SCAMMERS! Update: 3-12-25 They also replaced the driver's window regulator and both half shafts, the regulator was NOT Subaru or are the axles. The axles are the cheapest ones you can buy. All the parts replaced by them are supposed to be Subaru. I have yet to find one part that is OEM. They charged my dad $380 just for the regulator and the shop put in a $100 NAPA part instead. That $380 does not include labor. Original post: 2-1-25: My father hired this shop to change the timing belt on his 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5, also the timing belt idlers, tensioner and water pump. They always ask my father if he wants Subaru OEM parts. And my father always says yes, he wants Subaru OEM factory parts. My father has used this shop for years and years. Fast forward to August 2024. The timing belt is still within Subaru maintenance interval of 105 months or105,000 miles, whichever comes first. My 10-year-old son and I used my dad's Subaru outback to go on a long awaited and anticipated vacation to Louisiana because my son wanted to see the National World War II Museum. We got to McAllister Oklahoma and the timing belt broke. There we are my 10-year-old son and I standing on the side of a Turnpike with people going literally 95 miles an hour right past us. It was August and it was like 102°. It took over an hour for a tow truck to get there, and we were out of water at that point. It was quite a dire situation. And of course, it bent some valves when the belt broke. So, we tow the car home to OKC. Our trip was done at that point. I pulled the heads off of it and perform a valve job. I would have never blamed the shop for this, and I didn't until I pulled the old broken timing belt out, it was not a Subaru timing belt. It was a crappy old gates belt. So, I put the heads back on and noticed some hydraulic fluid on the tensioner, which means it was bad. No big deal the mechanics at the shop didn't make the tensioner. BUT the tensioner has a manufacture date stamp on it of September 2010. So, it is the original tensioner that was never changed and that's what caused the belt to fail and it being a crappy Gates belt, not the Subaru belt my father was told was put on there, none of the idlers or the water pump was changed either. But my father was charged for all this. The shop basically threw a gates belt on it and sent my father on his way. Chris said he ordered everything in a kit, but then why was there a gates belt? Also, Subaru DOES NOT sell timing belt kits. On the receipt it shows a water pump, and the belt kit separately charged. When confronted about it he couldn't explain why there was a gates belt on it because it was eight years ago. He kept blaming time and his memory and not that he never changed the parts. Then he told me to leave. He then called my 81-year-old father and said God knows what. He put my father in a panic. Thats why I came up to his shop and not my father. You would think if Chris could bring up the work receipt on his computer as fast as he did, he could bring up a receipt of when he purchased the parts from his suppler and showed it to me. It's because it doesn't exist. The fact of the matter is nothing was changed except for the timing belt. Oh yeah, he did actually change the thermostat, but it was the wrong one. He put in a 170° not the required 190° and again, not a Subaru part. No other components changed. This caused the belt to fail. This cost us a couple thousand dollars and countless hours dealing with his negligence. He has done other work on the car that is now questionable. He's changed the front axles in it, and they are definitely not Subaru axles. Less than a year old and the boots are already cracking. I was a Maintenace supervisor in the Navy and my job was to make sure people did their work and the bolts on this water pump had never been touched. A good mechanic will put your old parts in a box and give them to you. I would have not even contacted him if all the components he said he changed had been changed. Then it would not have been his fault that the belt broke. But this is all his fault. read more

My girlfriend had an unsettling incident wherein all of her panel lights lit-up after going over a road hazard. The car was running oddly afterward and the 'check engine' light stayed on thru to the next day. Since we were needing to take a long trip in a few days, we followed the high recommendation of a friend and contacted the office. Although they were completely booked up for the day they told us they would be happy to check the computer system so we would at least know the nature of the problem. Well, we arrived simply expecting (and grateful for) the system check and instead, we left within the hour with the problem identified and fixed at a very reasonable price, despite their busy schedule! I have been using Cherokee Hills Automotive since the 1980's. They have always been honest and more than fair with their dealings with me. I had a a very intermittent problem so it was very hard to detect and find the cause. Through their determination it was found and corrected. My vehicle runs better now than it did when I got it 6 years ago. They don't go for the big dollar items unless needed, very conservative with their estimates. Chris stands by any work they do and his most important quality is to make his customers happy, sometimes going above and beyond the norms. I'd recommend this shop without the slightest bit of hesitation. Took my car here for a squeaking noise under the hood and asked for a brake inspection. Once they identified the issue, they called me to give me a price and ask permission to proceed with the repair. They were more than happy to explain the issue to me and possible outcomes without a fix. I have a pretty old car so they very easily could have convinced me that my brakes needed to be replaced and tacked on several hundred more dollars. But I felt like they were very honest with me and conscious of the cost. No surprises come time to pay. Price was fair for the repair. This place is most certainly out of my way but I'll happily make the drive every time. read more

I'm not a technician. I've been victimized more than once by shops, including dealerships, wanting to sell more repair work than was necessary. One day I asked a friend for a referral to an honest car repair place. He recommended Cherokee Hills Automotive. I took my vehicle to them. They were friendly, they accurately diagnosed the problem, and explained the matter in language that I could understand. They also told me that some components would need to be replaced at some point in the future but were still usable for several more miles. They performed all necessary work and the bill was very reasonable. My car ran great. I've been back a few times since. Always the same great treatment. You have to schedule an appointment for service and they're usually booked several days out (there's a good reason why) but I'll wait for repairs until they can get my car into their shop. I will no longer go anywhere else. read more

This place came highly recommended when I asked around about some light body work to correct a minor wrinkle that kept us from being able to put the tailgate down. When the truck ended up not being needed one day unexpectedly, I ran it over there without even having an appointment. They were super helpful and accommodating, saying they COULD fix it but honestly recommended the guys down the street who were better equipped. So impressed! I made the mistake of stopping at a Jiffy Lube for an oil change today (hopefully the mechanic Gods will forgive me soon!). Jiffy Lube told me I needed $600 in repairs. I called Cherokee Hills Automotive to see if they could take a look. The repairs I was told I needed by Jiffy Lube were not needed. Cherokee Hills Automotive was honest and fair with me about the condition of my car (which was just fine). I won't be making the mistake of quick oil changes elsewhere again anytime soon. In addition to offering high quality service and honesty, the staff in the office are wonderful! I was made to feel quite comfortable while I waited for my car to be looked at. Always done well for me. They call to let you know how they diagnosed your problem, present alternatives if any, and proceed after you authorize. They will actually talk to you and answer questions. They try and rip people off hear by charging you for something that only takes 15min to repair but charge you for 2hours and $50 more than the actual part cost. Something that costed me $40 and 15min of my time they charged $262. Don't go here they'll charge you more and do a crap job. read more

Professional to the core. Efficient as it gets. They do good work and are understandably several days out to a week out on average when I call to make an appointment. We forgot to call them one time, and the 'fee' to escape a dealers lot plus the dealers fee for opening the hood plus the Cherokee bill was less than half what the dealer said it would take to do a specific service job (sorry, its been a few years, forget the exact work being done). As long as we are in the area and they are in business, we will take all our autos there for any work they can do, and recommend them strongly to any friends or family who have need. We are genuinely sad when family members don't take our suggestion, because we know they're paying more some place else. When our funds were tight, they even offered to do just what was necessary (replace one brake pad) when they come in a set, charge me for the parts, hand me the box with a new brake pad, and offered to just do the other one when we had more funds. They will definitely work with you and let you know your honest options. Why anyone would go anywhere else is a head scratcher in our house. read more
