Chez Freddy in the Cours Saleya Nice. Sat outdoors on a cool evening. Greeter was very nice. Ordered grilled salmon, spicy shrimp, fried calamari and spaghetti. Nice grilled filet of salmon but it came without sauce, rice topped with sauce, grilled to death veggies (I pulled some of the calamari on my plate). Spicy shrimp was overly cooked shrimp dumped in a chili oil sauce - not impressed. Calamari was good and plentiful. Spaghetti with meat sauce was ok. I enjoyed my salmon and calamari, but the rice was cold...nothing special. I used the rice to take some of the oil off my shrimp. Overall, service was very nice and attentive. Loved my salmon and calamari, and my wife liked her spaghetti and calamari as well. Thumbs down on the shrimp, rice and grilled to death veggies. read more

Great spot for sea food. They have a few bouillabaisse options, I think it needed some rice as it has of sauce.The mussels were tasty in a cream sauce, they have other sauce options for the mussels too. Good service, attentive waiters and in the Old town with a chilled vibe seated outside. read more

Hubs and I were looking for a place for lunch after having spent the morning exploring old town Nice. This place is right off of the main central area that has the various produce, meat, cheese, and flower vendors, so we knew there'd be a chance that it catered heavily to tourists (and all that entails, positive and negative). We started with the burrata/tomato salad, which included basil and some assorted greens. We eagerly finished it, but the portion size would've been good for 3 or even 4 people, it was that generous. For my main, I ordered the seafood paella (fruits de mer, which included a white fish, calamari, shrimp, mussels, and clams), hubs got the John Dorey fish entree. I thought mine was OK, hubs liked his. Overall, a decent lunch, but nothing particularly memorable. Service was friendly and prompt, zero complaints there. read more

Jesus! Waited like two hours for our entree and they brought my food before my husbands. The server seemed annoyed to take our orders and felt like we were rude Americans. FYI we were not! Chez Freddy is in a tourist section of Old Nice. I don't think a single native Niceman, Nician, Nicette, or whatever actually eats here. But I was on a quest for Bouillabaisse, a famous southern French fish stew, but I didn't want to spend €40-60 to try something I might not like. Luckily Chez Freddy had Bouillabaisse as a main course option, for a €3 upgrade charge, on their €26.90 3 course menu. Maybe this wasn't the best Bouillabaisse in France, but it was really good! I'm sure there are better versions, but for the price, quantity, and quality, I was a happy diner. The appetizers were huge! Wife's moules were small, but was given a huge portion in a delicious broth. My tasty salade Nicois was the size of a lunch meal. Wife's grilled sea bream entree was tasty too. Creme Brulee for dessert was great as well. Overall good food for price despite this being a Tourist restaurant. Not perfect though...service didn't have much personality, but it was a very busy night. If you ask for the house wine, they'll just bringing you the cheapest bottle available, €27.50 in my case, yikes! They could've warned me? Also no indoor seating means your lungs are held hostage to the European chain smokers whom don't mind destroying their lungs, along with yours. read more

I've got two very differing experiences at this establishment. The first time, was quite incredible. The restaurant hosts have a slightly less aggressive and more personable approach in getting you to sit at their restaurant unlike most of the other places on the street. You will know what I mean, once you experience walking down, and getting approached non-stop by each restaurant. First time experience was 4.5 stars. We were the first one's here, early, at around 5p.m. Hence, service wasn't too bad. Wasn't great though! Bouillabaisse with Jon Dory and other seafood- 5 stars. This was really good. It almost reminded me of curry. Mussels in garlic and butter sauce- 5 stars. Amazing. Came back a few days later, and we were disappointed that the same dish was DRY, not flavorful, and just OKAY. Seafood platter- This thing is HUGE. Oysters were delicious. Crab is tiny, and it was okay. I'm not a huge fan of raw shrimps, so didn't enjoy it very much. A bit pricey, but a decent platter for your try at seafood. The mini snails were really good. First time for everything...they were raw or boiled, and it was yummy. French Onion Soup- 3 stars. I've had better. It was better compared to some other restaurants in France, but nothing to rave about. Mussels marniere- 3 stars. It was good, but nothing to rave about. Service- 1 star. The second time we went back, it as about 8:30p.m., and the place was packed. I asked for water 5 times, until we got some. I asked for my Tabasco 6 times, and finally got it. It was mediocre at best. Yes, the bread tends to be stale here on both occasions. A bit stale, but still not bad in terms of flavor. read more

