The sign said they closed at 9 P.M., and my husband and I arrived at 8:04 P.M. They quickly brought drinks and asked if we wanted more rice or noodles on the buffet. We said we were fine with the amount there but by 8:15 P.M. they were packing up the buffet and vacuuming right by our table. I understand doing closing tasks but I have never felt so rushed at a restaurant. We were out by 8:30 P.M. because they started taking away all the food, which seems wasteful if there are people there willing to eat it and they are just throwing it out.. Rolling into town hungry and wanting quick service I pulled into Chen's after learning my first two choices were closed on Mondays. Chen's would be better described as a hybrid Chinese--American buffet since 1/3-and approaching 1/2 --of its offerings are Southern influenced comfort foods including fried chicken, cornbread catfish, and creamy cole slaw. Even the Mongolian steak looked remarkably like Sunday afternoon roast beef. The fried items looked and tasted like they'd sat a while under the heat lamps. However, they seemed to turn quickly--especially the fried chicken--and were replaced by more dried out food. The usual Chinese meat and vegetable dishes--beef with broccoli, Mongolian chicken, and others--fared a bit better but only because they sat in sauces or their cooking juices. Oddly, spicy hot dishes like General Tso's weren't marked as such, which must have been an unpleasant surprise for any one sensitive to peppers. Sushi rolls were on display but lacked the care and artistry of an experienced sushi chef and appeared hurriedly put together by a disinterested staffer. So, as is often typical of a hybrid, Chen's compromised quality in order to please a wider audience. It seemed to work as Monday evening the small place saw family after family arrive. read more

So I went through Chen's Garden drive thru for the first time today and I can say I was not happy in the slightest. To start off I ordered the General Tso's Chicken (the same chicken I always get from Chinese establishments). I got home and I ended up having a BONE in my 2nd piece of chicken!!! Then I went back, after calling asking for a refund, and the lady who came to the window tried telling me that there are no bones in the chicken after I choked and threw up the piece that had it in it. And they took the food back in the store and whenever I asked what they were going to do with the food she ignored me. So just be careful, Chen's might be out to get YOU next. read more

Great variety on the buffet. The hot and sour soup is superb - lots of pork (most places you have to be lucky to get some) along with all the usual ingredients. Fried rice had noticeable egg, carrot, and peas and tasted good. Too many tasty bites to name them all! Glad I decided to come here for dinner instead of the other Chinese place in town. read more

The key reason I'm giving this two stars is that I had two family members had take out from here not that long ago and noticed their food smelled awfully strange. It turned out that the food they ordered had been spoiled and appeared to have been refrigerated before it came to them which caused them to be sick. read more

Driving through West Plains on Sunday around noon and realized Fish Shack and Bootleggers BBQ are closer on Sunday. So, we tried Chen's Buffet. It was really busy but no problem getting in or through the line. Buffet isn't huge, but has everything you would expect and want. Service was very good. They had all the classics and everything we had was fresh and tasty. Reminder me of a great Chinese buffet in Sikeston, MO that I love after duck hunting. When we paid I was very surprised because the price was so low, to me it was worth the 50%-75% more than the price. read more

Not a wonderful choice, but okay for West Plains. On the plus side, they had some nice coleslaw, potatoes, fried chicken slices and a lot of slices of quite good watermelon. The red jello was tasty. They also had three varieties of hard ice cream. Negatively speaking - there was no tongs for the watermelon, so folks would be tempted to use the ones for the cold shrimps right in front of it - kind of anathema for a devout vegetarian. No chopsticks were visible anywhere. The cucumber-tomato salad was way to sweet. And there were few vegetarian protein options. And the white rice was a bit on the dry side. I might eat here again given the lack of good choices in West Plains. read more

It is buffet. Limited selection. No Mongolian BBQ but good enough. Dessert & sushi best. Fresh enough for 3 pm.

The food is ok but the owner is RUDE and I found a whole roach in my take out half way through eating it!!!! When I called to tell them, they were extremely rude and did not want to reimburse me until I mentioned the Health Department. When I mentioned that they changed their attitude. A decent buffet, except there are almost zero vegetables in it. A few hunks of broccoli in one dish and a few hunks of green pepper in another, and that's about it. If you want any vegetables with your piles of beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, fish and egg foo yung, you'll have to get coleslaw or lettuce from the salad bar. Also, they have a sign on the door that says they don't use MSG but some other (nameless) "flavor enhancer". That right there makes me suspicious that whatever it is might be even worse for health than MSG. read more

We love the buffet, has the best food and they work hard to keep it filled up and looking good

I was a bit hesitant on coming here in the evening since most Chinese buffets are slack-a-lackin' around this time, but I'm oh-so glad that I did go! I can tell that they food is more directed towards people with a sea food taste, and although I'm not a huge fan, there were still plenty of other things for me to eat. As for my family, they got to eat all kinds of shrimp! Huge boiled ones with a side of cocktail sauce, smaller ones wrapped in a bacon strip, and coconut shrimp, which my boyfriend absolutely loved. Even I got to try a bite of it, and I must say, it was pretty dang good! And that's saying something if I like it. The waitress was nice (she commented that we 'smelt nice' when we walked in and was so bored that she kept our drinks full the whole time), and the bathrooms are clean. As far as the buffet goes, I kept noticing the cook come out every 10-15 minutes or so. Mind you, we had arrived around 6 PM. He kept doing table checks (looked like he was creepin' at first) to see how busy they were, and considering there were plenty of tables filled, he stocked up on the buffet, no problem. Which makes plenty of sense. If it's not really busy, after all, they would only be losing money by having to pitch it out later. Food = money. It's just how most business run. I'd say that if you walk in and it doesn't look busy-ish, then turn around. But if it's a full house (or hell, even half full), then by all means stay! The food is nice, the place is nice, it's just nice! Plus they have an awesome fish tank and weird looking fishes in there that are fun to gawk at. For the three of us to eat at such a fine buffet and have three sweet teas, it was only $27, which isn't bad considering the quality. read more
