I came in this past Saturday to have my hair done for my sister's wedding. I saw Jenn, and she helped me decide on an updo. We were able to refer to pictures to make sure we were on the same page. It was super hot and humid outside, and we agreed that my hair needed to be off my neck and to stay that way. This is usually a challenge as I have long hair. Jenn did such an amazing job. My hair looked lovely. I received so many compliments at the wedding. Jenn was even able to incorporate my purple steaks into a combination romantic and funky. The owner of the salon, Cheryl, reached out to me and offered to fix my hair for free. I took her up on it, and I'm glad I did! I felt kind of awkward, but she was so kind, and she took the time to thoroughly discuss what methods the previous stylist had used. She also said she'd speak with her and go over technique. My hair looks MUCH better after Cheryl touched it up. Unfortunately, it was pretty damaged in some places from the first cut, so a lot of it will just have to grow out before it can be fixed. Due to Cheryl's follow-up, I will definitely go back to the salon for another cut with her as my stylist. I'm hoping I can add another star at that point! read more

I live in Chicago and didn't have a car when I was planning my wedding. Lucky for me, the 66 bus ran right to the doorstep of this fabulous salon. Ashley, who runs the front desk, is one of the most helpful people I have ever met. Although I changed my final counts as late as the week of the wedding, she would always get back to me within the hour with updated pricing and scheduling. She made everything so easy! Our stylists were also wonderful. Cheryl, who owns the salon, did my bridal hair. I had a difficult look I was trying to recreate, as I had a juliet-cap veil and wanted vintage curls in my decidedly difficult-to-curl hair. She helped me come up with an idea and executed it perfectly! I was a student and couldn't afford a trial run-through, and yet my hair came out better than I ever could have imagined the day of! Megan is also a makeup genius. I usually don't wear much makeup and she created a look that was glamorous without being overwhelming for me. I also got to sip on tea and relax in their charming space while she worked her magic. My girls all loved their hair and makeup as well, and we didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it! I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt and say that when it's good it's good. But, when it's bad .....it's really really bad. When I walked in, I was really in love with the atmosphere and friendly greetings. I scheduled an appointment with Tamika as I have natural african american hair and she is supposedly the person to see. Unfortunately she had to cancel, but I had a series of interviews coming up and I desperately needed a hair cut. I also decided I wanted to try the keratin treatment since I like having straight hair, but not the harshness of relaxers. Anyway, I was told there would be another stylist there with experience dealing with natural hair, so I kept my appointment.....first mistake. I really cannot understand this, but once I got there I was told that they did not have the keratin with a high enough strength to straighten my hair. Basically, they didn't have African American strength (or "chocolate" strength as she called it) keratin. I made my appointment over a week in advance and had explained my hair type. I find it pretty unreasonable that no one in that time thought to check and make sure they were ready to straighten my hair. I was talked into doing the medium strength instead. I had driven an hour to get to the salon and had a messed up afro that needed some kind of treatment so I figured I'd give it a go......mistake number 2. I sat there for hours being pulled prodded and gawked at just to leave looking worse than I did when I got there. My hair was NOT straight at all when I left and then I was told I could not even have it trimmed because that would disrupt the effects of the treatment. On top of that, she had the salon assistant who clearly did not have experience doing african american hair work on blow drying my hair for at least half an hour. This poor girl might as well have been wafting my head with a paper fan, she had no idea what she was supposed to do. First of all, it is completely possible to straighten my hair with just a blowdryer and flat iron. Does it take a little more effort? Yes. But it can be done and I believe the stylist, Jalessa, knew that and knew that the way she had me leave was not good enough for the $300 I ended up paying. Blaming it on the treatment to cover up for the poor job she had done was low, despite her giving me some good tips on how tips on how to take care of my own hair. I didn't go outside any more than necessary for the next 3 days because I was TOO embarrassed and I definitely didn't go back. I saw another stylist at another salon who blowdryed and straightened my hair BONE STRAIGHT in under an hour. That was after she told me that I had wasted my money on the keratin treatment because not only did it not work, but it hadn't been applied properly to work in the first place. Needless to say, I'm not going back and will stick to the 2nd stylist. (I've reviewed them as well so check my profile if you're interested) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ On a side note, I felt equally sorry for the lady getting her hair cut next to me that day. I don't know the name of her stylist, but she kept trying to tell him that she didn't think her cut was even and she kept messing with it in the mirror to get it how she wanted it, but he just insisted that HE liked it and thought it looked perfect so she just gave up and agreed with him. I could see on her face that she would just be going home to mess with it until she actually did like it. Even if it did look nice (which it did), I think the stylists here are way too pushy and not as in tune with what the customer is looking for/expecting. You shouldn't give up on a haircut until you know you've done ALL that you can do to have them walking out feeling like they are beautiful. read more

