The mattress was sooo comfy (firm... but that's what I like). The front desk associates were very helpful and breakfast was a nice perk. Chicago Getaway Hostel - Building - Hostels Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I was here in a private room for 3 nights at the beginning of May. Here's how I break it down: THE GOODS - Absolutely beautiful neighborhood feel. This was my fourth trip to Chicago but my first time ever in Lincoln Park, and I quickly realized this was my favorite part of the city. The hostel building itself is a historic landmark itself from a sign in the lobby and you can believe it. - It's a lively atmosphere and I heard a number of different languages when I was in the common areas. Common areas have a dining area, a spacious kitchen, a billiards table and a foosball table. (I think you have to pay for them.) - The people who work here are really nice too - one got into a conversation with me as I was checking out when he saw my Quimby's tote I was lugging around that I picked up on my stay. [Side note: visit Quimby's in Bucktown, a great and unique bookstore!] - A rather spacious room with a bunk bed and desk (plus a spacious closet), numerous power outlets, and my top-floor room gave me a window looking out over the trees. I've never had a ceiling fan in my room before which was a nice touch in addition to the box a/c. - Plenty of places in short distance - outside of just wandering the beautiful Arlington-Deming neighborhood there are a number of places to eat (including Chicago tourist staples), cool little Oz Park celebrating L Frank Baum's time in the city, and of course the park. I went to see a show at Lincoln Hall just down the street too (great venue) so good nightlife too. No problems wandering these streets at night. Drug stores and a couple of baby Targets are within a 10-minute walk if you need some item you forgot. Of course it's not a far walk to Lincoln Park's park because, y'know, it's Lincoln Park after all. - The Brown Line is less than a 10-minute walk, but honestly I never took it - I'd either catch the bus or walk. Plenty of buses and they come frequently. Take advantage of walking to downtown via the Park or the Lakefront Trail for some nice views. THE NOT AS GOODS - Not really many. Of my three nights one of them had some residents who didn't observe quiet hours so I was aware of them when they came back at 3am. The other two nights were good. So you can sometimes hear sounds from down the hall, but that's true at many places. - The bunk beds are metal frames and the lower one doesn't have a lot of space, so when I got up in the middle of the night to take off my top I banged my head against the metal bars I wondered if I suffered a concussion. That's more me than the room though - use some common sense and you can survive. - Water pressure is a little light when showering but is still serviceable. - As you can see, none of these "not as goods" things are a big deal but just in the idea of full disclosure. OTHER THINGS - Dorm bathrooms are on every floor, but alternate between floors for M/F. The hostel is U-shaped, with the common area the base (with rooms upstairs) and west/east wings where the rooms are. I was west wing, where M rooms were 2 and 4 floor, and F rooms were 1 and 3. (Reversed on the east wing.) Easy walk for me but just know you may need to use stairs. - Pillows are a big deal to me because I get headaches easily if they're so soft my head falls through them. These were not that soft but not terribly firm, but since I was solo I just took the other bed pillow for fortification. - Breakfast is eggo waffles, bread, yogurt, 4 types of cereals, and oranges - coffee & tea too. - Some hostels have shampoo/conditioner/soap/gel, and some don't. This one doesn't so just make sure you have them or hope someone forgets to take theirs with them. - Linens and towels are provided. Long story (and it is a long story) short, I love this place. I hope I'll be visiting again soon! read more

Went down for one night with a friend and were in a new neighborhood we'd never checked out. We were happy to find this place. It was inviting, clean, and full of people. After we checked in, we went back to the front desk to ask a question, and the person behind the desk made up a list of places for us to check out! It was so sweet! Everything was a bike-able distance too; bars, restaurants, liquor stores, small markets for items you may have forgotten at home. Our room was super clean, very quiet, comfortable, and very close to the shared bathroom. In the morning we went down for coffee, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and juice. I'd highly recommend staying here. We are coming back soon for more than one night. read more

Visiting Chicago for the first time and I think staying at the Chicago Gateway Hostel was the best possible place we could stay at. Not only was it comfortable the walkability of the Lincoln Park neighborhood was amazing! Lou Malnatis Pizzeria for the deep dish, Kingston Mines for them blues and soul, Del Seoul for the delicious Korean food, Lincoln Park for the Conservatory and Zoo, and the Metro! Nothing was more than a 15 min walk. I recommend for people to stay here. I was with my spouse and friend for three days and we had the Premium Suite which had ample space, ample beds, and our own bathroom. We loved it. I cannot wait till we come back next time. read more

