I've gone back and forth on whether to write this review, but if it helps spare someone else the stress, here it is: I came into Robert Jeffrey for a PuraLuxe frizz treatment approximately 2.5 weeks before my wedding as my regular salon does not offer this service and I heard good about it. I contacted Robert Jeffrey twice to confirm there would be no adverse effects given the timing. I was told my hair might get slightly lighter, which I was comfortable with, as I regularly get highlights and had a toner appointment scheduled with my usual stylist shortly thereafter. Otherwise, they all raved about the treatment. My appointment itself was fine, but once my hair was dried and straightened, it was immediately clear my hair was SIGNIFICANTLY lighter and was an ugly orange-ish red color - very different from my normal brown. I mentioned this at the salon but was largely dismissed in favor of focusing on how smooth and straight my hair looked. After washing my hair for the first time, it smelled HORRIBLE- absolutely rancid and worse when wet (reddit describes it as dead rats and sewage which honestly is pretty spot on). My now husband was even disgusted by it. The smell didn't fade despite repeated washing. When I contacted the salon, I was told they had never heard of this issue and suggested it could be due to needing extra product for my long hair- which they charged me for... I looked into the odor myself and found it can occur if the product is not fully rinsed prior to drying and straightening. I sent the salon before-and-after photos that clearly showed the color change and was offered a toner. Given my experience at Robert Jeffrey and how close my wedding was, I did not want to go back and instead went to my regular stylist, who followed the PuraLuxe guideline of waiting before performing a clarifying shampoo. She was SHOCKED by my hair. When I eventually spoke with an owner, she seemed bothered and suggested the lightened color was due to the clarifying shampoo (which is ridiculous). I received only a 20% refund, despite spending hundreds of dollars at my regular salon to correct the color and get rid of the smell. Unfortunately, I can't say the product helped my hair at all. It isn't smoother, sleeker, or softer, and at times the front pieces actually feel more brittle. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with the salon, the lack of transparency around potential negative effects, how the situation was handled, and the PuraLuxe product itself. read more

i had a really good experience here the first time with jackie, so i decided that i would definitely return & did so today. i definitely will not be coming back after this past experience. i had an 11:45 appointment & wasn't seen until around 12:25 for a bangs trim. i also arrived over 10 minutes early as one does to respect the time of another so i waited well over 40 minutes to get my bangs trimmed. at some point the receptionist realized i had been waiting over 25 minutes after my appointment time & came over with a very nonchalant apology & said it would only be a few more minutes. i ended up waiting 15 more minutes after that then was honestly about to leave right when she came up & offered me another stylist after telling me she wasn't sure when the stylist i selected would be done (after saying it would only be a few more minutes previously). i really did not want to see someone else, but given i had limited time & had booked this appointment almost two weeks out because that was the only availability they had for a quick bangs trim i hesitantly agreed. i saw katherine instead & while it's not a bad cut it's certainly a lot shorter than i had requested, i asked for them to sit slightly above my eyebrows & they are well above. at the end, i received no other apology & paid full price ($18 to get my bangs trimmed) after waiting as long as i did. as someone who works in hospitality, i felt pretty disregarded, disrespected, & left unhappy. i had a great first experience here but after being treated like that i certainly won't be recommending this place to friends. i understand things run longer & stuff happens, but they were not interested in correcting the issue or even remotely bothered that they had someone waiting that long past their appointment time. definitely disappointing. read more

On Monday afternoon, I scheduled an appointment with Danii at the salon for Wednesday at 2pm online. I have never been to RJ before but found Danii's cuts on her social media and liked the style. Per the salon policy, I provided a CC and agreed to a contract online that I would pay a 50% fee ($75 in this case) if I cancelled my appointment less than 24 hours before. A few hours after I made this appointment, I received a voicemail from Maggie that Danii was double booked (she said was not sure why their system let me do that on the scheduling site) and that I could reschedule for earlier on Wednesday or for Thursday. I called Tuesday and I'm not sure who I spoke to but they assured me my appointment was fine for Wednesday at 2pm. I was called about an hour before my appointment Wednesday that Danii was running