I have already left one glowing review but I just left from another visit today and I just want to reiterate how happy I am. I have heard nightmares from people online about their dentures. I think this is my third or fourth time back for adjustments since I got a bottom denture from AFD. They are so accommodating and kind. They keep going until it is working for you. I think we finally worked out all the kinks and I was overwhelmed with emotion about how good my denture felt when I left today. Amazing care. I've never had this thorough of dental care. I loved my previous dentist and was loyal to him but we relocated to Austin a little less than a year ago and so we can't go to Huntington Beach for cleanings anymore. No problem this women run business has all the cool tech and amazing client care I have come to adore and they have amazing bedside manner. I appreciate that your first appointment is thoroughly checking your baseline and you can see over your next cleanings what progress needs to be made and they track it for you. They have the coolest 3D imagery technology too. I also had my teeth whitened (over $1000) for my wedding and it whitened my teeth 2 -2 &1/2 levels which made a difference in the close up pictures! Because of them I'm more motivated to floss because I want to improve my progress! They are also incredible about trying to respect your time and schedule you if you have an emergency. Definitely a no-go / Wouldn't recommend / Sketchy billing vibes. Their reviews are overwhelmingly positive, well, exceptions do happened!. I was being misled by both the google and yelp reviews to schedule my routine dental cleaning as a new patient with Austin Family Dentistry. Before reading my long post , do yourself a favor- ask this office to send pre -authorization for any services you want them to provide you. Especially if you're a new patient and never dealt with them before. This process only takes 10 days for insurance company to process and mail you details in letter. Do not proceed until you see the estimated charges and types of service they're billing for. So, the dentist I dealt with? Total upsell mode on services I didn't even need or didn't even have an existing condition for why I was there. Here's my play-by-play: Walk into this swanky office, meet Dr. "Chatty" , Kara B Diemer, DDS, who's all nice and stuff. We chat about life , and then off to a marathon x-ray and diagnosis sesh like an hour performed by her assistant. But hold up, no actual teeth cleaning happened, can you believe it? And no explanation whatsoever. And then they're like, "You're good to bounce," drop me a co-pay bomb, and hand over these fancy pamphlets - one for a $1000 cavity treatment plan and another suggesting an $8000 dental implant. Wild, right? I'm like, "Nah, not interested." But get this, they still want me to sign these papers, talking about how it's just to say they talked. That was Kasey , the front desk person. Left with a feeling that these billing tactics are low-key abusive, and you know what? My insurance crew confirmed my suspicions. Turns out, the pre-authorization they sent was for a "cavity treatment " when all I wanted was a basic regular cleaning. Like, seriously? Decided not get any services from this office , I went to another dental office a month later. Guess what ? NO cavity found! and I was able to get a dental cleaning right away during the visit with no questions asked, and no need for deep cleaning, no sales on dental implant. Bottom line, shady moves, targeting peeps for that moolah. Smh." read more

