Great staff. I had researched cats on line and knew the one I wanted to meet. The staff were great, meet went well and the adoption process was easy. The huge problem was my cat was starving. When I looked at the records this small cat lost 20% of her body weight in about 3 months. When I got her home and fed her the same food she couldn't keep it down. If I continued with feeding her that food, and I added a good quality canned food, same issue, she wouldn't have last 6 weeks. Luckily a friend gave me a bag of food which I tried. 3 months later she is healthy, great weight and happy. I know they are a huge number of animals to watch but even their vets commented on how skinny she was and how she was losing weight. There is some lack. read more

Have been trying to adopt a surrender. We've talked to several people about this and each one promised to call back. We know the person that surrendered him and this is where he took him. First we were told he had been neutered and it would be a couple of days. They knew we were going to take the dog! Called today, got the run-around, put in hold and then disconnected. Called back and was told the dog was "transferred" but they would not divulge where he was taken. We were told a manager would call back ... didn't happen. Sent an e-mail to Darlene, the president, again no response. How sad. I used to donate a lot of money to this shelter, but stopped because of poor practices. I'll send my money to Felines and Canines. They genuinely care about the animals. Please don't take your dogs there! read more

I truly appreciate the mission of The Anti-Cruelty Society and have had many positive experiences visiting the cats and dogs. It's clear that the organization is making a difference in the lives of countless animals, and I admire that deeply. That said, I feel compelled to share concerns about hygiene and sanitation practices. The hand sanitizer dispensers are almost always empty, even though visitors frequently interact with the animals. At other shelters, hand sanitizing before handling animals is required -- a simple but crucial step to protect both the animals and people from illness. I strongly believe this should be mandatory here as well. Additionally, I've noticed that the cleaning tools, especially the mops used for accidents, are in very poor condition and not properly maintained. It's concerning to see some volunteers using them without much attention to cleanliness. I say this with appreciation for the work you do, but I encourage you to seriously revisit and improve your hygiene protocols. read more

Such a great rescue, we've been browsing dogs for a bit. First we were looking for a companion dog for our dog. Unfortunately our puppy passed away of old age. But we came here and they had a great Amazon promotion where adoption fees are waived. Attendees got a voucher. Free! Now that's a great value. But the quality of the staff and services are great. They offer dogs, cat, and small animals for foster and adoption. They also have an associated medical facilities that house behavioral training facilities and for medical procedures. Staff mentioned that they house up to 400 dogs upstairs and I think there maybe 30 kennels in the visiting area after the animals are evaluated upstairs they head to the kennel in front for adoption. . I moved over to River North a few months ago and was so excited to see the Anti Cruelty Society right down the block from me. I used to volunteer at the Animal Society in Oak Park which plug for them they are amazing amazing people there. But either way used to volunteer in high school and got the idea I'd do it again. As a result, I ended up getting a cat. My first ever pet of my own. The review: Unfortunately my baby was in the shelter for 3 months when they took him in for an URI and some other issues. They gave me his medical info but they didn't explain it to me. Even though I asked a lot of questions and told them this was my first cat. I've since found out it's likely my cat has herpes, however not confirmed by them. Herpes for cats is incredibly easy to transfer from my reading. I've had my cat around other cats unknowing that he should probably be in insolation for the sake of the other cats health. Incredible negligence. I've since called them back to try and see if they will test him to determine if he is in fact positive, and what I need to do as the human to care for a special cat like this so that he's able to live a long and healthy life. Brianna was incredibly rude. Brianna basically told me she would hang up on me because she didn't like my tone. As I told Mary, the original woman I spoke with, to me this is my health, or a child's health. He's a living breathing being that is in my care and this is very serious to me. So when Brianna did not like that I asked if she could answer my questions as a vet.....When you act negligent of the health of animals in your care, not to mention that my cat was with other cats in the shelter that possibly could also have been infected or have been who infected him. Final note- Dr Emily did end up calling me and she was very kind and helpful. It's because of my experience with Brianna I am marking this down a few stars. MY FOSTER CAT WAS EUTHANIZED FOR SITUATIONAL BITE INCIDENTS*** * If you experienced your adopt or foster dogs/ cats were forced to euthanize by the Anti-Cruelty Society Chicago and those who left reviews previously, please reach out to me mtanaka3@g.ucla.edu I do not want any other fosters and foster animals to go through what my foster cat and I experienced. * If you are currently a foster member, please be aware that their practice of euthanasia is very common. One of the directors confirmed that they euthanize foster cats at least every month for behavioral issues and if a bite is level over 3, they euthanize more than 50% of foster cats. Details * My foster cat Dirty Dan was euthanized because of "public concern policy." He was the most friendly cat I have ever met and should have never be euthanized. His biting incidents occurred only two times: one was a level 2 bite to a technician during an X-ray before I started fostering him and the second time was at my apartment when he was tangled up with a cable cord under my bed and I tried to remove a cord from his body. Both occasions were situational and he was in uncomfortable situations. Also, the second incident happened just three days after he had amputation on his leg due to his septic joint and was neutered. * I was told to bring the cat back to the shelter for a 10 day quarantine. Just 2 days after he was back in the shelter, he was decided to euthanize because of his aggressive behavior that would cause "danger to a public" even thought he was staying clam during his quarantine. He was euthanized just for the two situational biting incidents. I was never told about his slight bite incident at a X-ray before I started fostering him and I was only told he was very affectionate. Concerns * I constantly asked to disclose their euthanasia protocols, public concern policy, and reviews from the vets and behaviorists. They never clarify. *A few sentences on the documentation that explained the reason why he was euthanized contains misinformation - 1. No detail on the incident at my apartment and how it happened due to his defensive action against the cable around his body. 2. Made up the third biting incident that never happened. He just got hyped up but no biting. 3. Exaggerated my injuries saying that happened to both legs and hands while it was only my right leg and right hand. * A different rescue team offered to transfer my foster cat to their shelter but Anti-Cruelty declined. * I requested to adopt him to save him from euthanasia but it was declined due to its "public concern policy." * I was advised that I would receive a phone call before euthanasia taking place but they euthanized my foster cat without notifying me. I visited the shelter directly and asked to one of directors how he is doing and when his euthanasia is scheduled, I was told that he was already euthanized in the morning. * I was terminated my foster responsibility by the vet. She reported the complaint to the foster team just because I took her time and asked too many questions why he was determined to euthanize. read more

