I'm gonna go ahead and put it out there, when compared to the other big three sports in town, playoff hockey is the most exciting game to see live in Chicago, there's just something about it. I've been to the Bullies, Sox and Cubs playoff games, all very exciting in their own right, but watching a Blackhawk hockey game at the UC during playoffs trumps all imo. I'm not a dyed in the wool die hard (these fans are here showing their support, though, in droves), but do enjoy going to a few games a year...it had actually been about two years since last seeing a Blackhawk game at the UC, mostly b/c they haven't been v good of late. Now that 'dollar' Bill Wirtz is out of the picture, the Blackhawks team and organization has taken on a whole new appeal, look and feel. Good. Winning. Times. read more

Could the Blackhawks have gotten any lower than they are? Growing up in the 80's during the Savard, Secord, Larmer era, I was a huge Hawks fan. My cousins and I went to a playoff game against Edmonton SRO! Its sad, after they traded Jeremy Roenick I vowed to never return to a game and I haven't been since 1995, nor do I have a desire to return. The Blackhawks used to have the best fan base, not just in hockey, but in all of sports. Too bad all the old fans, including myself, don't go to games anymore. When I was a kid I used to dream of one day having money to buy season tickets. Now that I'm an adult I couldn't think of a better way to piss away money. I actually have a hard time shelling out money for a game here and there. Don't get me wrong, I still love hockey! If I lived in another city I'm pretty sure I would have season tickets. I started attending Blackhawks games regularly 5 or 6 years ago, when they used to offer student seats in the 300-level for $8. I'm not actually a Blackhawks fan (at the risk of invalidating my entire review, I may as well cop to being a Red Wings fan), but I love hockey and doing things that cost less than ten dollars, so it was great to sit in a mostly empty United Center and watch the Hawks play against the actual hockey teams that would visit from time to time. There were never lines anywhere, there was plenty of space to spread out, and parking was a breeze. Last year, the team built excitement by making several moves to modernize their operation, such as televising games and playing actual competitive, professional-level ice hockey, so they did away with the $8 student tickets, and forced an economy minded hockey fan like myself to become a season ticket holder. While I miss the days of being able to go to a Hawks game with a bunch of people on a whim, I will say that the impassioned capacity crowds and vastly improved team make for a much more exciting hockey experience. Unfortunately, much like the cheap day-of-game tickets, all of the other things I loved about the bad old days of Blackhawks hockey are no more. Concession and bathroom lines are ridiculously long between periods, but that's not such a big deal, because aside from the $9.50 Nachos Grande (only available in section 324, but worth the hike), the concessions at the UC leave a lot to be desired (to say nothing of the bathrooms). During the game, the views are great from pretty much anywyhere, but I seem to be seated in the "large, incontinent men" section, judging from the number of people who enter and exit my row in a given period. Parking is similarly inconvenient now, but I work down Madison and live down Damen, so the CTA is a great option to get to and from the game for me. Overall, I think the return of hockey to Chicago is a great thing, and I can't wait to take in a playoff game at the UC (even if it never seems to get quite as loud as I remember the Chicago Stadium being, especially during the National Anthem). And if you're a Hawks fan, the long lines and crowded facilities are a small price to pay to see your team competitive agan. read more

Okay I totally take back the last review. The Hawks have offered some the most exciting hockey this city has seen in decades. As a hockey fan, I appreciated that the team has elevated it's level of play. As a Leafs fan, I'm pissed. Thank you for handing over that Stanley Cup drought to us. Now we're the championship doormats of the NHL. A big shout out to Rocky Wirtz. Thanks for turning over the years of crap ownership and actually take care of the people who support the team... the fans. It's good to see the younger kids start to develop a love for the hometown hockey team. That's what happens when you actually broadcast the home games on TV. My first NHL game. Opening night of the 2014-15 season. First off my hats off to the organization for not only hosting a young man with Down's Syndrome, but to you for hosting the active duty Sailor and what I believe to be a WWII veteran for the National Anthem. Then, the anthem. I shed tears each and every time it is done with love and spirit, and my tears FLOWED during this one. (Hawks won 6-2 BTW) Jim McMahon at the halftime show was a nice touch, and unexpected, plus the kids hockey teams and their skating contest was icing on the cake. read more

