I am disappointed that the only hostel I ever stayed in when I was in town changed their room arrangements and now mostly caters to people travelling together. I liked having a familiar place to stay when I was in town. The only dorm option for solo travelers is now a 12 person mixed dorm, not an ideal option for many, especially women. In the summer the rates are about $60, which is too much for a 12 person dorm. And those 8 person female dorms I liked with an ensuite bathroom are now $500 rooms for those who travel with 7 friends I guess. It is a nice place but unfortunately it is now just a private hotel room for the most part. If you travel with friends, this is great for you. The rest of us have to seek a better option, as this hostel clearly does not care about solo travelers anymore. read more

This was just the cheapest place I could find to stay kind of last minute for Fourth of July weekend. I thought it was still kind of expensive for the little prison cell rooms, but it was fine and I'd stay there again. You only get a thin little blanket - I don't know if it would be different in winter, but it was fine for the summer. There is a women's shower on each floor, it just wasn't obvious on the fourth floor like the men's was, so you don't have to wash your hair in the little sink you paid extra to have - unless you want to! It's in a pretty nice quiet neighborhood and it's a very short walk to the Fullerton station on the red/purple/brown lines. It's also pretty close to Whole Foods if you're buying stuff to make food in the kitchen. When we went they were painting the walls so you had to be careful not to brush up against anything which was kind of annoying. We were there for specific stuff, but they had hostel events posted in the elevator like bar crawls etc which could be fun if you're staying a while. read more

WARNING CROOKED DON'T STAY HERE!! I stayed here 3 or 4 times and the last 2 times were in 2020 I'm staying there now in 2021 and management is charging me almost twice the rate as before. Told me they're no shared rooms but I've seen shared rooms all over the place. On top of the close to almost doubling bed rate they they sprung a $50 security deposit upon my check in arrival. It must be all the hi class winter homeless there housing. This is how they treat there reliable repeated patronage better to give business to the competition even if I have to pay equal or more management out right lied to me trying to convince me there not pissing on me its raining. That I'm getting a deal that's what's so disappointing. Not much better than hillbillies. They never gave me this crooked treatment before. read more

We stayed with our family of four. Was a little hesitant as hostels are not usually marketed as family joints, but was pleasantly surprised! Our girls loved what they called the "secret spy" theme the place has going. The continuous aesthetic of red, white, and black gives the place an upscale feel. The people behind the desk were super friendly and gave us directions to a nearby garage to park our car. The room itself was great. There was a bunk bed for the kids and a queen size bed for the adults. There were quirky additions well loved by our family, like the lockers, bean bag, and Coca Cola fridge. We were most surprised by the size of the shower - It could've been a room itself! It was a quiet night's sleep, however the mattresses and pillows weren't great. Breakfast was bare bones, but was still great considering the price. Incredible location too, so close to many awesome restaurants in a SAFE neighborhood. We loved our stay at the Chicago Getaway Hostel and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere offbeat and affordable in Chicago. Will definitely be returning. read more

