We had the best experience at CCR. They were always responsive, helpful, and friendly. We looked for a dog for some time, and we enjoyed that CCR allows you to walk the dog and really get to know him or her before putting in an application. Eventually we found the perfect fit for our family. During the adoption process the CCR staff gave us some very helpful tips about dog ownership. We also found their application review process reasonable and appropriate - they called our references and did their homework but we never felt like their questions were unreasonable or intrusive. Also, we should note that we found the world's best dog here - we can't imagine our family without her! read more

My husband and I were in the market for a pup, but all the ones we had our hearts set on kept getting snatched up. So we switched gears and headed to CCR, with no real expectations. And boy am I glad we did! When we arrived they gave us a full tour and patiently showed us all of the dogs. We were there for upwards of 2.5 hours and never once did we feel rushed. What impressed me most was how honest and upfront they were about each dog's demeanor and whether or not they would be a good fit for our family. I didn't feel like they were trying to force any dogs on us, in fact, it was kind of the opposite. After the tour we met with four dogs and it was clear when I burst into tears at the sight of doggy number three, Hank, that we had found our dog. The adoption process was very extensive. They called our landlord, a reference and waited a few days to give us time to process the decision before bringing our guy home for a house visit. I know some folks have expressed gripes about the long process, but I learned that the rate at which folks return dogs after adoption them is shockingly high. So I feel like CCR takes the extra care to prevent any additional turbulence to these poor creatures, already rough, lives. Post adoption CCR has been equally great. After the first week with Hank we reached out to them with some basic new pet-owner questions and they were super helpful and responded within a few hours. If you're open-minded about the kind of dog you want to bring into your family and are willing to put in a bit of work and patience on a pup-a-roni that has had a rough past I HIGHLY recommend CCR. Hank, has blossomed into a fantastic dog who we simply can't imagine living without. Sure, he's not at all the kind of dog we thought we'd get, but I think that's part of the magic of adopting a furry friend. read more

When adopting a dog, this rescue shelter lacks communication and this Darcy person just utterly lies through her teeth! I put a application for s dog that me and my mother fall in love with, we always try one day out the week visit him for the past 3 weeks! But due to a lack of communication we was told that there was a problem with our application so we had to miss out on the opportunity to adopt a dog that was perfect for us! This woman claims that she sent a email regarding our application but neither one of us gotten that email and like I said before we've been there one day out the week for 3 weeks and no one said anything to us! The application has multiple ways to contacts us. We even called and lefts voicemails! I don't really trust trying to adopt from this rescue! This was a high disappointment for us! read more

I can't speak highly enough about this business. We contacted them about a particular dog. They instructed us to bring our entire family in (my husband, myself and my 2 year old boy). We went in and were given a great tour of the facility. Then, they set aside a large room for us to meet and play with the dog. Well, that dog did not work out because he was too energetic for our son and too big for us. We really wanted to add another dog to our family and the team there recommended a few more dogs for us based on our family dynamic. Well, each dog they recommended was great! We were told to come back another day and to bring our current, older dog to meet the prospective dog. At first we felt like the additional step was overkill, but we figured why not at this point? Well, it goes to show that they know what they are doing. We brought in our smaller dog and that potential dog did not like our current dog at all! The team there said it was not a fit. We then asked to see the back up dog and those two hit it off wonderfully! We settled on a date for them to bring the dog to our house. They came to our house to make sure that we were equipped for adding another dog. Overall, we're in love with our dog from Chicago Canine Rescue. She is part of our family and I'm happy that their process lead us to her. Our son loves her so much and she's a lifelong pal for him. Thank you! read more

