Has Chestnut Hill Bakery undergone ownership. Hadn't been there in a week or more. Got the raspberry longjohns, terrible. They were heavy, dry and the raspberry filling was nonexistent. Glazed donut was so small, didn't know you could make one that small and charge over a dollar for it. Get the old bakers back. Not good at All. I had called 3 days before my daughters birthday, and even though the store was closed from the new year, I was able to email my request. I was very worried as I requested cupcakes 3 days before I needed them and the store was closed. But! To my surprise, I received an email back saying they could fulfill my order! Trying to fill the void Sweet Stella's Bakery closing a year ago, I decided to give Chestnut Hill Bakery a try. My primary purpose for going to Sweet Stella's was donuts since I never had much occasion to get a cake or cupcakes. I was pleased to see CHB selling regularly glazed donuts and donut holes. Unfortunately, they did not offer any variety beyond the plain glaze. They did have several "Long Johns" pastries filled with various creams and jellies which some may count as a donut. Regardless, I picked up a dozen donut holes for the kids and a half-dozen donuts, totaling about $6. The donuts were excellent. each bite melted in my mouth. The bread was cooked perfectly such that the donut had it's expected shape and soft enough that it collapsed easily with each bite. The glaze was also excellent. I hope they look to expand their donut offering which would make me more likely to return as a regular Saturday tradition. As of right now, I will come back occasionally for a fresh donut. I may get around to trying their other offerings: Cookies, Brownies, Pies, Cakes, Baby Cakes, Mama Cakes, Bread, and Cream Puffs (they have enormous ones and minis). read more

There was a young girl and an older woman working and it was clear that neither of them wanted to be there. My husband said something friendly and the older lady misunderstood him and proceeded to put him in his place. It was so surprising since he was being nice. Highly unprofessional. I would like to tell you how the cakes taste here but I was not able to order one! I am from out of town and got the last minute opportunity to meet a friend for dinner on Lynchburg. Since it is her birthday I called Chestnut Hill bakery to order a cake for the next evening. The man I spoke to told me: 1. You need to order a cake at least 2 days in advance. 2. They are very busy and I'm not their only customer! He would not make any allowances. This is a bakery! Don't you think they have a cake to sell that they could decorate for an occasion? Is he so independent that he didn't need my order. Are the cakes they sell 2 days old? I ordered the cake at Walmart. It will be fresh and decorated as I requested. How can you continue to do business with small local shops when the customer service is so poor? I will make sure all my friends and neighbors know to go elsewhere when they need a specialty cake. read more