Very clean hostel that was super easy to find and arrive at. I really liked how pleasant and nice the staff was. Shout out to Langston and Danny for being helpful and answering all of our questions. I appreciate them being able to give advice to tourists. They have a reasonable breakfast. You can have your lugguage on hold here. The posh pad room was amazing and had everything we needed and more (nice Atari system and tv). A bad situation happened and I had no choice but to take a chance on this place.. wow am i glad!! Everyone was very welcoming, beautiful neighbood, I felt safe walking at night (the only time in chicago for 5 days staying somewhere else). CLEANN!!! The rooms were a decent size but enough since we were only there to sleep. Only negative is the locations of the bathrooms. From my room I had to walk down 2 hallways and through the stairs. This is a great hostel in a great area in Chicago! I've stayed here twice now and you can't beat the price. Both times staying here was about $80-$100 for 3-4 nights, so very affordable for short stays. The staff was friendly and were very helpful. My second visit I didn't get there til almost 2 AM and someone was there to receive me and answer any questions I had. Originally I had an 8 bunk booked but with some complications they had me in a 4 bed room. It was unexpected but nice. They are pretty good about keeping their space clean. PROS: Extremely helpful and friendly staff, nice and safe location, good prices if you're reallllly on a budget CONS: It looks decently clean as long as you don't really pay attention to the smaller details. The shower heads are heavilyyyy caked with calcium. I can deal with that but NOT the bugs and maggots crawling around in the mini fridge. I stayed in the premium crash pad so I was excited to have a mini fridge but after opening it (it wasn't plugged in when we arrived) the smell was absolutely disgusting and the bugs crawling around inside made me feel extremely uneasy about the cleanliness of the entire place. I made sure to stay away from it and did not open the microwave sitting on top of it in case the same thing would happen. Can someone please clean the inside of the mini fridges! Awesome hostel! I stayed on my short four day vacation in an 8 bed dorm for about $100 total. Front desk was helpful and quick with my checking in/out. Location was perfect! About a 10 minute walk to CTA lines, 5 minutes to the nearest Walgreens and bars. Standard bunk beds filled the dorm and they assign whether you will be top or bottom bunk. There was a sink with a mirror and lockers in the actual room and a shared bathroom with shower attached to the room. Outlet located next to every bed to charge phones, ipods etc. They have a huge industrial kitchen for you to cook in with gigantic fridges to store food/beverages. I stayed here about a year ago while looking for apartments (and now I live a couple blocks away!). It's on a quiet residential street, but only a block or two from the main drag of Clark St. I remember it wasn't that expensive for a dorm room (35 bucks I think?). The rooms were basic.. simple bunk beds with reading light and a locker to store your stuff. The room I was in was right by the lobby, but the women's bathroom was way down the hall in the back of the building. The lobby, kitchen, and lounge area is nice and spacious, and they do free make your own waffles in the morning. There's also a patio out back. It's a good location for restaurants and bars, close to Lincoln Park, the zoo, DePaul. It's also easy and close enough to get downtown to do touristy things. read more

I really loved staying at this hostel during my short trip to Chicago. The neighborhood is quiet and nice to walk through in the evenings especially. That being said it is a little bit far from the usual Chicago sites and you can expect 15-20 minutes on any transportation to the heart of the proverbial action, but there are bars and a little street of stores within a 5 minute walk of the hostel. Amenities & Staff: This hostel is very large and clean. They have Laundry, hostel events, large bathrooms similar to what you'd find at a shopping mall and very friendly staff. In fact the staff is what made this hostel a 5 instead of 4 stars. I was having a coughing fit and they even gave me a few cough drops. When I asked for directions or suggestions they wrote me step by step instructions and let me know things like safety without even asking. The kitchen is UH-MAZING. Not only is it large, but very well organized. Each guest can have a Tupperware container in the pantry and another in the fridge. This means your stuff is safe and the storage areas stay clean. During breakfast they have some nice staff helping to clean up dishes, though I felt a little awkward asking someone else to do my dishes when I just enjoyed free breakfast of cereal, fruit, bagels and juice. Guests: I only stayed here a few days, but the guests seemed different than other hostels I have stayed in. There was a very high number of U.S travellers and older folks when I was there. This means the vibe is less rowdy and more of a sleepy relaxed vibe. Many hostel guests opted to stay "home" at night and enjoy the in house events. I also noticed less intermingling between guests than in other hostels. People also tend to sleep in a lot more here so if you're an early morning plastic bag rustler ( you know who you are! Every hostel has a few) do that at night. Would I stay again? Yes and no. Yes I would stay at this hostel if I were going to Chicago and was generally interested in this area. I say no partly because of my overall opinion of Chicago. Chicago is not exactly a bustling metropolis of a city so you really need to stay in the heart of the action if you want to enjoy an active vacation where you're doing many different things. This hostel's location and comfortable nature lends more towards relaxing and maybe meandering out for a little bit during the day. read more