late coloring someone's hair and I was asked if I could push it until 6:30 pm; I said sure. 5:30 pm rolls around and I get yet another call asking if I could come in on Thursday because Danii was being held up again doing a color. Of course I said no. I asked to speak to a manager - Amanda - who gave a half-hearted apology "understanding" and being "so sorry" and other platitudes to cover for themselves. I hung up on her mid call which came from my frustration of having a day wasted waiting for this place to get it together. Amanda called back offering me a free haircut "to make it right" and that my free haircut was on my file. It can stay on file forever for all I care because I am extremely disappointed and lost any trust in this brand to ever give me a haircut. I want to start by giving Sadie a shout out for giving me a nice cut. Also by noting their web site says $40 for a men's hair cut. I (a female) was quoted $40 by the receptionist when I called to inquire about a very short cut (above my ears and collar). When I checked out I was charged $60. I emailed the salon and to their credit they called me and apologized and offered to give my $20 back. I asked instead for a credit toward my next cut and they agreed. Then my wife called to make an appointment with Sadie. When she arrived for her appointment she learned Sadie had called out sick. No one bothered to call my wife and ask if she preferred another stylist or wanted to wait for Sadie. She was told another stylist would be cutting her hair. When she was done they told her it would be $57. She told them their web site says $40 for a men's hair cut. They finally agreed to charge her $47. I can't believe how wrong all of this is. You are a business but you are discriminating against women based on nothing. I tried to attach before and after image of my wife's $47 cut that they tried to charge $57 for. This review is based on my second experience at Robert Jeffery Hair Studio in Lakeview. I admit my first haircut there was somewhat decent, so I went back, much to my regret. My second visit I was given a different stylist. Please DO NOT get styled by EVELYNN! When I called for my haircut appointment I asked for a senior stylist, they paired me up with Evelynn, who is not a senior stylist. At my appointment I explained in detail what I wanted in terms of cut and style, I also explained very clearly in detail what I did not want. I asked for a haircut that was no shorter than chin length, but preferably an inch below my chin. I asked for layers just to frame my face (which I had come in with), and I asked that she straighten/flat iron my curly hair after the cut. I told her that I had once been given a haircut which was cut above my chin and I hated it, and I would never go that short. We talked about this and agreed to have the shortest layer be an inch below my chin/mid neck, just above my shoulders. The cutting began, she started in front. I immediately saw how much hair was cut off (about 5-6 inches), and said that is too short. Evelynn reassured me that she would cut no shorter than this length, which was already above my chin level. She said that would be the shortest cut and the layers would be longer around my face. She did not keep her word, in fact she kept going shorter, and in the back went even shorter. My hair ended up at my ear lobe length, above my lips. At one point she asked me if I wanted layers in back as it would be harder for me to flat iron. I said NO. Instead, she gave me short choppy layers in back that revealed the entirety of my neck, and are indeed very difficult to flat iron. I ended up with a very bad bob, super choppy, and unevenly cut. At the end I asked her to cut layers around my face (like we had originally agreed upon), but she admitted that she had cut my hair too short and that it would look funny to go shorter and do layers to frame my face. I was so upset after the cut, I asked Evelynn, did you misunderstand what I wanted, did I say the wrong thing, and she again admitted that she just cut my hair too short. She offered my a free styling because I was upset. She admitted several times that she knew it was not what I had asked for. I went to the front desk on the verge of tears, paid and left a tip and asked for the manager, who was not there. I said how upset I was at the horrible hair cut which was about 3-4 inches shorter than I wanted, and not all what I had asked for. The front desk said to call back later and we could talk. I called back as soon as I got home, after crying for 20 minutes. I asked for my money back, and for the manager again. I received the managers phone number, who I called over the next week about 5x and never got a hold of. Finally a week later, after never getting to speak with the manager, I called the salon and insisted on getting my money back. They did reimburse me, but now 7-8 weeks later, I'm still upset at the worst hair cut I have ever had! I Actually cried for days after this haircut. I will never go back to this awful salon. This review is based on the one experience I had at Robert Jeffery salon in Lakeview, sorry to say it didn't turn out that