I decided to stay here for my first ever solo trip, and as I write this from the plane on my way home I can confidently say if I had to go back I would not change my decision to stay here. I was unsure if I would feel safe and if it would be the best move to be so far away from the tourist spots. If you are wondering the same, Lincoln Park definitely felt safe, as did this hostel. It is an incredibly charming neighbhorhood, with tree lined streets, and you really feel like you're walking amongst the locals, vs. tourists like I did when I was down visiting sights like Cloud Gate. It's a very walkable area- I was able to walk to different streets that had a number of restaurants, bars, even Target and Trader Joe's. For super close places I would recommend Kala Modern Greek for lunch or dinner (fresh & delicious!), Colectivo Coffee for coffee and quick breakfast (their sausage, egg, and cheese muffin sandwich was amazing!! also fell in love with spending time on their massive patio.) I'd also recommend walking down Fullerton and either walking or renting a Divvy bike for the day or for a couple hours to along the lake front trail! The bike ride was one of my favorite experiences while I was visiting Chicago. I'd also recommend doing the River Architecture Cruise - I did it through Wendella but there are a number of companies that put on tours. Back to my hostel review: I wasn't looking for a dorm experience, so I opted for the single room with half bath (toilet and sink) and I'd highly recommend! The bed was quite comfy and came with two pillows- I will say there was only a sheet and a thin fleece blanket- coming in the summer this was all I needed but I imagine it must be quite chilly during cooler months. In addition to the bed my room had a desk with chair and little closet complete with some hangers. There was also a window box AC unit and a ceiling fan which I kept running all throughout my stay since it was warming up outside. It was nice that at the end of the night all I'd need to do was go take a shower in the shared facilities (separate restrooms with showers and toilets for both men and women) then I could retreat back to my room for the evening vs. needing to pop out every time I needed to use the bathroom in the night or go brush my teeth. The shower facilities were okay- on the third floor where I was there were two stalls with showers so you could separately shower and change in one place. There were also additional showers with shower doors only, no full stall with locking door. Thankfully there was always one stall open when I went to shower. My only complaints are the shower water pressure was pretty bad in both of the shower stalls and only one of them had a shower rack to hang toiletries. But the hostel did provide you with towels, which albeit super small and thin, were appreciated as one less thing I needed to pack. The hostel did provide breakfast- basics like toast, yogurt, and oranges. And I believe maybe coffee? I only grabbed oranges on my way out in the morning. Other pluses: there were vending machines with drinks and snacks, even frozen pizzas and ice cream for purchase. They also had an epic patio area where I ate dinner most nights. I'd definitely recommend and stay here again. No frills but definitely worth the price! read more

Absolutely horrendous service. It's some hole in the wall repurposed Apartment building being passed off as a hotel. There was some drunk guy in the lobby falling asleep whenever I walked in. First room I got had a radiator that was raising a racket. I asked for a different room, to which I was given, with an even louder radiator. I paid extra for my stay specifically so I would be able to refund it if necessary despite talking to Bobby Jones upfront, which I doubt if it's even his real name, he refused to honor my booking and refused to give a refund. I was told the radiator was "not that loud"This is my first time staying at a hostel and I wish I had heeded my brother's advice. it's in a noisy part of town, parking is almost an additional $40. read more