This place is more a 4 1/2 stars. From the time we were booking, everyone there was super friendly and helpful. From O'Hare, it was about $33 or so from the airport. Once there, we were impressed with how clean the space was. They do a great job making sure bathrooms, rooms and common spaces are clean. Our room was ready by morning, but if it's not, they'll definitely store your luggage while you go out and explore.The private room for two was nice, smaller than expected, but comfortable. There was a bunk bed, a desk and a small closet. In the mornings, they offer a complimentary breakfast - mainly toast, oatmeal, coffee and tea. You can also store your food in bins in the kitchen, which is quite convenient as well. Everything is extremely organized, something I've yet to see in a hostel kitchen. They organize outings and activities for every night of the week and generally try to foster a social environment. For the most part, it's a very young hostel (college age, young adults), but we did notice a family and a few older folks. When we were there, the common room was always packed at night with people drinking beer, talking, etc. It's located in a residential area in Lincoln Park, however, there is still alot to do. Lots of eateries and live music joints either walking distance or a short train ride away. It's convenient that the Fullerton stop is about a 10 minute walk from the hostel too. If you have any questions, they have a variety of brochures and maps. Feel free to ask at the front desk as well. One big negative is that the wifi didn't work very well, even in the common areas where we were told it would. There are about 6 available computers downstairs, but they get pretty busy. Also on a few occasions it did get a little loud, with people being rowdy in the halls at like 3am. People's voices from outside the hostel would carry up to our room sometimes too. Not the hostel's fault of course, but perhaps there could be more attention to this. On the last day, they were more than happy to store our baggage while we went out to the city. A nice bonus! You won't get a better value for the level of service and convenience here. Be sure to check it out! Zero. The rooms are dirty, the bathrooms/showers are dirty, the staff are not friendly and the place is under constant construction. Lincoln Park is great though, if you are really white. I have stayed there twice. I gave it the benefit of doubt the first time. Once in 2009 and then again in 2010 and it was the same both times. I have also stayed at the hostel in the Loop and the Loop is much cleaner and closer to everything. But the Loop is not so much a hang out for stoners and drinkers. Thats what the Getaway is for. If you are white and into that... great! But if you want to see/know Chicago, Getaway is definitely NOT the place. PS edit: I notice that someone claiming to be a manager of the hostel has chosen to defame me in a reply to this review. How petty. Sparklingly clean everywhere, airy and full of light, nice view of the city from the private room, knowledgeable staff ready to answer questions, very decent breakfast with fresh fruits (spectacular by hostel standard). Located in a nice residential area. Very well maintained. Amazing hostel. Beats all competitors hands down. The crowd is young and mostly European backpackers. It sort of looks like an updated college dormitory, that has a modern urban theme. Upon entering, at the first glance, the place may appear a little too youthful for you, (especially if you arrive a little dingy on an overnight Greyhound bus or an Amtrak, for example) but don't be deterred; there are some mature travelers as well, and if you go upstairs, the room, bathroom and shower are impeccably clean and very relaxing as we experienced it! A front desk staff may help ease these travelers' initial apprehension by smiling more like Californians. They are no doubt efficient in their work though, and well-staffed. No long wait like the other hostels. On bike rental: it was great, although bikes were simple ones, and maybe a little old. If you are planning a long ride, I would rent better ones from a bike shop. It's the kind of bikes that you pedal backwards in order to stop. There was also one handle brake but there is no brake on the other handle. That handle has three simple gears. It worked for us for Lake Front Trail, since we didn't mind letting -- what I find to be just slightly arrogant power bikers -- yell at us from behind ("On your left"! etc.) and pass us by at 40+mph. (Aren't there regular bikers in Chicago?) It may be nice if the hostel could offer the bikes at a cheaper rate, since not a lot of people seem to be using them. I think I paid $30 a day. Chicago is such a beautiful city to visit (amazing buildings and great popcorn!), especially around downtown. I may have enjoyed more than NYC, in a big part thanks to this fantastic hostel. A staff member told me they've been in business for eight years. I hope they will keep up the great job. A true travelers' respite. Will definitely return again. The location and building itself was very nice. I would say watch out for certain staff members, and staff is everything for a professional place. An employee named Joaquin seems kind, until you have a concern.... After, what I thought was a calm interaction, he spoke with another employee to confront me and immediately threatened to kick me out or "shut up". I'm not sure what kind of message Joaquin conveyed to that employee but it did not warrant an immediate threat of eviction. I was able to speak with the GM who was genuinely kind, . Thanks to the GM we came to a compromise. My concern is based on Joaquin who obviously lied about the interaction we had. I thought our interaction was friendly as we both parted with smiles. Until I was given an ultimatum with an aggressive tone from the other employee. Although unfortunate, I think it was necessary to showcase Joaquin's nature, he was absent during the resolution of this.... I'm certain the other employee would not have approached me in such a manner if Joaquin was true about our interaction. I enjoyed the building, I just hope the business would consider this review and investigate Joaquin's intentions further. read more