As an African American female with natural hair, it is important to me to find someone who specializes in working with my hair texutre. I hightly recommend Tamikca for anyone of any ethnicity that has curly hair. She uses sulfate free products, does excellent haircuts, and actively stays educated through seminars, reading, and training about natural/curly hair care. I travel from Milwaukee just to see her. This was the first time I went to a salon and was really nervous about it. 1. It was a place I've never been to before. 2. I was getting 10+ inches cut off. However, because of my fellow Yelpers I was more at ease picking this salon to cut my hair. I wanted to donate my hair and Chicago Avenue Salon gives a complimentary haircut for those who donate to Locks of Love, which is wonderful because a haircut and style here is around $60ish. Anywho, I called on a Thursday to set up an appointment for Saturday morning and drove past the place a few times because the sign isn't that large. I came in at 9am on a Saturday morning so there was plenty of parking; they also gave me quarters to put in the meter. My appointment was with Lauren and she did a marvelous job I would have to say. Again, I was extremely nervous, but she picked a good length and I ended up getting 11 inches cut off. OH, and if you want to donate your hair, I suggest you do what Lauren did and make two pigtails so it's not as uneven when it gets cut off. A friend of mine got hers chopped off at some other place had hers put into one ponytail and the hair stylist had to take a lot more off because it was really uneven. That showed me that Lauren knew what she was doing so I trusted her the rest of the time.. lol They had great service even though my haircut was complimentary and weren't pushy at all at trying to get me to purchase hair products. My husband's originally from Chicago and we were back in the Midwest visiting family when I thought it'd be a great time for a trim. After much OCD research (which is my nature), I decided that Tamicka would be the one. I chose Tamicka because I have very thick, super coily/curly Black natural hair and I wanted a round, elongated bob shape. Let me tell you, after four years of no relaxer, this woman is the best I've been to! She's been natural for two years, is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable, and is no-nonsense. She will not try to sell you anything you don't need for your hair and her pro-natural hair attitude is so refreshing. Not to mention she is gorgeous, sweet, intelligent and passionate about what she's doing - and you can tell! I thought she should take much more off my hair, but she really only took about 1/4"-1/2" AND she was perfectly happy cutting it in its natural, coily state. Her estimate was spot-on. It came out looking healthy and with the perfect shape! There aren't many more positive things I can say about Tamicka - she is a goddess, period. When I head back to the Midwest for our family visits, I WILL be seeking her out. If you want someone who knows natural hair intimately and will treat it with respect, go to Tamicka. read more

I had purchased a Gilt City offer for this place, and now I really wish I hadn't. I made an appointment for a pretty simple haircut. My style is pretty basic (slightly inverted bob with long layers and side swept bangs), but requires a decently skilled stylist to make it work. I did not get a decently skilled stylist at this place. I have NEVER had such an awful haircut in my entire life. My bangs literally look like a zig zag across the ends. When she finished cutting it the stylist even said "Oh I guess I could have inverted this a little more..." and stared at the back of my head with this utterly confused look on her face. There is absolutely no inverted look to my hair anymore. She didn't thin it out either so now I have triangle-shaped hair, and its impossible to make look cute. I hate, hate, HATE it. In addition to my awful cut, I wasn't impressed by the place. The layout is weird and seems like an awful use of the space. The decor is cute enough, but I wasn't impressed with any of the other staff there either. They were constantly chatting with each other across several chairs and with the hostess, so basically there was a lot of yelling and gossiping going between the staff instead of with their clients. I will never go back, and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Oh, I almost forgot... I had an appointment the same time as another woman did. So I've wanted to cut my very long hair for awhile now, but I'm been a bit chicken to actually do it. When I found out Chicago Ave Salon gave a free haircut and style when you donate to Locks of Love...I had no reason to wait any longer. I got an appointment for 2 hours after I called, which was amazing. Street parking was very easy. As soon as I walked in, everyone was super nice and the girl at the front asked me if I was excited about cutting my hair....no, I was freaked out. She and Lauren, my stylist, were so nice about putting me at ease and making me feel comfortable with the transition. Lauren suggested I only donate 10-11 inches so that my hair wasn't crazy short. I was relieved to find out I wouldn't have to give my entire head of hair away. Lauren made sure I was totally ready before she made the cut, and then it was done! Lauren took a lot of care with the