1 star for a subpar/gross experience at Chicago Getaway Hostel. I rented a private room for 3 nights looking for a clean/decent place to sleep and shower while I was in the city for a work project. Chicago Getaway Hostel did not fit the bill. The Hostel is in a beautiful Lincoln Park neighborhood with tons of giant trees and you really can't find a better location to get the LP vibe but then walk a block to hop on trains/buses. The cost for a private room is comparable to a hotel room, but I chose this place because it's location was within walking distance to where I was going to be working. After looking at reviews and photos of the hostel, it seemed like a very modern and clean place that I would be comfortable staying at... unfortunately the photos were deceiving and the reviews did not represent my experience. When I walked up to the building, I had to walk through a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk outside the hostel smoking (great for my asthma) to enter the building. This happened every time I entered/exited the building over the next few days, which was a real turn off to me. The check in process was quick - the person checking me in rushed through all of the instructions and gave me no written document that verified what he went over, so that was fun. My room looked nice at first glance - 2 bunk beds, a desk, shower/toilet/sink. All the essentials. Upon further investigation here's what I found (some photos attached)... the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. I don't know when it was last cleaned, but it had to have been a long time. The amount of dirt/grime built up in that shower made me feel dirtier than I was when I walked in. One shouldn't have to buy flip flops to shower in a private room bathroom they rented. There was buildup ON THE SHOWER HEAD where the clean water is supposed to come out of but there was nastiness caked on so it passed through that first. The beds were pretty uncomfortable. The mattress was very thin and I could feel the bars through it, so it was rough sleeping. A majority of the linens had a ton of stains/loose hairs on them (especially the pillows) and they were very rough in texture. All of this combined made me feel very gross and like the room hadn't been cleaned at all. For the price of a hotel room I'd expect a much higher level of cleanliness from this place. I had reservations to stay last night, and ended up not staying. I went to check in and the bubble headed vocal-fry speaking, Possibly teenaged front desk clerk asked me for my ID. Fine. I gave her my military ID, as I am an Army Officer. She told me it wasn't valid ID. She asked me for my driver's license, which I gave her. My driver's license is expired, as it can be if you are a service member and serving away from your home of record. She refused my reservation, saying I had no valid ID, and it needed my home address. I gave her my home address. Wasn't good enough. Apparently, she was too thick headed to understand that a federally issued ID trumps a state issued ID, and that they are absolutely valid for identification. I asked to speak to the manager and was told that he wasn't there, it was just her and the other young girl (equally bubble headed and couldn't complete a sentence who were there. In the end, they told me that because I didn't have "valid ID" that was state issued, I couldn't stay for the night. I'm guessing that also means they don't allow foreigners to stay, since they don't have a state issued ID? It was total crap. I took my things and left. Ended up being an amazing blessing in disguise, because I booked a room at the Hotel Lincoln, and was treated wonderfully, thanked for my service, was never even asked for my driver's license or any other form of ID (when I offered, they're very professional desk clerk said "No need, pretty sure a military ID is the most valid form of ID out there along with a passport"), I was given 2 drink vouchers for the rooftop bar, went up, had a drink, a very tasty dinner with a wonderful view, and then after the concert I attended, had quite possibly the best margarita ever made, and then slept like a rock in a very comfortable and stylish room. So, there you go...thanks for your two front desk clerks being complete idiots, because I ended up going elsewhere and having a fantastic evening! read more

Honestly for a hostel, this place wasn't bad! The prices were amazing and the bathrooms were very clean. I would stay here again next time. My only issue was how thin the walls were. Everytime i dozed off, I would hear someone opening and closing a door in the hallway which was really irritating. Besides that, the stay was great! read more

Chicago Getaway Hostel - Beds - Hostels Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

The last time that I stayed there, they had a full commercial kitchen that guests could use - and did! That alone was a 5 star experience, for me, but there's more. private dorms, shared dorms, and private rooms which is really convenient for groups with a variety of ages or mixtures of couples and singles billiards some off street parking a tv den a patio for beverages lockers for your luggage so that even if you use the dorms there is secure storage Also the location is close to 2 major city trains and located in one of the plushest city neighborhoods, full of cafes. Wrigley is only a couple stops North on a very nearby city train, or about 5 minutes in a rideshare (without game traffic). On a good day you could even walk it and be in good company, but not past early evening unless you have a group and at least one sober person ;) Many international tourists stay here. They have compassionate but good policies that prevent unsuitable guests, which helps keep the hostel experience safer. read more