I've been a very long-term patient here, and my kids grew up going to this dentist under its former name Powell and Tiller. My wife and I also went here. We kept going here for years and years after they were no longer in the network because we liked it. I was happy here for a long time. They were a bit pushy about the most expensive options of care, but I believed were pushing because they believed it was the best option, I believed it was motivated by genuinely caring about the patient. For decades they seemed kind and caring, gentle and worried about pain and the best care. This was despite a long series of repeated care patterns, the crown on a tooth that was not bothering me, but they "were very concerned about", which then made that tooth painful, which then required a root canal to deal with the pain, that was not there before the crown, repeated 3 or 4 times. then that root canal caused my tooth to break down and need a $10k implant... Even then I still thought they were just trying to do their best to take care of my family and myself. Short Version: I no longer believe this. They got weird about money and convinced me, they were just farming me on expensive out-of-network care to line their own pockets. Long version: When One partner dentist retired, and then the front office staff all got replaced, something changed. Like I said they'd always been pushy about crowns and similar expensive repairs. but lately, it's shifted in a lot of small ways that add up to the feeling that you are being farmed for profit. The second that expensive procedure is done, a new one is immediately a new top priority. Literally, the next visit. I was going to spend a lot of work ($10k+), some when in one of the early procedures they spent less than I'd paid by about $900+, I left it on the balance, as I'd be in for more appointments on lots of other steps. I decided to go with an in-network dentist for the same implant ($3k instead of $10k for the same work), and since I'd been feeling farmed for cash instead of the best care for a while I decided to run a test with that balance, to see if my suspicions were correct. Before I did so, my wife and youngest son went for a regular appointment, and even though I had a $900 balance they made her pay cash out of pocket. I went back in on my next 3-month cleaning and asked about it, they said my balance had been mostly spent and allocated to cover outstanding bills, and that the $900 balance was all of a sudden, an error, it was only $300. I still had about $300 balance, in her own words. I asked to withdraw that and they said, there were outstanding bills, that MIGHT get returned from insurance. I asked or that $130, and they got all cagey and refused to let me withdraw even the supposedly not "pre-spent" balance again because there were outstanding bills, even though they were less than the total. Suddenly that money was allocated to be held on to just in case those bills were more expensive than anticipated (note they still made my wife pay out of pocket, on the very same bills they were holding my balance for) And after that, they got really weird and would not refund any of the money that was my positive balance. Just refusing and not saying anything. At this point, I lost my 25+ year presumption that they were acting in good faith, and motivated by seeking the best care. Clearly the motivation was -only- the money and not anything else. I asked for an explanation and all they would give me was a list of all the charges they'd used to spend that money as if I was somehow going to be wowed by a printout that detailed -HOW- they'd taken my money, and never addressed the fact they'd taken it, and refused to refund even the little bit that they told me wasn't "pre spent" by bills that were waiting on the insurance payout. it got worse and weirder after that. I talked to the Hygienist about it, telling her I was planning to leave. Instead of speaking to the dentist I was sent back to the same (kind of rude) lady I'd already spoken to before, and I was again presented with the list again, as if that solved the issue, and frankly, the woman was so unpleasant about it when I tried to express my concerns that I just walked out in the middle of the conversation because she was making me too angry to continue to be polite. The very best face you can put on things is a $600 error that they never told me about till I dug into things and then refused to pay the positive balance. We currently seeking a new in-network regular dentist. I spoke with Dr. T and she felt awful and tried to fix things, but once you lose the presupposition of good faith, it's pretty hard to recover. I understand she is no longer in charge of the business and is effectively just an employee now, so she can't fix things. I guess the problem is with new Management and or their business practices. They did (finally) agree to cut me a check for my remaining positive balance. read more

Love, love, love this dental office!! Literally, everyone is super sweet and patient, and trust me, I am a high maintenance patient. Dental fears, high blood pressure, can't lie flat, and anxiety, and they handled it all with kindness and left me with my dignity, unlike other places I've been. Dr. Diemer is very thorough and knowledgeable and funny, and I literally have nothing negative to say about anyone from the front desk, billing, hygienist, assistant, and dentist! I already have an update to my last review 2 months ago! If I could give P&T Dental a higher rating, I would. So I had a recent cleaning and check up that went horribly since I had missed a cleaning and rescheduling took longer since everyone was coming back. My gums were not doing too hot and I needed scaling. I thought my dental habits were pretty good, I flossed 2x a day. I was feeling pretty dejected over my gum pockets and I was also still determined to not chalk things up to genetics and fatalism. So I started asking more questions and for more recommendations. The main reason for this update is more reflecting on Powell & Tiller's willingness to indulge in my need for information to let me help myself. I try to be specific with what I do and with my questions. I really appreciate this. After my cleaning, I got advice on holding and angling my toothbrush. After the scaling, I started using my WaterPik since I already had one at home and being told that it was easy to look up videos on proper usage was something I needed to hear just because it didn't occur to me even though it seems obvious. At my yearly check up, they always print out my gum pocket chart when I ask. Amanda had taught me how to read the chart when I first started going there regularly in 2018. I usually take it to see areas where I need to work on. The advice from these most recent visits helped clear up a lot of inflammation and mild bleeding in places I've had trouble with for years and I have 4 years of data to back that up with. I went in for a dental consultation on June 23. The office assistant was very nice and greeted me, then took me to a back office to meet Dr. Tiller. She came into the room a few minutes later and greeted me. We discussed my options for a permanent replacement tooth, along with setting up a cleaning and further consultation. Afterwards, Dr Tiller proceed with m x-rays and further discussion. I was very impressed with both her and the staff, and am glad I was told about her. I went back on June 26 for further consultation with the oral surgeon about the upcoming implant surgery and a cleaning. Both went exceptionally well, and I will definitely be back for regular visits. read more