cut, and it looks awesome. During the blow-dry I was a tad worried that my hair was going to look Mom-ish (I'm only 22!) but after she dried it, she cut in some more layers and made it look a little more edgy...it was perfect. I found the front desk staff charming, and the stylists friendly and welcoming. Krista H did my cut, and she did a FABULOUS job. I showed her the approximate length I was going for, and she helped me determine what works best with my face shape. As mentioned by others, Krista is a stylist who will do multiple ponytails with a Locks of Love cut, to have the best results for your style. She did 2 for me, but has done up to 4 for others depending on the need. Even though LoL is a free cut, there was no pressure to buy product - I asked and picked some up, but only because I wanted to. I love my new style, and have received tons of compliments. After searching on yelp, I decided to try Chicago Ave. Salon since it's walking distance from my apartment and the reviews were pretty good. I wasn't looking for an "experience" in a hair salon. I don't need loud music, louder paint color, bitchy staff and "rock star" hair styles. I just want a good hair cut in a friendly environment. I got an appointment with Sarah, who is a total sweetheart. I'm pretty flexible with my longish, curly hair & told her to do whatever she thought would look good. She freshened up the layers & trimmed the top to give it more volume. Didn't think it would make that big a difference, but it did! She also blew it out better than anyone ever has. My hair looked naturally straight and super soft. The staff is super nice & after the first-visit discount my cut was $38. I'll definitely be back to get color soon. read more

I'm a college student, so when it came time to chop off all of my locks, I needed to find somewhere rather inexpensive. I decided I wanted to donate my hair to locks of love and found out on Yelp that Chicago Avenue Salon did Locks of Love haircuts for absolutely FREE! I thought it was too good to be true, but after calling and talking to a really sweet girl on the phone I was extremely excited about my new haircut! The trip there was really easy (I was coming from Lincoln Park), I took a train and a bus. The bus dropped me off less than a minute walk from the salon. When I got there, the place was a little small, but very cute. It definitely wasn't overbearing and looked so homely. I was greeted right away and was offered a beverage and they took my coat for me. I had an appointment with Lauren and she was ready as soon as I had my paperwork done. We got started right away and she was just as excited as I was about donating my hair. She did an awesome job on my haircut and made the whole process very easy for me. She was so sweet and cute! Because I was getting a free haircut, I was expecting to get a lot of pressure to buy products and or other things from the salon, but not at all! Actually, I want to go back to get a product that she used in my hair because its so great. Overall, Chicago Avenue Salon made my whole experience wonderful. I just got a cut and color by Beth and it is one of the best so far! With a toddler and another baby on the way, I have about 3 minutes for a daily beauty routine. Beth gave me a cut that looks great without any fuss! I am so happy with how it turned out, and I don't look like a mom with no time for herself! Chicago ave. was recommended by a friend, after floating around to a few less than satisfactory places i decided to give it a try. Now i drop in to see Elgin every 4-5 weeks. Not only is she incredibly friendly and easy to talk to (nice when trying to avoid those super awkward hour long appointments, i know some like to zone out and read, whatever.... not me, i need stimulus), but she knows her way around some scissors (and trimmers etc. etc.). For a men's cut the tab is usually $30, 25% off for the first appt. and for referrals. I was desperate to find a salon closer to home that was not shy when it comes to natural African American hair. I'm pleased to say that Jaleesa did a great job with my first visit and I will definitely return. She was able to improvise and created such a cute flat twist design; I received so many compliments throughout the day that I had to call the salon back and leave a message about it. I give the salon 4 stars as I thought they were a bit pricey, $90 for flat twist and a small bun...? But maybe it was that amount as she did a conditioning treatment... In any case, I was so happy to have my hair done, it looked nice, and it didn't take all day (I was out in under 2.5 hrs, but we talked for a while before she started and she created a look as I was unprepared). I was so annoyed by Christina's message below that I signed up for an account on yelp. Basically her stance on the salon was that it was great, but "Loyalty, eh, means nothing." I love the ladies at Chicago Ave Salon. I have recommended clients who are now loyal and they do give me the appreciation one would expect. If they were to give everyone in the neighborhood a discount it would be out of control. If you are a starving student then act like one and go to Supercuts and yelp them for giving you a horrible cut. Alternatively, if you like your locks to look lovely then spend some cash. read more

