Let me start this off by saying that I FELL IN LOVE with this pie shop, as soon as we walked inside. Service- Impeccable! If you know what it feels like to be around your elder family members and they speak to you with such a welcoming, open arms voice. This is what I got when I opened the wooden door. We were immediately greeted by the family who owns this historic cafe! There was a display of homemade pies for you to chose from and two chalk boards that held what's on the menu. We were waited on right away and they had such great patience as we explained where we were from and we didn't quite know what we wanted. Ambiance- After traveling thru the winding mountainous hills of Monroe, Va., Amherst County, we pulled up to the cutest little corner cafe with two wrought iron tables outside under an awning for shade. We opened the door and heard a bell ring from the knob and instantly I had a nostalgic feeling that would leave me in awe. There was so much history in this Pie Shop that started out as a cafe and a gathering place. It was originally owned by James & Mary Fannie Woodruff. The daughter who now operates it as the pie shop along with other family members make this shop THE MOST Special place we've visited while staying in the area for spring break! Food- OOOOOO MMMMM GGGGGG! We came for pie but ended up ordering sandwiches along with the pie. We just didn't get any pie but they had an amazing idea that I've never seen to offer a sample pie, which consisted of 6 slices of any pie you would like to try. They rebuild the slices into one whole pie and let me tell you! When you taste that pie, you are in for a treat!! These aren't just regular pie slices, you can tell the love for crafting such greatness! It was so fresh and oh so good. Our sampler consisted of strawberry, blueberry, Dutch apple, lemon meringue, pecan and pumpkin pie slices! Summary- it was a beautiful scenic route to this family gem that I am so happy to have experienced. I highly recommend this pie shop where you not only get fed pie and great food but you get a little bit of history along with it too. Bonus: this pie shop was featured by Al Roker of NBC for recognizing Mrs. Mary Fannie Woodruff celebrating her 103rd birthday back in 2019. There are also features in the Roanoke Times paper. I found out a few weeks ago that although I'd love to, it was not necessary for me to come all the way from California to Monroe, VA to get some good, home made pie. This is a late review. I went back on Nov 18, 2022. I had the chicken salad sandwich which came with Lays potato chips. It was ok. The star of the show is of course the pies. I got three different slices. This special pumpkin which I can't remember the name, 3 berry, and chess pie. All three were superb. I really liked the berry pie, and the crunchy pumpkin pie was also good. The Chess pie was also good. Pretty much every pie I got to try was good. I'm glad I was able to visit such a famous pie establishment because I'm not sure when or if I'll ever be able to go back. Service was good if a bit slow but I'm not gonna harp on that. There's only two people doing the ordering and they are super nice. The food actually came out pretty quickly, the sandwich I mean. Atmosphere is homey and gives an old timey feel which isn't surprising since the building IS rather old. I'd love to come back but if I can't, I'm happy I was able to this one time. read more

This little corner stop is a gem! The selection of sandwiches is small, but the selection of pies is broad! Their lunch options consist of a chicken salad sandwich (served on a toasted wheatberry bread), an angus burger, and a hot dog. All are served with Route 11 chips and a pickle. We ordered the chicken salad and the burger (plus cheese). The chicken salad was simple but tasty. The burger was tasty and the roll was soft. Both meals were under $8 and totally worth it. We also ordered two slices of pie. The chocolate chess was like a delightfully undercooked, dark, rich brownie in a pie shell. The three berry had a crunchy crumb topping with a bit of nutmeg that added a nice warmth to the flavor. Highly recommend either. The country store atmosphere is also cool--and this is an iconic spot that Al Roker and other notable folks have visited, far outside Lynchburg on a country road. The pie was just okay for me though. I will clarify that I bake a lot of pies myself. So I expect great pie when I pay for others to make it. After hearing about this black-owned pie shop in a Washington Post article, I had to make a trip. If you live in NC, this is the