This was by far the most terrible experience I have ever had. The managers Vincent and Danny need to be fired immediately if they want good business. Vincent and Danny treat customer like crap. Danny and Vincent started screaming at me, cussing me out by calling me names and immediately called the police on me. They were so aggressively screaming at me that I started shaking in fear. All I tried to do was sit down and was talking politely to them about needing heating because the rooms are freezing at night because the temperature drops down in 50s. They have turned off all the radiators that release heat in the Spring time itself. They called the police and kicked me out of the hostel without any refunds just because I tried complaining about how me and my dorm mates have been freezing without a space heater in the room. I'm still traumatized by the incident and by the way Vincent and Danny treated me and accused me. Danny even pushed me but accused me of touching him whereas it was him who touched me and pushed me. I kept telling him that I just wanted to talk calmly and was trying to reason out with him but he wouldn't let me even talk or wont even listen to me. It was an episode of continuous screaming at me and calling me "psycho". The aggression from Danny was overwhelming and brought me to tears. The higher management needs to re-train Danny and Vincent on anger management because both of them have anger issues. When I told them that I am only giving them a feedback because of freezing conditions in the rooms, their response was "Get the fuck of here", and they proceeded to call the police on me. I am left shaken by this horrible treatment. Noone should be treating another human being like this especially in the hospitality industry. Please STAY THE HELL AWAY from this place!! Danny even called me names like Psycho and Cinderblock multiple times in front of all the guests and started hitting his hands on his head. Something is definitely wrong with him. I have never been treated like this especially when I was sitting down and trying to talk politely. I was also coerced into deleting the video that I took of Danny screaming at me at a public place like front desk. The police also forced me to delete his video from my phone and handcuffed me when I refused to delete it because I was keeping it as a proof of the bad behavior of Danny. All this is extremely traumatizing and unjust. I was even coerced into deleting the video that had proof of evidence where Danny was screaming and insulting me aggressively. They got the police to threaten an arrest if I didn't delete the video. Extremely traumatizing! read more

Just called the hotel, we have rez in a few weeks. I don't expect hostel type student service when I call to this hotel as I have stayed here before and it was marvelous. Lida answers the phone and when I ask to speak to a manger - She asks "why?" I explain, "I would prefer to speak with manager about my up coming stay, I have some questions only they can answer" She literally says " my managers are very busy and they request before speaking to people that I write down the questions!, they are busy" She said that 3xs to me and refused referring me to them. The "busy" word here is rude to say to a customer, you are in the hospitality biz !! So I explain to Lida "I don't expect to speak with them now, please give them my info and have them call me at their earliest connivence, Iam in no rush" She states again "My managers have trained me that they MUST get the question first and they will decide if they will email you or not!" Wait wait wait, Iam sorry lets workout why this statement blows my mind! 1st. If I have a complaint about a person, which I do not, it's inappropriate to explain it to a staff member whom is also an employee and equal in status to the person I would be talking to. If the complaint is about towels or the room etc great, I can tell any staff member but when I is about an employee it's best to only speak to a management as its unprofessional for create a potential gossipy situation. Sooooo, her continuing to say "I need the question first" is noisy, and maybe I have a sensitive question that I am not comfortable talking to an hourly front seat person about. 2. The reason I called is to ask a question that is out of the authority of the person who answers the phone or who is at the front desk. 3. I want the correct answer and don't want to waste my time - lets get the right answer the first time. And talk to the person who has the authority to make it happen. Lida needs to understand that customer service is HOSPITALITY! The customer, Me, clearly has eluded to needing a manger. She basically said to me - A. Her managers don't deem guests important B. Managers don't have time for their patrons! C. I am the Powerful gate keeper and do not deem you important (to the level of repeating "they don't want to talk to people without knowing why first") 3xs D. Our Guests don't matter Then I started to explain this to Lida and tell her after she said 3xs "I need your question and they are too busy for you" I stated, just take my number and have them call me at their connivence" She started to talk over me This person has a HUGe power trip and isn't listening or performing her duties as a concierge -her job. So as she cut into my sentence and starting talking over me, I cut in " excuse me Lida" she kept talking "Excuse me Lida" she kept talking about how they have instructed her ... Awesome hostel! I loved the staff, my room, the layout, the kitchen, location, everything. I literally have zero complaints about this incredible hostel. I booked it last minute and wasn't sure what to expect. I actually called another hostile first but their rooms were twice as much as this place so I decided to give this place a try. Because the man on the phone was so nice, I felt comfortable coming and just booking it on the spot. Boy was I right! Waleed & Langston greeted me and showed me SO MUCH LOVE at check in. Once I arrived at my room, it was super cute and clean with a cute garden view. The hallway was quiet with very minimal other guests (came to visit April 2021) which I appreciated haha. I had a private room and bathroom, which were both very very clean. I also had a very positive experience with A manager, Vincent. He was so accommodating to my request for a late checkout and need to have a private common area room for class. He treated me like VIP, just like Waleed and Langston did, which was awesome! Oh also, I missed breakfast haha. But when I went down to the kitchen, a nice young man who was cleaning (can't remember his name but he was from Benin, West Africa), offered to help me prepare some cereal, waffles or juice. He was so sweet! He went and got me the juice machine and taught me how to say apple juice in French. Again, treating me like a VIP made me feel welcome, safe and appreciated. My only issue was that the water took five minutes to get hot but I honestly think that's normal in older chicago buildings. This building is definitely renovated nicely and is almost perfect so don't even worry about that. If you're traveling to or through the Windy City, I would definitely give this place a try. The neighborhood is sooo cute and close to a lot of cool restaurants and shops. Highly recommend!! read more

