Chez Piggy burst on to the Kingston scene and really kicked off fine dining with a modern sensibility. I haven't been there for years, so this was a nice trip down nostalgia lane. The place is open and bright wherever you sit, whether on the outdoor patio, downstairs by the bar, or upstairs. Service was excellent. My reservation was smoothly handled, and my server took good care of me. I got offeres some bread and butter after I ordered, which was really a nice surprise. The offered breads were seeded, ollve, and rustic style. All delicious, especially with the sweet butter. For the main meal, I got a half dozen oysters, an order of cha gio and their Ahi Dragon Noodle Salad. The cha gio were crispy, not greasy, sweet and savoury. The oysters were super fresh, sweet and a good size. Along with the usual condiments, they included pickled red onion, which is the first time I've ever had this. I really enjoyed the acidic sweet bite enhancing the sweetness of the oysters. The Ahi Dragon Noodle Salad had microgreens, red cabbage, red and green and yellow sweet pepper, red chili pepper, edamame, coriander, green onions, and fried parsnip chips. The Ahi was charred on the outside, fresh and meaty. I appreciate that the sesame oil, soy sauce and hint of chili on the perfectly chewy noodles was separate from the veggies. The vegetables had a very clean flavour, but I would have liked something more, maybe a touch of citrus. A glass of good wine rounded out the whole experience. I was way too full at the end of the meal to even contemplate dessert. All in all, a great meal, and I would return any time. read more

According to what we were told, there is usually a special of the day (usually a soup and a main course) and the chefs 3-course meal (appetizer starter, main course and a dessert). We got the creamy tomato soup to start off. I got the salmon and my husband got the duck confetti. Both caught us by surprise. They were delish and full of texture with different flavors. The location is beautiful and historic. I wanted food not cooked or marinated in alcohol in any way. Instead of directly answering my questions about certain menu items (regarding alcohol) the lady serving us upstairs didn't seem to want to give me a straight answer. I eventually ordered fish cakes that looked and tasted like they came out of a supermarket freezer and the "chef's cut" steak that was the poorest quality meat Ive ever been served in a (supposed) quality restaurant. Chez Piggy was my first dinner for my birthday trip in Kingston. Many businesses in Kingston are downtown by the water. Super busy place in the summer, and there was a graduation going on downtown, so there was no street parking. Luckily, there was a parking garage nearby. At this point, I didn't know my way around well at all yet, but it was an easy walk from the parking garage and lots of people around, so area is definitely safe, although there are a lot of homeless downtown, which is shameful in Canada. They are, of course, not bothering anyone, but it was very sad to see. The location was cute. One walks through this little stone enclosure to get to the restaurant. It is not right on the street, adding to its charm. I didn't realize how much history and old-world charm Kingston offers, which was really nice. Chez Piggy was the same. The building is gorgeous. I did see that they offered an outdoor dining space too, which is not for me, especially during the heat-dome weather my birthday trip was serving up. This was a Thursday night, and I had no idea downtown would be as busy as it was, so I didn't even consider reservations would be necessary. The restaurant was packed, and I was asked if I had a reservation, but being a solo diner on all of my trips, it has NEVER been a problem being fit in somewhere, although I never appreciate being offered the bar right away anywhere because for an 50 something woman with RA, that option is often uncomfortable. They made a slight fuss about 'fitting me in,' but there was a small, two-seat table available, so I didn't understand the inconvenience to them? This place had a bad case of what I always refer to as "solo diner syndrome." One is treated with less care than others because they are dining alone. This happens to me with a small percentage of the dining experiences I have on trips...my biggest pet peeve. I don't order cheap and I tip well to make up for the missing person. The food here was very good. I was able to get gluten-free bread before the meal, which almost never happens, but there was a $5 surcharge (I got it as many other restaurants this trip with NO extra charge) and it was cold, which was hugely disappointing. It was dark brown and just okay...nice to have but not fantastic. My server did show up right away and took my order. My server was Karl. I ordered a Da Rico Nico drink... delicious but VERY small (don't the drinks get smaller and more expensive these days?) and $19. I also got the scallop dish. It had corn as a base with popcorn around the edge. It seemed like an odd ingredient choice but really worked. The dish was really good...however... Karl never came back and asked me if all was good. Never asked if I wanted another drink. In fact, he came back as I was getting ready to take my last bite and started picking up the plate before I fully confirmed I was done, but I was like...whatever. He didn't have much care about my service in my opinion. I felt very disappointed as that was the first dinner of my trip. He brought the bill right away, and I wanted to pay with my debit, but needed to transfer $ over from my savings to chequing account. He not only gave me the bill but shoved the debit machine in my face. I felt pressured and just paid with my credit card instead of taking my time to transfer the $ over. That dinner made me feel insignificant and pushed out, very rushed. Although the food was amazing because of the way they treat solo diners, I would not eat there again. But for parties of more than one, the decor and building are gorgeous and the food is very good, but if I'm paying $100 with tip to eat solo, the service should be equally as good as the food. If you want great scallops and fantastic service, Aqua Terra blows this place out of the water. read more

