I was googling restaurants in Cochrane when Thai Onzon came up and at first I was a bit skeptical because historically towns don't always have the most authentic Asian cuisine. However, all the reviews were stellar so decided to give it a try. Its a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options. I am neither a vegetarian or vegan and still enjoyed my food very much! I love how the restaurant is actually a cozy house, and that its run by two sisters. I liked how they put a little bit of background about their restaurant and themselves in the menu. The menu was expansive, and included a good variety of different appetizers, noodle/rice dishes, curries, etc. My friend and I both got Thai Iced Tea to drink ($4.50) and it was soooo good! I ordered the pad see ew and she got the red curry. It was loaded with a variety of veggies and both dishes were flavoured well. One thing to note is that their prices are very reasonable ($12 a dish). I want to come back and try some other dishes! read more

I've been trying to try Thai Onzon for quite some time but have often found them closed when I'm in town (they aren't open Sun/Mon or between lunch and dinner and the sisters that run this place seem to go on month long vacations) Finally we got there while they were open and I was delighted. They cater to vegans and gluten free folks here which made being a vegetarians easy as pie. I found the lunch menu quite reasonable. The food was delicious (we had rose dumplings and I had #35 but I'm blanking on the name) The portions weren't huge but I was satisfied and the presentation is adorable with lots of attention to the little details. With asian fair I often get an upset stomach but I handled my meal just time. For dessert I had chocolate banana cake and hubs had banana fritters. The fritters were great but as a gluten eating person I have had many better cakes. That's the only thing I consider a miss - the cake. But, it might be just the treat a celiac needs so I won't be too harsh here. Will definitely plan to return to try out some more menu items... read more

We headed to this restaurant for dinner with our close friends who are vegetarian. I love meat and any place they suggest has been AMAZING!! I left full and satisfied without the need for meat. The location is a quaint home (owners live upstairs) and the restaurant is quite small with a small patio. At the time we visited there was a large party of 20+ so we were lucky to score a table for 4 in the corner of the restaurant. The blue tea was awesome. Odd smell and at first I was confused by the BRIGHT blue colour but it tasted great and good for you! Great antioxidants! We ordered a bunch of curries and steamed rice and every dish was full of flavour and cooked with love. Love the dishes that they are all served on. The phad thai I was a bit skeptical about as I normally order with chicken and shrimp but their vegetarian version was great! Loved that it wasn't fluorescent red as some places use red food colouring to attain the colour. Now the desserts were to die for ... of course the staple deep friend bananas - always popular and my fav! We also ordered the Thai Crepe with condensed milk - OMG! We ordered double the order because they were so good!! We will definitely be back for a visit - especially for that dessert & phad thai! It's also good to note that they are Thai Gluten-Free, Vegetarian, Lacto-Ovo vegetarian and Vegan ! read more

The food here is AMAZING! I had heard it was, so we decided to head out and meet the parents for dinner. I know one member of our little group was skeptical, as everything is vegetarian, so how on earth could it be delicious & filling?!?! They won him over though! We ordered a variety of dishes and had them all served family style, so we could all try a little of everything. We were not disappointed by anything. It all tasted so fresh and the dishes were colourful as well. A special shout out to the fried rice - absolutely delicious (& I normally skip the fried rice most places, so I am glad I didn't.) I cannot wait to go back and continue to work our way through the menu. Each dish that went past our table intrigued us - so much to try! Make a reservation. The restaurant is small and busy. They are smart to keep the size manageable. They do appear to have takeout as well, so that is always an option. The staff are fantastic and attentive. The ambiance is warm & cozy! This is by far the best Thai place in town! (Calgary included!) We often drive out just for dinner there.... but make resos! it gets busy! My boyfriend was very hesitant to try it as he is a meat kind of man, but even he thought it was amazing. Try their tea.... its blue and delicious! The best Thai food around the Calgary/surrounding areas! Everything is made with love and as healthy as can be. Give it a try and I promise this will not disappoint. The owner even takes the time to hand carve vegetables and fruit into beautiful flowers, roses and other designs. Not only is the food amazing but the service is genuine. The owners themselves serve up their food and take the time to talk with their customers. I highly recommend asking for the Tom Yum soup and to share in a big bowl as opposed to a smaller one :) They will gladly accommodate! read more

The colourful and flavourful organic dishes made fresh from scratch - all oil-free and whole plant-based left our guests oohing over every mouthful. I'm amazed at the good reviews. It must have been a really off night when I went there. I'm not a vegetarian, but I've enjoyed many vegetarian offerings elsewhere. However everything we all ordered here came with tofu in it (no mention of this on the menu). I hate the vile stuff, and there's no good reason to load up on plant estrogens. There was no sign of the egg listed in the menu description, nor the sauce either. Our orders were taken partly by the bus boy and partly by a waitress. Food came sporadically, slowly, and two of our orders were just wrong. And we were overcharged as well. The price of the tea was ridiculous. Some of the presentation was lovely, and others seemed to be enjoying their meals (probably all tofu fanatics). But my dinner was bland and unsatisfying, so I'll not be going back. read more