My husband & I went to adopt a dog at CCR a couple of months after one of our dogs passed away at the age of 16 & the lab mix initially wanted to adopt did not get along w/ our existing dog. Since we were already up there (we live pretty far away) & our existing dog does not do well in the car, they suggested we take a look at some other dogs & pointed out some dog-friendly dogs they thought might interest us. We ended up with a pit mix puppy named Charlie who we love! CCR made the the whole process easy for us & even though it was the holidays, they still processed our application, called our vet & reference & did the home check within a week. They even brought Charlie to our house & walked us through the paperwork. CCR is one of the most amazing rescues that we have the pleasure of working with. We are a Rescue Transport Coordination Organization and only transport to those rescues that abide to the highest of standards. Over the last 2 years we have sent countless homeless dogs their way who have found happy furever homes thanks to CCR. They are dedicated and have never ending love and compassion even for those doggies with issues and/or medical problems. We have had many volunteers go visit the facility. the dogs are well taken care of and get all kinds of playtime as well as social interaction. they screening process for adopters and fosters is superb and their veterinary care unsurpassed!!! We adopted our dog, Bonsai, from CCR and have nothing but good things to say about them. He had sever separation anxiety when we got him, and the first few days were very difficult. I called CCR several times over those first few days, and they helped me through everything and made lots of great suggestions. Long story short, if it hadn't been for their help, we would have been overwhelmed and probably would have had to bring him back. Now he is the best dog you could ever ask for. Seriously. I can't say enough good things about CCR. They truly care about their animals, taking in the sick and injured that other shelters turn away, nursing them back to health and finding them the perfect home. To some, they may seem strict with their adoption process; however, it is in the best interest of their animals to make sure they are going into good homes and will not be surrendered later. It's actually a very fair and painless process that took less than a week in total. Their adoption fees are very reasonable especially considering you are getting your spay/neuter fees covered, shots, microchip, and a month of pet insurance in case anything happens. When I see people standing outside pet stores in the neighborhood wanting to get a "pure-bred" or trendy mixed breed puppy, I can't help but get upset. My little "mutt" is a million times cuter, more well-adjusted and healthier than a designer puppy that fits in your pocket. There are so many animals out there that need a good home - please consider adopting! Or at the very least, volunteer some time or make a donation of money or supplies. On Valentine's Day we adopted Mona Lisa and renamed her Lucy Valentine. She is the perfect playmate for our 10 year old dog Pogo. They even look like they could be brother and sister. Let me start of by saying, adopting a puppy is very different from adopting a dog. It took me a little bit to understand it, but it makes a lot of sense now. I recently adopted my puppy from CCR and they did take sometime to process our application, but for good reason. I think people forget that the volunteers and workers see one to many dogs and puppies brought back to them like they were a pair of shoes that didn't fit right. Their process was thorough and long, but I am so glad that it was. I found the staff to be helpful and nice. I could understand how they could come off as a bit strict, but they are honest and caring. They see to many "Humans", who have good intentions, come in with their hearts set on a dog and turn around a week later saying"oops, we made a mistake." A dog/puppy is a choice that you make, you are allowed to take the time to think about it. Our hearts are always in the right place and it's easy to get our hearts set on something. I think the staff has seen one to many hearts returned and they have a difficult job finding permanent homes and I commend them and their dedication. Overall, I am so very happy we chose to adopt and I feel we chose the right place. Great Job CCR, keep up the great work. read more

I fostered and then adopted a beautiful, sweet and friendly German Shepherd mix named Wolfgang, who was a stray from Oklahoma. Chicago Canine Rescue has a lot of wonderful dogs that need homes, and the staff is very devoted and caring. I'd highly recommend CCR to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog. If, like me, you're unsure if a dog is compatible with your lifestyle, try fostering! You get a chance to do some good and take care of an animal, but it's only temporary, and you have right of first refusal if you decide you want to adopt the animal. We've had our Moose now for almost 2 years and looking to add a Squirrel!! Lol. These people are all amazing taking care of all these wonderful dogs on a small and ever shrinking budget. They could use all the volunteers you could bring with you. Sure you have to wait to walk a dog or sure its sometimes chaotic, but you can come anytime and take out any dog knowing your doing good. It's not always easy and quick or convenient to do the right thing and that's what makes it worthwhile. My whole family is involved with these good people. When their sign said they needed a snow blower I found a way to remove the snow from their entire parking lot. You take care of the dogs I'll take care of the snow. Every little bet helps. read more

We adopted an older dog from CCR 5 weeks ago and had a great experience. Darcy was wonderful with communication and information on our dog. We visited CCR on a weekend and visited with 2 dogs, one younger and our Molly. Molly is such a sweet girl and we can't imagine life without her. She's about 10 years old, has heart worms but the rescue and MGAH are helping with treatment. It hurts to think people overlook older dogs for pups since we're having such a great experience with our old gal. read more

While CCR may help some, the poor way in which Anna, handled the Vito Katzbeck situation makes me question the integrity & ethics of the organization. CCR lied within their post to raise money for Vito, and never retracted or apologized even when this was pointed out to them. In fact, they chose to delete posts on their FB page noting their inaccuracies. Moreover, they mishandled the entire situaton, causing great heartbreak for Vito & his family. This is counter to the mission of rescue. People make mistakes; the disappointment here is CCR being unwilling to acknowledge their mistake & perpetuating the hurt. So unfortunate. read more

