It was raining outside and traffic was bad so i was looking for the 1st Chinese restaurant i could find. So Chen's Garden was the top pick. I called in my order for some egg rolls and sweet n sour chicken. It cost $20 which was kinda high to me. But ok... The egg rolls didn't have much meat at all. Just wonton and cabbage. Bummer.. The shrimp in my fried rice still looked raw. I was just turned off because it was also flavorless and i couldn't finish it. I wasn't a fan of the sweet and sour chicken either. It was sincerely mainly breading with tiny pieces of chicken. The lady at the counter was nice though. I paid and was on my way.. I don't think I'll return. I ordered vegetable chow mein and house special chow mein, along with a few other items. Their menu says chow mein comes with "white rice and fried noodle." Upon returning home, we found out our order didn't have any noodles. Just two trays full of fried lettuce, onion, carrots, and other veggies. My wife called to see if she could come back to pick up the fried noodles. We assumed they just forgot to put them in the bag. The woman said their chow mein doesn't have any noodles at all, and it wasn't supposed to come with noodles! She blamed us and said we were confusing it with lo mein! Are you serious lady? I thought maybe I was going crazy due to her gaslighting us, so I even took the time to google what chow mein is. Turns out I was right. ITS EVEN STATED ON YOUR MENU! So you're telling me that chow mein (which is basically stir fried noodles with meat and/or veggies) is not made with noodles? What we received were two soggy trays of vegetables overflowing with oil (about $20 worth of food). See attached pictures. 1 star for saying chow mein isn't supposed to have noodles (contrary to your menu) and blatantly lying to my wife on the phone/ victim blaming. I'm seriously considering going to my bank for a charge back to my credit card because this is false advertising/ borderline fraudulent. read more

My go to for Chinese delivery. Prices are by far cheaper and better tasting too! I'm so glad they deliver to my house. Since they have their own drivers THAT DONT WORK FOR GRUBHUB all deliveries come less than 40mins. Lo-mein is well seasoned, general chicken comes crispy and not soggy like the other spots. This Chinese restaurant is fairly close (5-10 minutes) from where I work & live. It's a fairly small place, but the food here is delicious. The employees at this establishment have always been pleasant to me, regardless of how busy they get. The food is always done in a reasonable amount of time (10-15 minutes), which if you call ahead, it would probably be done by the time you get there. Chen is a good man. For years he was a Triad not to be messed with, now he makes great Chinese take out. He can still destroy you, only now it's with the flavor of his delicious house pansit! I'm a great lover of the house fried rice here also. It matches up with any great place I've ever been. As you can tell from my profile picture I'm 3rd generation Chinese and I know good, authentic rice when I taste it. Another thing I like/hate about this place is no matter what you order whether it be 1 egg roll or dinner for 50 people, it always takes "Fifteen minute." This is my go to Chinese delivery spot. The have good portion size and affordable pricing. The best part about Chen's is how Fast they deliver! I ordered bourbon chicken and fried chicken wings (which were perfectly flavored, brown and crispy) and the items were delivered within 25 mins. Now grant it the delivery driver got a little lost in my neighborhood (happens all the time dang GPS) but they are petty swift with delivery anytime of day even on the weekends. I've been 3 minutes away from Chen's location for 20 years now. There have been different owners over the years and the quality and value of the food has been up and down. I remember going to pick up an order and seeing the cooks in the back cutting up chicken and prepping the food. Not the most appetizing picture, but at least I could tell they were working with fresh meat and vegetables. The newest incarnation leaves a lot to be desired. The food portions are significantly smaller than they used to be and the food is clearly not fresh...just re-heated frozen stuff. The "pork fried rice" had two tiny cubes of pork and the dinner portion of the chicken was smaller than the lunch portion used to be. It is cool that they finally got a website that you can order through, but it doesn't state that they won't take credit cards at the restaurant unless the order is over $10. I selected the pay at the restaurant option and the girl at the counter told me I had to use cash after I got there. I've always paid here with CC, but, again...new owners. read more

I literally just finished inhaling dinner from here. I ordered the spring rolls, crab Rangoon, chicken wings, veggie lo mein, and shrimp fried rice for delivery. (I was hungry.) It was promised in 30 mins, and I believe it was here a few minutes before promised. The spring rolls are not made fresh; you can tell that they are frozen. The crab rangoon was a little on the sweet side. I thought the shrimp was slightly over cooked. For the positives, the veggie lo mein, fried chicken, and rice were pretty good! Everything arrived piping hot. I liked the accuracy of order, and the delivery option. This will definitely be my go-to delivery spot when I order Chinese-American. read more