God forbid you want to adopt a dog and someone calls you back. I took a dog home for the 7 day home trial. First of all when I went there to visit the dog it was complete chaos. No one knew what to do and everyone was scrambling there were several "employees " (I am not sure who was an actual volunteer and who was an actual employee) I visited with the dog for just a few minutes in this tiny court yard. I decided two days later to come and get the dog and have the 7 day home trial with the hope of adopting. I was told that someone would call me during. More on that later. When I picked up the dog she had raging kennel cough. The vet didn't want to put the dog on meds. I had to beg because she had green snot coming out of her nose. So I had to nurse the dog back from the worst kennel cough with ZERO help from anti-cruelty. I had to be the one that was proactive. NO ONE called me and I had the dog for almost ten days before someone called to ask me how it was going. The person who called me about the adoption have NO IDEA what to say when I would ask simple questions. It has been a terrible experience. This review is about DONATING NEWSPAPERS to the Anti-Cruelty Society. I noticed that my elderly neighbors still get a subscription to the print newspapers at their condo units seven days a week.  I asked one of my neighbors if I could have her newspapers to donate on her behalf to the Anti-Cruelty Society. (Of course after she finished reading them)! She said, "Yes!"  So slowly others are joining the cause to donate newspapers in my building. The Anti-Cruelty Society that uses the newspapers to line the cages for the cats who are in quarantine while waiting to enter the adoption process. I am excited about this and so are my two neighbors now that donate. The staff at the Anti-Cruelty Society is stellar. The Process: 1. Bring your newspapers to the Anti-Cruelty Society and ring the buzzer next to the door.   2. Once you enter the vestibule you leave the newspapers on what looks like an elementary school desk. 3.  Then they are collected by the staff so there is "no contact." FYI-I ask my neighbors to put a note on-top of their stack of newspapers with their words to express their donation.  It let's the Anti-Cruelty Society know that they are being donated on behalf of my neighbors and it makes both parties feel good about the donation. NEWSPAPERS are MUCH NEEDED! I also love the cats that are in the windows waiting for a loving individual or family for a forever home. On my most recent visit-Helena ran right up to me in the window and tried to brush up against my hand against the glass....incredibly adorable and loving! About a year ago my cat, Butch, had passed away. I realized it was time to check into adopting a rescue. ACS has always been an outstanding organization for rescuing and adopting pets. As I was walking around the cat area, this orange paw had reached out to me. I was able to enjoy sometime with Brian in one of the private rooms. He was very calm, cuddly and purring. He felt so comfortable with me, he had rolled onto his back so I was able pet his stomach. Since I was on the fence about adopting, I would think about it. The next day, I had checked the ACS's website and Brian was still there. I had rushed to ACS for him. I had completed the paperwork and was interviewed by one of the staff members, Franky. He was very thorough in the adoption process. I was so lucky that Brian had picked me to be his hooman. I would recommend this place for adoption. read more

