Five stars for the amazing fish soap that the potion could feed 2 people as the full meal. The soup came with second /third / forth servings in an urn / jug that kept the soup warm too. We also opt for the wild abalone that was a 12 euro supplement to the pre-fixe meal. The abalone was prepared to the perfection and was extremely fresh. Main course we had the cod dish that many yelpers raved about. Cod was very fresh, with a delish broth at the bottom. Dessert was definitely the highlight. The Paris Brest was divine!!! Fish soup (5/5) - not only is it hearty portions poured by the pitcher, it is extremely flavorful with huge umami added by the Parmesan cheese in an u likely combination Veal blanquette (4.5/5) - very good modern rendition with less of a thick sauce and more of a foam. I've had it only done better once but this was a very strong contender. Service is fast and attentive. They have English menus and speakers. Chez Michel had been dishing out the goods since 1939. There is an English menu which is the mark of a good or an optimistic place. Here, it's a good thing. No struggling or mad googling. The restaurant is rustic, authentic and charming. Everything is mismatched (including the patrons) and unique, but it all works to provide an inviting comfy atmosphere for excellent dining. This is an irregular shaped pill box with a subterranean room as well. The tables are so close that when your neighbor begins to smile, you finish it. If her husband brushes his fly-away hair back it will knock the cockle off your fork. Wanna hit the LOO, everyone in the place will have to get up with you. And speaking of cockles, they appear as an Amuse Bouche as soon as your butt is in it's nest. You will need surgical instruments to pry the tiny buggahs out of their home. They compete with Escargot for tasting mostly like what they are laying in. Here, it was a brilliant Aioli. A Kir Royale to begin the feast seemed appropriate and just right for taking the edge off having to talk to the Tunisian Uber driver about Trump. The Vibe: Early Bistro and populated by locatours. The Staff: Friendly and helpful. It's easy for them as the menu is Prix Fixe only and at 35 Euros is a bargain into the bargain. The Food: It's what you came to Paris for. Straight ahead Bistro fare that can't be duplicated. Forego the explanation of what's on offer and dive into the signature bucket of Fish Soup. Yes, it's a scrap heap of former swimming things but they are all fresh and bring sidekicks of crunchy house made Croutons and shaved Parm along for the ride. The Tomato based broth has a flutter kick of heat on the end that's just right. Who ever said Fish and Cheese don't mix is all mixed up. They do. The special Wild Game Soup du jour with diced Fois Gras, Croutons, and Baby Chestnuts was laced with Cinnamon and served neat with a carafe of creamy broth to splash over the base ingredients. It was truly beautiful and perfectly balanced between the fresh game and the gamey Fois Gras. I suggest you pour the remaining broth down your gullet before the server grabs it. I once owned a restaurant in LA and when we had "Wild Game" it meant the the mouse population had been depleted. Here, it's whatever the Chef shot himself or bought from professional and responsible Game Guys. The Roasted Cod was served with Bacon curls, White Beans, all set in an Herb Sauce and this dish alone was reason enough to make the effort to wedge in here. Next, I indulged in a guilty pleasure tantamount to giving my Internist the finger instead of the other way round. Hey, it's Paris. I ordered the Sweetbreads with diced Green Apple, fresh Forest Mushrooms all drenched in a Bordelaise Sauce. Not a misstep anywhere along the assembly line for this classic offering. Usually, Sweetbreads come in cute little medallions or Sweetbread Tenders. Here, they were two soft ball sized lobes. I thought they had been yanked from Henry, The World's Largest Steer who tours the State Fair circuit. All 11 feet long and 8 feet high of him. The Sweetbreads were so magical that my LDL went poof, off the chart in seconds. So what? Double up on the Statins. These bad boys were properly soaked overnight in acidulated water and all the membranes were carefully removed. Otherwise, your eating the laces off your soft ball instead of delicious creamy perfect offal. This is real deal French food and as rich as Bill Gates. Plan on dessert as it's the third course and you paid for it even if you're stuffed and your eyelids are struggling to stay up. The Fresh Caramelized Figs poached in Port looked like plump alien mutants compared to the stunted pygmy ones I coax out of my garden. Then, there was the Fig Clafoutie with house made Vanilla Ice Cream which was so wonderful and so fig forward. The cakey tart had absorbed all that those figs had to offer. I was determined to force myself to eat them both. Hey, what the Fig. Right? Lesson learned? If you do it right, guilt dies with the act. Take your guilt to dinner and indulge it here. read more

