Burrata/tomato salad. Huge portion, good for 3-4 people.

Hubs and I were looking for a place for lunch after having spent the morning exploring old town Nice. This place is right off of the main central area that has the various produce, meat, cheese, and flower vendors, so we knew there'd be a chance that it catered heavily to tourists (and all that entails, positive and negative). We started with the burrata/tomato salad, which included basil and some assorted greens. We eagerly finished it, but the portion size would've been good for 3 or even 4 people, it was that generous. For my main, I ordered the seafood paella (fruits de mer, which included a white fish, calamari, shrimp, mussels, and clams), hubs got the John Dorey fish entree. I thought mine was OK, hubs liked his. Overall, a decent lunch, but nothing particularly memorable. Service was friendly and prompt, zero complaints there.

Jesus! Waited like two hours for our entree and they brought my food before my husbands. The server seemed annoyed to take our orders and felt like we were rude Americans. FYI we were not! We tried our hand at French and waited patiently. My husbands paella was cold and waited a long time for our check! Do not recommend at all!

    Moules appetizer...huge portion and delish!

Chez Freddy is in a tourist section of Old Nice. I don't think a single native Niceman, Nician, Nicette, or whatever actually eats here. But I was on a quest for Bouillabaisse, a famous southern French fish stew, but I didn't want to spend €40-60 to try something I might not like. Luckily Chez Freddy had Bouillabaisse as a main course option, for a €3 upgrade charge, on their €26.90 3 course menu. Maybe this wasn't the best Bouillabaisse in France, but it was really good! I'm sure there are better versions, but for the price, quantity, and quality, I was a happy diner. The appetizers were huge! Wife's moules were small, but was given a huge portion in a delicious broth. My tasty salade Nicois was the size of a lunch meal. Wife's grilled sea bream entree was tasty too. Creme Brulee for dessert was great as well. Overall good food for price despite this being a Tourist restaurant. Not perfect though...service didn't have much personality, but it was a very busy night. If you ask for the house wine, they'll just bringing you the cheapest bottle available, €27.50 in my case, yikes! They could've warned me? Also no indoor seating means your lungs are held hostage to the European chain smokers whom don't mind destroying their lungs, along with yours.

I've got two very differing experiences at this establishment. The first time, was quite incredible. The restaurant hosts have a slightly less aggressive and more personable approach in getting you to sit at their restaurant unlike most of the other places on the street. You will know what I mean, once you experience walking down, and getting approached non-stop by each restaurant. First time experience was 4.5 stars. We were the first one's here, early, at around 5p.m. Hence, service wasn't too bad. Wasn't great though! Bouillabaisse with Jon Dory and other seafood- 5 stars. This was really good. It almost reminded me of curry. Mussels in garlic and butter sauce- 5 stars. Amazing. Came back a few days later, and we were disappointed that the same dish was DRY, not flavorful, and just OKAY. Seafood platter- This thing is HUGE. Oysters were delicious. Crab is tiny, and it was okay. I'm not a huge fan of raw shrimps, so didn't enjoy it very much. A bit pricey, but a decent platter for your try at seafood. The mini snails were really good. First time for everything...they were raw or boiled, and it was yummy. French Onion Soup- 3 stars. I've had better. It was better compared to some other restaurants in France, but nothing to rave about. Mussels marniere- 3 stars. It was good, but nothing to rave about. Service- 1 star. The second time we went back, it as about 8:30p.m., and the place was packed. I asked for water 5 times, until we got some. I asked for my Tabasco 6 times, and finally got it. It was mediocre at best. Yes, the bread tends to be stale here on both occasions. A bit stale, but still not bad in terms of flavor.

Overpriced and not that great. The guys working there that reel you in are cool but the food looks s lot better than what it is. Seafood isn't seasoned well just real salty. Nearly 30€ on average per meal. Take your time and look around before choosing this place. At best it's average for the high tourist prices. We found a lot better places to eat in Nice. This was our first night in town mistake.

This is a very touristy restaurant located in the heart of tourist Nice. You know it is for tourists because the menu is available in multiple languages, which is nice. A restaurant recruiter outside who tries to draw you in with his excellent marketing skills... he won us over by saying he would give us a free glass of champagne (Which we didn't receive). Oh well. We ordered a seafood tower and a seafood pasta. So the portions here are HUGE and those 2 dishes could have fed 3, not 2. However, we were pretty full and happy after. The pasta was hot, buttery, and seemed to have an endless amount of seafood in it. French seafood at its best. The seafood tower was a little disappointing though, because the snails seemed a bit dirty and the oysters had a weird mushy texture. Service was a little non existent but it's fine because we sat comfortably (patio is crowded, so sit inside if the weather is cold) and the pasta just hit the spot after a long day of walking.

This was my second visit to Chez Freddy. The first time was two years ago when I was last in Nice. On the positive side, the seafood paella at Chez Freddy's is quite good... and it's hard to get much better, outside of Spain of course. On the downside, you have rather slow service throughout the entire meal. It took a good 15 minutes to get the wine after ordering and then the 20 minute paella took closer to 35. While the food was good, I'll probably try a different place when I next feel like eating paella.

There is a number of sea food restaurants in the surroundings. Sea food platter are averaging 25 to 50 Euros among other restauranrs. Nothing special about this place. Food wasn't nothing to brag about.