4 stars for the ambiance at the United Center! I haven't been to a Blackhawks game in years..........but last night I went to catch the Hawks vs The Blues! If you haven't been to a game before, you have to check it out! It's awesome! The crowd is great, the sound system is great.....the singing of the national anthem.......chilling! We had great seats with a great view of the rink! The Hawks won.....6-1 I love how they have added Tommy Hawk,the mascot to walk the stands and fire "pucks" into the crowd! and the Ice girls..........holy cripe! They are a sight to see! Skating around in skirts and sexy tops, scooping up the ice shavings..........they are a big hit! Its a great time to go to a Blackhawks game.......and maybe with me being there last night and them winning........that could be the push they need to make the playoffs this year!!! read more

Solid 3.95 stars... they should be more dominating this year though I'm being picky, they have won the Cup twice in the past 5 years isn't too shabby ;) Always an exciting team to watch; fast, skillful, and Hossa continually amazes me. this guy can play for another 5 years, so, so strong. no wonder they call him a bull. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the legroom and short lines in the upper deck the last few years, I certainly can't complain about the fact that the Blackhawks are actually a professional hockey team now. Just two short years ago, the Hawks were announcing an attendance of 12,000 at games there where couldn't have been more than 5,000 or 6,000 people in attendance. Now every game is a sellout and the attendance claims of 22,000+ are actually legit. In addition, all 82 games are actually on television. That's right, a mere 10 or 20 years after every other professional sports franchise in North America, the Hawks are finally airing every single game on television. I am new to Chicagoland by way of the northwest (go Canucks!) so I haven't had to witness firsthand the debacle that has been Blackhawks hockey of the past decade. I did attend 3 games (all Hawk wins) last season (07-08) and felt this was an exciting young team with a ton of potential. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are great cornerstones to build a franchise around and I predict this is the year they finally do make the playoffs. The United Center is a nice arena but kind of cavernous so if you go for upper level seats don't forget the binoculars. DO get a margarita at the Cuervo bar by the main entrance on Madison, those ladies make 'em strong and tasty! Go Hawks! read more

Confession: I didn't know anything about Hockey that I didn't learn from "The Mighty Ducks" until college. Say what you will as I cringe and cover my head. Call me a noob, a fairweather fan, and make numerous Emilio Estevez jokes. Ok, glad we got that over with. I got into hockey in college when I learned A) how to ice skate and B) that hockey is the greatest sport ever for heckling. I used to go to Illini hockey games with beer in my pocket. Those were the days. But here in Chicago, hockey was so unreliable. I couldn't watch games on TV and the Hawks barely got any coverage in the paper. They were like the red-headed step child of Chicago sports! Ah, but then came Rocky, Joel Q., and this team and everything changed so quickly for the better. Games on TV, playoff runs...and, in my opinion, the MOST important thing about being a team people can get behind, having some characters and comeraderie on the team. This team has chemistry and a personality, and that makes me love them. I can't watch Niklas Hjalmarsson's IKEA "One Goal" commercial or hear the clip on Eric & Kathy of Adam Burish claiming Patrick Kane looks like a little kid in jammies in his hockey gear without grinning ear to ear. Then, of course, there's the actual HOCKEY. I have given up on getting to sleep early on nights there's a game on and Gio's & the Rail have gotten tons of my hard earned cash spent on the beer & wings that earn me the priveledge of watching hockey there since I don't have Comcast. This is some good hockey, kids! It'll get your blood pumping and make you holler at your TV (or in my case, the bar's TV). As long as they keep it so I can follow it (a.k.a. being broadcast on TV), I will follow it, no matter the "weather". Plus, at least Kane, Toewes, and Keith are going to stick around awhile it seems which is nice. Then, the kicker is going to the games. There's something magical about bouncing around and singing that sweet little "Da da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-DA-da-da" song when they score. My one goal: to go to as many games as my pathetic income allows. GO HAWKS! read more

How can you not love the Mighty Blackhawks...Is it thier fault that WIrtz has run the team, stadium and fans into the ground. Yes it sucks that the only way to catch the "cold steel on ice" is to buy a new cable package or to shell out big $$$ to sit in crappy seats all by yourself because no one else wants to endorse the WIrtz family. When did it become so comercial and a sell out. I dont' think there was a spot on the boards without a sales pitch. Two zambonis know with rides for the special people. The shoot out in between periods is so comercialized. And whats with the little bud ice chickies? What happened to the HOCKEY? I mean every stoppage these little ice babies come out and scoop up the slush at the goalie box. I mean come on...Then the first row Ice seats have personalize waiter/waitress service. Why not go to Trotters before or after the came and let me enjoy my damn hockey. Where are the good ole days of Chicago Blackhawks hockey... I started my son on hockey/skating lessons. Figured it would be nice to take him to the UC to see the Haaks..but I guess we will have to become wolves fans and only catch replays or quick blerbs on the news. WHAT A SHAME :((( read more