I adopted a wonderful cat who was brought to them in July by a Good Samaritan. It's November. I could tell something was wrong. At her 1st vet visit she was found to be loaded with parasites. Now after treatment her coat is softt and shiny and she is no longer bloated from loads of parasites. She suffered unnecessarily a long time. They are now the Pro-Cruelty Society. Came here recently for a work volunteer event and I am so glad I did!!! For most of the time we were making toys for the dogs with old T-shirts that we all brought in. Such a great and easy idea that also saves a lot of money!! Another part included a tour of the building which gives you a view of all the amazing services and the super friendly people that work there. And my absolute favorite part was the time to play with puppies. This time is meant for the puppies to learn to socialize with humans and each other. We were also told to make sure to give them a toy if they start biting you so that they learn that pattern from a young age. I also learned that anybody can come in during the day and offer to walk a dog. This review is regarding negligence in human safety in the adoption center. Today, I came to visit some rats that were available for adoption. The cage with the male rats was labeled, "under rabies observation". I talked to a staff member about this, and she informed me that only one of the rats was under observation. The other one was supposedly safe and able to be interacted with. I was told several times that it was safe to pet the white rat and leave the black rat alone. I pet the white rat for about 5 minutes before he bit me on the finger. He bit hard and deep, and I bled a lot. I left a trail of blood from the small animal room to the bathroom, and no one bothered to clean it up, so my mom had to do it herself. It took the staff about 15 minutes to get me medical care, which only included an ice pack and a band-aid. The only thing I was told was to wash it off and fill out an incident report. The staff member who allowed me to interact with these rats never once asked if I was okay and did not speak to me for the rest of my time there. Only one staff member helped me by getting medical supplies and advising me on further action. I am grateful for them. Not so much for everyone else... I understand they had jobs to do and were most likely embarrassed, but it is very unprofessional to leave a harmed visitor with very little assistance. The reason I came in was to get my rat a friend since he had lost his brother just yesterday. I was already grieving, and this situation only made me feel worse. To be very clear, I have nothing at all against this organization. I am very passionate about animal welfare, and I know they treat their animals with love and respect. As for the human customers, more extensive training should be put in place, especially for volunteers, on medical safety. Please do better in the future. read more

My second dog Cleo was rescued from this spot, and I appreciate what they do. You can see some of the dogs up for adoption by the windows, which is cute, but also sad, if you know what I mean.. overall, I support their cause, although neutering and spaying too early can cause health issues, and well, that's something to consider when rescuing. Luckily I didn't have that issue as my sweet mutt, as she lived a long and happy life without health issues. read more

Got my baby Lily here, she's the sweetest cat and I'm in love with her. The shelter is extremely clean and once you want to adopt the process is fairly easy and costs are fairly low (Lily was $70-80). Also, the staff was super friendly and helpful. Only con I have is the adoption process could be set up better. I saw Lily at 5:30pm and since it was after 5:15 I couldn't adopt till they opened at noon. I arrived exactly at noon and there was another group wanting to adopt the same cat. I put in my application the night prior and basically they said "it's whoever gets to the cage first". Very unprofessional. Thankfully I got to the door first and was able to take her home but you should be able to pay for the cat and hold it at or at least a better process should be in place. Overall, I'm very happy with my new kitty. She's perfect. read more