I really want to like this place, but there we some major downsides. Stayed here for two nights recently, when in town for a couple day trip to see a Red Sox game. However, let's first start with the positives. - The location! The hostel is located in the heart of Lincoln Park. About a block from the Clark Street bar and restaurant street. It is also close to public transit and easily accessible for public transit. - Front desk staff is friendly and helpful. Now for the negative sides of the property. - The rooms are not nearly as nice as what they show. The rooms are actually quite rundown in comparison. - They do not clean your room daily, unless you pay an extra $5 a day. - The beds are terribly uncomfortable ok mfortable and the bedding is absolutely uncomfortable and disgusting. Stains on sheets and stray hairs on the bed. - Their breakfast is a joke and if you aren't there the first 40 minutes, no continental breakfast, which is just oatmeal and eggs from a carton/bag. - The price for a private room with a old, squeaky bunk bed is $100 a night, and that is a bit obscene. I've stayed in hostels as round the world and this is the most expense one I've stayed in. - Finally the bathrooms are disgusting and smell of sewage and the place as a whole upstairs smells a bit moldy. Overall it ot the best experience ever, but could have been worse. read more

I had the pleasure of staying in the Getaway Hostel not once but twice while in Chicago for a concert. I actually stayed in two different types of rooms. I stayed in the Crash Pad without bathroom and the Premium crash pad with bathroom. I admit when I first booked the rooms, I was a little hesitant at first but as soon as I walked in the lobby all that changed. The hostel has a very youthful and vibrant atmosphere. The desk clerks were very helpful when we checked in, they were kind and courtesy. They also helped us find the redline and other important parts of the area. Since the hostel is located in a neighborhood where everything is in walking distance, you have plenty of options for food. The hostel also has a kitchen where you can make your own food as well. It had a small game room where you can play foosball or even pool. A TV room is available as well The rooms are sparse but so the job. The Crash Pad had a set of full size bunk beds and a small desk. The communal bathrooms are located down the halls. Both male and female on the opposite ends of the hallway. The Premium crash pad I also stayed in, had a separate full size bed and a set of bunk beds. While sparkly decorated, just a sheet and blanket it did the job. The Premium also had a microwave and a small fridge as well. Overall, I would recommend the hostel for a nice economical place to stay if you're in the Lincoln Park area. read more

It's a hostel, so you only get the bare bones, but rooms and bathrooms were clean. Excellent location, 10 minute walk to the Lincoln park zoo and even closer to a large selections of bars and restaurants. Pretty decent free breakfast and a nice communal areas and outdoor patio, great for meeting other people staying at the Hostel. If you're looking for some place affordable and low key, this place is great! read more

I planed my trip to Chicago in less than 24 hours and booked a room here without doing research first which I never do, and I was pleasantly surprised! The place felt very safe. You need to be buzzed into the building and they always have staff at the front desk. Once in the lobby you also need to have a guest key card to access the hallway with the bedrooms. The hostel is nestled in a really cute neighborhood with lovely brownstones. It's a quick walk to Starbucks, Walgreens, and a bunch of other great spots. Traveling alone from Seattle I felt at home in this part of the City. I had a private room. It was pretty bare. Just a bed, a desk, and a chair. But if you're there to see the City and don't need a fancy hotel, I definitely recommend this place! read more

