I had a disappointing experience at Cheryl Lofton & Associates and would not recommend them. I stopped by close to closing to have a few pants altered (hems and seat adjustment). While I appreciated being let in, the service felt rushed from the beginning. The clerk made it clear she had somewhere else to be, mentioning she had a class to attend, which left me feeling like my business was more of a burden than a priority. For one pair, I paid extra to have the pants hemmed by hand. I was very specific in asking that they be finished like the designer pair I was wearing at the time, yet the end result was sloppy and nothing like what I requested. I also asked for the tags to remain on my garments and for any extra fabric to be saved. Neither of those requests were followed. Instead, I felt like I paid extra for work that I easily could have done myself--and done better. To make matters worse, whenever I called to follow up, the associates on the phone came across as curt and dismissive, as if they were doing me a favor by even speaking to me. That attitude, combined with the lack of attention to detail and disregard for my requests, makes this place hard to recommend. For the prices charged, I expected professionalism, better workmanship, and basic courtesy, but unfortunately, that's not what I received. read more

I wish I could give Cheryl Lofton & Associates and Ali even more stars for their phenomenal work on my wedding dress! I decided I wanted to rework my grandmother's 1950s wedding dress, but other seamstresses told me that it would not be possible to actually wear the dress and I could only use some of the fabric. When I met with Ali he assured me we could rework the dress for me to wear, and immediately got to work to make sure the dress had enough fabric for my vision. He took patches of lace from the original dress and lined them up seamlessly to make a beautiful new dress, and kept working on the dress until I was happy. The dress truly ended up being a work of art, all thanks to Ali's dedication and skill. I can't recommend them enough! read more

I had my first wedding dress fitting today and brought the veil along and was REALLY disappointed with how un-veil-like/non-bridal the finished piece looks against my dress. I asked when I bright my fabric to Cheryl Lofton whether there was enough of it to make a standard-looking veil or if I would need to have it appliquéd and they assured me it was enough. It's not--and moreover no regular fabric likely would be, according to the two folks I talked to today. Veil fabric is cut wider and most people who do veils know that. I just wish they had been honest with me that I needed to have this appliquéd or to scrap the idea entirely. I could have saved time and money on this now useless veil but I also could have spent the time in between finding a unique and fun veil that was me--or scrapping the idea entirely. I just wish they hadn't sold me on this working when they should have known better and I was depending on them to advise me (or told me they didn't know, either). read more

If you're looking for bridal alterations in DC - GO HERE!! They do a fantastic job, even with the most delicate dresses, and have extremely fair pricing for the quality of work! I came in with a more bohemian dress, and wanted to get it to princess-shaped - which it was not originally designed for. Valerie thought of a creative solution to make sure the petticoat I added didn't make the layers bunch, as well as to fit the bodice very tightly and create an "artificial waist" on my body, when I really don't have one! She took in the shoulders and waist and then re-sewed on the beading, and hemmed five layers of tulle (including a finished hem on the outer layer) to make it fit perfectly. I also didn't like the idea of a bustle, but she was able to layer both french and american to make sure the dress kept its princess shape. Cheryl was there as well during all of my fittings as well to help troubleshoot and come up with ideas to make it work. After my last fitting, they pressed my dress and petticoat and wrapped it up so it wouldn't be damaged before wedding day. My fiancee and I both got our wedding outfits tailored here- both my bridal separates and her wedding suit- and we couldn't be happier with the high quality work, the attention to detail, and the extremely warm and knowledgeable customer service we received (especially from Amber at the front desk- she is incredible and made the experience so wonderful!). Everyone there really went above and beyond to make sure each piece was perfect for us, and nobody batted an eye about the fact that we are two ladies getting married to eachother- everyone was incredibly kind and gracious and excited for us. We don't get that kind of reaction very often, and really don't take it for granted. They made us feel like a normal couple and like real brides. The turn around time was very quick and the level of personal attention and highly knowledgeable advice we received was amazing. This is by far one of the best tailors ever. I took my suit in a few months ago to have the pants hemmed and wow. The staff was super kind, helpful and speedy with their services. They promised same day completion for the hemming, which was amazing. I received an automatic notification via text to my phone within the hour of dropping my pants off. I went here to get sleeves of a custom designer dress brought in and they changed the style of the sleeves without telling me. The original design had the fabric tucked inside and they chopped all of that fabric off. This is unacceptable. If they could not keep the original design of the sleeves, they should have told me so I could have made an informed decision. I reached out to them and they havent even responded back so that shows the level of customer service you get with this business. I would not advise anyone with designer or high priced garments to use them. I would trust my local dry cleaner to execute what I need over them. read more

