty much lived up to the first visit it was... Absolutely horrid...There was only one other table filled in the restaurant, there was two waitresses, and our service was still very much lacking. When we arrived we explained to them that there would be six of us tonight and that two were running a little late, but that they were on their way. We get seated and then our waitress says "so what to you want". I'll admit I gave her a funny look and asked her what she meant and she rolled her eyes and said to drink, another person at our table asked what they had as he had never been there before and as we were just seated he hadn't had a chance to look at the menu she replied with coke products so we order our drinks and then she comes back and asks us if we are ready to order. I state that we are still waiting for the other two people in our party, but we'd like to order some appetizers, she once again rolls her eyes and says "I guess, what do you want" and if I was smart I would have just left then....but alas we stayed. So she comes back maybe five minutes later and says "You ready to order yet" I replied with "No, sorry we are still waiting on the other two". So once again she rolls her eyes and walks away. Our other two people in our party arrive and she asks what they want to drink they order their drinks and when she brings them back she takes our order. Our appetizers finally arrive after 20 minutes, while she's dropping the appetizers at the table she states that they are out off egg flower soup, we say "okay, do we get a discount then since all of our meals come with it?" She snickers and walks away, never really giving us an answer and then about 10 minutes later here comes the food.... We asked her if we could get some refills and she said sure...Food was fine, but when we she came to ask for boxes we said we needed three and she walked away. When we boxed up our meal she handed us our ticket and not all the prices were on the ticket, and so I questioned the math. I asked the waitress if she could explain it for me and she says "Well I didn't add it up, Amy did, want me to get her?" I said yes please as she was already walking away. Then Amy comes out I asked her if she could explain it to me and she got out her calculator and showed me where she didn't write the prices and so then all the math added up. I then asked her if we were getting charged for the soup that we never got because they were out of it and she explained that yes, we were because it was included in the meal price. I asked how she could charge us for a product that we never received and she said "didn't she tell you before you ordered that we were out" I stated that she hadn't she just said that you guys were out of egg flour soup, but never offered anything else. Then our waitress in the background starts talking about how that never happened and so I asked her what she thought that had happened and she said we never asked for soup... It comes with the meals and if we didn't order it then why would you tell us that's you were out.... Amy then says while I'll take off two dollars and I said for six bowls of soup that we NEVER got your going to take off two dollars, I don't really see how that's fair, when someone ordered a pick three and they charged us for three item and we only got the two and the price difference there was over two dollars. I at this point feeling cheated said that's freaking ridiculous, then she offers us half off our next visit and I said why would we come back after how we have been treated tonight? She said I take off two dollars and then and for our card and then charged us to use our card. I walked out then and left my husband to finish paying. I like Chens quite a bit for the most part. Always fresh, hot, big portions, and more flavorfull than any of the other chinese in hermiston. Best hot and sour soup and traditional favs are a step bove average. 1 star omitted for late eve. When i usually am grabbing to go, sometimes the sweet+sour pork and chicken are half fresh, and half either cooked way earlier and flash fried for heat(super dry), orbeen under heat lamps to the same effect. This is the cleanest Chinese in town. The fried rice is flavored well and not greasy. Sweet and sour chicken comes overflowing if you get it to go and is also cooked perfectly without excess grease. I've explored the menu and have nothing bad to say about any dish. This family does American Chinese well! Support local business and eat at Chen's! read more

Once a month or so we order 30-35 dollars worth of take out from here! They are excellent, fast, tasty, and always seems fresh. The spring rolls have a hint of nutmeg or all-spice I can't figure out which one. They aren't the friendliest waiting staff (even on a take out order), but the food is always spot on. Since I don't eat in I don't have a problem. If you want great food, decent prices, and want it in 15 mins this is definitely the way to go. Always keep a menu on hand for quick ordering over the phone :) P.S. They also passed their inspection with flying colors I couldn't help but notice in the news paper that always puts my mind at ease too LOL. read more

Don't quite know how the food is, as they refused to deliver. As a commercial driver, I'm used to this as occasionally hotels are outside of delivery areas. Chen's refused to deliver because 'we only deliver big order'. I don't know what a typical order is for Chen's, but I tend to think of 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, and a couple 2 liters of soda as a large order. You would think a vegetarian could get something good at a Chinese restaurant, but not necessarily. I ordered some noodles with veggies from the "Vegetable" menu and got a huge, heaping plate of oily noodles with a little bit of broccoli, celery, carrot, and small bits of water chestnuts. I couldn't eat it all but what really is irritating--there is never any contrast for vegetarians on the menu. A meat eater can order a combo meal and get some sweet and sour, hot mustard, deep fried something, etc. But for a vegetarian, you get one entree. Boring and unsatisfying. And to top it off, my meal was more expensive than my friend's meat combo. read more

Worst Chinese I've ever had... Waitstaff really didn't pay attention to my family and I. She brought us waters not to mention one of our glasses had food on it. We told her and it took her 10 min to bring us a different water. When she finally brought us a new water she took our order and food came to us fairly quickly but wasn't good at all. Kind of cold and tasted like it had been frozen. My daughters grilled cheese the cheese wasn't all the way melted. How can you screw up a grilled cheese?!? Really? My boyfriend got the general taso it looked and smelt good but tasted horrible. After a few bites in he found a hair in his food.. Gross!!! Waitress rarely checked on us if she did she was walking on by but didn't really stop at our table. When she brought us our check it was a decent price but we didn't leave a tip due to the fact this place had horrible service, horrible food, and kind of dirty.
