Now, they're sort of like a shoe store that sells guns. But I enjoy visiting Big 5 stores that are outside of Southern California. You see, Big 5 franchises tend to be small enough and far enough away from their Corporate Masters that local stores have some say in what merchandise lands on the shelves. Therefore, when I visit a place like the Crescent City location, I can find fishing gear that is local to the river steelhead and ocean lingcod scene that I can't find in my local Pasadena store (well, before it burned down, at least...) In the summer months, this is also a good place to find a cheapie float tube to goof around in the Smith or the Klamath... or if I forgot to pack fishing line for those epic redtail perch bites out on the sandy stretches south of town... this place is my jam. Sure, they also sell nylon workout bands and compression underwear... but let's keep this outdoorsy and just end it right there.

Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure. I dragged my kayak up the sand and stood it on end to drain it. The next thing I hear is someone yelling "right in our f*****g way!" as they were pulling a raft up the slope the they proceeded to step on my paddle. . I was on the upside of my boat so never knew they were walking up with a raft. If they had simply asked me to move of course I would have gotten out of their f*****g way. Avoid them. Bring some civility and manners back.

I stopped by to pick up some boating gear after their gear swap. I knew they had food but I didn't…read moreknow what they had. After loading my car I couldn't help but feel my belly growl. The smell of hamburgers on the grill immediately got my attention. I knew I had to check out what they had going on! I was told I should order the Spicy Island burger. Christine told me she wouldn't put too many jalapeños on it since I don't like it too spicy. When the burger arrived I began to devour it! This burger was to die for! A mixture of sweet from the pineapple and teriyaki and the spice from the jalapeños and onion. It was the perfect combination on the juiciest burger I think I've had! The only suggestion I have is get a fryer so you can have sweet potato fries. Hint, hint! I will be back!

He gets everything arranged, gets you fitted with the right bike, and sends you out with a guide to get you through the forest on bikes. The guide we had today was Josh and he was very good! ( after biking he added his sweet dog, Annie, to the group for the rafting section!) along our biking he told us some fun facts about the Redwood Trees and some exotic plants! Our biking section of the day was GREAT! It is actually a perfect ride you start on pavement and then you end up on a gravel road with some uphills and some downhill but nothing super steep allowing you to take in the scenery. Can the forest be any more beautiful!! The trees are enormous!! Some have been burned, some struck by lighting, some both!! But they are still standing! After biking we drove to the Smith river where they laid out a great lunch! After lunch we geared up for river rafting down the Smith River, the only un-dammed river in California! It is spectacularly clear! Since we were here in June, the river was not super deep, but we did have some fun rapids and some really nice open spaces that were very mellow, allowing you to take in the scenery! For those more daring there is a stop where you can jump off rocks into the water. The rafting portion lasted about 2 to 3 hours. Our entire day started at 9:30 and we were done around 4 PM. I thought it was a fantastic way to spend the day! I highly recommend them.