I have been visiting on and off for some years, of course every time I visit, I donate cash because quite frankly, you can get more of a "high" there petting and visiting these beautiful, yet sadly unwanted, animals than you can gain by using that same money towards any illegal/legal substance lol! Today I brought my family to donate and spend an hour with the dogs and we chilled with "Ghost" a lonely 3 legged dog who was shot but survived! The volunteers are grateful that the dogs get some extra time out in the courtyard. I never felt pressured to adopt, well at least by the staff because if I could I certainly would adopt them all! I love that the windows for the cages face the street so the dogs get natural light and passerby can windowshop for their best friend! Love low cost clinic, but know that when you donate they put your name and donation amount in a mass mailing booklet each year. Not something I would have done had I known at the time. What happened to expectation of privacy. They said they sell the lists to others so others did it, but "others" wouldn't be sending things from ACS. So it's out there forever. read more

They neutered my dog after finding him on the streets WITHOUT bathing him or grooming him at all. They performed a surgery without getting the disgusting germs off first and it got infected. Groomers wouldn't touch him and I couldn't even bathe him for two weeks due to the open wound. They didn't give me all of his vaccine records and I ended up paying 200+ to get him vaccinated AGAIN without knowing he had double the shots. They didn't care for his hernia or tell me about his heart murmur which the vet detected instantly. I love my dog and I'm thankful I could adopt him but the care he got before coming home was negligent at best. I appreciate them for rescuing him off the streets and allowing him to be adopted by me, but I think his care had slipped through the cracks and that wasn't fair to either of us. read more

I recently to make the incredibly hard decision of giving my cat away. Usually this process comes with a lot of harsh judgment, but the staff at this shelter were incredibly kind, empathetic, and understanding along the way. When the day finally came to say my goodbyes, Angelica even gave me the room so I could gather my tears and have my final goodbye. With that being said, the animals here are truly being taken care of by the warmest of hearts. Post surrendering, the staff sent me updates on how she was adapting as well as even pictures. 2 weeks later, my sweet girl found her new family. One of the hardest parts of giving her away was thinking about the possibility of her being there for a while, and I'm seriously impressed with how fast they were able to find a new home for her. Their pets are well fed, cages are clean and they have a ton of workers and employees to look after all pets and keep the place relatively clean for an animal shelter. They feed the animals Science Diet, which isn't the best food but it's very good for an animal shelter! I guess that explains why a dog that's been in the shelter for months can have a healthy shiny coat. Right now, Chicago has a HUGE shelter overcrowding problem and a lot of cats and dogs are being euthanized. Currently there are 300 animals in one of our local shelters and it's been at capacity since July, so even with extra donations tonight is the last night of life for a lot of dogs and cats who just aren't getting homes fast enough. With that being said it surprises me that after 2 1/2 hours of being at the shelter my application for a dog was rejected. I own my own condo, have an excellent pet owner history and live near work so why wouldn't I be a good candidate to adopt the dog of my choice - I have a cat? Wait what? How does having a cat make it difficult for an experienced pet owner to adopt a dog? Their response was that it's a herding dog who's never been around cats before. Okay, 99.9% of the dogs in their shelter cane from a home without cats! Isn't that what training is for? Isn't that what spending time with your pet is for? Whatever the case, I was all bent out of shape over not getting the dog had a few tears in my eyes (yeah I said a few it was I'm serious only like two or three) so I left and decided to never go back. They don't do pet introductions like other shelters nor do they test during intake a dogs ability to be around cats, or small animals, so how would they know? They were polite enough even though I was waiting for so long. I feel like they need to put on the cage no small children, no cats, no small dogs, no homes without fenced yards, no apartments, no whatever their criteria is for each dog. It's not a kind thing to waste someone's time when you know you aren't going to adopt a dog to them for reasons outside of their control. They said they would keep my application on file forever and could get a dog that has been around cats, um no thanks. I decided to take a break from the search probably like hundreds of other Chicagoans who would give an pet a great home but find shelters frustrating. When I read about several shelters being at capacity just one day after being rejected for having a cat, I said to myself that's why they are putting animals down. When reasonable loving people come in give them a chance adopt them out death can't be better than having a loving home. read more

