Possibly the worst oral surgeon in Austin and surrounding areas. Capital Oral & Maxillofacial…read moreSurgery with Dr. Marc Smith is most the unprofessional place to go to remove teeth. Please save yourself time and money. Dr. Smith comes off arrogant, rude and unprofessional. He definitely did NOT take the time to discuss the option of having the others removed, the details of the procedure, and what levels of sedation are available. The way it was discussed was not thorough. After the visit I did look elsewhere, but because of timing I came back. Make sure you do not come back. Look elsewhere. The staff does not know how to schedule your appointment. Be careful. Theresa tries to get you in but the timing is off, the entire office is off and the experience will leave you in aww in the most WORST way! They do not check in with you to see how you are--- so don't expect a call back. Possibly the most rudest form of respect in the lowest way possible. If you plan on doing ANY sedation look elsewhere. Do not do it or you will regret it. Highly DO NOT RECOMMEND!

The procedure went well, I did not experience any pain or discomfort during and Mark and his team were professional and courteous. If you need dental work done, head here, you will be in good hands. Edit: It is now one week since the surgery. Marc used a local time released anesthetic on the extraction site and told me around day 3 there would be some pain. Day 1-3 there was almost no pain, on day 4 and 5 my jaw was a little tight but still very little pain, the surgery is now healed as far as I can tell and I couldn't be happier with the results. If you want an pain free extraction experience Marc is the guy to see!

Amazing experience! I truly felt like a family member. I didn't want a big box dental experience…read more I was tired of driving to Cedar Park to see my denistry office of 20 years. My hygienist there recommended Burk Family Denistry right here in Pflugerville. From Pam in the front office to both Dr. Burk's and Melanie, I could have never imagined I would have such a wonderful experience. I had so many X-rays of my teeth, which I never experienced at my previous office. Every X-ray was explained to me by Dr. Sara Burk, and recommendations provided. She even cleaned my teeth, which I have never had done by a dentist yet, only by a hygienist. A total game changer for me. My visit there made my day.

In the past several years, Dr. Burk has helped me, my husband and our two sons with fillings, tooth extractions, veneers, and anything else that has come up, and has done so cheerfully and with minimal pain and maximum efficiency and honesty. I've said before that Dr. Burk is a dentist that embraces the conservative route when it comes to his advice on dental procedures--the less is more approach. You always feel that the choice is ultimately yours and never feel that you are pushed to get extraneous procedures, as I have experienced elsewhere. I want to give an example of what a typical appointment is like with Dr. Burk: Today, as he helped my 9 year old through his first tooth extraction, he came out to the waiting room to talk us through it first. My son was understandably nervous, but Dr. Burk just gently walked us through it, then asked several times throughout the procedure what questions we had. His pain management technique is honestly the best ever -- a few quick little shots of local anesthetic, and you're numb. My son hardly felt anything. Five minutes into the procedure, he plunked the extracted tooth down on the tray, and my son didn't even realize what had happened. I know from previous experience that Dr. Burk's staff will text us in the coming days to check in and make sure everything is going well. Upon checking out, our hygienist told me that because Dr. Burk had ordered an additional x-ray beyond the one our orthodonist had initially provided, they weren't going to charge us for it. This is just another example of how honest this dentist is. Sadly, I don't know how common that is today, but I know for sure that as long as he is in practice, he's going to be our dentist.

Dr. Shelton extracted my #2 molar yesterday. He numbed me up--slowly and painlessly! He then loosened the tooth--using a slow, careful rocking notion. When the tooth was completely loosened and unmoored from its dock, like a mussel, he lifted it out--painlessly, and without the drama of my previous extraction! I had no pain last night and I have no pain today! But wait! There's More! Piling on the Potential for Pain and Drama at the Dentist! I also got a crown removed and a temporary crown installed yesterday, on the #3 molar, next door to #2 extraction. This was done before the extraction, to keep the blood and gut potential out of the vacuum, as nature abhors a vacuum!there was the usual loud banging drilling pushing and pulling.then pushing tapping on typewriters ribbon, then more drilling to place the temporary crown that fit perfectly. I thought perhaps it was the anesthesia that kept me from ever feeling the temporary. But no, I don't even notice it today. So that's two potentially very painful dental procedures, done painlessly. As a dental patient, That is everything I could ask for! Dr. Shelton has been my dentist for 30 years. He listens and he is kind and caring. I also think his pricing is very fair and reasonable. Dental care could be, should be less in a just world. But I believe the technology that has made once painful and imprecise dental, painless and perfect is Worth It!

He is by far one of the finest oral surgeons in town and I would go back to him in a heartbeat (hopefully I won't need to!) I had to go to him for a corrective wisdom tooth surgery. My first (horrible) surgeon left part of one tooth intact in the gum because it was too close to a nerve. Unfortunately the tooth fragment started to decay and needed to be removed before it became something much worse. Dr Kern was patient and informative in my consultation and spent all the time I wanted discussing every part of the surgery. It turned out that my situation was pretty bad and the tooth was completely wrapped around a nerve. But Dr Kern was able to completely remove the tooth with no nerve damage at all. And he continued to see me for multiple follow-ups to deal with any and all pain I was experiencing. I don't just mean I was seen by his nurse--Dr Kern himself INSISTED he see me every two days for at least two weeks, and made a point to show up and talk to me himself. He is an awesome doctor and I couldn't possibly recommend him highly enough.

Kern, DDS, MD at Austin Oral Surgery in Austin, TX, in preparation for two dental implants. I was 76 years old at the time. The procedure lasted more than twice as long as planned (3 hours under general anesthesia in his office, without an anesthesiologist or standard Deep Vein Thombosis prevention protocols like compression wraps). Nine days later, I developed severe swelling in my right leg. I was diagnosed with three blood clots (DVT) -- above, below, and behind the knee. I was hospitalized, put on blood thinners, and referred to a hematologist and vascular surgeon. All other risk factors were ruled out. My hematologist concluded the clots were a direct result of the surgery. I now (20 months later) live with permanent vein damage (Post Thrombotic Syndrome). My mobility is severely limited and my quality of life has deteriorated. When I obtained the surgical report from Dr. Kern 5 months later, I was shocked to find that it described the procedure as "uneventful." He made no mention of the extended time, complications, or excessive bleeding that he admitted to me during a follow-up visit -- with his nurse present. In my opinion, this omission was deliberate and does not meet the standards of care patients deserve. I filed a formal complaint with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. After nearly a year-long investigation, the Board required Dr. Kern to take continuing education courses in Risk Management, Sedation of Medically Compromised Patients, and Record Keeping -- but imposed no public disciplinary action. He continues to practice without a public record of this case. I am sharing my story to help others make informed decisions. This was my personal experience and reflects my sincere opinion based on medical records and interactions with multiple physicians.
