I must say , I cheated and read other reviews before going to this restaurant. I will start by saying I prefer dark meat chicken to white meat chicken so that is not an issue for me. This is a small restaurant, significantly smaller than I expected it to be.And even though there is a renowned chef behind the recipes , don't forget , this is a chicken sandwich shop. All of that being said I thought the Chicken Sandwich was delicious.I had the 360, which was a nice amount of spice.The duck fat fries were thick cut , delicious , crispy and perfectly seasoned. The waitstaff was helpful and kind. But I do agree with other reviews that the parking is minimal.So you may need to park and walk back to the restaurant. I first heard about "Chicken Hawk" back in early 2022, so after years and years of delays I kind of lost some hope of it actually opening, and to what fanfare? What base was lost in promises? That hope was kept alive by semi regular pop ups showcasing bits and pieces of their menu. Those were so well R&D'd and executed anything close to that would rally any doubter. Fast-forward 2025 and having known it's former digs I knew it was small, but it's even smaller than I imagined. Space is lost and saved in what they both built and didn't demo/reno. Birdman is as good as I remember, soft brioche potato bun, think Martin's if you know burgers. Duality of sweet from the pickles and bun, and the tang of the slaw and kim chi sauce (comeback is just fry sauce on steriods, and it already has a chili sauce in it). The bird is fried well and crispy, the thighs are portioned, marinated and seasoned. 360 is just below a Nashville hot and the 720 is just above one. The fries are excellent, but if your going to say duck fat fries, fry it in duck fat, don't just finish it with it. The $2 upsell is a marginal gain in flavor/experience. I'd have preferred a buttermilk ranch over yogurt, what are we counting calories here? Get the chips and dip and use the comeback sauce on the potatos and use the french onion creme fraiche to dip the sandwich. I found it lacking a little umami. While poke is a staple in many places, the Bluefin is a bit much, considering there wasn't any masago or variety of toppings, mostly sauces. We have become very used to the chipoke style poke bowls. At that price I'd expect otoro, but it's akami, but at least it's local. I'd pay $18 for alabacore instead of bluefin. no shiso like on the bo ssam? Sunomono pickles was the only low spot imo. It wasn't so much the flavor, ingredients or presentation. Just the price. Easily the most marked up item on the menu. Umeboshi and the vinegar cut heavy flavors, cucumbers a decently crunchy, but I gotta know how the price is almost much as the Birdman? Eyefries and Kona bowl seem to be all sauces and garnish, but no substance. I'm glad I'm not a vegetarian, but if I were I'd have to eat the bo ssam with each salad to scratch someones hunger. Come here for the drinks by the reknowned bartender Nick. His palate is refined and creative, even having diet cocktails (sans alcohol for those of us now in recovery). Japan Air and Bones Brigade are worth it, even without. As someone with decades of professional experience I can generall know what works without the booze. Service is great, very on par with Chef Bach's lineage. Ambiance is definitely daytime or early dinner, as we get into longer cold nights it's not a place I"d bring a date I'm trying to impress, just a place I'd bring my gf or a foodie. To those that think Tony Hawk is actively involved in things, he's not. Staff is amazing and a treat for the area. Decor is bright and whimsical albeit kitchy. Bathroom sinks are modelled after swimming pools. Parking is what you might call "exclusive" seeing as there are more area for seats at the bar than there are parking spots. Please ditch some of the tables and make bar seating. I promise returning people will have 3-5 drinks and make way more money for you than a first and only time families at tables. It seemed odd to open in Encinitas seeing as Crack Shack is nearby and is well established at a lower price point. I think this place would be great for just drinks if it had the capcity or was less food focused. It's a solid sandwich and fantastic most everything else, but some odd items that are also out of touch in pricing. the long awaited, much anticipated CHICK & HAWK, a joint project from Michelin-starred chef, Andrew Bachelier, and local skateboard legend, Tony Hawk, is finally open. drove down Leucadia Blvd dozens of times to check if they'd unlocked the doors yet. took an eternity to get the permits handled and pay off the inspectors. have you seen "Nonnas?" pretty much how I remember the process from my opening-new-restaurant days. Liquid Death Mountain Water blows goats. way too minerally and metallic for my taste buds. premix carbonated water from the soda machine and a lime wedge, and I'm good. the SPICY DUCK-FAT FRIES were GBD but not very spicy. I don't particularly care but it seems like an over-promise and then under-deliver situation. why do restaurants call something "spicy" then cater to the lowest common denominator? there's a "not spicy" duck-fat fry option so they don't need to cloud the issue making promises they don't intend to keep. the menu's limited. the concept's well executed. the cocktails and food tasty. the place was packed the afternoon we were there. everybody was enjoying themselves and generally having a grand, old time. nearly twenty bucks for a chicken sandwich (before tax and tip) seems pricey, but if you can get past the sticker shock, THE BIRDMAN (Nashville inspired Hot Chicken Sandwich with Napa slaw, pickle slices, and comeback sauce on a potato bun) is really good. offered at three different spice levels depending on your heat tolerance. no new restaurant can live up to the level this place was hyped to, but CHICK & HAWK comes close. read more