Loved our dinner! We probably just ordered the right items. We were definitely the only Americans in the house that night and everyone else was French or from another European country. This style of food comes from the West Coast of France. Their menu is filled with seafood as well as land, a surf and turf if you will. If you order any of the seafood you're practically guaranteed a fantastic meal since this is the identity of the chef. My prefix I had the fish soup to start. This was by far the best soup I've had in a while. It's kind of a bisque style. Loved how it was served piping hot in a ceramic pitcher with a very generous portion. For my entree I ordered the veal blanchette which was the most superior veal dish I have had in my life. Such a huge generous portion. It was aromatic, tender, flavorful and carefully created. Lastly for dessert I had the chocolate mousse which was stellar. My husband had the special pumpkin soup to start and it was absolute fall perfection and so filling. Such a generous portion also served piping hot in a pitcher. He has the steak and potatoes for his main and ate every bit up. My friends ordered the special lobster dish and they loved it, they also ordered the fish and said that was divine. Our wine was natural and fresh such a great bottle we won't forget. I will post pictures up. Atmosphere: we were seated downstairs which I loved because it has that classic stone cellar vibe with limestone arches and a cozy vibe. In my opinion this is the best seat in the House because it's rare to find these cave like settings in America and it just has a very cool cave feel. Service was fantastic, our servers were enjoying their evening while they were totally on top professionals running a smooth dinner show. I really enjoyed the meal and it complimented the chilly November evening beautifully. I'm sure it's wonderful in the summer too and all year round. But as a general rule of thumb hot foods such as soups and stews are best in cold weather. Dress casual, be prepared to be totally happy and full. Call and make reservations if you will or just show up and ask for a table. Very relaxed atmosphere with comforting French food that is made fresh daily. Came here for dinner with my husband. We had three course dinner (38 € dinner prefixes). I was excited to have our NYE dinner at Chez Michel. We got there few minutes before our reservation. There were a lot of tables open, but we got seated at the corner of the restaurant where it was darker and colder. For drinks we got beer and tap water. For starters, my husband and I each ordered chanterelle fricasses and country pate. For entree, we got flank steak and some beef/pork broth (I forgot the name and I also forgot to take pictures of our main entrees). For dessert, we ordered Paris Brest and Panna cotta. The starter and entree were mediocre at best. It didn't taste like what I expected, and I did not quite finish my meal. I could not finish half of my starter. However, the desserts were amazing. Both of them were fantastic and affirmed me that France is indeed the best country to get good pastry. I am giving 3 stars total despite our underwhelming experience with seating and food because the service was nice and desserts were amazing. The price came out to be around 100 € total, and I don't think the whole experience/food was worth it. Hopefully we will have better experience if we visit here again. read more