SO CLEAN! Great price and location. The staff is friendly and they offer a bunch of breakfast in the morning as well as lots of fun activities. This is clearly managed well. Best hostel I've been to across the country! In case you are coming with a car, plan to rent a parking space from them because there is literally NO STREET PARKING anywhere near here. So don't even think about trying to find any. I am staying in an 8 bedroom all female dorm and surprisingly have had no problems with the bathroom being shared! Crazy. My first night here a bunch of friendly Brazilians were dancing and partying in the main room and invited me to join. Very friendly, fun vibe here. The only thing I would recommend are bringing earplugs if you are a light sleeper like me. Lots of doors slamming and the people in my room getting up and leaving/coming in -- typical for any hostel. I like that the common rooms are far from the dorms which makes the party noise too far away to hear. I am staying on the L level ( the basement) and love it. Very clean and also the air conditioner/ heating unit is excellent. read more

Stayed here on the last weekend of July, 2011 and is easily my favorite hostel. I've stayed at several in various countries (South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia) and Chicago Getaway Hostel takes the cake! The staff were very friendly and welcoming when we arrived. I had ordered a parcel and had it sent to the hostel prior to my arrival and they promptly gave it to me upon checking-in without me asking. The hostel is very modern and features a good sized dining area, piano room, lounge, patio, and kitchen. In the kitchen, you can use one of their bins to store your food & drinks in their large refrigerator. They serve breakfast and the selection is your usual cereal, fruits, toast & coffee but the food is fresh and of good quality. Stayed in a private room with a half closet and no bathroom. Our room had it's own Air Conditioning unit in which the temperature could be regulated to your liking. My only complaint was the closet had smell of fresh paint so I wasn't to inclined to hang my clothes in there. Many of the guests were mostly of the 20s & 30s range but there were a couple of families staying there as well. The location of the hostel is also really great too. Only minutes from Lincoln Park & North Avenue Beach with about a 20-25 minute bus/subway ride to downtown. Overall, a fabulous hostel in a fabulous city! read more

The location is nicely situated in a residential area where it's peaceful, but is also located just a block from Clark St. which has a large selection of food places to eat, and around 10m walk from the CTA. The lobby is kept pretty clean, and yet has a casual feel. Most of the time you can find an empty seat at the lobby. Of all the restrooms, most are clean except maybe the 1st floor one, which is a plus since you can get more exercise by going to the 2-4 floors. The kitchen also stays fairly clean, and I would say the free breakfast is pretty typical of the other hostels I've stayed at. They offer eggs for your own cooking, as well as fruit/bread/bagels/cereal/coffee. Beds don't come with curtains, and the bunk beds are a bit squeaky. So if you're sensitive to noise/privacy be sure to bring an eye mask and ear plugs. I wouldn't recommend the private rooms with bathroom, since it makes the room feels smaller. Instead I'd opt for the non-bathroom private rooms. WiFi seems to reach most rooms, but it's not guaranteed. Also if you're planning to game here, ping is slightly bad in some areas, but mostly okay. Atmosphere is very friendly, and there's a piano and guitars for use. STORY TIME: The one night I visited a 10-room male dorm, it had a smell so foul, it would even make Milpitas* jealous. I chalked that up to a fact of life when stuffing 10 people in one room. However the next day when the cleaning lady came in she was like "oh lawd, what is this funk in this room?!?!" I was told the female rooms smell great. My only theory is that cologne is made not to syngergize well with other colognes and that causes microscopic chemical reaction battles in the air that make the most musty and rank smell known to mankind. However the second day it smelled not as bad. I'm assuming the cleaning lady fixed it up, or that the funk has killed my sense of smell/taste... do not trust my yelp reviews on food after this. First time staying in a hostel in America, and wasn't sure what to expect. This place exceeded all of my expectations. Highly recommend it and would absolutely stay here again. Incredibly clean. Room was spotless. Very minimalistic, which is all we needed and what we expected. We spent very little time in the room (which is how any vacation should be, right?), so it was perfect. Cool lobby, lounge area. We arrived at about 1:30am and people were playing beer pong in the kitchen area. Full kitchen if you want to cook, free daily breakfast and free weekend BBQs if you're into that. (We preferred to try to the local Chicago restaurants, though). Very laid back staff. Extremely helpful and full of local knowledge. Giant room in the back to store your luggage after you check out. Location was ideal. Cute Lincoln Park neighborhood has the true Chicago feel. Walking distance to Clark St., which is filled with bars and young 20-somethings. Short cab ride to many of the main attractions. Or walk if you're up for it! That's what we did. Overall, clean, great staff, perfect location, and affordable price -- this place was too good to be true!! read more