perfect day trip. My mother and I drove from Durham, NC to Monroe, VA (outside of Lynchburg). We placed an order for two whole pies in advance. We also ordered slices of pie to go. It's not often that you find those eateries where, upon stepping inside, you know you've entered the intimate and kind space of someone's kitchen. That's how it felt walking in the door of Woodruff's. I immediately had a sense-memory of coming inside for lunch as a kid from having been outside playing all morning. On this day I had taken my kids out along the Blue Ridge Parkway hiking some of the trails I had enjoyed as a kid. There to greet us were Angela and Mary. I knew the pies here were legendary. The kids and I enjoyed sharing a burger and a pimento cheese sandwich. Both of which were delicious. The burger was lightly seasoned and very tasty. The pimento cheese was a magical homemade delight on toasted bread. I washed mine down with sweet tea while the kids enjoyed some epic chocolate shakes. I ended the experience with a generous slice of pecan pie. A pie that had just come out of the oven mind you. Have you ever tasted something and almost lost consciousness due to sheer joy and satisfaction? Yeah, that happened with my first bite of this pie. Neither of my kids like pecan pie...until they tried this pie. Words fail to depict how good it was. You need to experience it for yourself. Also, if Mary is there you should definitely chat her up. My wife and I are from Albuquerque, NM. We were on a 5,000 mile motorcycle trip. We found ourselves hungry, as we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway. So, we headed for Lynchburg for lunch. Riding down Hwy 130, we passed Woodruff's. As we passed, we noticed some people coming out with what appeared to be pies. We turned our motorcycles around and stopped. Are we glad we did. Angie, the proprietor, was friendly and greeted us as we entered. Woodruff's is a quaint yet clean place with limited seating. The food is EXCELLENT. Although minimal, the menu has great comfort foods. But, the pies are to die for. The absolutely best Pecan Pie we have ever had. The clientele are a mixture of local color and city visitors. All are friendly. Were it not for limited seating, this place would be fun to spend an afternoon at... just talking to the locals. We had the pleasure of meeting Angie's mom, Mrs. Mary Woodruff. The woman is 96 (as of Nov. 2012) and looks to be 20+ years younger. What a fantastic lady. So, make this a destination for lunch or just for some pie. This is a little out of the way cafe at a little intersection out in the country near Lynchburg. We rode in having seen a review somewhere on their pie. The menu has grilled cheese, pinto beans and cornbread, Coke and pies! I'd read about this place and figured getting a pie of my choice early afternoon on Saturday would be tough as I figured they sell out. So I'm behind my riding buddy, Dick, a retired geezer who talks in excruciating detail to anyone about nothing a lot... I spot a couple complete pies like pumpkin pies, a pecan, an apple, then a coconut and a pecan pie that's been cut. Good! I'll get the pecan and/or the apple to take home! Well old Dick, in geezer fashion, gets to the counter first and patters on to the chick about details of the stuff on the menu, tells a story of his eating a grilled cheese when he was in South Carolina blah blah... Another customer comes in behind us, whips around us and moves to the pie case. A new clerk shows up behind the counter and asks to help the lady... And of course she buys the pecan and apple pies... Dick is still yammering on with the first clerk... As he looks at the menu, (remember, it's grilled cheese, pinto beans and cornbread Coke products and pie.) He asks what I'm having... I say "grilled cheese, pinto beans, cornbread, Diet Coke and coconut pie, Capt Obvious." In his geezer way he asks the girl if that stuff is good today, jabbers more, then eventually settles on grilled cheese, pinto beans,Diet Coke and coconut pie. We sit at a couple little tables, along with what I presumed were a couple of locals having coffee. A grandad came in w two little guys; g'dad was known by the locals and the gkids were proudly introduced, welcomed, a nice little scene. Anyway, the fare was great, and although I was shut out of getting a pie I wanted, I settled on sweet potato pie. The coconut pie was the best I've ever had! My family made the 3 hour drive to Monroe, VA today just to try the amazing pie! When we arrived, Mary Woodruff welcomed us as we walked in. Before dessert we had lunch.