WARNING!!! To anybody who has dental insurance...this dental office is NOT In Network with any dental insurance companies. You will pay truly insane Out of Network fees at whatever they want to charge..such as $840 in fees just to undergo a routine sedation for a dental implant procedure and they will charge you thousands of dollars separately each for an implant and sinus lift procedure. I highly advise all potential patients to avoid Powell and Tiller at all costs and find a much cheaper and exceptional "In Network" Dental office where you will literally save thousands of dollars and never have to worry about being ripped off and misled for any dental procedures. Without any heads up or review, My credit card was auto-charged an insane total of over $4,700+ out of pocket costs just for an implant procedure (Crown not even included) due to the front-desk staff not wanting to properly do their jobs and provide accurate pre-treatment estimates after repeated multiple requests from my end. In 2021, I was recommended by Dr. Tiller to get an implant which my insurance did not cover back then due to the missing tooth clause. However I was told by my insurance that starting in January 2022, the missing tooth clause would be removed and that and my implant would be covered at 80%. I informed the billing coordinators multiple times that my insurance would cover the implants, however they continued to show me treatment plans that only showed the estimates with the missing tooth clause in effect for my implants even after multiple attempts asking for updates. I was told by their coordinator, Cindy that she would contact my insurance and call me back the next day which never happened. However, I never expect the following issues to arise. For the implant, I was told that I would need to be sedated, but the unusual part is that I was also told that a sinus lift might or might not be necessary until right before being sedated. Upon awakening after the surgery. I was wheel-chaired out of the office to my car and was immediately charged the $4,700 to my credit card on file used for regular cleanings without anyone ever contacting me/reviewing the charges with me before I left. Again, this office charges an insane amount for a sinus lift and sedation SEPARATELY from the implant procedure itself. It took a frustrating amount of attempts to finally speak with Dr. Tiller about these significant issues I experienced, but to my shock was told that Cindy "just assumed" I would be okay with the charges from an incorrect pre-estimate plan and that is why I was charged the full amount to my credit card without any review. For a procedure that was covered 80% by my insurance, I never would have imagined I would have to pay almost 70% of the total charges out of pocket. There are so many affordable and exceptional "IN NETWORK" dentists and I highly recommend everyone make those your only dental providers and 100% avoid Powell and Tiller. read more

I've been coming here for around 5+ years and love it! I have seen Powell and Tiller both. They are equally wonderful. I hadn't seen a dentist in maybe 8 years and was forced to go due to an abscessed wisdom tooth. They took care of me from that first day! I was so embarrassed, but Powell and Kelly put me at ease. They never made me feel bad about the entire situation and gave only support and solutions. I also had never been to a dentist that had tv's when you get your teeth cleaned. Lol it really helps pass the time. The front desk staff has always been very helpful and kind. I was always surprised when they recognized me after only coming in every few months. In healthcare and dentistry sometimes I feel like a number, but never here. They really make you feel like family. read more

