Very friendly staff. The golf course was in great shape. Pretty narrow fairways for the most part with a lot of the holes requiring you to hit a club or two under your driver. Monday 12/20 Pretty tough day and it's safe to say I won't be back here. Clubhouse guy wasn't super friendly out the gate. Maybe because my friend and I are 19/20 year olds? Not sure but regardless of the reasoning I don't think profiling younger dudes is ever a competent route. Anyways, my friend and I both payed for a cart, when we arrived at hole one, the Marshall instructed us to get in one cart saying, "you payed for half a cart not an individual cart each" which was news to us. Apparently that's the marshal's only job here at Cherry Island, because we were stuck in an 8 hole backup which resulted in an almost 3 hour front nine. Given the fact that we didn't allot 6 hours to play a round of golf (and the unenforced time-par of the course is 4 and a half hours) we decided to skip the backup which resulted in us skipping 4 holes. Overall a pretty disappointing showing by this course and their staff. Wasn't worth what we paid, I'd recommend antelope greens right across the street... costs less money and I've never had issues with employees like this. Hopefully this helps you out... read more

I booked a 10:43 AM tee time with the pro shop for my partner and I the day before we arrived. When we arrived I was told that there was no reservation and we would have to wait another hour to play 18 holes. I asked if we could jump out on the 10th hole as there was no one on the tee and no one coming up on nine. I was told no. We headed out to the first tee. There was no one playing the hole so we asked the starter if our twosome could jump out. He said we would have to check with the pro shop. we went back to the pro shop and asked if we could jump out as there was no one coming up on the first hole. We were told no, we would have to wait another hour as several foursomes were arriving. We went back out to the first tee. Fifteen minutes later a twosome arrived. I asked the starter if we could join this twosome. He contacted the pro shop and they said no we would have to wait. We waited until another twosome arrived and again we asked the starter if we could join that group. he contacted the pro shop and they said no, we would have to wait. Eventually another twosome came up and the starter finally allowed us to join them. I have never experienced in my 50 years of golfing a pro shop that would not be willing to accommodate a twosome with an open front nine or to join other twosomes. Clearly the pro shop isn't capable of appropriate course management and good customer service. Worst pro shop experience ever. Ps never written a bad yelp review but this took the cake. Spoiled my game as well. Won't be coming back ever. read more

They don't allow fishing in there ponds I would have love to fish in there beautiful pond and they have some nice sized bass there

I like this course because it does provide a little challenge and if you play at the right times it is very affordable. The conditions could be improved but most courses can. It can get slow as it does attract people who are less skilled which doesn't bother me. The staff seems friendly and their focus is customer service. read more

Played Cherry Island both this summer and this winter. Course is in great shape both times of year. The greens are challenging but not punishing with their undulations. I guess it really depends on the pin placement. If you make a good read and putt on your line, the greens will roll very true. Off the tee there is a good combination of "grip it and rip it holes" and "placement" holes, although I did feel that some fairways were pretty thin where anything but a dead straight drive is penalized, but really that is my fault with the driver and not the course's fault. A few of the holes off the tee have blind shots where if you are not familiar with the course can be frustrating. I found the staff to be personable and pleasant. Should be noted that they have the single most amazing golf course hot dog I have ever eaten. No joke. Bacon, Pepperoncinis, relish, tomatoes, onions and cheese. I should've gotten two. Other reviewers had some complaints but honestly, just show up, prepared to relax and enjoy your day. You're out on the golf course, relax and have fun. Yes, public courses can sometimes be slow. Cherry Island is a great course for just about all skill level players. Just played it this morning and considering the drought situation, they have kept the course in great shape. The staff is friendly. They have marshals on hand (rarity these days) to make sure pace of play is satisfactory. The course itself isn't very long or difficult. The greens are the best I've seen them in years. Overall the course is in great shape. The tee boxes offer an occasional slope that should be level. Played this course on Saturday, what a joke! the course condition is terrible...greens have bald spots on several holes, tee boxes are not level and seems like the people who play the course don't know proper etiquette of fixing ballmarks. Oh and let me not forget that it took 4 hours to play 9 holes. You heard me...4 to play 9. Absolutely ridiculous! Tried to report this to the head pro, but appearantly he's never available. I am a big fan of this place. It is definitely one of the longer courses in the Sacramento area, a par 72. It is a fair course, relatively flat and open fairways. You can get into trouble with some water crossings and there are a few ponds, but overall it is a solid course. You can pretty much let it rip with your driver on everything that is not a 3 par, which I like. read more

I normally love this place. My husband and I have golfed here numerous times. My husband called to book a tee time on Friday and was told that kids play free. So we drove from Elk Grove to Elverta. When we got there, they tried to charge us for $15 per child to ride in the cart. My husband said that we were not disclosed that when we called. It didn't matter. The man behind the counter didn't even want to hear that we didn't get the correct information. So, we ended up walking out on our tee time. So disappointing and bad customer service. read more