"You know what wet dog smells like?" is not what you want to hear about their lemon bar. Thankfully, I didn't have the privilege of trying wet dog, but opted for a cream puff and an orange blossom. Cream Puff- "Puff" part of it was ok. Covered in chocolate, so couldn't complain too much about that. The most interesting part of this was the cream... which was turmeric yellow. Once you bite into it, you have no way of knowing of the neon ooze that would fall out. Respectfully, I ate it all in-store, since I was too impatient to wait. Flavor was ok, but I couldn't get past the color of it. And led me to question, "Did they really put turmeric powder in the puff?" (Even though I didn't taste turmeric, eating is a mind, body connection so I couldn't get that outta my head!) Orange Blossom - Cute. Little mini orange cupcakes glazed in orange icing. It was ok... not outstanding. This was my first orange blossom, and I guess I just expected more out of it. A friend tried their red velvet cupcake (the same one that had the wet dog lemon bar) and said that it was old and dry... She obviously had worse luck than I did! The current owners have managed to get the original recipe of the "Cream Puff" and jelly "Long Johns". I used to get creampuffs all the time as a child. They were so fluffy and light. The cream filling was a light yellow and scrumptious!! I was excited to hear this bakery had the best creampuffs. They are hard to find nowadays. Well I visited family for Thanksgiving, a family member bought some for everyone. I was sooo dissappointed!!!! The actual shell was hard. Not soft and airy. The filling was a light orange, not the creamy yellow I'm used to. Not the creampuffs I remember. Better get a sample first and make sure they are freshly made. I am have ordered cupcakes for both our children who attend LU and both times they have been amazing! They have such a unique variety of cupcakes to chose from. So against my better judgement, I went back and gave this place another shot. Wish I could say everything was better but it was not! I went in and stood there for literally 15 minutes with nobody up front. I could hear them talking in the back. Finally another lady walked out, looked at me and said "y'all got a customer up here" and proceeded to walk away. A young lady walked up and I asked if they had any cakes in the back since the cake display was empty and the young lady said no, you have to order those 3 days in advance. So I looked at what they had and it wasn't what I wanted one and two there was a sign placing a limit on purchase. I was in shock Almost everything had a sign placing a limit on your purchase. Last time I checked you opened a business to make money. I just took 4 peanut butter brownies. I wish I had left them there because they were stale and hard as a rock. Whoever this new owner is has taken a landmark and ruined it! Nope never ever again will I drop a dime here. I wish someone would open another legit bakery in this city! I used to love this bakery. I never had a problem with the old management, they were always friendly. This new management/staff are extremely rude! When I lived out of town I would always stop in a stock up. My friends would always want the pastries from here. I would literally spend $100-200 each time. With the old management that was never an issue but, with the new management it was. Yes that's right, apparently I spent too much money buying their product. I was told by a man (who never smiled) that I needed to give them a weeks notice if I wanted to make such a purchase. Mind you, we are not talking about $100 worth of brownies, it was everything ... Rolls, brownies, doughnuts, cream puffs etc. And it never put them short or sold out of anything. Once he said that to me I stopped patronizing the business. That is until I moved back here. I decided once again yo give them a chance. I walked in and of course was "greeted" by a sour faced man. I ordered 1/2 dozen pb brownies, a dozen doughnut holes & 4 cream puffs. Once again he said I needed to call ahead at least 2 days this time. This time I put my money back in my wallet and left. I've t been to this bakery at least three times in the last three months and probably will not frequent again. The honey buns are large and delicious but the pies were below par. The sweet potato pie I had gotten for Christmas was a disappointment to me and my dinner guests. Today, I took a chance on the coconut custard pie and had to throw it out. It was pure SUGAR and after being cut, gobs of syrupy liquid formed where the slice was removed. No flavor, no texture..just sweet goo. Pies used to be excellent at Chestnut Hill but the quality of the bakery products has gone downhill significantly. Too bad. read more

Yes I agree they don't answer the phone, then when they do they put you on hold forever. Then tell you there is a five day wait on a birthday cake. Disappointing but I guess better than the two French apple pies we ordered in June they had a drywall mud type icing on et and was truest non edible. Everything I've had at Chestnut Hill bakery has been on a scale of very good to delicious. They make their products fresh daily and it all tastes wonderful. They made my son's birthday cake and I had to pick it up on Friday for a Monday party. It was still moist and delicious even after the weekend, (all I did was keep it refrigerated). Their donuts are awesome, in fact they sell out of them and the donut holes on a regular basis, so if you want some, you need to get there early. We love the long johns, the Bavarian cream filled donuts and yes, their cream puffs are also delicious and sell out regularly. Their honey buns are hand made and also delectable. I don't hesitate to take my out of town guests to Chestnut Hill or at least pick up some goodies from there to serve, and I've introduced a newcomer to the area friend of mine to Chestnut Hill. She is addicted to the donut holes and always asks if we have time to stop in when we are having a girls day out. Their pies have been on my Thanksgiving table and I do a lot of baking myself. They are so good, I don't even feel guilty for serving their pies to my best company, and that says a lot. I've not tried the lemon bars, but you can bet I'll have one the next time I go into town. I'm sure they'll be just as delicious as everything else they serve. I highly recommend Chestnut Hill Bakery for just a stop in, or even specialty cakes. They give their customers personal, friendly service and I think they are one of the treasures in Lynchburg. read more