Cheryl A Lofton & Associates altered a bridesmaid dress I wore to a wedding. I found the alterations to my chest, sides, and waist were done well. I had 2 fittings before I picked up the dress. However, the dress was too long when I picked it up, and I ended up stepping on it all day at the wedding. Also, I paid over $120 for alterations to a $200 dress. Seems really really really overpriced. As for location, this place is really easy to find. If you get off at the Shaw stop and go north, this place is west on T street, next to a pizza place. There are usually some sketchy folks hanging out around the corner, but it's mostly safe. The only other thing that made my experience less than perfect was that the hours were not great for anyone with a job with semi-normal hours. read more

Most recently, Gail reworked a dress that desperately needed to be petite and was not, and made a cape component of the dress removable. In short: it's a new dress, and a much better one! Amber told me a price and on the pick-up day showed me a different price! I had to pay 58$ for adjusting a 30$ pants!!! And when I told her I even didn't get a receipt as a proof she told me we emailed you your receipt then she checked her system and found out she didn't. She ended up saying "well this is the price" and she was holding the pants with her hands. (Her face was saying Pay or you don't get your pants) Yeah, I was ripped off and I feel very bad about it! I was looking for a black-owned business to alter a bridesmaid dress and 3 pairs of pants. The staff here was attentive and quickly got to working on my items. They were very responsive and got my items back to me prior to the date I needed them by. When I went to pickup the items, there was a small piece of fabric that made a fold appear on the front of my dress; the staff quickly fixed it and returned my dress the next morning. I brought a vintage wedding dress to this shop with a bunch of issues. One, there were sweat stains under the arms that had probably been there for 60 years. Next, the waistline was way too small for me (25 in. and I'm 30 in.). Finally, the petticoat purchased for it was too long for the dress. After three visits, great advice from the women in the shop on how to make the dress work best for me, the dress turned out beautifully! The tailor was a miracle worker. Getting your wedding dress altered is a major decision and undertaking so I reached out to several different places around the DMV area to try and get some price quotes about 4 months before my wedding. The places listed as bridal experts in Georgetown gave quotes that were much higher than I anticipated (some saying around $500). I reached out to a few places that had really high ratings and got very reasonable quotes, but they had small appointment windows and were an hour drive away. I somehow stumbled on Cheryl A Lofton and Associates and based on their location and reviews, I decided to reach out through email. They wrote back very quickly saying the best way to get an estimate was in person and with an appointment. They offer a rough estimate if you bring it in, or a fitting estimate that requires a $50 deposit. I went ahead with the bridal fitting consultation since I wanted a really accurate quote. The store is in a very accessible location which was good because I probably ended up coming to the store 4 times throughout the process! The first consultation went really well. It's a pretty decently sized space with a front room waiting area with mirrors for once you have your clothes on, two changing rooms in the back, and then the work room attached to the side. Every employee I interacted with during this whole process was both friendly and professional! I got my fitting estimate and decided to go ahead and get my alterations done here. Since it was still several months before the wedding I scheduled my next appointment through email for the next month. During that time I ordered a shorter party dress for my DC reception and it definitely needed help, so during my next appointment I brought it with me. Turns out the tailor I was working with was out the day I came in, so it was good I brought in my second dress to be fitted so it wasn't a complete waste of a trip! I also got to try my wedding dress on again and it seemed like none of the alterations had been made yet, but another tailor spent time repinning some of the pins from the first fitting and marking the hem. When I did finally come in and my tailor was there, we did a true final fitting and he actually started trimming the tulle for the hem while I was in the dress and pinned the under layers for the final hem. As well as pinning the bustle (which they spent a lot of time perfecting and making sure it was right). During that fitting my party dress was still having some issues so it was repinned again as well. My final final fittings went great and the staff seemed just as delighted as I was with the final garments. I absolutely appreciate the staff's commitment to making sure both of my dresses looked and fitted their best! We did end up cutting it really close to the deadline (I had a destination wedding so I definitely was getting a bit worried) but it turned out great! So the only reasons this wasn't 5 star review was because the costs ended up jumping up from my initial estimates significantly (both dress estimates basically doubled), and there were a couple delays on my garments that seemed like they could have been avoided. But, if I have formal dresses to have altered in the future I would still come here and recommend others to do the same. The work is worth the price and I love somewhere you can coordinate appointments through email! read more

This is absolutely the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I took a bridesmaid dress here to get some alterations and not only did they overcharge me but they also returned my brand new dress with a stain on it. Told me to use baby powder and it would come out but it never did. They didn't offer to help get the stain out or offer me any sort of discount for returning it damaged. Going to try to take it to dry cleaners now. Will never go back here. Stay away. read more