I love it here! I walked in first just to ask about their services. I was promptly greeted by the friendly woman behind the counter, who was happy to answer my questions about their salon, including special offers they had. I was optimistic that when it was time to get my hair cut this was the place to come. So I walked in one day when I was ready to get my hair done, and I was fit in right away. A lovely girl named Lauren was my stylist for the day. Lauren was superb! I had a stylist for a long time back home and it's been hard to find someone I love in the city. I found her, and it's Lauren! She listened to exactly what I wanted, we had a great chat while she cut my hair, I did a little networking for my own job with her. When I was finished with my hair cut, I was very happy with it. And I'm a hard person to please, especially when I want something specific. The second time I went in for just a trim, Lauren wasn't available, and that was okay, because Krista was just as excellent! She made me just as comfortable and I was just as happy with my cut when she was finished! I absolutely love everything about Chicago Avenue Salon! Every staff member is beyond friendly, and you feel immediately at ease when you get there. The look and feel of the salon is quirky and comfortable, and the service is exceptional. I've been getting my hair cut and highlighted by Sarah for about 10 months now, and she is a big reason why I continue to return. She has great hair (which is always a good sign in a stylist), she's friendly and amazingly knowledgeable about getting and keeping your hair as healthy as possible. She works with you to identify what color and cut is best for your face shape and skin tone, and I couldn't be happier with my results. An added bonus is the hair glaze they use after your shampoo and conditioner. It makes my hair amazingly silky soft - a must-get if you go there! Their product line is great too - they have a smoothing serum that I swear by, and their deep conditioners are well worth the investment. I'm a hair idiot. When my stylist (Jaleesa) asked me what I wanted done, I'm fairly certain I mumbled, pulled out a sheet of paper with pictures of my prior cuts, and said "mmfdjkfnhdthis." I require a no-nonsense, wash and go kind of cut, but don't want to look slovenly...and she understood. Jaleesa delivered, for sure. I walked out of there with a nice do, and I waited to write this review until after showering and seeing how my hair looked without product or a fancy blow dry. I'm still the kind of person who thinks that $50+ is too much for a fairly simple haircut, so when I go back, I'll be grimacing just a bit when I checkout. But, while those things are nice, they really wouldn't make me give a 5 star review. The haircut itself and the person who did it are the 2 main factors. Actually, I shouldn't say hair cut - that's insulting. It's a hair STYLE. And a good one at that. The layers, the way it falls, everything. And, it passed the test of still looking good when it puffed up from all the rain and humidity this morning. Then there's Cheryl. I don't know about you, but I love chatting with the person who cuts my hair and getting to know them, letting them get to know me, because I want to like the person who cuts my hair. I hate it when the conversation is like pulling teeth and uncomfortable. But - on the other end of the spectrum, there is such a thing as too much conversation. Cheryl was the best balance - friendly, sweet and listens to your hair concerns. I can't wait to go back. Oh, and then there's the price. I would go back even if the place was more expensive, but $55 for a great haircut by the salon owner? Really? I'll be RUNNING back. The colder it gets, the less I want to travel across the city just to get a haircut. Don't get me wrong, I'll travel for the girl or guy that gives me the perfect cut every time, but this time, I had to take a chance. Honestly, split ends + cold weather + no time meant there was no way a girl would travel to Lakeview when she could just walk across the street (no stalkers, please) to try a hair salon that Yelpers adore. Oh, and the Yelp discount (25% off for new customers on Tues-Thurs) certainly didn't hurt either. So, that's what I did. I called one day and marched in the next, hoping to get a decent haircut and expecting to go to my regular place once it got warm. Little did I know, I found someone who was better than my girl (who knew that could exist?)! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the owner's dog and my future hair stylist, Lauren, asking if I wanted anything to drink. For a Thursday night, that place was PACKED. She offered to take my coat, let me go to the restroom, settle in, and took me over for a quick consultation. Having cutting hair for 7 years, I definitely trusted her opinion. While some stylists may suggest to cut off my long locks or to make a big change, she told me she loved exactly how my hair was. Since I had an issue with split ends though, she thought that she'd change up the layers so they would be less prevalent (who knew?). She washed my hair, then began cutting away. Lauren was very quick and fun to talk to. She really listened to my qualms and made suggestions to fit with my face shape and hair texture--I think this is something that some stylists don't always mention. She understood that my hair is impossible to curl (while other stylists never believed) and offered to give it a try one time just to see if we could find any solutions. She also told me about their free bang trims, which, while many salons offer, it's not always the easiest to go back just to get a bang trim. Afterwards, she gave me her card and let me know that I would get another 25% off if I referred someone... ...and that's when I got my boyfriend to go the next week. Score! He ended up going to Lauren as well with his crazy curly hair looking to get it cut before seeing his parents the next day. She (who just so happens to specialize in curly hair) dealt with his hair and I must say, he looks handsome (not that he wasn't already). So, I got my 25% off and as did he. Other quick pluses are that they use mostly all-natural hair products (which is honestly all I want in my hair) and they have punch cards!