Pretty decent place, only real complaint is the service could use an upgrade. Young employee was obviously stoned and hit on my wife with some pretty vulgar language. When talking to management, I was assured that employee would be taken care of. A couple of weeks later, asked for employee, he no longer get works there. This review is for the Pro Shop only. I called a few days before Christmas hoping to purchase a gift certificate. The man I talked to in the Pro Shop (his name escapes me) was very prompt and friendly and helped me pinpoint a gift card value that would be best for the recipient (I was hoping to gift three rounds of play and a cart rental). I wasn't really down to make the trek out to Elverta to pick it up, but he offered to mail me the gift certificate and took my payment over the phone. My purchase was in the mail the next day! Terrible Golf Experience Booked 1156 tee time, didnt tee off until 1240. Staff gave impression this was normal. Front 9. Started at 1240, made the turn at 345. (+3h 1/2 round) Most holes had at least 3 groups on each hole. Par 4 7th had 4 groups stacked up, ranger came by to offer water, not encourage anyone to maintain pace of play.....quit after 9 when 3 more groups were stacked up on 10. Green/Fairway in good condition. Tee boxes looked like a litter box Also lots of golfers blaring Metallica/Pantera from their golf carts. Nothing wrong with the music, but trying to tee off with 8 other people watching each hole and 1980's metal playing sucks. Youve been warned. Played free birthday round about a week ago. Loved it. Course in great shape while allowing some deeper rough/natural areas to go unirrigated. No problems with Footgolfers early AM when we played. I appreciate the red/white/blue flags indicating pin position on the greens. Greens were in good condition, though some folks needed a reminder on repairing divots. Three times i think i had a big divot right in my path. Most tee boxes were level, there were a couple where i had to look for a spot to hit. But did find one on all tees. I really like this course. The place has done everything they can to shake reputation of a "hack" course. The greens are in fantastic shape. The only thing they could improve upon is the t-boxes being a bit beat up but....really no big deal. Friendly staff/mgmt. Driving range does need help but, I'd rather them put resources and care into course rather than driving range, which they had! read more

Golf course itself is fun. However, play is WAY to slow and marshalls need to get off their lazy butts and do their jobs. Could never get in a rhythm and too much waiting around after EVERY shot. Had not played Cherry Island in close to 10 years but decided to go and try it again as 10 years ago it was not in the greatest of shape. I was extremely surprised and glad that I gave it another shot as I found it to be in great condition with the greens running very smooth and rather quick and the fairways nicely manicured and green. Loved playing the course and will definitely go back again soon. All of the personnel on the course, clubhouse, pro shop and grill are very nice and helpful. Wish now that I had gone back to Cherry Island sooner. If you have not been there in a while; give it a chance; you will not regret it. read more

We just had our annual golf tournament here last Saturday. The course was in awesome shape. Greens ran true. We ordered a burger at the turn and Geoff delivered them to everyone so they would not get cold. Excellent value for golf and lunch. We are definitely booking for 2018. read more

Yes the conditions aren't the best around but I always find this course to be fun to play. Nothing really scenic about it but there's some fun holes like the (7th?) where you have to hit over a lake. If you wanna walk during the weekday you can get a good twilight rate of like $15 bucks or less. I've played here dozens of times and the majority of the time it isn't crowded at all if you play after 3 or 4pm. read more

Course is in terrbile condition. I realize it's winter but the reasons are many. Most of the tee boxes are uneven no matter where. And I do mean uneven and the grass is non existent. Second, they have installed a new "kick golf" course into the existing course. Yes, correct "kick golf"!!! children, adults, coaches etc... run around the fairways kicking soccer balls into five gallon buckets intalled in the ground near the golf greens. So were heading down the fairway only to have 5-10 kids on the fairway running parallel yelling and screaming!! WTF! I can only imagine the law suit when one of these "small" children take a golf ball in the head. All this for the reasonable weekend rate of $48!! I'm in the wrong biz! read more

Not a bad golf course, but the staff is terrible. Landscape workers feel free to make comments on visitors and even tell them off! I was doing something I wasn't supposed to, and after the warning I stopped doing it, but within 15 seconds was approached again by a different person, a landscape worker, who notified me of the same thing but in an extremely rude manner. I told them off and went about my business. Next thing I know, something big approaches me, touches me and nearly throws me to the ground! It was the same pissed off landscape worker trying to run me over with his Toro cart. After talking to the management they still hold that the employee didn't do nothing wrong. I ended up having to call a police officer in order to resolve the matter!! My humble advice to you, if your health is dear to you, avoid Cherry Island! read more

Decent layout, well-stocked pro shop, very orderly operation. The guy at the pro shop was a little harried and less-than-friendly when we were there most recently, but he's been just fine the other two times I've been there. There are a couple of holes that are less-than-fair, with trees and the fairway sloped such that even a good, well-planned shot won't hold the fairway (sorry, I can't remember the hole # I'm speaking of). The course is kept in good condition and it's an OK value. I would recommend Teal Bend over Cherry Island if you live in Woodland or Natomas. read more

This is one of my favorite golf courses to play. The Pro Shop is very nice and the staff friendly. Some of the holes have leaves, so if you hit the ball on the fairway you can usually find it. Otherwise, you may lose several balls. Challenging but fair. read more

I had the chance to play 9 holes after work one day last week so I stopped at Cherry Island. I had played here once last year. The conditions were great then & I was pleased to see the course was in just as great of shape this season as it was last! The greens were in fantastic shape & they have been doing some reconstruction on a tee box also. Kudos to the superintendent & grounds staff for their hard work keeping the course in great shape! The staff in the pro shop & restaurant were super kind and helpful! All in all it was a great experience & I can't wait to return to get an 18 hole round in! read more

I played Cherry Island for the 1st time today , not pleased , no drinking water to speak of , bathrooms far and in between . Had a two for one and only saved $5.00 because they charged double for the cart rental , i will never go back . It took 6 hours for 18 holes , really!!!!!!!! read more

Just moved to the area and played this as my first course in Sacramento on Friday. I hope the others are like this one. The greens were quicker than I am used to but it made for a challenging round. Number 7 in particular was a interesting hole and the pace of play was perfect for my group. We didn't feel pushed to play faster and were only briefly held up at the turn by the group in front of us which gave us time to get a hot dog without feeling guilty. I hope the other courses in the area are just as good! read more