Dr. Diemer and Dr. Tiller are exceptional dentists. I cannot recommend them enough. Starting with the first visit, you are welcomed into a consult room which takes the fear away from being in the dental chair. At that point you are greeted personally by the doctor to talk about your questions and concerns and gets feel for the personality of each doctor. From there, they invite you to do a mini tour of the office where you are then directed into a treatment room. They will then take x-rays and start a scan that shows your very in depth details about your oral health. They do not cut corners! The professionalism and personable feeling that you get from this office is just absolutely outstanding. They are not in network but they do everything they can to help you through the insurance process. You will NOT be disappointed. read more

I absolutely love this dental office. The receptionists are so kind, warm, and welcoming. Everyone in the office is extremely hands on and knowledgeable about their specific job. Any questions you may have they are quick to answer and they never make you feel like just another patient. You are absolutely treated like an individual and You always have full attention and respect from this team and it is truly the best. Every cleaning I have gotten has been beautiful and when I finished my treatment plan every one was happy for me. They have blankets, tvs, water, coffee, they even give you new electric toothbrush heads. I have a million good things to say about this place and it is definitely worth the visit. read more

Decent dentists, polite staff, but the waits are ridiculous. Even if my appointment starts at the right time, they usually leave me sitting in the chair for ten or fifteen minutes. Today was the last straw for me. I showed up a couple of minutes early, checked in, and then waited for half an hour. Bottom line: if you have nothing important to do, and want to hang out in a dentist lobby, they have wifi. Otherwise, look for someone who can run a business like they respect your time. There are other highly-rated dentists within a couple miles. read more

Bad experience got even worse. The crown on an implant I had done in Spain broke. I decided to have De. Ana Tiller fix it. To start with, she had a hard time finding the right tool. Then, the lab she used had a hard time making a crown without a crack. This took months. By then, the gums had grown over, her surgeon did not come to fix that, so did that surgery herself (not great). Okay, over $2,000 later the little stub of a crown is there. Less than 5 years later, the crown breaks again. She won't honor any guarantee. So I guess I'm going back to Madrid to have a new crown put there; they guarantee their work for 10 years and the flight and hotel will be less than what she charges for a shoddy replacement crown here. read more

I've been going to Powell & Tiller for my dental care needs for roughly the last 4 years and I am honestly only short of words in properly describing the incredible experience it is going everytime. From checking in to getting seated & ready for your regular cleanings, it is always a joy visiting these folks, and who doesn't love a new toothbrush and floss for the road. I went to Dr. Powell after not having any regular dental appointments for over 10 years and I was convinced they were going to tell me all of my teeth were rotting and that I needed dentures. Perhaps I was being a BIT overdramatic :). I expressed my nervousness to Dr. Powell and she was so comforting. She said "All that matters is that you're here now" with a smile that diminished any of my self-consciousness. I had to get some major scaling and fillings done and every experience I've had there was great. Plus, they have TV's for you to watch while you're in the chair so you can distract yourself from sitting there with someone's hands in your mouth. I would highly recommend both Dr. Powell and Dr. Tiller, especially if you're nervous about going to the dentist. Even the billing specialist is friendly and helpful. 5 stars! read more