I live in an apartment building that doesn't allow dogs. :( I have been to the Anti-Cruelty Society several times to volunteer and play with he pets. :) On my recent visit I got to meet a 9 year old Shih Tzu mix that I fell in love with. The Anti-Cruelty Society rescues 20,000 animals a year and gives them a home. I come here every now and then to drop off newspapers and some cat food. They are always in need of newspaper and any food/litter you can offer. When I'm out shopping for my cat, I always make sure to buy a little extra just to be able to donate it to them or Paws. I love everything about this shelter. It's fairly new and everything looks well taken care off. The cats have two rooms. The main area where the cats are placed in their respective boarding and another play room where the cats (or whichever lucky cats that get placed in there) can roam around freely. The main area also has three different interactions rooms so you can mingle with the cats. The dogs have their own closed walking/play area, which I feel is extremely safe. The shelter is located in downtown Chicago, and I think it's a lot safer to have the dogs run around in the shelter enclosed area rather than out on the streets. They also offer a few items for sale, and proceeds go towards the animals. The shelter has its own huge parking lot and it's free to park there whether you are dropping off donations or just coming in to play with the animals. Thank you! read more

My boyfriend and I are so thankful for our recent adoption! After several months of scouring the adoption sites throughout Illinois, with no luck we were almost close to giving up! I've visited the Anti-Cruelty website daily for several months. The website is a great way to get a look at all the dogs and it's always updated. On Friday (10/28) we looked over the website and saw a dog that we were very interested in. We came in just after work, a few hours from closing, and thought our chances of adopting this little guy would end up in disappointment. We took a chance! We came in and we were immediately welcomed with warm smiles. Upon entering the Dog Room we were pretty overwhelmed with the amount of people walking through, we were sure that there would be a line forming around the dog we wanted. It didn't take us long to find the little dog that we saw on the website, we were completely shocked he was still available for adoption! We fell in love instantly and the staff member must have seen it and quickly suggested we have alone time with the little guy. We were on our way to getting to know each other and falling in love!! To say the least, we were ready to get the paperwork started and the minute we informed the staff they were happy to hear we came prepared, we had already filled out an application! The staff member helping us went out of her way to get the ball rolling just in time before closing! The adoption process is no joke, the interview was pretty serious and it was nice to know that they make sure that these dogs get paired with the right people! After about an hour(+) of interviewing and signing papers it was such a blessing to hear we would be leaving with a dog that night! We finally found the one! If you are looking to adopt with the Anti-Cruelty Society it is important that you be patient! There is a significant amount of work that goes into taking care of these dogs and often times the staff can be a little shorthanded! As I mentioned before, the adoption process is no joke, come prepared for the interview! Do your research and get informed, It will make the process all worth it when you get to take your new family member home!! We've had our dog for 3 days now and he has shown such great improvement by making our house his castle! The staff wasn't sure if he was potty trained and we were happy to find out after bringing him home that he is! He has a bit of kennel cough but he's pushing through it and really showing us what he's made of! Our home is much brighter now and we can thank the Anti-Cruelty Society for that! I come here on weekends to volunteer, what's great is that you don't have to go through any orientation processes to take the dogs out and spend time with them! You can only take them outside in their large garden area to potty and play, not out on the street. I know there's another program for certified volunteers where you're allowed to do more with the animals. I love getting to socialize with the doggos (especially the big ones that don't get as much attention!). It fills my heart with joy knowing that I'm making a small difference in their sheltered lives by giving them the love they deserve, at least for a little while. The staff has always been friendly. They have to take out the dog and put them back for you (due to safety reason I'm assuming). They never seem to mind when I ask them to take out one dog then another and so on haha.. The kennels they keep the dogs in downstairs are pretty large and have enough space for them to lay down and play comfortably! I know they don't have space to bring all the doggies downstairs in the main room so some of them unfortunately have to stay in a separate area which is upstairs I believe. I always see the shelter crowded with potential adopters, even on cold and rainy days, which means most animals get adopted out fairly quick. In the few times I've visited over the past few weeks, some of the dogs that were there before were missing so I can only assume they're adopted and happily living with their new family :) This is a great place to visit if you're looking to bring a doggo/cat into the family or if you'd like to hang out with them so they're a little less lonely! read more