The food was tasty and the service was fast. The restaurant was located down a narrow lane which opened into an open air grotto. Clearly they serve outside when the weather isn't cold. I ordered their Black, White, Green Scallops (5/5) and I LOVED the scallops, they were cooked perfectly and a nice size. The asparagus, micro greens, and black rice complimented the flavours well and the broth was to die for. Had a fantastic experience at Chez Piggy! It was after the lunch rush, on a cold and wet November Sunday, so the physical and human warmth was extremely welcome. Truly awesome service, with some French thrown in when our waitress heard us speak the language. Another attendant went the extra mile to help us find our way to the station. I've been here for dinner quite a long time ago, remembered it was pretty decent (don't remember enough to review) so stopped by for lunch recently. Got the Creamy Mushroom Gnocchi ($23) as nothing else on the lunch menu really looked that appealing. It was decent honestly. I typically don't like pastas that overdo it with cheese, and gnocchi definitely falls under that category since its stuffed, but this was definitely one of the better gnocchi's I've tried. They put some root vegetable chips in there too which was surprisingly a nice touch. Overall pretty solid. I'd come back to Chez Piggy, but probably only for dinner since their lunch selection doesn't appeal to me as much. read more

Drove through Kingston on my way back to Toronto and decided to stop here for a late lunch. We were sat on the patio with our dog (glad they could accommodate the dog!). It was a large patio, comfortable, good ambience. I ordered the mussels, while my partner ordered the Korean fried chicken sandwich and Vietnamese spring rolls to share. I enjoyed the mussels, nothing too special but satisfying nonetheless. My partner said the chicken was underwhelming and that the bun was quite dry. The fries were not bad though! Surprisingly, the Vietnamese spring rolls were our favourite. It felt kind of out of place on the menu but it was actually quite delicious. This place was a solid spot for our lunch. Located just steps from The Springer Market Square, which makes it the perfect place for a lunch stop after the Farmers Market on a Saturday morning. We discovered it thanks to local friends that were taking us around Kingston for the weekend. The food her was very fresh and exactly what you'd expect out a casual lunch date. They had an amazing selection of craft sandwiches, salads, pasta, and mains. All the bread is made fresh in their sister bakery located at the front of the restaurant call Pan Chancho which makes it extra special and superior than any other ordinary sandwich. The atmosphere of this place is especialy captivating thanks to their massive gorgeous patio with lots of shade casting from the enormous tree that they have in at the back. Felt very fresh and quaint, with a touch of French flare thanks to the cobblestone ally ways and quarters surrounding their location. Service was friendly and brief, nothing over the top here. Even though they were busy and we got their a peak lunch time, it was very efficient and attentive. Definitely worth visiting this place if you are looking for a casual lunch date with friends or even solo. I think it makes for a great spot to grab a drink or coffee, a good book to seat and enjoy the afternoon in their patio during a hot summer day. read more