Wonderful hostel! I made some cool friends and great memories here. The location is hard to beat. It's on a quiet street in Lincoln Park, surrounded by gorgeous two- and three-story stone walk-ups, around the corner from a cool church, and a short walk from a bustling commercial avenue. There is convenient access to the popular areas in the Loop either by the L or by bus. While it's not smack dab in the middle of the Loop, like the HI hostel, the Getaway makes up for it by offering a quieter respite from the urban core. It's also a nice stroll or bike ride to the lakefront, and a nearby park. I actually kind of fell in love with the neighborhood, although I will probably never be able to afford LP. The staff were very, very helpful. Prices were very reasonable, if you get the eight- or 10-bed dorm option. There is a main area, with an adjacent movie room, and a kitchen area to make your own food. The breakfasts are a bit meager--they really only offer waffles and maybe some fruit toppings--but it'll keep you going until lunch for a few days. The outdoor patio is also quite nice. I have one complain. The bathrooms really need some TLC. In my room, the showers had what I'm pretty sure was black mold. I had shower slippers but what about the people who didn't bring them? I brought it to the front desk's attention, and they said they'd take care of it, but...that's really something you should be on top of. That stuff doesn't just pop up one minute to the next. My first trip to Chicago and I was honestly just looking for an affordable hostel that was close to the event I was attending. Chicago Getaway Hostel was perfect. It was near the redline and other means of public transportation, so you could get to many destinations in about 10-20 mins. The hostel was clean, the staff were nice. I didnt partake, but there were scheduled events and club tickets you could get for free. Events includuded outings to live music spots, brewery tasting events, and karaoke nights. Every morning there was breakfast with cereal, toast, oatmeal, some days eggs, and hot coffee or tea. The hostel was a short walk to the zoo, and a quick train ride to Mussum Park, and the Art Institute. Also it was nearby several cool bars and restaurants, like local spots, not crappy fast food. read more

This was my first experience staying in a hostel and although apprehensive at first, I tried to keep an open mind while traveling with others who recommended it. The hostel was very affordable, great for small groups and located in a beautiful neighborhood, Lincoln Park. It's a quiet, residencial area in walking distance to a hub of shops (Target, TJ Maxx, other stores & small businesses) and restaurants. The nearest bus stop and metro station are about a 10 minute walk from the hostel. The receptionists at the desk were very friendly and helpful and the hostel had a cool TV room and lounging area downstairs. Now, as for the hostel itself, I was very displeased. A horrible smell lingered in the lobby smelling of mildew and a fragrance to try and mask it. Our guest room appeared to be decent on entry but after settling in I noticed hair on the bed (not belonging to me) and the room was freezing and our heater wasn't working. When I asked the receptionist about it, he told me there was nothing he could do and offered extra blankets. We had our own toilet room and sink in the room but the toilet was dirty and there were boogers on the bathroom wall. The showering room/ shared bathroom was full of mildew that covered the shower curtains and shower walls. There wasn't much light or ventilation in there either. If you do stay here, I would recommend a room with a private bathroom although I don't see them as being any better based off of other reviews. Males and females are in separate dorms but there were men walking through the hallway and entering guest rooms on our side which made me uncomfortable coming from the showers and in my towel. I don't believe smoking was permitted in the building but I could smell marijuana in the hallway. Free breakfast is offered which is nice but I didn't have an opportunity to enjoy it having to leave earlier than it was served each morning. Next time, I'm sticking to a nice hotel. read more

We came to Chicago for a wedding. The hostel was easy to find. However!! Upon arrival, we were told we couldn't check in until after 3, when I was told differently the night before. Ultimately, we ended up being able to check in early, so we could make the rehearsal dinner at 4pm. We decided to get a private room. With a private bathroom. The phrase you get what you pay for is true. The room wasn't clean and the bathroom was small. Small double bed, small blanket. It was extremely loud and cold. Sleep was difficult, people were rude. There was only 1 working outlet in the entire room. Our door didn't lock. All inn all. It wasn't a very comfortable stay. We won't be returning. read more

The building is so cute. I love the residential area that it is in. We went to Chicago for my 21st birthday. The room was small, a full bed, desk, and bathroom, no shower. We were only staying for one night. Free breakfast in the morning from 7-9:30. Waffles, cereal, traditional breakfast food. We will definitely be staying again. read more

