I can't recall the last time I had such an unpleasant experience with a company! My experience with Cherished Possessions echoes many of the 1-star ratings previously given this company: * First item reportedly sold over three months ago with the last item reportedly sold over a month ago. I've not received ANY reimbursement despite my repeated requests for payment. CP's response: The check is in the mail. * Cherished Possessions emailed asking for my mailing address. As I had provided this information previously, I contacted a friend to pick up my check as I no longer live in Portland. Five days later I informed Cherished Possessions of my arrangements to obtain the payment due me; they emailed me back stating as they did not hear from me they mailed it to my Oregon address but did not confirm which address the check was supposedly mailed. The Kicker: I took five days for me to get back to Cherished Possessions, but it takes them weeks to respond to my requests, if they respond at all. * CP took weeks to re-establish my CP account after I informed them I no longer had access, preventing me from tracking sales on my furniture. CP's response: Their staff has been out sick. * When my account access was finally re-established, it did not show which of my items were sold or for how much; rather the account stated 'Total Paid to Date: $325.00'. The Kicker: I've not received ANY payment from Cherished Possessions. * I made arrangements for an item, reportedly not sold, to be picked up after the 90-day period stated in CP's contract. When contacted to make pickup arrangements, CP stated the item had been sold. When asked about the conflicting information provided by CP, the CP staff member became rude saying she didn't have time to discuss the furniture. With the loss of my property without the promised reimbursement, I now realize my mistake was not adhering to the numerous 1-star reviews given this business. Potential consignors & buyers should also read Cherished Possessions' responses to prior 1-star reviews which I found to be condescending & dismissive to concerns expressed by consignors. read more

Called and asked for an estate clean out style auction as my husband is retiring and we want to move on to the next chapter in our lives. The man on the phone acted as if my business wasn't valued to them. It felt like he was just trying to get me off of the phone ASAP! I've never felt so devalued by a company in my life! He told me a lady who does the appraisals would call me back, took my phone number and hung up! It is now well over 2 years later and I still never got the call back!!! I'm certainly not calling them back to engage with them as their lack of caring for their potential customers clearly testifies to how I would be treated as a real customer! I have had a horrible experience with this place. they picked up my things and put a hole in my wall, a scratch on my door, damaged two door frames. it's been 5 months and I was only sent one check for a measly amount. I have been back three times to ask about where my things are? they aren't on the floor. I was told a few things sold right away but I haven't been paid for them. I was told they would get a check out to me. it's been another two to three weeks and no check.,I will go to the district attorney and see if I can start a lawsuit against them. they are slipshod at best and dishonest at worst. shouldn't be allowed to be in business. The woman said she did not own the business, would not give me a phone number for the owner, always had an excuse for why my check was not ready. They basically stole my stuff. Well....... I had high hopes! I looked at the website before heading over, and was excited... I liked the descriptions of the inventory, thought it was great that it listed when the item came to the shop, etc. I decided to go 20 minutes out of my way - each way - before heading back to the Maine Turnpike to take a look for a side table and then anything else. However, here is the reason for the 2-star rating: I was the only customer in the shop, and 2 employees were there. Neither of the ladies acknowledged me whatsoever, even when one of them walked by me so closely she could have reached out and touched me! Really? How about a hello? I saw a table I liked, but forgot my measuring tape, and when I thought about asking if they had one, I then decided I could spend my $100+ elsewhere. read more

I would not recommend consigning anything with this business. They are very disorganized and sold my piece without even agreeing on a general price. I agreed to nothing and when I tried to reach out to them they simply didn't answer. We had no written agreement at all or verbal for that matter. I found their business practices very shady. Do not leave your piece with them while they evaluate it. They never got back to me at all. After several months I showed up to pick up my piece and it was gone.They ended up cutting me a check for barely nothing. I read negative reviews here and on the Better Business Bureau's site, but I nonetheless consigned my dining set. WHAT A MISTAKE. Cherished Possessions is only marginally attentive during the dropoff process, but once they have your item, it is all on you to track down its status and your payment if your item sold. But the worst is how they treat their consignors--including hanging up on you. They never informed me that my dining set had sold in November 2019 (about two weeks before the 90-day consignment period was to expire). I happened to see it marked as sold on their web site. I re-read the consignment contract to check on how payment is issued: The onus is on the customer to track down payments, which if you don't do in their specified manner, they will begin to deduct money from as time passes. You also have to request your payment on the 10th of the month after your item sold. Their "policies" do not allow for "item sells, check gets sent." So, I stopped by their store after the 10th of the month as they state, and the woman who barely looked up the whole time she was talking to me told me she didn't know where the check was, that their "accountant" hadn't written the latest checks yet but she wrote down my name and number and would let me know. I looked around and did see my dining set shoved over to the side of the store. When I hadn't heard or received anything over a week later, I emailed the other owner, who had at least been somewhat responsive during the dropoff period, but got no response from him either. Five days later, I called the store, and the person who answered said he wasn't able to relay any detailed messages. I told him this was my third attempt to get information about my sold dining set and would he please at least take my name and number and ask the owner to call. The woman called me the next day, told me there was a web site mistake and that my dining set hadn't sold. When I tried to ask questions about it, she just kept repeating there was a web site mistake and became extremely unpleasant, as Lousie G's review says. And then--SHE HUNG UP ON ME. If you are determined to turn your items into cash, know that you will have to work hard at it with this business, if you can stand dealing with them at all. Also know that you may end up like me--without payment or your item. Life is simply too short to spend time with such toxic people. The truly most regrettable thing about this situation to me now, though, is that there are a number of local charities who are actively seeking items like my dining set to put to use in the homes of people who are so deserving of a donation, which the owners of Cherished Possessions are not. read more

