Mature citrus plants needed a house call due to a plethora of falling leaves. We required a house call.

Mags, General Manager made a house call today on our two, sick citrus trees. I have had "Gertrude" and "Fred" since they were seeds (end of 2016) and just recently Gert (and Fred to a lesser extent) started to shed leaves every night. It was scary to walkout and see the curled up, brown tinged leaves laying there and the bare(ish) branches. Mags came in and examined them and the soil and asked and answered a lot of questions. They were professional, empathetic and knowledgeable. Mags had offered a zoom visit, but we feel that it was well worth the money to have them come out. Mags aerated the soil to loosen the snug dirt and trimmed a branch which was miserably plowed into the ceiling. We feel this is the beginning on the road to better health and plan on having them come back in spring to replant our Snake plant (which has gotten a bit unwieldy). Very happy with our visit!

Also, it's cash only, and make sure you bring your own boxes to carry your plants. The volunteers are really nice and helpful here. Prices started at $3 for the smaller plants and went up from there. The organic green house not only offers children's and adult classes, they also have a wonderful community garden which is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm. it is also the only teaching greenhouse from the Chicago Park District, located within the grounds of Kilbourn Park. They seek to connect people to nature, teach sustainable gardening practices, and promote fresh and healthy food to people of all ages through garden-based programming. Kids can enjoy the Garden Buddies program for toddlers, plus the Harvest Garden and Eco-Explorers programs for youth. Adult gardeners can attend a continuing education series and other workshops sponsored by The Friends of Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse. Although the park is one of the smaller ones in the city, they have a soccer field, tennis courts, playground, basketball court, Kilbourn Park also offers different after school programs for kids and a summer camp that is quite good.

They do have a good sized field house here, with programming for a variety of age ranges, so it's worth checking out the CPD activities schedule. There's lots of green space, but also baseball fields, tennis courts, and a nice sized playground. The playground, too, serves a nice range of ages. But what I liked most about this park was the greenhouse and outdoor natural play area. There are places for kids to sit for various activities that take place here, an outdoor kitchen, and a large greenhouse. It's called a "teaching greenhouse", and is unique amongst Chicago parks (at least as of 2026). There's a program called garden buddies aimed at toddlers and I wish I lived closer to be able to have my child participate in it! There's also a plant sale each year. If all that weren't enough, an orchard--the first in a major metropolitan city in the US!--was planted in 2008. Apples, pears, and more--including the paw paw, an unusual, native Illinois fruit--grow on these trees. Currants, berries, and more have also been planted here. I'm excited to keep an eye on their events.

It definitely feels extensive and organized with sections for soil, different climates/plant needs, and grade of plant. The indoor plants I've bought here are mostly doing great if a little neglected from my own care. We ended up planting some of the outdoor plants too early, but the quality was great overall. Given the late last frost date here, I would just wait to buy outdoor plants in the spring. The parking lot is extensive, and they have several community events as well as opportunities to host birthday parties for any age. Staff were really helpful and efficient at the register.

I by not means have a green thumb so I appreciate all of the fun facts and tips and tricks they were posted on now to keep some of the plants alive. When you first walk in, you see all types of soil snd. Will notice different sections of the store. We stumbled upon the furry friends, hamsters and guinea pigs as we were looking at the cacti's, then that led to the bird aviary where folks can donate to interact with the birds. There are so many of them. We then heard a waterfall and walked towards it and got stopped in our tracks by buddy the turtle next to the koi pond. It's literally like Narnia here. We walked through all of the plants and found the party room. So fun to hear that they do events and folks can paint their own pottery before planting in them. While walking around none of the staff really interacted with us so we didn't really know where to really find what we were looking for, but that's okay because the adventure was also really fun. Overall a great experience, highly recommend for anyone looking to build their garden.