Great meal in France!…read more This was a fantastic first dinner in Nice right off the main drag. We had reservation for 7pm and arrived a few minutes early. We waited a few minutes while they prepped our table and we were seated promptly. The vibe was cool, very French cafe feeling on the streets. The waiters were kind and attentive was you settled in. They patiently answered all our menu questions. We ordered the fois gras (because when in France), the duck and the octopus. All the food was excellent, the fois gras was perfect (although probably wouldn't order it again for ethical reasons). The octopus was absolutely perfect, very very easy to screw up, but they nailed it; every bit melting in our mouths. The duck breast was perfect, juicy and cooked to perfect. All the dishes were served with plenty of accompaniment. Great meal for a great French experience. Would highly recommend.

Maybe not fair for them, but on our previous night, the previous chicken dinner was 5 stars for her. I got the beef stew over gnocchi. Not bad, but even for a light eater, it was NOT enough food for me?!?! Got a glass of Bordeaux which was good, until I noticed the locals got twice as generous of a pour?!? The second time I noticed this while dining out... Happy for them, but to see the inconsistency affects me... Ambiance - Small local business/restaurant. Prime tourist location/area. Plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. One unisex toilet. Service - Welcoming. Made online reservations, but because we are NOT tech savvy, it booked the wrong time. So since we were in the area, we just walked by and asked them to change the time and had no problems. Price - 49 Euros, $57 USD. Expensive for what we got IMO. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success.

I was sooo looking forward to dining here, but unfortunately, I was left with cheese on my face (sorry no eggs here, only cheese, cheese, and more cheese). We arrived a bit early for our reservation (15-20 minutes), but we were seated immediately, which was nice; the table was stuffed into a corner, but at least we were seated. Unfortunately, that was about where the niceness ended. The restaurant is supposed to be housed in a former cheese cave, which I thought would be exciting and romantic, instead it was just hot and cramped. This is one of those restaurants that tries to accommodate as many diners as possible, so we were basically eating right on top of another couple (who were incredibly displeased, even stating, "this service is abysmal"). We could literally hear every word spoken up to two tables away, so don't expect to have any privacy, except from the servers that is. Service was unpleasant and extremely minimal. Our server took our food and drink order, delivered our drinks, another server apologized for the delay in receiving our meal, and our original server delivered our meal...and that was it. They didn't refill our water bottle, ask if I wanted another glass of wine, stop by to see if we liked our meal -or needed else (which we did), or even bring a check. After waiting too long for our check, table full of finished plates and empty cups, we eventually just got up and headed upstairs. Apparently you're supposed to head upstairs to pay, but we'd have never known since our server was doing they're best David Copperfield impression. Now for the food. The kitchen was tiny tiny, so it's no wonder the menu consists of cheese for the starter, cheese for the entree, and cheese for dessert. Sprinkled in-between the assortment of cheeses was a steak masquerading on the menu as "Aubrac Bib", whatever that means, and the Tartiflette, think pork belly scalloped potatoes and the only thing you should order here. The Tartiflette was microwave-lunch small, but it was hot, rich, and pretty meaty for the size. I got the Camembert (takes 30 minutes) and it was pretty awful as a meal. It's not even really a dish. They literally opened up the wooden wheel of cheese, peeled back the paper, sprinkled a few things on top, then baked for 30 minutes, so it was more of just a cheese dish. It arrived-paper still covering the top, and was served with some under-seasoned fingerling potatoes and a salad. The salad was good and potatoes were okay, but the cheese was so one-note, it needed meat or veggies to dip in it. Unfortunately, I only had the few potatoes and two small bits of baguette to dunk, so my only option was to eat it like soup, which I did not-so half remained wasted and uneaten. We would have liked to have eaten dessert, but after the poor meal, and lack of even offering dessert, "How could we?". I'm giving 2 stars for the Tartiflette because it was delicious. I would not return and DO NOT RECOMMEND.

This was our favorite meal of our trip to Nice!…read more Warning: Reservations are hard to come by we dropped by and only reservations available were for 9pm two nights later. We took it. The place is super relaxed. 5 maybe 6 tables which made the difficulty of reservations more understandable. Prix fix menu - 4 appetizers to choose from, 4 entrees and 4 desserts. We were there with somewhat of a limited diet, but the options were awesome. We got a cauliflower appetizer and an artichoke one. Both were excellent. We all had the cod for dinner also delicious - served in a bath of traditional fish soup and with potatoes. The dessert was also excellent - we got the goat cheese in olive oil and garlic, the cream cheese with blueberry compote, lemon cheesecake and cinnamon "tiramisu". Every bite was full of flavor and such cool takes on the food. Now the intangibles - we arrived for our 9pm reservation, restaurant closes at 9:30 and we probably didn't walk out until 11:15 and there was still another table of 8 people dining. The host/waiter, Sebastian, was awesome. So friendly and we at no point felt rushed. In fact the opposite. When our daughter was slow in finishing her meal he joked with her instead of hurrying us along. Once we finished our main dish, he casually brought us our dessert and because we didn't order his favorite (we didn't know) he brought us out an extra to enjoy. We felt a little bad so somewhat accelerated the dessert phase so we could square up and leave. Instead he was unhurried, he casually cleared our table and chatted with us for a bit. It took us another 15 minutes before we finally said could we get the bill. He brought it to us another 5-7 minutes later. We had a great experience and one of our best meals in France, if not the best.