great. I normally go downtown for my haircuts but decided to go someplace in my neighborhood after seeing them on Salon Apprentice. My hairdresser Christina was a student but said she was almost finished with the program at Aveda. Armed with that information I decided to take a chance and go with her, however the results weren't so good. I explained what I wanted, layer the back (and sides) because a previous hairdresser cut it too short in the front and back and now it was too curly, I even sent her pictures beforehand so we would be on the same page. But I guess in reality we weren't! While under the supervision of one of the owners, Patrick, she (over) layered my hair in the back and on the sides and then flat-ironed it. When it was finished it just looked okay, not exceptional like I'm used to, but I could live with it..kind of. About a week later it wasn't until I washed my hair that I noticed it was really uneven and when it dried was frizzy, plus my hair was sticking out on the right side and unruly. Even with a flatiron I couldn't fix it. But what bothered me the most about the experience at Robert Jeffrey was the way Patrick had supervised her work, or more like supervising her! He was standing right next to her the whole time, so even if she didn't know what she was doing he should've, instead of carrying on this flirtatious back and forth with her! When he was explaining the process (to her and I guess me) he gave the impression he knew what he was talking about..but in the end seemed a little more interested in carrying on this "thing" with his eager young student rather than giving me a proper haircut. So there you have yet! So I immediately contacted my old hairdresser, the one and only "Montserrat" at the NV Salon in Libertyville...who formerly previously worked at both the Sassoon Downtown and Northbrook locations! Although this place (Libertyville) is a good hour and a half from where I live she once again did a bang-up job on my hair and now I have a perfectly layered haircut. Why? Because she concentrated on giving me what I wanted and didn't rely on the expertise of an owner who clearly had other things on his mind!! Moral of the story, go back to your original hairdresser who knows what she's doing and stay away from flirtatious supervisors with short attention spans! read more

Having long curly hair, I'm always hesitant to find new hairstylists. I think she listened to what I wanted and executed it well. She finished the appointment by doing a blowout on my hair since I never do them myself, and I enjoyed the change. The price of a woman's haircut was also very nice! Ok, first, shout out to Mark D., who cuts my hair regularly. He does an amazing job and when I say I want low-maintenance hair, he gives me a cut that actually IS low-maintenance. And he's fun to talk to. Now, this is about my wedding. I booked with Robert Jeffrey because I wanted a calm morning of getting ready, not a rushed one-person stylist team in my cramped hotel room. This was perfect. 3 bridesmaids and myself got our hair done. Mark D., Tim and Brittany did blowouts for the girls. Brittany did my hair. Taylor did all of our makeup. Everyone looked great. I could wax hyperbolic about it all, but I'll spare you. Just know that I thought everyone looked great. My hair was freaking set. While it was soft, it stayed all night with no touch ups. I heart the magicians at Robert Jeffrey Hair Studio. My visits to this salon be it a wax, pedicure, hair cut or just recently keratin treatment are always pleasant, relaxed and I am treated by everyone extremely nicely. The staff at this salon always goes above and beyond with any of my requests and I feel very strong loyalty to this place. So let me tell you about my recent visit: I had problems with a gift card that was not showing any balance on it. Juliana, Raphael and Jessica worked very hard to help me and were my saviors and fixed the problem within few days. Thank you. For the longest time I wanted to get keratin treatment and with Juliana's help I booked an appointment with Ryan for keratatin and cut. I could not be happier with the results. What a big difference, my hair is smooth, shiny looks much healthier and most importantly the frizz is gone. I should have done the keratin treatment long time ago. My cut is also great. Very stylish and complements my face. It was a pleasure meeting Ryan he is a true hair magician but can also make delicious coffee. I left the salon relaxed and very happy. Ryan also pointed out the products that I should use to keep the keratin in my hair longer. I am basing this review on one experience I had at Robert Jeffery, and unfortunately for them, it is probably my last trip. I normally go elsewhere for haircuts but I was running late and I was able to get a cut in at Robert Jeffery within my time frame. When it was my turn I had Jason. He knew I was in a rush, so that might have contributed to his performance; however, that does not mean it should have been as sloppy as it was. He started buzzing my hair before washing it off. When he took the hair apron off me he got a ton of hair onto my pants and down my collar. After the wash he cut it very short (which is what I asked for) but it was very, very, jagged. I later asked a friend who told me the back was just as uneven as the front. Jason never held up a mirror for me to see it. I left a regular 20% tip, but having an uneven hair cut for the price I paid, and leaving itching from hair left all over me was unacceptable. I ended up needing to shower when I got home because there was so much hair stuck everywhere and had to change clothes. I doubt I will go back. read more