Overpriced and not that great. The guys working there that reel you in are cool but the food looks s lot better than what it is. Seafood isn't seasoned well just real salty. Nearly 30€ on average per meal. Take your time and look around before choosing this place. At best it's average for the high tourist prices. We found a lot better places to eat in Nice. This is a very touristy restaurant located in the heart of tourist Nice. You know it is for tourists because the menu is available in multiple languages, which is nice. A restaurant recruiter outside who tries to draw you in with his excellent marketing skills... he won us over by saying he would give us a free glass of champagne (Which we didn't receive). Oh well. We ordered a seafood tower and a seafood pasta. So the portions here are HUGE and those 2 dishes could have fed 3, not 2. However, we were pretty full and happy after. The pasta was hot, buttery, and seemed to have an endless amount of seafood in it. French seafood at its best. The seafood tower was a little disappointing though, because the snails seemed a bit dirty and the oysters had a weird mushy texture. Service was a little non existent but it's fine because we sat comfortably (patio is crowded, so sit inside if the weather is cold) and the pasta just hit the spot after a long day of walking. read more

Nice place for a long dinner. Many seafood dishes, and a Nice-version of paella is available that will suit groups-- it's huge. Grilled fish and meats are fine, as is the wine. It's formal dining, priced about the same as other restaurants in the area (expect 25€-50€+ person). Your waiter might become distracted when other regular customers show up, but be patient, he moves along as he can. You might have to actually tackle him and hold him until he gets his charge card machine because, well, he's got other customers, but you've got lots of time. Remember: long dinner. read more

This was my second visit to Chez Freddy. The first time was two years ago when I was last in Nice. On the positive side, the seafood paella at Chez Freddy's is quite good... and it's hard to get much better, outside of Spain of course. On the downside, you have rather slow service throughout the entire meal. It took a good 15 minutes to get the wine after ordering and then the 20 minute paella took closer to 35. While the food was good, I'll probably try a different place when I next feel like eating paella. read more

We ordered a vegetarian paella, but it was obviously made with seafood, the owner refused to admit this and was extremely rude to the point where we stood up and left. Dont visit unless you want to be ripped off! If only we'd checked the Google reviews before visiting this establishment. Terrible service, staff uninterested, took forever to receive our order and then it was delivered to the wrong table. We're from London and are used to inflated beer prices but 20 euros for 2 beers is ridiculous! They weren't even full pints! The beer was bland at best. Watch out for this bunch of con-men! Good food! My husband and I ordered the set menu of starter, main dish and dessert. When the starter arrived, it was already a main dish for me! I had prawns, crab and surimi for starter, rib eye for main dish and creme brulee for dessert. So tasty, happy tummy! This place is in the food market in the old town of Nice, so it is very touristy in this area. We had the Bouillabaisse in this restaurant, and that was very tasty and excellent in my opinion. Okay this dish was quite expensive but I thought it was worth every cent. The service was fine when we were there, no complaints about that. Fixed price menu had good options and sizable portions, but bouillabaisse (fixed price) and paella (a la carte) both were over seasoned, and service was indifferent although our waiter did try to pay attention at times. I was on a quest for Bouillabaisse so we tried this place because it seemed prominent on the menu. I had the Freddy Bouillabaisse and while it was very good I can't say I would ever order a 50 Euro entree, but I had to try it. My husband had the French onion soup and absolutely loved it. It was a big portion and he said it was the best French onion soup of his life. It is a typical touristy spot, food is good to very good, prices moderate to scary high depending on what you order. After serving dinner, our waiter (presumably the owner) decided to watch the football game instead of waiting on our table. The food was fine and the service was the worst ive ever experienced anywhere so much so i had to download yelp just to get it off my chest, i felt so incredibly insulted by it that it practically ruined my one day in Nice. I had one day to take in such a beautiful city and was alone, i wanted some fresh seafood being on the sea. I was sat in the most awkward location the maìtre d' and waiter seemed almost annoyed either that was a one top or american trying my best to speak as much french as i could ( i try). I ordered the seafood fricassee one of the more pricey of entrees and a glass of wine. I sat for almost 20 minutes no water no wine asked twice for an ashtray only to watch the maìtre d' knod at me and then proceed to flag down passerby's to wrangle in more customers, 30 minutes later my food comes out my waiter races by with a fast "bon appetite" not even looking at me or my table, STILL no wine or water, i wave him down and he finally brings it over and never checked on me again, i was sat in the middle of the sidewalk and any attempt to get some service was met with such a snub that all i wanted to do was get the hell out of there. I asked the maìtre d' for the check since no attempt at offering coffee or dessert was made or would be, he knodded at me and went back to customer wrangling, ten minutes later i see my waiter walk by i ask him for the bill and he throws a hand up at me dismissively and i watch him move on to changing linens, by this point i was fuming and told another waiter if they wanted to avoid me walking out on the bill i suggest he brings it right away. Again dont know if it was because my bad french or that i was a one top, but this goes down as the worst dining experience I've ever encountered. read more