This brought me back to my youth! VERY cool aesthetic, immaculately clean (except for women's bathroom - more on that later). The location is BEAUTIFUL - lovely, quiet residential area! The bunks are a little low as far as head clearance for the bottom bunk, (at least in 110), but comfortable and quiet. Cool international patronage, it felt like being in Europe. Breakfast was generous, amazing kitchen facility available to use. Towels are not big enough, though, and more attention must be paid to the women's bathroom, especially in the mornings. Counters and sinks were soaked, covered in hair, and needs a private area for changing in the showers. Otherwise, it was a lovely stay! read more

First night here and I'm already dissatisfied. The front desk guy "Dutch" is rather arrogant. I was cooking some food, which I had to get creative with, because they only have a microwave and no other cookware. He threw a fit because of a "mess" I was about to clean up. A few hours after this incident, I was about to take a shower and forgot my key in my room. Unfortunately, I had to ask him to let me in my room. He had a rude undertone in his response and immediately got flustered. If you want to be in the company of courteous staff with good manners, you'd be better off going somewhere else. read more

Coming to Chicago I decided I'd rather spend $200 a week for a hotel instead of $200 a day and with that I found this Hostel. This was my first Hostel experience and if they are all like this I will never stay anywhere other than a hostel again. The rooms weren't high class, but you shouldn't expect that when you're spending less than $30 a night. I shared a room on the lower level there were 8 bunks and we had our own bathroom. It was perfect for what I needed, somewhere to crash after a long long day out on the town. Any time I spent at the hostel not sleeping was in a common area which were all clean and nice with plenty of comfy seating. This was my favorite part spending time in the common rooms playing pool with guys from all over the world. I've made life long friends from this hostel and I can't wait to come back and make more. The staff was beyond friendly and at 5 in the morning when we were still up playing pool they were making jokes and playing piano for us. They had breakfast in the morning and bbq on the weekends(I think the bbq is during the summer only). They put together pub crawls and really got to know the guests while we were there. All in all HIGHLY recommend this place if you want to have fun and meet some new people. I do NOT recommend this place if you want your alone time in a nice plush hotel room. read more

Generally a nice hostel in a number of ways. On a quiet street in Lincoln Park but still near restaurants, transportation, and more. Staff are generally friendly, and common areas are comfortable and inviting. Laundry is available. One major downside to this hostel is that the insulation between rooms is not great, and since this hostel is near a large number of bars, noise can get frustrating, especially at 1-2am and especially on weekends. You'll hear doors opening and closing at all hours, you'll hear your neighbors, and you'll hear the (often large crowd of) people socializing and smoking outside your windows. The quiet policy (if there is one) is not well enforced. Bottom line: if you're a sound sleeper and/or you tolerate noise well, this could be a great place for you. If not, bring some earplugs and/or potentially look at other options. read more

Beware: male dorms are not just for males, but also for females. I was surprised to see a girl laying on one of the bank beds when I checked in the middle of the night ! Totally did not expect that. The good: my bed looked clean The bed: showers were dirty , with halls on the wall, honestly i was discussed to take a shower, but I had to. Lastly, the girl who checked me in on Nov 25th at 10 pm was not really kind. I did not feel welcomed. It was a good place, the website pictures def are not a good vision of the place as it looks new and pristine but in reality its okay. Nothing amazing but is located in a central area, close to the lake, affordable, etc. What grossed me was 1. The bedding is not given a softner so it was quite rough and made me itchy and 2. I was nervous walking from the train to the hostel because I've never stayed at a hostel before and I wasn't really sure what to expect. I can assure whoever you are that is reading this, this is an all right place. The hostel encourages interaction. The layout includes a decent sized lobby, cafeteria and a side sitting room. The cafeteria itself isn't so much a cafeteria where you are served (a continental breakfast is available,) but more of a place where depending on your stay, you can store groceries, cook them and eat them. The hostel provides cooking utensils and silverware. I didn't take advantage of this, but the option is there. I had a single room and it was small, but that wasn't a big deal because I didn't spend that much time there. I was happy at the good amount of power outlets so I could plug in and recharge for the next day. The bathrooms were kept clean and convenient to use. Depending where your room is you might have to walk a while, but it's a small consolation. One drawback for me, which isn't much of a reflection on the hostel was the location. It's about six blocks off of the red line near DePaul in a nice and quiet neighborhood. I wouldn't mind it as much if I was staying for an extended time visiting, but it was a bit away from some nightlife and tourist attractions.