I meant to do this a long time ago, so here goes... First couple of times at this salon were good for cut, color and occasional highlights. The last two were really unpleasant. Bad experience #1, it was the middle of winter with temperatures about 5 degrees and I had a slight cold. Not only are the washing stations right by a back door without any protection from wind or cold, but the owner decided to bring in all the supplies at 3pm and kept opening and closing the door with icy winds hitting all of us at the basins. Pneumonia anyone? To add insult to injury, the girl washing my hair dug her fingers in and when I asked her to please not do that, she continued and I had to tell her two more times to please just stop the "massage". She later claimed I "swore" at her - which I would never do...although that might have stopped her pronging my head! It's one thing to pay $8 for a haircut and get shuffled around and thrown in a cooler, it's quite another when your bill is $250 for cut, color & highlights plus tip and you get shuffled around and finished off with the apprentices. Bad Experience #2 and my big question: is it ok to keep me waiting 15 minutes when you finish up your clients, and if I show up 8 minutes late, you won't greet me, are nowhere in sight and give instructions to the front desk to pawn me off to the younger stylists? Way to go Daniel - you sure know how to treat your customers! Unfortunately Daniel lost a client that day as I promptly called Salon 1800 on North Avenue, my old stylist Sofia was miraculously available with a last minute cancellation (God works in mysterious ways). Salon 1800 now has a new fabulous longer lasting hair color and I am extremely pleased (which is the only reason I left in the first place.) Thankfully I don't have to deal with Daniel's split personality anymore! read more

I am writing this review for no other reason than to sing the praises of the almighty hair guru, my stylist: Charlie. Why do I have Charlie on this pedestal you ask? Oh, how I could carry on ad nauseum! But I don't want to bore you to death. Let me just highlight the important stuff: 1. He's a creative genius! I've always let him do whatever he wants to my hair and every time I leave the salon, people rave about my hair. 2. He's dedicated to what he does. It takes him over an hour to snip my tresses, if not longer, which is awesome. His attention to detail ensures that you'll never have to deal with the perils of a lopsided haircut. (Not a fun ordeal, trust me.) 3. His candor. He'll tell you straight up if your 'do looks crustastic. 4. He's damn entertaining! If I'm getting my thick mane o' hair colored as well, you can tack an extra 2 hours onto my time in the salon. Never a bore when he's around, plenty of good stories. The staff are all very friendly and they are on top of their reminder calls. They use the best products and they have a bevy of hair and beauty products to peruse if your stylist is running behind. I've been going to Robert Jeffrey for 2 years (with a few visits to Zea in between) and I'm always happy with my hair when I leave the salon. Whether I am wearing my hair dark or blonde with highlights, Daniel does a fantastic job with my color. If you are ever just looking for a wash and blow-out, go to his assistant Mark, he'll give you a head massage that will leave you wanting more! Note: Make sure you have cash for the tip because you can't put it on your card! While at work one night, my hair was looking awful. I decided I absolutely needed a haircut, and a friend recommended Robert Jeffrey. I work until 7:30 most nights, but they were able to squeeze me in after work. The stylist I made the appointment with (I chose randomly) wasn't there, so they put me with Jason. He and I talked about what I wanted my hair to look like, and how he would fix the mistakes that past stylists made with my haircut. In a pinch, I made an appointment for a cut, color and highlight with Kassy. We discussed covering my roots, and brightening up my highlights for a nice summer look. After coming here for the past 3 years, I've had great haircuts. Sarah who was my usual stylist moved to Spain, so I was scared that I wouldn't find a new stylist who I loved as much as her... Well let me tell you guys something, Kelly sure did give me something to rave about! I love her! She really did a great job the first time I went to her, and she did a great job today. I had a bad experience with them last March because of the reception didn't take down my reservation correctly, and it basically left me empty handed. Also, they ended up calling me an idiot to my face. Well