Not good today. At all. Loved this place, always friendly cashier and great food, but I think ownership has changed yet again and the new folks dont know what flavor is. Seriously. The steamed dumplings are horrible tasting. And rubbery. Yuck. Had to throw the rest out. The lunch shrimp and broccoli had 5 small shrimp in it not much more broccoli than that. Disappointed to say the least. And their lunch combos dont come with an egg roll anymore? I just paid $15+$3 tip and I ate about $4 worth. Bummer. read more

Been going here for 8 years, so 8yrs and only 2 stars? Chen's used to be the best take out in Va Beach, but in the last year it's gone down hill fast. Shrimp toast still on the menu, but it's now pre- packaged and greasy. It appears the pork now used is also pre- packaged and processed. The fried rice is just not the same (just heated in the wok), the lo mein passable at best (again, product change), and the portions continue to shrink in meat quantities. I really do hope the owners check Yelp and will improve their restaurant. The lady who helped us was very nice and I think they are trying. Anyway, overall the setup could use some help. There are lots of boxes and other items piled up in/near the eating area, which just make it feel like you are eating in a warehouse and not a restaurant. Next, they also could work harder to keep the eating area clean. It was totally dirty, but some shine would help. However, there was the trash can located right next to one of the tables--people just don't want to eat sitting next to a trash can. Also, the trash can needs to be completely cleaned of all food spills and stuff at least daily--there was lots of old spills, etc. The eating area should also be better organized. Table and chairs were cramped together in a disorganized fashion. Also, I need to mention the bathroom. This was totally unsatisfactory! It smelled VERY strongly of urine, looked terrible overall (but the bowl and seat looked clean), and did not have any way to dry your hands. There's no excuse to have a restaurant bathroom in this shape. As for the food, it was pretty typical Chinese fare for this kind of restaurant (which I assume does most of its business as take away or delivery). I'm always a bit surprised that so many Chinese restaurants are willing to Americanize their food so much. Yes, they need to offer the General Tso's to appease the masses, but stuff like Garlic Chicken should have some more authentic flair. And fried dumplings need to be handmade! There's just no excuse for anything less. As it stands, I might return for take out in a pinch, but I wouldn't dine in again. Most of time, I think that there is a cultural barrier for a lot of immigrants who don't understand what their new culture expects in terms of dining experience. This is the closest Chinese place near my house and I find myself ordering from here almost every weekend. I have only ordered from their lunch menu and there's a good amount of options for their lunch specials which are about 5 or 6 dollars. The lunch specials includes an an entree, rice, and an egg roll or a drink. My go to is the pork lo mein,and it's pretty good. I've def had better, but I've most definitely had worse. I just keep coming back because it's soooooo cheap. Another plus is that they're really fast with delivery! Nothing like being hungover and wanting Chinese food, and the delivery takes an hour.... no bueno! read more

Thought we would give this place a try since it's right by our house and we could conveniently order online. Sadly, the food was just not good. The meat (chicken for the kids, pork for me and beef for my husband) did not even taste like meat, and the rice was crunchy and had an almost chemically flavor to it. Placed an order for 2 Lo Meins and 2 General Tsao's Chicken to be placed in separate bags with 1 of each item. We picked up the food and my Mom brought hers home and we did the same. Unfortunately we did not check the bags before leaving, because my Mom was missing the Lo Mein. After verifying that she had ordered correctly in the receipt, my Mom called Chen's back. They told her to call me to make sure they didn't place it in my bag--Nope not in my bag. So I called to let them know this and they asked me to call her back to make have her doublecheck the bag again because she put them in there herself & said it wasn't busy implying that THEY could not have made the mistake. My Mom checked again and what was given was 1 Gen Tsaos and 2 boxes of rice which usually only 1 rice box is given per entree so this is where the problem appears to be. I call them back with this information and she continues to tell me she doesn't understand how that is possible. She asks me to get the 2 rice boxes from my Mom's house then drive back to their restaurant to pick up the Lo Mein so I could then drive back to drop off the Lo Mein at my Mom's. Instead of the 45 min back and forth trip, I tell them we will get our food elsewhere if this is how they handle an issue like this. I have ordered from this place many times before and never had an issue so although it may have been a mistake, my problem was them not owning up to the fact that the mistake could have been was theirs especially noticing that there were 2 rice boxes instead of 1 in that bag. This is the best Chinese food place in Hampton Roads. Being from NY, it was hard to find a Chinese place that could make our favorites as well as what we've been used to. We haven't tried EVERYthing, but we can vouch for the most commonly ordered items. The only downside is that you never know who will be manning the phones, whether it is someone who speaks English or not (which is fine with me as long as I get the right order which has thankfully always happened). There is always children there taking up the tables. They are really cute, but don't expect to have a place to sit. The kids are great at helping with orders and taking payments as long as you have some patience. Overall, it gets 5 stars because it is the best Chinese food you will have in this area! read more
