Casa Azul is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Shelby and honestly my favorite Mexican restaurant period. The decor and atmosphere are amazing and so are the service and the food. My husband and I go here on lunch or dinner dates almost weekly. They bring chips and salsa when they seat you and I always order a small side of queso. This visit I had the traditional taco salad with chicken and my husband had the fajitas poblanos that came with a side plate of rice, pico de gallo, beans and sour cream. Everything was delicious. We like to try something new each time and everything we have had has been phenomenal. Everything is always fresh and the portions are huge. We always have leftovers to take home. We were greeted and seated quickly and within moments had a basket of fresh chips and sauce. The food was presented attractively and was very tasty. We went in @ 8:45 and didn't realize closing time was 9:00 but rather then be greeted with hey welcome to casa Azul, we we're automatically told the grill closes @ 8:50!! We totally understand that and willing to leave but that's the perfect way to have lost a customer which you did !! We could have eaten a quick taco and left !! We enjoyed our meal at Cafe Azul. This is a new restaurant in Shelby (staff said they had been open about 5 months.) I ordered the Pescado C-AZ minus the shrimp due to shellfish allergy. It was well prepared, artfully presented with an edible flower and was delicious. I would order it again. My husband had a chicken, steak dish presented in a 1/2 a pineapple shell with a side of tortillas and it also came with rice and beans - probably would have been better to share as he could barely finish it. We also ordered the guacamole which is made fresh when you order. Timing was a little off on this as we received the guacamole without chips but they remedied it quickly when we asked. The decor is Frida, Frida, Frida as it states her home was the inspiration for Casa Azul. Music seemed loud and odd for the decor and restaurant's theme, but others may enjoy. Seems like they are going for a date night vibe. We were there on a Thursday night so we didn't wait long for table or service. Wait staff and manager we encountered seemed engaged and friendly. Check in. Got a beeper. They called us within the time. Then sent us back out, because they selected the wrong beeper. Waited. Then called us. Chips: basket is small. Chips are cold and stale-like. My guess, not made onsite. Second basket was warm. The servers are friendly and busy. The busyness affects the service. The salt, which the chips desperately need, doesn't come out of the shaker. Eventually the shaker worked. Ambiance: well it's extra. Food: Above average. Flavorful. The food was not hot enough for me. We will come back. I waited to visit since this restaurant is new and didn't want to deal with the heavy traffic that comes with a new opening. Now that they've been open for a little bit we made sure to stop by. The atmosphere is different than your standard Mexican joint which a liked. The inside uses bright colors and updated fixtures with a party vibe. The service is great and the menu has a large variety of food for everyone. I enjoyed the selection of drinks and the dessert menu was nice as well. The restaurant is super cute, very esthetic The food was good, I got the braised pork burrito (lunch) and chips and salsa. The salsa was decent, nothing over the top. Burrito was really good, loved all these flavors. The service on the other hand....was pretty bad. I walked in (3 tables had guests) and waited about 5 minutes for a host to come, a man walked in behind me and when the host came over she looked right past me and addressed the man behind me then went to find him a table. It was awkward...insult to injury was when she got back and realized I also needed a table- and was rude... There was a shuffle over whose section and what table I was to sit at, so we made a lap around the restaurant and I was sat at a large 4 top table vs. the 2 top she originally was going to sit me at (I was a party of 1). My server was pretty absent from then on. She had 1 other table... I think that sometimes it's super easy to get caught up in the hustle or maybe be wiped after a lunch push (I was there at 2pm on a Friday), and become complacent about maintaining as feel good atmosphere. My hope in sharing the staffing feedback is that management will encourage their team to think about the atmosphere they're creating for guests. A lot of thought and care went into the restaurant, you can tell. So don't let it all go to waste on complacency and bad vibes. read more

I went here for lunch today, my second time. My first visit was good and I would have rated it with 5 stars (I usually visit a few times before posting reviews - for reasons like I'm about to detail). Today, the service was extremely slow (no big deal, but it did take 15 minutes to place our order and 30 minutes to get the food). My biggest gripe was my ordering a quesadilla, that had no description other that just 'quesadilla' and I requested a spinach quesadilla. The bill was larger than I expected, so I looked to see if there were any mistakes. I was charged $2.00 extra for a "spinach upgrade". This was not in addition to meat, this was a meatless (vegetarian) option I was going for. If I had a beef or chicken quesadilla, my pick 2 meal would have been $10, but because I wanted spinach, it's $12? Everywhere else, quesadillas always have the option for beef, chicken, cheese, mushroom, spinach, I assumed these were all available options, since the quesadilla was labeled just as 'quesadilla'. Ok, I paid the bill, but I won't be coming back. It's not because the food is bad, but being charged $2 for an option that's standard everywhere and is a cheaper ingredient that actually made them more profit in the first place. I don't like business practices like this. Several restaurants have lost me for good for nickel-and-dime scams just like this one. It sucks, because I think the food is above average. I'm not a cheapskate, I will pay for good food, but taking advantage of my vegetarian choices ticks me off. The waiter never mentioned any extra charge for spinach instead of meat. Today, I would rate them 4 for food, but 0 for charging for something that shouldn't have been a charge at all. I hope the manager sees this and makes some changes. I wouldn't mind coming back if changes are made. Casa Azul, two extra bucks in your pocket got you a 2 star review. And I'm being generous with my rating because the waiter didn't fill drinks or chips/salsa and service was super slow (although a different waiter or food runner did help us). If the food and experience were a little better today (and no extra charges), you might have gotten a 5 star review. read more

Shelby has a variety of Mexican restaurants and because we are fond of Mexican food we thought we would give it a try. The staff were great! The bench booth seating was old and rickety but the bathroom was very clean. We observed very creative mixed drinks being delivered to other tables in the restaurant but we did not sample any. Unfortunately, we were not impressed with the food. My husband ordered the chicken ACP which came with chicken, rice and cheese but no onions, peppers, etc. I had the braised pork burrito and the pork texture and flavor was really good but it did not come with a side.