I'm now a lifetime fan of Drs. Powell & Tiller thanks to the recommendations from co-workers and felllow yelpers. They have officially made trips to the dentist as pleasant as possible, and that's no small task. The waiting room is impressive with a children's area, wi-fi, industrial Keurig machine (single serving coffee maker), soothing music, lighting and even aromatherapy. The staff had learned my name after one visit, and greets everyone through the door with a hearty welcome. The individual seats also get the soft lighting and aroma treatment, and most of them face a large external window for natural light. Their equipment is brand new, and they use an LCD on a telescoping arm to give you access to your electronic charts, x-rays and photos during consultation. Plus, it's hooked to Dish Network so you can watch television during long procedures - including wireless headphones. The T.V. would be nice for waits as well, but I've never had to wait at all - so far they've been amazingly efficient and timely. Finally, since it's an individual practice they have a very caring and thorough practice manager who will sit with you to discuss treatment plans - including the best strategies for minimizing payment. They even offered to provide my complete examination for free when it appeared my insurance wouldn't cover it. I can't say enough good about this place, but I'll end it with this: my last visit was for a root canal. They were very considerate during the whole process, and for the most part I just laid there and watched Law & Order. I even started to doze off during the root canal. I'll repeat: I started to DOZE OFF during a ROOT CANAL. Those of you who are a little afraid of the dentist should absolutely come check them out. The sweetest dentists in the world, you might just even fall asleep while they are cleaning your teeth. (I did.) My dentist laughed when I nodded off and took it as a compliment that I was so relaxed. They also did a great job on a filling I had to get redone. I know they aren't exactly located in Central Austin, but I haven't found another dentist I can trust my regular hygiene examinations with. You know those dentists that remind you of car mechanics? Truly, there can't possibly be something wrong with my teeth every time I get them cleaned. Powell & Tiller take a different philosophy: honesty. Dr. Powell has been my dentist for the past year and a half and I've had nothing but enjoyable experiences from the actual procedures to the way payments are handled. Dr. Powell and my hygienist, Atesha, are both very empathetic to the apprehension brought on by trips to the dentist's office. They take the time to explain everything in an easy-to-understand yet detailed manner and welcome any questions. The waiting room is nicely furnished with the usual selection of magazines, a play area for children, and free gourmet coffee. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes. There are adjustable overhead TVs with wireless headsets at every station and a full lineup of DirectTV channels or you can choose to forego that entertainment and chat with whoever's attending to you. If you need further care your options are explained in depth with both pros and cons of each situation. When you checkout, 3 very nice ladies give you an estimate for how much your insurance will cover and then give you your bill for the rest. The only downside (and hence 4 stars instead of 5) is that they're not in- network for any PPO insurer. Despite that, I've chosen them as my preferred dental providers and have even gotten my wife to go to them as well. I think the service is well worth the price even though my insurance doesn't cover as much as they would somewhere else. read more

I am now taking my four year old daughter to Dr Tiller. She has no fears and actually enjoys going to the dentist to which I tribute this to the staff being so patient, caring and wonderful. Heck, the first visit my daughter was like "Cool! I am getting attention." Meanwhile I was in the corner all distraught because my little girl was getting poked at by doctors. I was traveling through and needed to be seen immediately. I had a filing crumble, and could not wait till getting home in a few weeks. They were able to make time to see me on such short notice. On top of that, I'm not the most fond of dental visits. They were great at helping cultivate a calm environment, stopping whenever I needed, and speaking positive words. This was the most pleasant dentist visit I've ever had. I strongly consider flying from California to Austin next time I need work done. ;) read more

This was the first time in my life that not a hygienist but a dentist has cleaned my teeth. Dr. Powell explained that she likes to clean all her new patients' teeth their first time there because that gives her a better feel for their teeth. Her hygienists take over for the following appointments. It was also the first time I was handed a remote control and watched TV while someone was cleaning my teeth. I had an all around good experience - very little waiting and lots of attention. Although they are not in-network PPO providers for any insurance company, they worked everything out with my insurance just fine and the copay was the same as it would have been if I went to any of my in-network providers. The only bad thing is that they book up fast, I had to wait a few weeks for my appointment. Also, I feel like I have to call a few times before anyone answers. But then again, I have a tendency to call around lunch time when no one is there. read more

Dr Powell has been my dentist for over 10 years. Before I found her I went to several other dentists around town and never felt the trust I feel when working with Dr. Powell. I have even continued to use her after I moved to the other side of town and we all know how bad Austin traffic is. Since I have had children she has started seeing them and she does a great job of walking them through the appointment and making them feel safe and comfortable. Hands down best dental office I have ever been to! Not that anyone enjoys the dentist, but I really don't mind going now! And that says A LOT coming from someone with a terrible gag reflex who would wait years to go in for just a cleaning #1, because I hated it and #2, because I would bribe myself to the dentist with a new Coach bag everytime and that started getting expensive. I started going to Dr. Powell when I decided to get Invisalign. I was there weekly or monthly for over a year during my Invisalign treatment and everyone at the office is great.
