I inherited an antique Morris chair from my mother which originally belonged to my grandparents. It's kind of dated, so what? It just needed a good cleaning. Plus, the original cushions were awful paisley, so old and worn they were useless and thrown away... so the chair sat cushion-less for a while until I stopped in at this shop on the north side. Glad I came in. The team was very knowledgeable about this type of chair. They offered honest suggestions and recommendations on what works and doesn't but still listened to my wants. I had my own fabric (but the shop has tons of fabric choices) and they were able to create beautiful box cushions within a few weeks. We had two projects done here this year, an old-fashioned, wooden-framed sectional couch which was restrung (we kept the old fabric on it for now) and a chair which was completely reupholstered in its first update since the 1960s. The chair was complex and included a skirt and two cushions. They did a wonderful job and answered my many questions along the way; we brought in fabric swatches we were considering for the chair and received feedback that helped us make the right choice. I feel great about my new/old chair, which looks spiffier than it ever did in my lifetime, and now we can sit on our couch again without falling down through it. Communication was good, prices were reasonable (especially for restringing the couch), and they also offer a transportation service for oversize furniture so you don't have to haul in your own couch (we tried and failed to manage ourselves). It is nice to have this kind of skilled labor in the neighborhood! I did not even know you could get a couch restrung -- we originally asked if they could reupholster it completely and learned that restringing is an option. read more

Do you enjoy disclaimers on a receipt stating that you're only responsible for paying 1/3 of the final price upfront, but then being charged 2/3 of the final price without your consent? Do you enjoy working with businesses that changed their name when they moved to Rogers Park to disguise the fact that their previous name (Julian Marc Upholstery & Drapery) was inundated with negative reviews on Yelp? Do you enjoy scheduling a time for installation, only to be told the day of the scheduled installation that they ordered the wrong parts, and then not hearing from them for two weeks? Then, when you call for an update on the rescheduled installation, they get mad at you for not working around their schedule? Do you enjoy working with businesses that cancel your order because they don't appreciate their customers getting upset for late and incorrect orders? Do you enjoy working with businesses that are so disorganized that they are on the computer, the phone, texting, and trying to find information in piles of paper--all at the same time, when they're supposed to be taking your order--and then having that business call you a liar when the order you placed turns out to be inaccurate? Do you enjoy being promised a full refund for a cancelled order within "5-7 business days," not getting the aforementioned refund on time, then being accused of lying (again) when you--and the fraud department of the bank the credit card was issued through--say you have not received the refund, and then when you finally do receive the refund, it's in small chunks and not fully refunded until 24 days after the order was initially cancelled? I returned his call, and before we began I asked him to identify himself and his role with Chicago Upholstery & Drapery. He refused and said that he was coming to my home to speak with me in person. I asked him not to do that, he then proceeded to read off my home address, saying that he knew where I lived. I told him if he showed up I would call the police and he said, "go ahead." At that point I ended the call. I needed a wing-back chair re-upholstered this February (2020). I chose Chicago Upholstery after several good reviews on nextdoor.com. By the time I chose material and arranged for pick-up, however, the covid-19 pandemic was starting to surface. They picked up the chair from my garage (so no need to interact which was just becoming practiced). Several months later I called. They apologized, but explained they had switched to making PPE SUITS and MASKS and would get back to upholstery as soon as possible. I was very impressed and told them not to worry about the delay, there were more important things to do. When I finally got my chair it was beautiful and well made. I then realized had forgotten to ask them to make arm covers for it. Dale, the main person I dealt with, after delivering the chair made another individual trip and brought the coverings to my home (at no extra charge). Such a nice experience with such good people. Went here on a recommendation from my kitchen designer and probably had the worst customer service ever. In fact the owner couldn't define the concept if it hit him in the face. Waited nearly 6 weeks for custom banquette cushions and 2 days prior to my promised delivery date I get an email saying that they needed to come out to measure because it wasn't going to be right. 2 days before it was promised??! Seriously? So when I finally get the promised cushions delivered to my house, it's the wrong one! and the delivery people call the owner and gets the owner on the phone who then proceeds to talk to the customer(yes me the customer) in a condescending and defensive tone saying "well this is what you ordered and based on the email ..." Luckily I took pictures of my fabric choices otherwise this business apparently was not taking any responsibility. Later I get a call from the storeroom manager who also blames me (the customer) for changing delivery dates? Seriously? That doesn't even make any sense. I even ask, are you kidding me? He then tells me ok you didn't change the date, we did. Talk about no concept of customer service--to be argumentative and blaming the customer once again. He certainly learned that from the owner for sure. The true test of a good business is managing and de escalating a bad situation; and this owner certainly does not know this. No business is perfect and I get that. However, it's how you respond to customer situations that is the true test of good businesses. This is not one of those places. DO NOT GO HERE! I finally got way better service and product at Calico Corners! Checkout my review of this place along with pic! Buyer Beware and make sure you use a good credit card that will back you up with disputes with this business owner. Go to Calico Corners for custom fabric and upholstery instead.