Great, cozy, fully vegetarian Thai restaurant! Who would have thought that Cochrane, out of all the places, would have such a good restaurant in its repertoire? Great appetizers, mains and desserts. I have tried several dishes in this restaurant and have yet to find one that disappoints me. I highly recommend trying the appetizer sampler to taste the variety of dishes they prepare here. The ambiance is very peaceful and they have a great selection of Thai dishes (pad thai and the like) which are some of the best in the surroundings of Calgary. Food might sometimes take some time to come to the table but I understand everything is made to order. The place does get busy and you might have to wait for a table (it is a mom and pop style restaurant), but it is worth trying. Make sure you check their schedule, it would be shame to drive all the way to Cochrane to find that they are closed. read more

Discovered this place by accident but what a surprise! It's hard to find a reasonably priced Thai restaurant that is also authentic, mostly low price Thai places have dishes that are too sweet and too sour at the same time, in trying to make up for either average cooking or less than average ingredients. This place however is very close to authentic and makes everything fresh. Tom Yum soup is excellent although comes in a small portion, green curry is excellent and possibly the most authentic tasting dish they have, other dishes are also good. Sticky rice and mango is a must to finish off. Prices are reasonable and the dining hall is bright and clean. So are the bathrooms which is very important for me personally. I had no issues with the service, very friendly staff. Will definitely recommend this to Thai food lovers and Vegetarians. read more

The food is solid - believe me, I know Thai food. But obviously thai food involves meat and fish, so you are missing out on most of the cuisine. But there is NO restaurant I have been to in my 30 years who shows love and affection for customers. I celebrated my mother's 65th birthday in a private lunch. Oh my god did the 2 sisters show 100% dedication to the event with warm Thai smiles that matches their culture. All the food was fresh, made from scratch and flavorful. We decided to hit up a Cochrane Thai restaurant with some friends while in town. The thought of a vegetarian and gluten-free option intrigued us. The atmosphere was nice and seemed to be quite the hip place for Cochrane. Unfortunately I found the food bland and the different dishes we ordered seemed so similar. To be honest I was disappointed that a vegetarian Thai place would have such limited variety in each dishes' vegetables. read more

Okay spoiler alert there is absolutely no meat at this restautrant. However this place is crazy good. Two sisters from Thailand run this brand new restaurant. It is vegetarian with gluten free and vegan menus as well. They strive to have everything organic and fresh. No junk outta a can here. Curries, noodles, veggies, all your favorites if you've been to Thailand. I have a few times and this place delivers. Reservations are highly recommended as this place can fill up fast. I'm not a big fan of vegan food, but I must admit this place is great! All the food was very flavourful and I really liked it... I can go back there even when I'm not vegan and I prefer having meat on my meals ... I definitely recommend this place, even for not vegan people! read more

4 friends and I went for dinner at Thai Onzen last night after reading all the hype about how great the food was. Unfortunately we must have gone on an off night (can't believe there are so many 5-star reviews!) because the food was just awful and the service wasn't much better. We started with spring rolls and rose shaped dumplings, which were fine but not fabulous. For our entrees, we ordered a few curries and a few noodle dishes. Unfortunately even though they were described as being very different (and even had spicy ratings of 0 through 3 chilies) they all tasted exactly the same and looked very similar, to the point that the kitchen brought us an incorrect dish, insisted it was the dish we wanted after we protested, wouldn't take it back, and then made huge drama about how we had gotten a "free dish" (see above re: bad service). The owner/chef made more drama later about the "free dish" too. You know there's a problem when the yellow curry and the peanut sauce curry taste the same, and the 0-chili and 3-chili noodle dishes are indistinguishable! The dishes looked like they were composed of one part "bag of sliced veggies" and one unit of "thai sauce from a jar". I can do better at home... Service-wise, our waitress was generally clueless, slow on bringing out the drinks, and as I said couldn't even identify which dish was which. We also got a couple of the curries before we got our rice, so we had the pleasure of watching our curries cool off until the rice was brought out. Speaking of which, the coconut rice turned out to be regular rice with a tablespoon of coconut milk on top - for a $1 uplift over the price of regular rice, this must be one of the main ways this restaurant is making money! My fiance and I were told great things about a thai restaurant in Cochrane and we assumed this was the place. I'm hoping that our friends were referring to another thai gem in this town. I've had A LOT of thai food in my time and this was far from tasty. I'm not a vegetarian but always order vegetarian thai food and this place was a miss for me on the veggie level as well. I had green curry and my partner had pad thai - which are staple dishes in thai food. The pad thai was lacking in flavour, the noodles took over the plate and there was little else added. It was bland unfortunately which was a real let down. The green curry was too salty and did not have any spice or flavour. The vegetables were cooked to perfection but it was overwhelmingly carrots and broccoli. I always feel a bit disappointed when the cheapest vegetables are the majority of the dish. Would have like cauliflower, green beans and more red peppers and bamboo. There was little to no citrus flavour from the dish, and this is a curry that is supposed to be full of lemongrass. I ordered it with tofu and they forgot to put in the tofu. The staff was friendly but they didn't check on us very often and so I was finished my meal by the time I could tell her that they had forgotten the tofu. She said sorry and brought out a small side of tofu that was boiled texture, not what I am used to from other restaurants either. We will not be going back unfortunately. I'm surprised that so many people rave about it... bland, flavourless and unpleasant textures is my opinion unfortunately. read more