I left, and vowed to never return. It wasn't until my roommate told me come back, because every time she saw Kelly for her cut/color she told me Kelly was sad I haven't returned, and would love to see me again. First off, I love the fact that everyone on here has a different stylist and yet everyone loves them. I was a bit nervous when I first walked in here. In college I would drive 4 hours to get my haircut done by the same woman who had done it growing up. Well I live in Chicago now and flying to Dallas every time I need a haircut just isn't practical. I got a recommendation to come here from a friend of a friend. She said her stylist Daniel had curly hair so he would know how to cut it. I was still skeptical because I have super curly hair and well you never know. I went in super scared, but she was right Daniel did have super curly hair and did know how to cut my super curly hair. He did an amazing job and I was thrilled. Since he'd done so well the first time, I decided it was time to really cut my hair. I got one bad haircut 10 years ago and have been scared for life. With Daniel, I decided to cut off 12" for Locks of Love. Daniel made this haircut, the best one I've ever had. If you have curly hair and you're looking for a stylist, go to Daniel. He's amazing. Plus he's from Texas as well. Updated 11/15/07: Well I'm lazy and don't get my hair cut all that often but when I do I go to Daniel. I decided it was time to cut my hair again so I called and made the appointment. My hair had grown and we cut off 8" this time to donate. I wasn't scared this time and it was a lot of fun. I went to Robert Jeffrey for a hair cut based on the reviews here. Overall, I'm happy. I have fairly difficult hair, it's very thick and kind of weird. The top part is very curly but the bottom is almost completely straight. It had gotten way too long and out of control. Hair emergency! Sara is fabulous. She actually listened to me, which is rare for some reason. She took extra time thinning out the bottom and making sure the layers kind of conceal the straight bits. I've never had a stylist pay so much attention to the little details, like trimming up individual curls to make them bounce more :) She works quickly but without rushing, which is perfect. I went during the evening and it was pretty busy but that's probably because it's a great salon. I think their pricing is very fair. You get what you pay for but it's not obnoxious and overpriced. I did splurge on some products but like I said, hair emergency. For the most part, everyone seems friendly, at least the other stylists. I can't say that I found the receptionists to be especially friendly. Actually, they were pretty short with me but whatever, I'll be back to see Sara. She's not afraid of my crazy hair. Also - they can't put the tip on your card, so make sure to get cash BEFORE you go. D'oh. I'd give Robert Jeffrey 4.5 stars if I could, instead of 4. ETA: Yes, Sara is gone (so sad) but! After waking up one morning and realizing that 20% of my hair was comprised of split ends, I begrudgingly made an appointment for a trim. Haircuts have been anxiety inducing ever since the disastrous graduated bob incident of '07. I was fortunate enough to meet Ryan at RJ. He was fun to talk to, really sweet, and knows how to cut hair. He's one of the few hairdressers I've been to that has really listened to what I wanted, and suggested some alternatives so that I could keep my length. Been coming to RJ's for 7 years. Used to see Sara. She moved to Spain. Found Samantha though. She is awesome. Always listens and helps nail down exactly what you want. She is fun to talk to and has awesome freaking hair always. She is around all kinds of crazy hours too. Plus, I get it all for $25. Brilliant! read more

I agree with the previous user (min). I had a haircut with Jean a few days ago, and I'm still sad about it. She did not listen to a word I said either. She cut my hair entirely too short after I had stated several times I did not want it to be any shorter than shoulder length when dry. I would not have minded it that much, had it not been for the fact the haircut had no style, and now I'm forced to wear my hair back until my hair regrows. :( To make matters worse, I had to wait 40min because Jean was running late doing another girl's hair. I was also charged more than I was quoted on the phone just like the previous user. The place is clean, and this rating is based only on my experience with Jean. I would definitely not go back, in an area with so many salons, I'm sure I can find better. read more

I went to Robert Jeffrey Hair Studio for a few months. I have a short style, so I tend to get my hair cut every six weeks or so. The salon is lovely, and I received good cuts there. However, I wasn't so dazzled that I wasn't willing to try another salon when my stylist canceled my last appointment because she had a schedule conflict that, in my opinion, should not have occurred. Therefore, I chose to visit some of the other salons in Chicago. There are certainly plenty of salons and stylists out there. Surely, one of them will honor my appointments. read more