Went in to browse cats one weekend as a prospective adopter and got to converse with someone (I think a volunteer) in the cat kennels. We expressed that we wanted to meet and have some time with one of the cats in the designated playrooms they have for those who plan to adopt; however, there were only 2 designated rooms for visitors to spend time with cats and both were occupied for quite some time. That's fine, I can wait, but what frustrated me was that a new group of visitors came in and spoke to a different volunteer who was able to get them into one of the rooms immediately to meet with a cat while I was waiting almost an hour for my turn. It didn't seem like the volunteer who met with the new group even consulted with other volunteers to see if there are others waiting for a room (and there were a few people browsing in the cat kennel room too, it wasn't just me). I don't mind waiting about 30 minutes, but I am rating my first time visit there as quite disorganized and a bit unwelcoming... Maybe it's because it was on a weekend and they might've been understaffed that day... but only 1 person/volunteer in the room approached with interest to ask if I needed anything, while others (even if they weren't tending to anybody or busy cleaning up) passed by like I was invisible even though I was on the lookout for someone who wasn't extremely busy to speak to. With what I experienced, I recommend that they communicate better internally and create a system/waitlist for the cat playrooms so that visitors who are interested in interacting with a cat aren't idly waiting their turn if they spoke to someone previously only to learn that someone else got ahead of them. I will say that I don't know whether that new group had set up an initial appointment specifically for that, and even if they did, I would've liked that to be communicated to me/others (e.g., "Sorry for the wait, but they had priority due to XYZ..."). Maybe even consider a designated schedule for prospective adopters versus others who want to socialize with cats. I know we all hate it when we're waiting our turn at the checkout or an event line like a concert and someone slips in front of us to cut the line without asking us if it's ok. That is how I felt, and I was not expecting that; I believe this org can do better and improve the experience of their visitors and potential adopters. read more