I firmly believe that that quality and professionalism of a company is reflected by their attention to details -- even when it comes to the spelling and grammar in their marketing. So when I read that a consignor can "prick up a check over $10.000, ...." , it is a red flag -- especially with this company, in light of these less than stellar reviews! read more

EDIT: after their review on google I would like to clarify: 1) I was the one who called the police and reported embezzlement. Because that's exactly what they were doing. 2) Go to Yelp and check the reviews there. Not sure why the reviews here have a higher approval # but literally they have 2 stars on yelp when I checked. 3) There was NEVER anything about a broken pipe etc. That's the first time I have ever heard of it. The excuse they gave me was that they were "switiching accounting systems" or there was some lie about a business partner taking their money.... Again, call Portland PD if you want, they took a report. (I'll stress again, the Portland PD who I called). 4) My incident with them occurred over 3 years ago not a year ago? So they don't even have the right person to lie about! All I did was copy and paste my yelp review in here which was from 3 years ago. It was posted on google about a year ago. 5) The "clients" who I was getting the money for were my parents, so I had their express permission to get the check(s). NOT my aunt and uncle? Where the heck did that come from? And if I didn't have their permission, why did you cut checks to me? Trust me, it wasn't because you called "the clients" for permission. You never once returned a message to them. The takeaway here is: they are confusing my horrible experience with them with someone else who had ALSO had the same experience. (the broken pipe story, aunt and uncle, the timing of my incident, they are writing it under my review, but this was not my situation). This could be considered libel. 6) Also, why did the Portland Press Hearld reach out to me to gather information regarding the ongoing theft(s) that are occurring at your store? read more

UPDATE: I wish I could give zero stars. I gave my items to Cherished Possessions in May 2016. I was paid for one sold item in July 2016. I was owed an additional $177.xx in August 2016 (*I stand corrected on my initial post of being owed over $200...however, also hard to confirm since CP has disabled my online account so I cannot truly confirm if I'm really owed $177.xx or if they made it up when I was given that number in November 2017, but hey, I'll go with it, I'd like to be paid SOMETHING). I have contacted CP on at least nine occasions that I have documented in the past year and half to try to get the final $177.xx owed. In April 2017 I was told by a woman who works at the store (who refuses to tell me her name and hung up on me this morning when I asked) that I would be sent a check right away. No check. In July 2017 same story. No check. Multiple calls not returned in the interim. Late November 2017 I get the same woman on the phone on a Saturday afternoon who did confirm that I am owed $177.xx and that I would receive the check mid-December 2017. Great - maybe this epic saga would be over. Mid-December came and went, no check. January 4, 2018 I call and leave a message asking about the check that didn't arrive. January 6th I missed a call from same woman at CP, something about she can't check on my check because she is not at the location where the accounting books are so she doesn't know what could have happened but since they are closed M and T she would call me on Wednesday January 10, 2018 to tell me where my check is. No call on January 10th. I call the week of January 22, 2018 and the phone is disconnected. I file a report with the BBB. I called this morning, January 31, to ask about my check...that is now 1.5 years overdue. They screen their calls, but this same woman picks up the phone, she knows my name by now and is upset I seem to think CP is lying to me. I explain it is hard to think I'm not being lied to when I don't have a check I have been told I will receive multiple times. She told me they have had a massive accounting error and lost a ton of accounts' information and that their pipes recently froze blah blah blah. My patience and care have now expired, yet I remain calm and cordial. She says she cannot confirm the amount of my check, I say no problem we already did that together in November and the check she said I would receive mid-December was for $177 and some change. She repeats she cannot confirm that and then stated something like, "we have been closed due to these issues and we only make money when we sell things. If we can't sell things then we can't pay our more than 5,000 consignors..." but then went on to say that I will get a check that "will be sent out on Monday" as in on Monday, February 5, 2018. I think to myself, she has kind of said they might not have money right now to pay anyone (even though they sold my items in summer 2016 and I should have been paid then) but also said that my check will be sent out next week...? Will the LIES continue or will I receive my check next week or soon after? It is very hard to believe anything this business tells you, case in point above. I want to be sympathetic to their issues but then again, let's get real here. On another note, business isn't personal - I signed a contract with them and this is simply a business transaction, I can hardly be expected to extend sympathy at this point for their personal issues. I have been going to this store since they moved to this location and have found the selection quite amazing. I have purchased several items and have sold many, many, more. The friendly staff is always eager to help with a purchase and very informative of the items that you want to sell. When my items are sold I have never had to wait for my payment. So on 04/03/17 my wife brought some items in. The items sold pretty quick and this is where in the problems are that I have with this place. My wife spoke with the person about getting the small amount of money owed to us. She spoke to them 05/03/17 and they said the "Check is in the mail". She waited and called 07/07/17. Jason said "Oh, we sent it. We will check with the bank to see if it was cashed". She called several more times since then. We also went down there and was told "We can't cut you a check, We need to send it out". Then I called on 10/07/17 Got the same rhetoric. It is now 10/12/17 with no phone calls. My advice to people out there thinking of working with these folks? NO NO NO....stay away. Apparently they like to sell your stuff and keep your money as well. read more