Me and my wife popped in here at the last minute on a day In September. The waitstaff was extremely attentive and accommodating to any request. The hostess was a younger girl who met us with a bright smile. We were seated in the basement next to the wine cellar. I highly suggest this area as there's less traffic and it has a "cave" feeling which adds a ton of ambiance and romance. The menu is sort of prefix except you get to pick one appetizer, one main and one dessert from a short list within each category. Me opted to each choose something different so we could sample a larger portion of the entire menu. Super cute restaurant with friendly staff. They gave us English menus 'cause they could just tell we weren't from there even though we knew French. We were presented with this 3 course menu which is way too many courses for me, I'm good with just a main dish but we went with it. Ordered the fish soup (salty) as an app, this steak (delicious), and I got the panna cotta for dessert while my sister ordered this choux pastry (she didn't like it). Authentic and spacious location. The staff was lovely, competent and were patiently answering each question about the dishes on the menu (blackboard). Once the order is placed the food will be served pretty shortly thereafter. My dishes (starter/makn/dessert) were extraordinary! The server surprised me when he brought the live lobster to my table first (I know it said live but I was hoping they were still going to cook it! Wasn't sure if this was a French thing). Stumbled upon this cute restaurant after arriving around the corner at Gare du Nord. The staff smiled and welcomed me in, storing my luggage out the way for me. Their recommendations were fantastic, each bite was divine. I had the foie gras with beetroot purée and mixed fruit (and a chilli to add complexity!), my main was a dish recommended from Brittany of tenderised meat and dessert that I can only describe as angelic! We ate here in 2015 and had the best food of our trip. At first we weren't sure we'd found the right place, as it looks more like a casual, neighborhood joint than a destination. But the food was completely worth the trip. And all else being equal, I prefer casual to stuffy. The menu was a chalkboard, all in French, and even if you're pretty good with your menu vocabulary there will probably be some mysteries, since the choices are all authentically--and sometimes obscurely--of Breton origin or inspiration. You may need to ask the waiter a bunch of questions. Or the chef. He came around to our table, greeted us boisterously, and chatted a long time about wine recommendations. Happily, one of our friends was fluent enough translate for the rest of us. His presence and energy and good cheer were a highlight. The food was just great. I can't remember any specific recommendations, and the menu probably changes all the time anyway. This would be a good place to come in a medium-sized group so you could sample lots of things. Anyway, we all loved it, and think it would be worth the trip from anywhere in Paris. read more

Unassuming little place. We showed up 20 min before opening with all of our luggage in hand - wanted one last authentic French lunch before heading to London on the train. They welcomed us in, even though staff was still eating and prepping Restaraunt and stowed our luggage in a closet. It is traditional French pre fix menu. Our kids were a little uneasy with the menu but ordered a pesto fish and beef pork stew and we very satisfied. My fish soup was delicious and my husband had a fish starter item and flank steak. The honey ice cream and sweet broth of the melon desert was refreshing and our favorite desert. The cherry tart has pits so caution but it is more like a cherry bread with ice cream vs a tart. Also good. Dad liked the dates with ice cream desert but no one else enjoyed it as much as him. - not sweet enough for the kids or mom. It wasn't inexpensive though so be prepared for 2.5 $$ not $$. Rustic bread, friendly staff, and a view of an old church helped us end our French vacation like Parisians. read more

This place is listed on one of my favourite food blogs, so on my first trip to Paris it was a necessity that I visit. I've gotta give credit to google maps because without it I would have never found my way down the short walk from Gare Nord to this place. From the outside, it wasn't what I would expect for a bastion of French culinary dominance. But once we got inside (and managed to convey in horrendous French that we had a reservation) and downstairs into the cellar dining area, it was fantastic. Our waiter was gruff and jolly, equally insulting and caring, pretty much exactly what the steretypical french waiter should be in my mind. For the longest time he refused to give us an English menu, and we struggled (together with out table mates...apparently communal dining is fine for us foreign folk) to piece together the menu items with our disaparate fench vocabularies. When the food was finally ordered and started to arrive, I was more than pleased. I had carpaccio of pig trotters for a starter. While the taste was incredible, I wouldn't recommend it as it turns out that it is essentially a carpaccio of flavoured fat. My cousin had a smoked Norwegian cod that was rich and salty and I happily devoured what she couldn't eat. Mains came and mine was a rustic Brittany stew with at least four kinds of meat in it. That went down a treat and the tender chunks of meat were accompanied by fresh baguette to soak up flavourful the stew broth. It felt like we were in a small village in Gascony and some kind lady had made dinner over the fire. Or at least in my food fantasy that's what happened. For dessert, I opted to keep in Brittany traditions and had a flaky pastry cake soaked in honey. For once I think my pick was the best, and the girls both tried some. They went the other direction and ordered the cheese plate which was enough cheese to feed an army (see the pictures uploaded). Our theory is that this plate makes it way around the restaurant but it was quite literally an all you can eat affair for cheese. The price was a bit steep (it's a fixed menu with add ons if you want and the wine isn't too bad at €25 or so for the cheaper bottles) but for the quality of food well worth it. read more