I lived in Kingston for four years as an undergrad without ever dining here. It's a Kingston icon and I intended to rectify my four years of negligence on a family trip to good ol' K-town this past summer. I made our reservation by phone well in advance of our trip, knowing the popularity of the restaurant and especially the additional restrictions for COVID. Good thing I did because even over a week in advance, I wasn't able to get my first choice of dining time for 4. I was provided with the explanation that the seating times are scheduled in the event that e.g. it rains and everyone needs to dine indoors. I was offered the choice between indoor and outdoor seating, and went with the outdoor seating in spite of the fact that hub generally doesn't want to deal with the elements and insects. Even with reservations, people were lined up in order for the staff to screen, prep and seat everyone properly. The restaurant has 2 entrances and good job for them because they were able to direct outgoing traffic out of the other entrance. We were a party of four and not disappointed with our patio seating. It did look like rain was imminent but it was very sparse, and we had to work a bit to adjust the chairs so we could be under the umbrella and still have space to keep our bags and things dry while we ate. The patio is beautiful but if I could add a recommendation, it's that guests have a means of dealing with belongings better. The food was fantastic, no question. They take their cooking very seriously here and are obviously not getting lax in order to preserve their reputation. Between the 4 of us we had one appetizer, 3 "fancy" drinks, 4 entrees and 2 desserts. With tip we spent about $230.00. I laugh because we paid less for our accommodation! I'm glad I finally made it for a lovely meal here. I don't think I would have appreciated it even if I had come sooner all those years ago. This restaurant was recommended to me by a bar tender from another restaurant I had been to in Kingston. I even mentioned when I came in "Mike recommend this restaurant to me!" Weekday and by myself so I went and sat at the bar to have dinner. Here on business. The bar tender seemed engaged at first telling me the specials etc. I ordered a cocktail which was great. After that I was basically ignored. Not busy, place was empty. Not a single other person at the bar. I had to get his attention to ASK for a glass of water. Mostly he was on his phone scrolling. Started to realize his ignorance when I said "Hey man can I get some water and maybe something else to drink?" I had finished my cocktail 20 min ago. Terrible, will never go back. As an out of town visitor, my friend wanted me to enjoy a nice lunch in Kingston. Chez Piggy was recommended. Tucked away, down an ally we found the restaurant. After being seated by courteous staff, I did explain to the server that my companion was on a restricted diet, would not be ordering from the menu and did bring her own lunch. Server said that was ok. Shortly after my lunch arrived, so too did the manager/owner. She chastised my friend for bringing in food. "We don't allow outside food being brought in" and repeatedly said "You should have called ahead". I'm not sure how that was helpful - no room for spontaneity in her world. I was mortified, my friend deeply embarrassed. Said manager/owner lectured us like we were 12 year olds, then said it's okay this time but don't do it again. I suppose you could say we were left to feel ashamed. Not only did she not think to wonder why someone would bring in their own food she did not think to ask us either. Even to ask if there was anything on the menu that they could possibly prepare and modify that could work for her. To clarify, my friend's lunch was not a take out order from another restaurant, it was not McDonald's, or a pizza. It was a small serving of vegetables and chicken in a clear glass bowl. Very discreet. A meal for a person recovering from a very serious, life threatening disease and surgery resulting in a lifetime of careful meal prep. Maybe that was our cue to leave, maybe we should have challenged her, but we didn't. We ate our lunch, tipped the server and went on our way. 24 hours later, and it still bugs me. The service industry is tough but we were not difficult customers. If anything the manager could have had a quiet word as we headed out the door. I'm not sure what she was trying to prove, but the smug look on her face and the shear look of embarrassment on my dear friend's face said it all. Chez Piggy - good food, nice wait staff. My love for the Pig knows few bounds. It is a nostalgic favourite where the food is almost beside the point. Love the location, love the design, love the history, love the service and the great food is just a bonus. There are so many inventive options. Consider starting with the hummus and house-made pita ($14). The Châ Giô salad is enough for a hearty meal with leftovers. The mussels Piri Piri ($21) can be sopped up with the dinner rolls of which I dream. Sustainable oyster options change daily. Behold one of the few restos that still offers alcohol at reasonable prices. A pint of Steamwhistle is $7, and there are sub $15 wines by the glass, a rarity these days. As my be expected in a university town, there is turnover amongst the staff, but somehow they manage to always have gems on staff. Do stop by Pan Chancho which is the bakery wing of the Pig to snap up some of the delicious dinner rolls and other delights. Note to management: would you consider bringing back Ly's ribs? read more

I need to say right off the bat... the duck wings were the best I've EVER had. They're SUPER crispy and ridiculously delicious. Do yourself a MASSIVE favour and order them. Okay, onto the other stuff. The bread is from their sister restaurant, Pan Chancho, and it is as legit as it comes. The fish of the day was really good. Steelhead with black rice, spicy sweet potato mash and some sort of green sauce. My girlfriend had the steak which was also very good, with some BOMB potatoes. Delicious meal, love the vibe and feel of the restaurant, and the booze selection is pretty awesome too. 100% recommend. 5 stars. read more

