Bland and flavourless. Pad Thai made with ketchup. Mango salad was ok, rest needed some sort of flavouring, Pad Thai House in Calgary is so much better. I do not recommend the one in Cochrane. read more

Had a craving for some Thai food and was recommended Chiang Rai in Cochrane. Ordered: spring rolls, Drunken noodles with chicken and Spicy noodles with Beef. The food was hot and delicious. The food at Chiang Rai was just ok. We ordered the Red Curry with steamed tofu (tofu was not an option on the menu, but the chef was kind enough to make it.) My DH ordered the stir fry veggies with chicken. We also added coconut rice to the meal since we'd never tried it before. My Red Curry was tasty and had lots of veggies and just enough spiciness. My only complaint was that the curry sauce was so thin and runny that it was like water, when curry sauce is usually a little bit thicker and clings to the rice better. My husband's stir-fry veggies with chicken was okay too, but one thing I really liked was the flavor of the chicken. It seems like Canadian meat products have a lot more flavor than our meat products in the United States, which taste increasingly bland to me. We also thought the coconut rice was a nice change, although it's a bit sweeter than we had expected. Besides the red curry sauce being so thin, the only other complaint I had was that, when the waitress delivered the food to the table, she left one of her long black hairs on my dinner plate. The Chiang Rai Thai restaurant is hidden in a strip mall close to the CIBC. They offer a wide variety of dishes including two lunch specials for $10. The decoration is somewhere in between diner and high end restaurant: on one hand they have real cloth napkins and wine glasses on the table, but on the other hand they have covered the table cloth with glass for quick and easy cleaning. The service is excellent, staff is always friendly and the quality is consistent. The restaurant is usually busy and it is always a surprise to us how many take-out orders they have on top. Oh. My. Goodness. Thank the food Gods, I've finally found pad thai to rival that from the streets of Koh San Road in Bangkok! I have been on the lookout for decent Thai food for ages, and today was my lucky day! Chang Rai is an average looking restaurant from the outside, and exactly how you would expect it to look on the inside. Even its menu is exactly what you would expect. But what these guys have figured out is how to make a fabulous dish of pad thai, complete with chicken, tofu, veggies and bean sprouts on top! Wow! Impressed! I had still been on the hunt for some amazing Thai food within the Calgary area. I just may have found "the place" today after 2 years of looking! Totally worth the drive out to Cochrane. (Thanks Yelpers!) We arrived upon the restaurant's dinner time opening at 4pm on a Sat. They close at 2pm after lunch and then reopen. Loved having the place to ourselves a for a bit and service was great! The restaurant is nothing fancy, very unpretentious and clean. The cool day called for a spicy red curry dish for me. Authentic tasting and delicious it was! I recommend it with a side of coconut rice, worth the $2 extra over the jasmine rice although I am sure this place would rock that too. Hubby had his fave Panang curry dish and he devoured it. He was especially pleased with the chicken (all white meat, tender) in the dish and how much of it there was. Decent portion and I have no prob paying $12.99 for a well executed curry dish! The care and selection of the Thai ingredients was evident (bamboo, basil etc) Cannot wait to come back to try the Pad Thai! read more

The food here was fantastic. The fiance and I tried the red curry and pad thai. Only thing is that when they ask you if you want coconut rice or basmati rice with your curry, the coconut rice is an extra $3.99. We were pleasantly surprised when we received the bill, but not gonna lie, it was pretty good. read more

Thai food here is not bad... I wouldn't say is the best I have ever tried but is not the worse... The pad Thai could have been better... I think that they have a big room for improvement in the quality of their food... The service was slower than what I would have preferred; but not terrible... In summary, this place is just ok... Great green chicken curry and the coconut rice is so scrumptious. I always do take-out and order only took 10 minutes. My hubbie had the basil beef and thought it was excellent. I prefer this food to any Chinese. Veggies are crisp and sauces so flavourful. read more

Had a pretty bad experience. I went on just a few days after new years, on a saturday(iirc), and it was pretty slow. Ordered massaman curry. the taste was so mild that i could not believe it. It was at the point that if i was to eat an extremely spicy pepper, and i had a choice of either water or that curry to dilute the taste of the pepper, I'd pick the curry hands down. Sounds like they are having some problems in the kitchen? I overheard the table behind us talk about their dish with the waitress. They said that their dish was too spicy, and that they order it all the time so they could tell it was different. Service was a little awkward. They never came to ask us how our meal was, although they stopped by every other table (at the busiest part of our night there were MAYBE 4 tables), so I guess our feedback in particular wasn't important. The place settings iirc had a spoon, knife, and fork. First my rice for my curry came out, and it came with another spoon. Then my curry came out, and I got yet another spoon. then my roti came out and i got another fork. It was pretty excessive, and I felt like I was drowning in cutlery. That said, the service wasn't as bad as it could have been, and maybe the kitchen was dealing with some major staff changes. But the lack of quality control before a completed dish reaches the customer made me pretty disappointed, and I won't be back for a very long time. Terrible service and food. Had the Hell beef dish at Lunch and it was completely chewy, after stuffing the 4th inedible piece in to my overflowing napkin, I then asked for a knife to try and chew smaller pieces. Still no good. So, I push aside. The waitress came by and i told her it wasn't edible. She gave me a nasty look, then started poking the meat with the fork like I was lying. She then said, this is AAA beef from Costco and walked off. Never offered an apology, or alternative dish. I went to pay and there was no offer of any discount, for the uneaten meal. Absolutely love Chang Rai, one of my favorites in Cochrane. Their lunch special is so good, and priced right. I'm a regular customer here and have never been disappointed. An excellent post-hike meal. We stopped in here after a long day of hiking and left very satisfied. The red curry with coconut rice was delicious and the Pad Tai was absolutely incredible. The restaurant is very clean and the service was great. The food was quick but tasted fresh. A great meal if you're looking for lots of flavour and variety. read more