Wasn't sure what to make of this place at first, but I held fast to my Yelp instincts and ended up with a fine meal. Located in a fairly unattractive area in the 10th, the space is small, a bit cramped. We were seated in the basement, which ended up being kind of cool, as it is a very old stone-lined room, with an open wine cellar in back. The menu is a prix-fixe affair, with 3 courses plus a cheese course (though they were happy to do a-la-carte for the kids). In short, the food was very good across the board. My favorite course overall was the squab kig-ha-farz, a sort of pot au feu, with the breast served separately (and perfectly cooked). I love that Chef Breton sticks to his guns, offering lots of ultra-traditional fare, with fresh accents. Worth a return visit...too bad it's 5,000 miles away! read more

Breton restaurant near Gare du Nord. Stopped for a quick dinner straight off the Eurostar from London before driving out of the city. Prix fixe menu for €34 with entree, main and dessert. Blackboard menu with many options. Started with an excellent cream of asparagus soup with smoked duck and Parmesan. Presented in a generous bowl with huge, dark rustic and crunchy croutons, with the smoked duck slivers and crisp asparagus with the soup poured on from a huge jug left with me to top up my bowl as I wished. Perfect. A main of roast cod on a soft bed of purée de pommes and green olive tapenade was a perfect combination of soft flavours and texture with the cod perfectly crisp buttery basted skin and meltingly tender fish. A classic Paris Brest choux ring filled with dense praline cream finished off a perfect meal. The interior is simple and unpretentious and service friendly and efficient. Chez Michel is one of the classic Parisian restaurants that you've idealized in your mind. You know the one with the lace curtains, wood paneling, mirrors on the wall, escargot on the table... The food here is so good that Parisians will put up with dining with tourists. The night we were there it was mostly locals with a smattering of Japanese tourists. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly - anywhere they let dogs in the dining room is cool with me. I started with the marinated Breton sardines with tomato tartare filled with beautifully seasoned olive oil and presented in a mason jar and a plate of rockets (daily special). I scarfed down the entire thing. The flavors were so fresh and harmonious. For my second course, I had the brandade (permanent menu) which was good but a bit rich for me. I much preferred my dining partner's rabbit stew with wonderful mushroom and vegetables and a delicious sauce. For dessert I had the special breton cake with the tiniest strawberries. The cake resembled shortbread cookies as opposed to a cake. However, I didn't care because it was delicious. read more

I wanted one excellent meal while in Paris, and they delivered. Though I didn't make a reservation they were able to accommodate. The menu is prix fixe, and has three courses. I chose the fish soup, roasted grouse chest, and rice pudding for dessert. The soup had so many flavors, each bite became more delicious than the previous. Also, it could be an entrée on its own, which is great for someone with an appetite like mine. I adored the grouse chest, though anyone not comfortable with foie gras beware, it has a layer within the meat. It is very rich, and salty, so I would get a wine to contrast, as it could be overbearing to some. Lastly, the rice pudding... I thought I was going to cry. It made me feel like a child again. The flavors were simple, delicious, and made for the perfect end to a beautiful meal. I will go back ! Found a review of this restauant in the New York Times and decided to give it a try. We had a lovely table outside in this quite little quartier behind the Gare du Nord. The 30 euro menu is a real bargin. The succulent mussels and clams cooked with wine and copious amounts of herbs and lemon zest were a real winner. We also had another starter of salmon and artichoke hearts served in a small pot that was a fabulous combination of flavors. Followed with pan fried cod that was flakey and full of flavor (the vegis were a bit cold and wilted however) and grilled calamari which was announced perfect by my companion (but he was not too fond of the squid ink rissotto which lacked character). We found this place on a whim. Convenient to Gare du Nord, since we were arriving from London on the train. Decided to grab a quick bite before transferring to the RER to get to our hotel. The reviews were decent and the restaurant had the same name as the one my wife and I went to on our first date in San Francisco. The food was incredible, if we ate here sooner in our trip, we would have come back again. It's that good. We've eaten at a lot of highly rated and recommended restaurants but this was a gem of a find and we highly recommend it. Casual, homey environment serving good comforting food. The 50 euro prix fixe menu choices are written on a chalkboard and includes an amuse, app, main course, cheese, and dessert. I love that this is a Breton restaurant, with the chef's personal touch - it makes me nostalgic for the days that I lived in Brittany so many years ago. The risotto appetizer with truffles was surprisingly light and wonderfully delicious, and I also really enjoyed the endive salad with gizzards, jamon serrano from Bellota-Bellota, and foie gras. The braised oxtail parmentier was flavorful and extremely tender, the langoustines were cooked to perfection and served with a nicely seared boudin noir with crisp exterior and creamy interior, and the haddock was also nicely prepared with a tasty sauce. For dessert, the kouing amman was just ok, not the traditionally caramelized version that I was looking for, but the Paris Brest was yummy - great flavors, and beautiful texture of the pastry cream and the choux itself. They also serve some unique ingredients, like the tiny baby eels cooked with garlic and parsley, and the coucou de Rennes, the ancestral-certified chicken. Overall, a very casual, cozy restaurant serving good food at a reasonable price. read more

