For a chain it's pretty good. I have yet to try any of their burgers, I just wanted to eat some fries since I very much missed my Belgische friet. Everything is made to order, and you can get a freshly grilled burger (fresh meat, not frozen) with toppings of your choice for less than $5. I think I only paid another $1.50 to have a double patty. Lots of options, for example getting a steamed hot dog for less than $2, having it grilled for about 50 cents more, or even a chili dog. Everyone I was with loved the burgers and hot dogs ordered. But it's called 'La Pataterie' for a reason. The fries (from potatoes if you follow the name) were easily some of the best I've ever had. And for the price there isn't even competition. Absolutely perfect crispy texture, and pillowy soft in the middle. They taste like they were twice-fried, almost Belgian-style. There is also a nice sweetness to the potato too. Real cheese curds for the poutine and though the gravy wasn't reaching the same heights as the fries, it was still good nonetheless. But to illustrate how good the fries were, my wife and I put in an order for fries alone after we shared a poutine. I can't think of any time or place I've done that before, but the fries were just that good. I only happened to come here since we were returning from the botanical gardens and it came up on a search. It's not necessarily a hidden gem as it's quite popular, but if this was more central, it would almost certainly find itself of 'must visit' lists, and it's probably a good thing that things stay the way they are.

We went around noon on a Saturday, luckily were able to find a spot to sit. This restaurant is very small and narrow, there are about 20 seated places, most of them at the bar. Better to grab and go as the atmosphere is noisy and cramped. We tried the "tit double" double cheeseburger, the chili burger, patty melt and sides of chili fries and "cantine" fries which had queso and big mac style sauce. Food is delicious, greasy, salty, well seasoned and fresh, fast to order and receive. The "tit" short for "petit" (small) double cheeseburger was definitely on the smaller side, for around $8.75 a decent price, but I was expecting something kind of monstrous and decadent by the photos. The burger is smaller than it looks compared to similar places. The fries are perfect for sharing. I noticed in Google reviews some people mentioned the fries were overdone, kind of burnt or crispy. I did notice this as well, however perhaps this is done for a reason. As most of their french fry dishes are covered in sauces, like poutine, chili, or queso, a slighter firmer crisper fry will hold its shape better and won't result in a soggy mess. Ideal for take out as you can still enjoy the texture of the potato minutes later. I would come back to try some of their other smash burgers but taking a star away for the location and comfort factor. There is only street parking, and such limited seating that you can't come in large groups or truly enjoy a sit down experience.

I've been trying to do pick-up as much as possible at restaurants that I hope to see survive, since I know the fees for the delivery apps are crazy. Often times an app like UberEats will take 30% of the restaurants order. Last night, unfortunately this restaurant was unimaginably understaffed. 1 guy who had to manage what looked and sounded like 5 delivery app tablets (UberEats, Skip the dishes etc.) as well as take care of whatever walk in traffic that might come in. I felt bad for the guy, I almost wanted to jump behind the counter and help him out, but I waited patiently instead. Naturally the finished product was lackluster compared to what I'm used to getting, but I DO NOT in any way blame this poor employee, but rather the management who grossly underestimated the staffing needs. To the managers; you lost money last night by not having enough staff, that is clear. You will probably lose some customers too because the food going out for delivery was rushed and not up to your usual standards. Give up some of your tablets, or get some more staff in. I will be back to support you again, but I definitely won't place my order if I see the same kind of absolute chaos as I saw last night.