In March 2018, my boyfriend and I strolled by the Anti-Cruelty Society next to our apartment. We decided to go inside to casually look at the cats and dogs. When we walked in, one of the volunteers had a dog out on a leash in the foyer. The dog was beautiful and immediately caught our eye. The shelter had named him Bob. We said hi to Bob then went on our way walking around the shelter looking at the cats and dogs. We were just browsing with no intention of adopting an animal. We went back into the main area and there was Bob again. The volunteer asked if we wanted to spend time with him, we said sure! We took Bob out to the back area and immediately fell in love with him. We had an immediate connection and I could not believe what I was feeling. We left the shelter that day and could NOT stop thinking about Bob. We were suppose to run the Shamrock Shuffle the next day, but we blew off the race to go get our dog. Two days later, we brought Bob home and renamed him Kaizer. The application process was seamless and ACS was extremely helpful. He is the BEST thing that has ever happened to us. The most gentle giant, so cuddly and playful. Life is full of unexpected decisions and occurrences. That's why they call it life. Yesterday evening "life" happened to us. We were proud parents of Barnabee until our baby decided to leave us and go to a better place called heaven. He was the best child one could ever have. The husband did not get over his death for a long time. We baby sat friend's dogs, volunteered at shelters etc., but we never considering adopting another child again. You see, we were NOT looking for a replacement for our beloved Barnabee. That's not what pets are for. They are like children, you adopt one when you are ready, and know you can provide for them... not just because you need to replace a dead one. We live a couple of blocks from here. We walk by ACS almost every other day. We look at the dogs staring at us from their cages. During the last weekend we had a discussion about adopting another child. We finally felt like we are ready to provide a loving home again. Yesterday evening we walked into ACS. We walked out with Ballou, our child. The staff at ACS were helpful for the most part. ACS offers a wide variety of services. Your child comes neutered, vaccinated, and tested for all worms and diseases. They even gave Ballou a microchip, and his heart worm medication.... and he has only been there 4 days before we picked him up. The staff sent us home with a bag of food, and his paperwork. Very efficient. We are now proud parents of Ballou. He is still adjusting to his new home (gosh, it hasn't even been 24 hours and he likes to cuddle with us on the couch), but I have a feeling he will learn to love and trust us... just like we will. We have already made changes to our crazy lifestyle because of him. We are training him to get used to our traveling. First step, he is coming with us to Fire Island this weekend. He can be equally gay with his two daddies... or not. I think he understands that he has two daddies, unlike a traditional family. This morning when the husband said "now, white daddy has to go to work... brown daddy will take you out", he looked at the husband as if he understands. Either that or he is thinking "oh gawd, why did I end up with two crazy homos?" Thanks ACS, for bringing more love into our life. P.S. We gave him the name Ballou, after our driver who took us to see giant fruit bats in the Sri Lankan jungle. It was one of the best experiences in our life. EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE I am officially a big fan of the ACS! Last night I gave a second chance to an exceedingly friendly 5-year old cat named Loki. Loki had been given up by his prior owners after 5 years because they supposedly moved to a new apartment that wouldn't accept cats. How sad! How could you give up a member of the family after 5 years? What apartment is that great? But I digress...their loss is my gain. I'm so happy to have Loki in my family. He's got a beautiful, shiny black coat, friendly eyes, purrs non-stop, and I may be losing it but his meows almost sound like words. THINGS I LOVED: -Variety. ACS has BOTH mixed-breeds and purebreds. -How much the volunteers care. Everyone I worked with knew my cat by name and he was far from being just a number. -How thorough they were. They took the time to interview me to make sure that I was a suitable owner, gave me tips on caring for Loki, and spent tons of time with me answering all my questions. I never felt rushed at all. -Free parking. 'nuff said. -Refund? I had no idea, but they actually will refund your adoption fee (although I'm sure you can decline it) if you take home an animal that is more than 5 years old! THINGS I DIDN'T LOVE: -That I couldn't take another one home. :( I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but PLEASE adopt your next pet! I'm really scared. I just got a cat. I'm more scared for the cat than for me.... I'm more of a dog person, but I like cats alright and I don't have enough time for dogs. So the BF and I met up at ACS yesterday to check out the kitties. Lo and behold, there was a furry monster nudging up against the bars of the cage, beckoning me with his wide, curious eyes. Name: Squirrel (aptly named) Age: 10-12 mos (still unclear) Reason he was there: the family had become allergic. So we let him out and let him explore. He nuzzled, let me brush him..he even wore my purse (le chat noir from paris, fortuitous, no?). He shed like crazy, understandably due to the stressful environment. But other than he was sweet, pretty and a total lap cat. I was sold. The ACS asked me some thorough questions per the grumblings/laudings of other reviewers, but it wasn't anything too bad. Then again, I do own my place and have never owned a cat, which seemed to be potential trip-ups for others. The only point where I got grumpy was when they asked how long I planned on leaving the cat alone every day. I answered honestly, about 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. They looked at me expectantly, as if I was supposed to apologize for this alone time that I was about to subject my kitty to. I'm sorry, but I have a Real Job in the Financial District that enables me to provide said home for kitty and I. If you have issues with THAT, then you'll never find a decent owner. Long story short: I brought proof of ownership of my place, my ID, and my credit card for the $55 adoption fee. Kitty's getting neutered today (required by ACS, appreciated by me) and I hope to God it doesn't traumatize him too badly. bf's picking him up at 5...and I'll keep you all abreast of further developments. I would give them a rating of a 1, but they do have some great volunteers so I bumped it up to a 2. If just based on volunteers it would be a 5. Also, Carlos who works there helped us a lot. I had a bad experience with their management and adoption counseling. My wife and I are pretty serious about our cats. They basically have a cat palace at our apartment with 2 giant cat trees, the best food you can buy, plenty of cat beds, and much more. We treat our cats like they are our kids. We found the perfect cat to adopt after going 5 days in a row. I went through the adoption process and they turned me down. I definitely don't agree with their decision. First, they had me waiting on their decision forever- took them over an hour to get back to me. I had to go to the front desk and have them call my adoption counselor before she would deliver the news. Counselor came out and delivered the news to me. I wondered who made this decision. I know she's just doing her job so I asked to speak with a manager. I guess she was the manager although I couldn't be sure. Her name was Abby. We went to a room to discuss further. I was respectful and polite to her as I was pleading my case. She just started laughing at me. She made me feel like a piece of crap. Not something I really want to feel when I'm trying to find a cat to give a wonderful home to. If she's a manager, I really feel sorry for the place and all the animals. The place could definitely use some help. It's sad. I'm never going there again. I definitely don't recommend this place. read more