It is in a beautiful and quiet part of town. I literally gasped during my 1st bite of sole and it kept getting better. They served me the entire fish as my plat, so I left having eaten for 4. A Breton fish I will never forget. Don't get intimidated that it's empty early evening. We arrived at 7:30pm to an empty restaurant and the locals filled in by 9pm. Loved it. It is in a quieter area which was nice but not far from the bustle of our Montmartre neighborhood. The chef is personally involved and makes his rounds. The food was great! The house brought us a plate of escargot to start before we ordered. Lovely. The sole that MK had was maybe the best cooked fish I've ever had. The bouillabaisse was in a small hot pot filled with clams, a big chunk of lobster, carrots, onions ... just terrific. And we had a fantastic white Cote du Rhone, vin domaine gramenon. The food was delicious, the waiter was friendly and put up with my sad attempts at French - it is actually very English friendly with a menu in English and fluent servers if you need that. We had the asparagus salad, lamb and monkfish, and a cherry and walnut dessert. All positively wonderful. I saw the cheese plate; it is certainly enough to feed 2-3. It also looks superb, but be aware the cheeses aren't for the faint as they are stronger smelling/tasting cheese. read more

I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars. I like this place. It's a 5 minute walk from Gare du Nord and far better than all the awful places right outside the station. The servers speak English which helps, and are happy to listen to poor French too! They have a set menu. 3 courses for €35 at dinner time. I have been looking so so forward to visiting Chez Michel. We were given dinner as a gift for our wedding, and I hate to say that it was just not a positive experience. The restaurant was full of English speakers (I did not see one French couple or group upstairs or downstairs) which should have been our first clue that the restaurant's sterling reputation has caused it to go the way many of these kinds of restaurants do. Regarding the food, the Soup de Poisson (on the menu du jour) was the worst I have ever eaten. It was so overwhelmingly salty that I was not able to eat more than a few bites. When the server removed the untouched bowl, he should have asked if there was anything wrong and brought a replacement. This did not happen. The next course, the veal - was perfectly executed and simple - which I appreciated after the horrible starter. The Paris Brest was fine, but I have had much much better in patisseries across Paris. I am so disappointed in the meal we had at Chez Michel. It could have been a case of poor ordering, or it could have been that the restaurant was just off that night. I would have loved to have come away with a positive impression of this honeymoon meal, but I did not. Chez Cazimir next door was fantastic a few years ago when we visited...it is too bad that Chez Michel was nowhere near up to snuff. We did notice that the lobster main on other people's table's looked excellent, so maybe try that if you find yourself in the restaurant. read more

For mains, I had the boar bolognese (rich and meaty, paired with a red wine), and my companion got the bream (much lighter, in a creamier sauce). Tremendous. Fixed price 3 course meal very, very good. The staff was very friendly and did a magnificent job accommodating two people who do not speak French. Very much the place for locals, yet they know how to accommodate visitors as well. read more