I stayed here with three friends, we are in our early to mid twenties. We booked a private room: four beds and a private bathroom. I was the most skeptical of staying here and thought we should have stayed in a hotel. I am happy to admit I misjudged this place. The good: The room was fairly spacious, and very clean. The bed was more comfortable than I was expecting. Air conditioning was nice and cold which was great. Shower was large, had good pressure and was nice and hot. The bad: The room only came with one desk chair, one or two more would have been nice. The toilet seat refused to stay up, which was surprisingly annoying. The lobby and common areas of the hostel are very nice. There are couches, and chairs for people to read or use laptops on. Public computers if you do not have your own, and Wi-fi that worked surprisingly well. There is a really nice patio/outdoor area with plenty of seating and a grill. The common kitchen was very large, clean, had plenty of seating, and vending machines for food, snacks and coffee. They do free breakfast every morning which was great. There is also a pool table, which was a nice ice-breaker for meeting other guests. We met several people from France and Australia during our stay. The Chicago Getaway Hostel is an excellent place to stay if you want to explore Chicago on a budget. You can't get more space, comfort or amenities for the same money. If you plan on spending most of your time and money actually enjoying all that the great city of Chicago has to offer; I highly recommend you stay here. You won't regret it. read more

I went to visit Chicago for the weekend to attend a concert at Lincoln Hall and needed a cheap place to stay for the night. I found the Chicago Getaway Hostel and was extremely impressed with its modern look and great location! For the price you definitely can't beat it! I got a room with two beds and a full bathroom for $62.00 and the stay also came with breakfast in the morning. It was very clean and the employees were very nice. The hostel was located near many stores, bars, restaurants which you could easily get to by walking or riding a bike. I will definitely be booking here the next time I travel to Chicago. read more

I stayed here while travelling through to Green Bay. Since I stayed on a Wednesday, I received a discounted rate of $37 for a 8 bed room with an on suite bathroom. That, coupled with the $15 parking I paid at a nearby garage made this place a cheaper option than most hotels. The hostel itself is in a stunning neighborhood. No "sketchiness" whatsoever. The front staff was very helpful and the hostel itself is laid out very well for interaction. If you've never stayed in a hostel, the idea of sharing a room with strangers might freak you out. It didn't with me. Breakfast the next morning was awesome, and I left full and ready for my drive up to Green Bay. I will be staying here again. One quick note: if you stay here over the weekend, there is a two night minimum and the price jumps to around $55/night. Also, bring shower sandals. read more

This hostel is about three blocks from Fullerton Red Line. I stayed here twice, traveling through Chicago, about a week apart. I paid only $18 for a top bunk in a 12 person dorm. For $28 I was able to park until 3:00 the next day, just out the back door. The showers were nice, bathrooms clean, no bad smell in the place; attractive, friendly, home-like atmosphere. The bed was comfortable, clean smelling; the dorm was quiet other than one person cough-barking for the first hour, and I had a good sleep, like a home away from home. Breakfast is included and they have a nice variety. Excellent oatmeal. Helpful people work here. If I ever stay overnight in Chicago again, I hope it will be at this hostel. read more