I absolutely adore this store. Whenever we need something, whether it may be a media cabinet, lamp or end table, I first take a look online to see if Cherished Possessions might have something that will fit into our decor. Lately, every time I look, I find just the right item to fit our needs. BUT I also keep browsing, and then find something that I didn't know I needed!! Got a very neat piano chair with a back for our Grands to use as they practice playing the piano. It is so easy for us during this crazy time to find just the perfect piece. They describe it online so you can measure your own space to see if it will be the perfect piece. I highly recommend Cherished Possessions and have been frequenting their store (current location in Portland and prior in So Po) for many years. read more

Terrible customer service. They were very friendly and optimistic when I placed a number of items on consignment. Since then they take weeks to respond to emails regarding the status of the items. Hang up on all telephone calls placed and have yet to mail me checks for the items that have been sold. Additionally, they never posted pictures of any of the items consigned with them despite the fact they were very excited to receive them because of their quality and condition. I just thought they were terrible business people as they lost track of what I dropped off (I had to keep my own inventory to prove what was mine), lied about status of checks,never paid me in full, etc, etc, etc. While I still think they are terrible business people, I now believe they are flat out crooks, as it appears this is how they treat all consignors. We should have seen the red flags as soon as we met with Cas, who runs the estates side of this business. We had to call her when she was late to our first meeting. She excused it by explaining a bit too much about her son-in-law's medical condition that caused her to be late. Once we met, she convinced us of the merits of consigning the furniture and other items we wanted removed from my parents' estate. In hindsight, I expect that she pushed us away from doing an estate sale because of the higher commission and leverage. We signed a contract and paid them $600 to dispose of some items that they were not interested in consigning. We carefully organized everything into clearly defined groups with sticky notes designating the items that they should take. There were other groups of items that we were keeping or giving to other family members to remember my parents. These were marked with a different colored sticky note and a name. When the pickup-day came, Cas cancelled at the last minute and rescheduled for a time when we were not able to meet her. Since my siblings and I live out of state and were rushing to get the house on the market, we (stupidly) let Cas and her team come into the house on their own. The following day, we returned to find that they had cherry-picked ALL of our possessions. They had taken some of the things that we'd agreed on, but not all. We ended up having to pay someone else to remove the rest of the items we were trashing or donating. Worst of all though, Cherished Posssions also took things that were clearly marked for us or for another family member. My sister was so upset that she called the police. Unfortunately, because we let them into the house, we could not file charges. Now that Cherished Possessions has all of our stuff, they have all the power. They were supposed to provided an inventory of all the items that they took and let us approve it for sale. We didn't receive the inventory for several months, by which time, many of the items had been sold. Needless to say, we never had the opportunity to 'approve' any sales. We called and called to try to get our stuff back but one of two things always happened: Cas would not answer and her voicemail box was full or someone at the store answered but Cas was not there and NO ONE else had the authority to give us any information or an inventory. We would leave a message and occasionally Cas would call back. She was snippy and defensive about the whole situation and could not provide any solutions for us except to wait for our contract to end and come pick up our stuff. Several conversations ended with her hanging up on us, which is about the worst customer service I can imagine, even if you are dealing with a disgruntled customer. Finally, when the first of the contracts came up (apparently the contract period starts when they decide to put your stuff out in the store, not the day they steal it from you), we went to the store to retrieve it. We told Cas our intentions a week before we came, but she never showed up. We worked with the sales floor manager who told us we had to find our stuff in their huge, cluttered store. It was like a nighmare version of an 'I Spy' book. Also, he was not authorized to print out a current inventory for us. We finally persuaded him to break the rules and give it to us since matching up the inventory numbers was the only way to be sure something was ours and if something had been sold. There was still stuff that was not in the store and might have been at a warehouse. We took everything we could and drove it straight to GoodWill to donate it instead of letting them make another penny off of us. We considered suing them to get our things back, but it would have risked the estate's money and would have drained any energy remaining after the loss of our parents AND dealing with this situation. Needless to say, we wouldn't recommend this company to our worst enemy. They are crooks with no morals or empathy. read more