The best doughnut in the world may be their butter cream doughnut. They take a doughnut, slice it in half, fill the center with butter cream icing, and top it with chocolate frosting. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars, though, because they often have a limited selection if you show up at 0630 when they open (often times the specialty doughnuts aren't available for an hour or so after opening). Also, as someone else mentioned, a bit more variety would be appreciated. Doughnut holes are also awesome, though. read more

I had a patient at my desk in tears over the treatment she received at this business today. She was berated for buying too many of one kind of donut by the baker. When she offered to not buy them he said well I have to throw them away now that I have put them into a box. When she said you have no idea what I am going thru today, He responded by saying he didn't care, that was her business. This is not how you treat a regular customer, or any customer for that matter. As far as the pastries and pies are concerned, they are perfect. My only complaint is they NEVER have cream puffs or long johns available when I drive home to Lynchburg. Last time, there was not much to choose from at all on the shelves and I wondered if Chestnut Hill was closing again. I do not promote wasting food by making too much of anything and having to throw it out, but at least take an order for the cream puffs and long johns rather than saying "When they're gone, they're gone." Yep, I stupidly returned to Chestnut Hill bakery hoping to buy a small cake for Valentines's day. Big mistake. The man working (no way was he a gentleman) was rude and annoying. For example I asked for a fresh cake. "All our cakes are fresh, Ma'm". He thinks adding a ma'm on the end of a sentence makes it okay to be loud and rude. Alas, he also lied. The cake was dry and tasteless, the icing not much better. While I was waiting to be served I heard a customer ask for a couple of doughnut holes. Rude man immediately barks 'we only sell them by the dozen". Oh and they only sell them by the dozen BUT you are only able to but three dozen at one time.? HUH? They have ruined a Lynchburg icon. No Longer A Fan!!!! Manager that was seen on the news (larger size gentleman with the forearm tattoo) was very rude and aggressive. I've been a patron of Chestnut Hill much of my life. My parents would order our bithday cakes from there growing up. With age and having my own family the tradition continued. I'm very displeased to say I will no longer give them our business. I entered the bakery today with my cell phone in hand (not talking on it). While waiting in line I was flipping through my emails etc. As my turn approached to order the manager very rudely took my order. As he took a phone call during the middle of ringing me out! As he was giving back my change he stated no cell phone use. I questioned being on a cell phone or cell phone in hand. (Now this is taking place with three other customers behind me) . He aggressively argued with me. I have no problem not using cell phones while ordering . I have no problem with being told in a professional manner no cell phones permitted. I do have a problem w his aggressive and rude approach. I left and called to speak with the manager. He advised me that he's the manager. I questioned him about his customer service or lack of. He advised I don't have time for this here's the owner. The same owner that has always been very pleasant and helpful even when ordering my daughter's birthday cake and cupcakes. She came on the phone advising that there are several signs posted. She then began to apologize as she was apologizing I could hear the manager in the background shouting "Dont apologize to her" to the point she had to place me on hold. Needless to say. The call on escalated and ended with her hanging up during the first conversation. Maybe they're just having a bad day.. Maybe racial tensions are high. Maybe he's going through a crisis. I will say they've lost my family's business. I will definitely advise my family and associates to avoid this place. No more office orders etc! WARNING to new customers .. Do not have a cell phone on you. Side Note: I was just at the bakery two days prior with my cell phone . I laughed and talked (while ordering) with the most pleasant teens working the counter that day. Be sure to read all the reviews. What has happen to this bakery? My family have always shopped at this bakery for over twenty years but in the last few years it has gone down hill! I always bought the cream puffs but the cream looks like egg yolks and they don't taste the same. The chocolate on top is good. My brother always bought the peanut butter brownies. If they have them they are old. The prices have gone up and the quantity has gone down. The one reason we don't go there anymore is because of the employees! They are rude!!!!! One day I was in there and I asked this middle age man the price of something and he told me to look up on this caulk board. You couldn't read it. That is no way for anyone to talk to a customer.