I have fostered dogs with CCR for about 8 years and last year finally adopted two CCR pups! The staff has always been professional, kind, courteous, and helpful whenever I needed anything for the foster pups or had questions. They were also great during the adoption process. They absolutely know what they are doing and I highly recommend them. I adopted my Chihuahua, Lola, from the Chicago Canine Rescue in December 2010 and could not have enough great things to say about this organization. The adoption counselors were prompt in their responses, and genuinely interested in finding a dog that fit my lifestyle, preferences, and capability for caring for a dog. I was very impressed by the fact that they complete a home visit before completing the adoption process - it is telling that they truly care where their dogs end up and want to ensure they adopt out to suitable homes for each animal. The Director, Janice, is a compassionate person who truly loves animals and is willing to take whatever steps possible to give them a good home. I took a puppy behavior class from her, and was very pleased with her knowledge of dogs, and with the fact that she encourages good behavior from the dogs in the shelter from an early age, engaging them with her training tactics early on. Ultimately, I ended up with a fantastic pup who was well-cared for leading up to her adoption. I wouldn't hesitate to adopt from CCR again, and would recommend their services to anyone interested in learning more about adoption. read more

I adopted a senior dog from here who has quite a few issues, but not so many that I wasn't willing to adopt him. They made me quite aware of what all his health needs were & I was willing or I wouldn't have even considered a senior. That was my intention, to adopt a dog that would get looked over because he wasn't "easy" or a "cute puppy." Ironically, my old, bald, toothless wonder boy gets lots of attention because his personality is adorably grumpy. I'm glad this place took its time to call my vet and find out what kind of care I've given my dogs. I noticed a few reviews that were negative because the reviewer didn't like that they got passed over because they weren't responsibly managing their current pet's veterinary care. Those people need to get over themselves. I'm sure they consider themselves loving pet owners, but I've found those people usually relinquish pets easily or their pet suffers due to their lack of awareness. Pets aren't accessories. A guy at work once was talking about adopting a dog from another rescue, but was bewildered why it mattered that he didn't have a vet for his cats, because "they're cats." He didn't even have them spayed or neutered and didn't think twice that he was a contributing factor to pet over population. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people are about pets. Those people that cite how loving they are to "Fido", but haven't a clue that how you treat a pet often reflects much of the rest on how you go out there in the world. I'd rather be around someone who doesn't have pets because they know they are a commitment...rather than someone that has a pet to complete the superficial picture they have of their life. read more

I regret to inform you all that some of the adoption counselors working for CCRF are prejudice and/or racist. So, if you don't live in a rich, white neighborhood, don't bother trying to adopt a dog. My husband and I make a very good living, but have chosen to live in a very culturally diverse neighborhood on the near South Side (Douglas Park) because we like to be able to park on the street and walk our dog in a huge park that isn't swarmed with thousands of people. ANYWAY - When CCRF came to perform their "home visit" they were afraid to get out of their car because there were 3-4 African American men talking in front of their house. If that wasn't bad enough, after they drove away, they accidently called me and hung up on me, never to call back. We waited outside for 45 minutes and they never showed or called. The next day we got an e-mail claiming that the foster family might want to adopt the dog, and that's why they missed their appointment. They obviously didn't realize that we were standing outside when they drove up and then took off without any explanation. I sent an e-mail detailing the events and my utter disgust. They called back the next day and admitted that they were afraid to get out of their car and apologized for lying to us. BUT.... did they want to continue to adoption process? No, of course not, because it wasn't just the person conducting the home visit that was a prejudice/racist snob, the rest of the staff apparently agreed with her. Just thought I'd warn anyone considering adopting a dog from CCRF that doesn't live in a trendy Northside neighborhood, that they won't be considered "suitable". read more

Please save these dogs because the people running the place are horrible. They are not concerned with the well being of the dogs or the potential adoptors. They don't try to put the right dog with the right family. They are more concerned with getting the dog out and getting their fee. I don't think their dogs ever see the light of day, so it is very hard to housebreak a dog that has no problem doing his business in the crate. If you are considering adopting a dog from CCR make sure you ask a lot of questions over and over again. read more

If you have kids, don't go to this place, they have no heart. We visited Canine Rescue last weekend hoping to find a dog to adopt. We took our 7 year old daughter with us. The first lady who helped us was really nice and showed us all the dogs available for adoption. We really liked a dog named Bunny, she was adorable! We requested to spend time with her, the lady said no problem (she said she was ready to be adopted) we really really really like Bunny, she was super playful and very nice to our daughter. She was jumping all over us and licking us (she is a puppy) We have been looking for the last 3 weeks for a dog, so we were super happy to find Bunny. My daughter is very nice and gentle with dogs and we were thrilled to meet Bunny. We were ready to get the adoption process started when....this woman rushed into the room, took the dog into her arms, and in a very rude way (almost as if we were about to kidnap the dog) told us that the dog was not available, that the dog was not ready to be adopted because she needed to be checked by the vet. Hey, I understand that anybody can make a mistake, but at least have some heart, be kind, and polite. This woman clearly saw our daughter playing with the dog and she didn't care at all, she just told us in a VERY rude manner we could not take the dog...on top of that adding "good luck with your search" as if we didn't stand a chance to apply to adopt the dog. We continue adding they didn't know ANYTHING about the dog, make it sound almost dangerous. So I wonder, is my daughter in danger by having this dog licking her and us? but she didn't care, she didn't even say to wash our hands. Our conclusion is that she may have wanted to adopt Bunny herself! I would not recommend this place AT ALL read more