I am getting nothing but a run-around from Cherished Possessions about a desk they sold for me. Cannot get any documentation from them, and cannot seem to get the money they owe me. Was told the desk sold early February but they did not set up for payment until March. When I called them early in March, was told a check would be sent 3/10/19. When no check arrived by 3/20/19 I visited the shop. Was told that a check had been cut and was waiting for their signature. Still no check today. Spoke to the wife over the phone and was told a check would go out in the next day or two but was treated quite rudely. I don't believe I'll ever see that $112 and intend to bring them to small claims court! Will NEVER recommend them to anyone. read more

This shop is NOT what it used to be with previous owners years ago. My advise if you HAVE to sell something there, keep accurate records as they do NOT. Poor recordkeeping, ridiculous where's Waldo way of finding your own items, no help when you want it from their always turning over staff, lost corresponding documents to items, and I could just go on about my experiences there. I have been shopping at Cherished Possessions from way back when Jo owned it and it was down by the bridge in South Portland. After Jo sold it, prices went higher but didn't hear many negatives although I did run into one woman who was managing for a while and she was a nightmare - like changing price when I brought an item up to purchase. :( Now I am at a place in my life where I need to SELL. Naturally I thought of Cherished Possessions because I have been a buyer there for many years. I left items on July 1st and never heard another word from these people.  Tried many times to access website and never got any response to requests for password reset.  When I arrived on Oct. 1 to pick up my items, was told one had sole 2 weeks earlier and the other needed to stay longer.  I refused to leave the items and left with the promise of the check for my half of the sale price would be mailed by the 10th of Oct.  I tried again half way through Oct. to find out where my money was.  A man promised to mail it immediately.  It is now Nov. 2 and still no money.  People need to think twice about using this business. read more

They said the reason I couldn't check the online status of my furniture consignment was that they had "forgotten" to add me to their system. They assured me I would know when my consignment sold. Don't Sell Anything Here! Buy here if you want... but don't sell anything here. You will never see your money! I used to buy and sell here all the time.. but the new owners.... don't trust them. They are not friendly to begin with... but I left several items with them in January anyway to sell. They posted them on their website.. and sold them in February. I have never gotten my money. When I called they told me they never sent out checks... you had to pick them up or send them a SASE. ( can't afford a 42 cents stamp after taking a 50% commission??) Anyhow... so I went it... the owner gave me some story about all the checks having to be reprinted and I would have to come back. When I asked why my check which should have been sitting in a file waiting for me since February had to be reprinted she got very huffy and angry with me. SHe finally agreed to a SASE which I filled out while I was there. She said the check would be in the mail the next day... its been a month.. .it hasn't arrived. I have emailed them but gotten no reply. I guess the next step is small claims court. read more

They lost my five-piece leaded crystal champagne set, denied it for two months, and returned none of my calls. I had to go back four times, during which they said things like, "Aren't you making a big fuss over a little crystal dish." Finally, they sent me a check for $22. I brought them 2 chairs and a bookcase last spring to sell which they did. No sign since then of the money they owe me. This shop has a decent collection of furniture, accessories, paintings and dishes. We ended up buying and old brass desk lamp and an antique metal tape dispenser. The prices were spot on and the woman at the front desk was very helpful. This place you might need to look twice because there are so many small things tucked away. There is also parking in the back which was a nice bonus. read more
