Wonderful dinner at this place. Kids went crazy with the mussels so it turned out to be out most expensive dinner during our trip. 1 star for service and 4 stars for the food. My friend and I were walking around looking for Belgium mussels until we finally yelped this place and tried it out. I want to emphasize how terrible the service was by saying we had to literally wait 10-15 minutes just to order (even though we already knew what we wanted right on the get go). My friend and I tried flagging down the waiter/waitress by giving eye contact and raising our hand but it seems like they purposely avoid us. Then after doing this a few times, the waiter comes by and tells us to give them 5 minutes. Like what?? The people next to us was waiting as well until they got impatient and just left. They seriously need to hire more people. Anyways, yelp is about the food. The food was pretty good. I don't mind waiting for quality food at a restaurant but the people working there just need to be a bit more attentive! My friend and I ordered the original mussels and the garlic mussels to share. Instead of doing a whole order of each, we did half and half of each order. I thought the garlic mussels were very tasty and plentiful in meat between the shells. They put a soup base on the bottom and cook these mussels with celery, and onions. Not sure what else they add but very well worth the taste -- couldn't stop drinking the soup event though I know it was loaded with sodium. The order cane with fries and a little wet lemon napkin to wipe your hands. Overall, I did thorough enjoy the food but the service needs some major work (don't know if being American played a role in this though). I was here on my trip to Brussels and was desperately looking for an authentic bucket of mussels to stuff my face. I've been warned off by a lot of Yelp reviews of some not so great places selling to tourists in the area. I saw this on Yelp with good reviews and decided to give it a try! We came here pretty early at around 6:30pm and they were just openly up. Honestly, it was the freshest mussels we've had in Belgium. It was better than the place we tried to Brugge. The mussels were small but tasted very delicate and it was plenty for two! And the fries - oh my! Game changer! Mouthgasm, yum! The best fries I've ever had. Slightly crunchy on the outside but inside a slight mashed potato consistency. We order the mussels in white wine sauce and the other entree we had were stewed rabbits. Also, they have an extensive selection of local Belgian beers. We tried the Minnekin Pis beer and that was great too. Excellent attentive service and one of the most memorable highlights of our trip! If you can definitely grab a seat outside and people watch. If you want a satisfying and memorable place to eat, this place is not to be missed! read more

Solid garlic mussels and frites. We had to have them while we were in Brussels. We were going to go to Chez Leon but Yelp steered us here instead. An order of mussels with frites was plenty for the two of us to share, and then you can save room for a 1 euro waffle as to stroll around the pretty lights of Grand Place :) The waitress was friendly enough to deal with two slightly tipsy Americans who couldn't order any more alcohol Be sure to come in a little early if you didn't make a reservation. It was empty save for one table when we walked in. The waitress asked us if we had a reservation. We didn't, but she was able to sit us at a table by the window. Chez Patrick is a great spot near the Grand Place that is filled with tourists and locals alike. It's a great spot to try moules frites, and I was very impressed how every shell opened and the firm texture and depth of flavor. Having spent many year near mussel farms in Washington state, I have high standards and Chez Patrick delivered. We also tried some of the classic Belgian dishes such as stewed beef and croquettes which were also good. The beer selection is also very good, with a wide selection of both classic and modern Belgian beers. Was here with coworkers in September. Its next to grand place, so expected tourist joint. Far from it. Most of the tables were reserved in advance by locals. But our coworker booked for our group, so no problem. Service excellent, food perfect. Had large bowl of delicious mussels, too much to finish after our appetizers (appetizers very good, but will skip next time, to finish the mussels) . We had great desserts. Just get the dame blanche. My boyfriend and I decided to dine here on a whim when we had about an hour and a half to kill. We decided to order the white wine mussels. I love mussels and was interested in trying the Belgium version. I had heard how fresh and flavorful they were. OH MY GOSH!!!! They were the absolute best mussels I have ever had in my life. The flavor was out of this world. After all the mussels were gone, I proceeded to drink the broth like soup. Absolutely fantastic. I wish we had ordered other food or had come back again. My two reasons for not giving it 5 stars is because 1. we didn't try anything else. Who knows, maybe the rest of the food isn't as up to par. 2. The service was terrible!!! more like 3.5/5 stars. when in brussel, you must eat fries and mussels. there are plenty of cheap mussels places near the grand place or a short walk away from it, so why did we pick this place? i believe it opens late and was top 3 when searching for "mussels" in yelp. this place was pretty packed when we walked in with no reservation, but luckily we were able to get a table. we ordered a bowl of mussels and rabbit kidneys to share. the mussels were cooked with white wine, garlic and cream sauce. it was light and refreshing. i believe they give you bread as well to soak up the juice. as for the kidneys, they were something else.... i don't think i had kidneys before, and the way it was cooked and prepared, made me want it again. give it a try if you're stopping by here. read more