My husband and I have fostered 3 dogs from CCR and are about to take in #4. We love dogs and can't wait to have one of our own, but our current situation won't allow us to commit to owning a dog for the course of its life (say, 15 years), so when I heard about the option to foster, I was intrigued. Fostering dogs with CCR has been an incredibly fun, positive, and rewarding experience. We have had a chance to have some awesome dogs in our home, to learn about different breeds, to get training advice from professional dog trainers, and to make room in the shelter for them to rescue other dogs who would otherwise be killed. And the knowledge that we helped those great dogs recover from difficult pasts and get ready for their forever-homes has been hugely rewarding. But that's just what's great about fostering. What's great about fostering with CCR is that they really provide their fosterers with all the support you could possibly need - for any issue we had, big or small, someone was available to help us 24/7. All the dogs I've met at CCR have been wonderful, sweet creatures, and their foster counselors, trainers, and staff take fostering - something that could be a total gamble - and make it a 100% positive and rewarding experience. Here's how fostering works: - You see a picture of an adorable pup on their website, and submit an application to foster him/her. - They review your application thoroughly, and check up on you through references you provide to make sure that the dog will be in good hands. - With a foster counselor, you meet the dog and get to know his/her personality a little bit. At this time, the foster counselor will tell you just about EVERYTHING you need to know about the dog - if they have any temperament issues or special needs, etc. Our foster counselor, Angel, and all the CCR staff people we talked to have been TOTALLY UPFRONT about what they know about the dogs' temperament and behavior. - They do a quick check of your home (mainly a protocol thing) to make sure it's safe for the dog, and then they leave the dog in your care. - CCR pays for any medical care your foster dog needs, and will provide you with a crate if you need it. They can also take care of the dog for you if you have to go out of town - just give them a little advanced notice so they can make arrangements. And best of all, if you have any difficulties with the foster pup's behavior (after all, going from a shelter to a home is a big transition for the little guys), they can send professional dog trainers who volunteer their services at CCR to your home to teach you techniques and tips to get your foster dog behaving well (and let me tell you, both of the trainers who have helped us are like dog-whisperer miracle workers, no joke!) So if you think you might want to foster a dog, give CCR a call! read more

Pretty bad organization. They don't seem to happy or willing to adopt out dogs for some reason. I found a great dog on the website, but was really hesitant to fill out the application (look at it on their website, it's only rival is a mortgage application) and begin the extremely thorough process but did. Sure enough a week goes by and nobody calls me, i leave emails and messages. Finally I talk with somebody who doesn't even know if I sent in an application....Time continues to go on, I get an email saying they are 'processing my application', several more days pass and no contact. The whole time mind you I still haven't event met the freaking dog, who knows if I want it. They want to do reference checks, call my condo board, call old vets from years ago....So I quite. There are enough dogs in this city. I felt like I was trying to adopt a child! This organization needs to look at other shelters and emulate those policies....namely the anti-cruelty society; they're has to be a reason the ACS is successful in carrying out its mission! Chicago Canine is not the place you think it is. I filled out an application and had passed all the initial "reviews" The first 2 dogs I looked at there where not the right fit your our dog. (We recently had our 13 yr old pass away and want to get another dog to keep our Riley company) I saw another cutie on line last night and called. I was told because is was 3-4 weeks in between I was dropped form their computer and would need to reapply and the process would take another week or so. She could give me a good reason why it was dropped to quickly. I questioned this practice and how hard it makes looking for the right drop for your home and her answer was that's the way it is. I asked to talk to her manager "Anna Johnson" and was told he wasn't in. She went on to say that I was questioning their integrity/care for their dogs and don't bother to apply and don't come back. I was told to adopt elsewhere and then she hung up on me!! Wow!! Clearly CCR only wants you to come in and get any dog and not care about finding the right dog for your family. They are very human unfriendly. I'm so disappointed and shocked at the rudeness of the office staff. Wright Way in Morton Grove is way friendlier and also care about finding the right fit for family. They encourage bringing your dog in to meet a prospective partner. Its sad day when a shelter discourages adoptions. read more