Stayed here based on yelp reviews, and I was not disappointed. The hostel is in a great neighborhood, is conveniently located within a 10 minute walk of a major Chicago public transportation hub, and IT'S CLEAN! They were in the middle of a remodel, but I can't wait to go back and see what it looks like. Helpful staff, too; very willing to answer questions. I would absolutely stay here again. A note on the hostel experience: I do want to mention after reading a couple of other reviews (that didn't give a 5 star rating) that this is a HOSTEL, not a HOTEL. If you are looking for a posh B&B or spa service, you may want to look elsewhere. As hostels go, though, this one is great. I have stayed in hostels all over the world (Europe, Africa, the Middle East), and compared to other hostels, this place ranks at the top. What a great, affordable place to stay! Really clean and well organized. I stayed in Chicago for a weekend and stayed here 2 nights. The place had everything I needed and could ask for. Even if, like me, you had never stayed in a hostel before, this place is a great introduction and definitely sets the standard for future hostels. Located in a great neighborhood, centrally located in the north side, close to the Brown Line and Lincoln Park, as well as Clark St, the main thoroughfare of the North Side. Bathrooms: A+, considering the horror stories one hears about hostel bathrooms. Bedrooms: I stayed in a shared dorm with about 8 sets of bunk beds, and slept on the top bunk. If all you need is a clean bed at comfortable room temperature, and don't mind sharing a room with a bunch of guys, then this place is for you. There were more than enough lockers provided so if you feel like it, you can store your crap in these. The beds were made every night and clean linen and towels were provided. Plus, news of the place is spreading so there's always a bunch of people from all over just milling around, so it's easy to meet people. Great hostel situated in a nice neighborhood. It's close to the train station, and only a short walk from Lincoln park zoo. The rooms were nice and clean, staff is friendly and the breakfast was great! Wifi is free. They have events for the guests like biking tours and pubcrawl. There are also fridges in the kitchen, where you can place you own food. Definitely recommendable. read more

The hostel looks great, and definitely went beyond my expectations with the public space offered. The pool table, computer and TV lounges are awesome and give you a chance to really relax and begin and end your days in total comfort. The kitchen one of the largest I've seen in any hostel the world over. Of all the hostels I've been to in North America, this one's the best in overall value, amenities, and staff friendliness. The location is also the best of all worlds when it comes to experiencing the best Chicago has to offer. Jason was especially friendly and helpful, particularly given the fact that I was a last minute check-in. I'd been locked out of a friend's house where I was staying, and called Chicago Getaway fully expecting to be told I wouldn't be able to check in because it was 2 am. If it hadn't been for Jason's understanding and warmth over the phone, I would have been out in the cold - literally. read more

Woa. Talk about an awesome alternative to the usual hotel stuff. I'd stay here for a more vibrant traveling experience any day. I've met a lot of great people here and the place is modern, comfortable, and right in the middle of a cool neighborhood. I recommend going to Lincoln Park Zoo as its free, or renting one of the hostel's bikes and riding the lakefront path. I must also add that the hostel staff really helps create an enjoyable place, as I found them the type of people I wouldn't mind drinking with. Really clean! even the shared showers. Staff is REALLY! friendly made us feel welcomed. Loved the room small but not too small to feel like you're in a prison. Slept like a baby, bed was comfortable, bed was so clean and smooth, i wanted to take their blankets home with me. read more

I love this place! I would recommend anyone travelling to chicago to stay here. The hostel is located in a wonderful safe area, close to all transportation. The staff here are all amazing and very helpful. The hostel itself is in the process of being remodeled, and is very clean and modern. There is kindof an old 40's deco feel to the place as well, but has all modern conveiniences, big screen t.v., computer access, grand piano, and patios. The rates are good, definately cheaper and more fun than staying in a hotel. I made friends here i will have all my life. If i ever need a place to stay in chicago again i would definately come here. read more

First day here and the hot water is broke. I can't take a shower. What a pleasant experience...

Me and my wife stayed here this past weekend. The staff super friendly and helpful. The rooms were okay. The beds were uncomfortable. The hallway on our floor smelled like weed. Im pretty sure this a great place but it's not for us. This place in my opinion is for folks who are in their twenties. People who are in college type of place. A lot of people were drunk. A girl was so drunk that she ran into a door. Our food was marked with our names and still someone ate our food but it was our last day so I wasn't mad. read more