We dined here in February with Belgian friends. I was surprised when they recommended a place in the tourist epicenter of Brussels. Much to my surprise the place was fantabulous! The mussels were simply amazing. Juicy, succulent and flavored with butter, white wine and creme fraiche. Can you see me drooling?? We also had carbonnade beef which was to die for. The meet was so tender it practically melted in your mouth!! And no Belgian dining experience is complete without Waterzoi op kip. Lekker!!! It's my new go to place when traveling thru Brussels. My sister and I shared mussels in a white wine cream sauce (sauce poulette or something) and the Flemish beef stew. Both were delicious, hearty, and satisfying. The stew could have been hotter, and the food was very simplistic. The fries were quite good and we also had some bread which was great to soak up the sauces. On entering, one can tell that this is not your usual tourist trap, despite being just off the main square and having lots of service hats hanging on the walls and ceilings. Sure, there are tourists eating here but also many locals, and one soon finds out why. The food here is very traditional and very authentic Belgian, and it is good. Not too cheap, but well worth the money and the portions were generous. One would find it difficult to leave this place and consider searching for a doner afterwards. The ambience is rather unusual, with the aforementioned hats and old pictures hanging around the place but one gets the sense that Chez Patrick has been around some time. The serving staff are all middle-aged and polite in a wise, seen-it-all-before manner and they don't speak English here, so be prepared to exercise a few French phrases. I can heartily recommend the fish waterzooi which is by far the best fish soup I've had this year. The seafood croquettes were decadently creamy, but not as generous. This place was recommended by a elderly Belgian and one can see why it is one of his favourite restaurants. While it is not haute cuisine, it does represent the best of Belgian home-style cooking, and one should try this place if possible. read more

And of course, all meals in Belgium are not complete without the beer, Barre. The waitress was extremely rude and poured one of our friends beer to make sure it was pure foam on purpose. You can't order fries on the side, which they don't tell you til after you've ordered. They didn't give everyone silverware, they didn't bring a bowl for the mussels shells without us asking, they didn't give sauces we had to get them ourselves. Everything is over priced. If I could give a zero star I would. I went there with some friends to get some beer. However, some of us didn't order. A guy came out told us no, we have to leave. We can't sit here if not everyone orders. He legitimately made us get up and leave because some of us didn't want to drink just yet. This was the WORST experience any of us ever experience. Our first night in Brussels, we walked to the Grand Place and admired the beautiful architecture of the guild houses and the square. For dinner we decided on Chez Patrick on rue des Chapeliers. Located right off the Grand Place and claiming the Hard Rock as a neighbor made us think "Uh-oh . .tourist trap". My son works at a belgian restaurant and he looked at the menu and suggested we give it a try. He had the Carbonnade Flamande and I ordered the rump steak and frites. We had a beer to start and sat at an outside table. The steak arrived hot and with peppercorn sauce on the side. I ordered the steak medium but found that it was prepared on the rare side. The flavor was greatl and I enjoyed the parts that were prepared at the right temperature. Luckily my dining companion finished the rare part for me. Our service was great and provided by a personable young lady who gave us a bit of the history of the restaurant. BTW - the diner who ordered the carbonade said it was superbly prepared! read more
