This was my favorite restaurant find while living in Paris. Adorable place tucked inside the history ridden/graffiti dominated revolutionary neighborhood. I was on the search for a cheap-er, delicious, filling place and, after coming across several positive review of this place as just that, I gave it a try. The place gets crowded with locals (a good thing) so be strategic about when you go/arrive. And I don't mean just busy by crowded, it gets crowded inside as well and, in European fashion, they'll combine your party with another unknown party at one table if it means you can be seated. I wish this was done in the states, I met many interesting people this way. Anywho, the food is delicious. The Basque Omelet and any of the massive, for French serving sizes, salads were my favorite choices. Reasonably priced carafs of good house wines too! I also was traveling at one point with a friend in a wheelchair and was very impressed by how accommodating and helpful the hostess was in getting us comfortably seated. read more

I've been hesitant to review this place mostly because I didn't want people to know about it - It's too good, and I'm terrified it will become overrun by tourists, lose its incredible basque charm and paysanne hospitality but the time has come - I love this place. Love would be a mediocre word for the criteria of a place that makes you feel like you're visiting your grandmother's hometown, eating a home cooked meal with the 60 of yours closest friends...no the food is not good. ITS EXCEPTIONAL. The ambiance is friendly, young and multicultural. The wait is long and exceeds an hour on some evenings but the house sangria lightens the mood and puts you in the most positive disposition. Get the Veau Montagnard. Don't hesitate. Been here a few times, great place to dine with locals. A little hidden away off the main street which is a bonus. The service is casual but friendly. The food is south-west cuisine, pretty good value for money. Can recommend the duck breast with roquefort sauce served with their yummy sliced baked potatoes. Can never finish it and for some reason they sliced it like a 'hedgehog' the last time I went, still good though. Tart of the day has always been banging too. I've only been there for weekend lunch, it's always busy but never had to wait for a table for two around 2pm. Woild come back again. read more

O Good hearty food. I don't have much experience with Basque food, but I liked the food and apparently did everyone else as the place was packed. They don't rush you so people stay well after having eaten and paid. They were so surprised by how quickly we ate and paid (so un-French). We had escargot Basque style, Beef with pepper sauce, veal/pork/ham scallopini. My fave was the beef with pepper sauce. All served with rusty French bread. Wines are very inexpensive so don't hesitate to order with food. Small, out-of-the-ordinary restaurant which serves Basque specialties. Gets crowded during lunchtime so come early! The place is small and you will have to share your table with others, mostly young Parisians. We had the Omelette Basque (7,5 EUR) and the Salad du 5 Diamants (9 EUR) with a Corona (4 EUR) glass of muscatel (4,50 EUR). The huge salad is served with feta cheese, liver, potato slices and egg in a metal bowl. The omelet was fantastic, too. The portions may be a little too much for lunch. This is the best value for money I have ever seen The food is incredible: huge portions of delicious food typical from the South-West of France. Order a salad and wonder when a humongous bowl of goodness comes back your way. Try the duck, try anything for that matter. This is the temple of basque cuisine. The line is long but the food well deserves it: their huge portions will fill any bottomless stomach and their wine list has a good quality/price ratio. I usually go for one of their salads, like most of the customers do. Best place to try Escargot (roquefort one, creamy and flavorful and saucy, (dip your bread into it :D ) and the veal plate was amazing, incredibly tender and flavorful, the salads were rich and hearty. I love potatoes and their fried patats sliced thick and cooked just right compliment all the dishes very well! Order a bottle of the Rhone wine and try a hearty dish. The desserts are cheap, delicious and aesthetically pleasing! Yes, there is a long wait and it is hectic. It's been several years since we ate there and before reservations were an option. We arrived early and didn't have much of a wait. We were seated next to a group of 4 young men (we were the oldest people in the joint :). One of the men was a race car driver. We had a good conversation and the food was delicious! My wife had the cassoulet and I had the veal montagnard. I'm excited to go back this fall and try some of the other dishes and the gateau basque! read more

From the atmosphere to the food, this is a great place to get that authentic French food experience. They make sure that your table is always filled with fresh, sliced baguettes. When it comes to the food you cannot go wrong with any choice. I have been here countless times and have never gone home hunger or dissatisfied. Escargot lover or not, you must try the escargot basque which is cooked in a creamy, vegetable sauce. The only reason I will not give this restaurant 5 stars is because of the 2 hour wait we incurred after being told "max 1 hour wait" upon our arrival. Otherwise, our dinner was outstanding! We experienced authentic French cuisine in a very local atmosphere. Highly recommend the escargot as an appetizer. I went here 9 years ago with my best French friend, and I will never forget this meal. It was the best meal of my life. I hope this place never changes. Sorry that it's been so long, so that I don't have pictures or more specifics. I remember my meal was served in this cool cauldron of sorts, and that it was supposed to be distinctive Southwestern French cuisine. Next time I'm in Paris, I'm definitely going back. read more

love love LOVE chez gladines even though it's ALWAYS packed and i cannot seem to get myself to order anything else but the "salade 5 diamants". as an avid salad eater/addict who strictly believes that the trick to a good salad is MEAT, i am telling you that the 5 diamants is THE. EVER. there's so much meat and cheese you can't really see the greens. i dont think i have ever finished a whole bowl on my own! i dont know how they made the potatoes but they taste like slivers of heaven. the salad is so tasty it doesnt even have any additional dressing. food is amazing, generous portions and reasonable, REALLY REASONABLE prices, probably the most affordable resto in paris! however, be prepared to wait for a table if you do visit. have a carafe of wine while you do, it helps (the staff will encourage you to anyways). all in all, just do visit. ;) read more

We always made a point to be waiting at the door when it opened because it is really popular and fills up quickly. It is family-style dining and we always ended up sitting with pleasant, friendly people. The staff was really hospitable and the food was fabulous. Maybe my favorite restaurant in the WORLD, but absolutely in Paris. Definition of a hidden gem, the place is pretty small and the food is amazing. The huge salads with potatoes, eggs, and ham are great and big enough to be a meal. Also, the food here is crazy cheap compared to the rest of the city, so plan on coming more than once! Be prepared to wait-it's always been packed in my experiences. And a tip if you're here in the summer is to go early in the season! Had dinner here with my wife tonight. What a charming restaurant. It is definitely "off the beaten path", but it is certainly worth the effort. Quintessential French bistros...small, tables are tight (we actually shared a table for four with two other people), somewhat loud, very busy...just a fun place to be. This is a really great out of the way bistro on a corner shared with Theater Diamant & a restaurant across the street called something like Paysage Des Artistes. MK and I arrived promptly at 7pm and the place was well seated already. This little corner in the middle of a quiet family neighborhood is jumping with younger people and families sipping wine and beer on the street while waiting for a table. We were sat very quickly into the tightly packed dining room. We ordered the Salade Complete, the Tripes, and the Cioppino Fish Stew (octopus today). The waiter was very kind to discourage the Salade because the portions are LARGE. And he was right! Turns out that MANY people ordered the Salade and it looked really great. But we stayed with the Tripes the Stew and a bottle of Cote de Rhone. What a feast! The Tripes are, well, "farmy" tasting so you have to have a palate for it, but really good and filling. The Stew was tasty, filling, full of octopus, and good juice for sopping with the sliced baguette. The waiters are racing around and yelling a lot, but fun and energetic and helpful and quick.