My family has always made the venture over to Chez Piggy while visiting in Kingston from Wolfe Island. This has been a summer staple and a must do when were up there so after years missing out, my Aunt took my boyfriend and I for a special meal. She immediately raved about her new addiction to their oysters and after deciding on a cocktail from their large drink menu did we all scarf down our own platter of 12 oysters each. I'm from Florida and I found these oysters to be superb, truly some of the best I've ever had. I loved the simple pairing of finely diced shallots in red wine vinegar and the freshly grated horse radish. I'm glad I took a glance around at other tables before I ordered my entree in which I was eyeing their turkey club sandwich when I noticed just how large it was. My boyfriend and I ended up sharing that entree which was perfect size for us----there was no way I could finish the entirety of the plate on my own unless I was starving. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious, the sandwich truly well made and thoughtful. My aunt got the grilled cheese with avocado in which we all loved her grated carrot salad which was a perfect refreshing bite when sitting out on the warm patio. I would definitely come back, but did note that it was pretty expensive compared to my other meals in Kingston. My friends and I drove from NY to meet another group at this bar, but the bouncer with a 49ers hat insisted our DD was too drunk to enter when none of us (and obv not him) had a single drink yet. We went to Red House across the way and the bouncers were very professional and polite. When we met with our other friend group, they said the bouncer at Chez Piggy was accusing them of having fake IDs because one of them looked young and their IDs were from different states. (Thats kinda how the military works.) Saw multiple other people in line get a hard time and turned around for no reason. If you're at max capacity just say so. You don't have to let the insecure guy assert dominance. Will avoid next visit. read more

This was an interesting venue. It was tucked away in a square that was very cute, but a bit hard to find. It was a cute place, but the decor was a bit confusing. I wasn't sure what they were going for, but I loved the huge stone wall. They then had some native american-esque art that didn't quite fit in with the tables and that stone wall. The food was overall a good amount of variety. Seafood, meat, vegetarian, were all options. I personally got the rock crab benedict which proved to be perfectly seasoned. I enjoyed my meal very much. The home fries were very crunchy as well. Perfect amount of hollandaise, but I would say there is room for improvement for its flavor. Prices were good at about 13-16 canadian. I would love for the chance to try more dishes here before making a different review, but for now, based on decor, overall flavors, accessibility, it gets these stars. read more

Chez Piggy is a must for us whenever we travel between Toronto & Ottawa or back. Today did not disappoint. We started with (besides a basket of delicious bread from their bakery Pan Chancho) an order of Chia Gio, Vietnamese Spring Rolls. Delicious as always. Hubby says it's worth the trip just for those. I ordered the Salade Niçoise with Arctic Char which came with seasonal vegetables. The char could only be described as medium rare and was to die for! Mouth-watering. The grilled half-lemon was an indication of their attention to detail. Went for a road trip to Kingston for the day. I reccomend it if you have the time. Beautiful city and not as crowded as Toronto lake shore. Anyway. Decided to try this place out as the menu looked Interesting. Reviews were up and down but I decided to see for myself. This place had a mix of foods so I wouldn't give it a specific category but the closest would be French bistro. Started off with the Seafood platter to share .. Tuna tataki, steamed snow crab, PEI oysters smoked mussels and shrimp. It was enough for the of us and it was nice and fresh. Paired it with a nice Flying monkey beer. I ordered the 3 course pre fixe. It changes according to the day I guess. It started with Salad and croquette, was good. Nice and light... it the portion was small.. for the main, it was rack of boar...it was very good paired with a nice berry sauce and wild carrots and potatoes. Not too gamey taste which was nice. Finished off with the chocolate cake. Overall service was excellent.. the prices were a little high for what you got..i mean it was good ut notnto the level of some other French places that I have been to fornthe same price e point. but then again, it does cater to tourists so expect a higher than average price. Tucked away without glaring signs, we were so impressed with our fast lunch on Saturday that we made reservations for the next day's dinner... and loved both meals. Regret: we didn't try breakfasts. Accommodating front staff and doting servers with a fantastic menu selection. Saturday Lunch for us was a Châ Giô Salad and soup of the day and a 1/2 sandwhich & soup. Sunday: Roast Beef w/Yorkshire Pudding Would've liked to have tried so much more, such as the Lemon Pepr Duck Wings. Popular, given the crowds enjoying their meals, yet quiet enough for proper pleasant conversations on both occasions (1st downstairs, 2nd upstairs) with eclectic decor that enhances your feeling of having a special meal out.