We can be quite forgiving of the cost when the food really hits the spot and Chick & Hawk fits neatly in that category for us. We started with the mushroom bossam a tasty dish of 5 lightly battered/fried whole matsutake mushrooms and 5 accompanying shiso leave wraps with a peanut sauce and pickled slaw. Delicious. We were happy to see the sunonomo pickles were great (non pickled cucumbers) and came with a different but interesting sauce. Next the Seabird was an excellent seared fish sandwich, generous in size and tasty with its sauce and avocado. The Birdman was also exactly what we wanted in a hot chicken sandwich (great at 360 heat), well balanced, good pickles. Went here today with my Wife for Lunch on a Saturday. Luckily wait wasn't to bad and we got seated pretty quickly. Its tight in there, hard to walk and you get seated next to other people like your sitting at there table and inclined to spark conversation or overhear there convo. But really it wasn't a big deal. The hiring person did a stellar job as each employee was helpful/friendly during my interaction. I ate the sandwich in about 12 bites couldn't have taken more than 90 seconds to down. Zero complaints, it was stellar and great tasting. Ill be back to try a beer and unique mixed drinks. I have stopped at that Starbucks off the 5 at Leucadia over 100 times and have never ventured west. So many dining options in the area. Parking is inconvenient but it adds to the experience. Neat interior and appreciated the outdoor seating. Was that location an old Taco Bell? I did notice several comments about the prices. I was surprised that it is a sit down place instead of order at the counter and find a table. The menus are busy, feel disorganized, and are slightly hard to read. Even a dill pickle would've helped instead of a sweet one! Service was so meh. One cute, kind short-haired brunette who took the time to smile at the baby and say hi. (Thank you!) The Bad: Parking is pretty bad, one handicap spot and about 7 actual spots. Think about parking elsewhere. The phone number didn't seem to work so it was difficult to judge how crowded it could be. You can grab a reservation via the Google page. The Okay: Value is a little bad. 18 for the sandwich alone could be problematic. I think they're a little late to the chicken sandwich game as well. Staff is still a bit fresh but I'm sure they can work out the kinks. Other: If you know anything about this place, the absolute song and dance that it took to open this place was massive. Delays, permits, regulations, everything. I really hope it does okay only because of the effort it took and at least the perception of Tony Hawk being attached to it (popularization of skate, skate parks, the games even though there are many others like Mullen, Bam, Muska, Burnquist, etc) However, I wouldn't go back unless I was in this area just due to the parking situation. I was extremely excited to try this place -- my wife and I both were. Maybe we had high expectations since it's a Michelin-star chef, so I was expecting the best chicken burger of my life. But for $18 plus tax, and then paying separately for fries plus one Coke, the total came to $65 with tip. Very expensive, so I thought: okay, it better be worth it. We tried. The fries were good, but nothing extraordinary. Then... the burger. So disappointing. Honestly. My chicken came with a lot of fat. Unless you're one of the lucky 8 cars to park in their parking lot or are doing take out, just go elsewhere to eat cuz it's not worth going on a journey to find a parking spot. You can't park across the street in the adjacent parking lot, you're not allowed to park in the nearby residential culdesac or streets, as a result, you're forced to park on Vulcan which is completely full of cars and you gotta go on a walking journey like your Frodo and Sam in Lord of the Rings making your way to Mount Doom. But if you can't find parking on Vulcan, then your only other option is to park on the 101 which is even further!! Like I said, unless you're one of the lucky 8 or doing take out, it's not worth it. 2) Get bigger tables or get smaller flatware!! Holy smokes! We had two plates for our sandwiches and one plate for fries, making a grand total of 3 plates -- and the plates were hanging off the table about to fall off! Chick and Hawk has been on our radar for several years and finally opened in early November after a long period of planning. We came in with high expectations, as Chef Andrew Bacchlier--formerly of Jeune et Jolie and the creative force behind the excellent Atelier Mann has never disappointed us. Admittedly, I'm not usually a fried chicken sandwich person, but the Birdman was solid overall. I ordered the 720 spice level, which delivered a noticeable kick without being overwhelming. While the chicken was slightly rubbery toward the center, the exterior crispiness was spot-on. The addition of kimchee and pickles helped round out the flavor and added a welcome contrast. If you're driving like we were, factor in that the Leucadia location is not particularly easy to park. There are only a limited number of spots, which fill up quickly, and nearby neighborhoods are clearly marked with no-parking signs. That said, service was fairly quick--we ordered our sandwiches to go and didn't experience much of a wait. All things considered, I would likely return at some point. read more

I had the wonderful experience this weekend of trying out Chick and Hawk in Leucadia, CA. I was staying on the beach at my cousin's spot in Neptune and was pleasantly surprised by how close it was walking to it! That's a good thing too because this spot is small and the parking lot accommodates for its size ( it's tiny) I was greeted both times by the mgr, Martha who in addition to having incredible hospitality skills, also has a bad ass taste in music, having curated a hell of a playlist for this spot! I was pleasantly surprised by the reggae/ ska/ SoCal surf skate tunes. So upon being seated I met Maddie my waitress who was also so sweet and accommodating I asked what she liked there and she recommended the Seabird Fish sandwich. Boy was I glad I listed to her. This was the absolute best fish sandwich I've ever had!!! Think McDonald's filet o fish on steroids- and not the cheap ass roofs you buy innTJ, but the ones that come from your LaJolla Dr. Itbwas a huge piece of Albacore deep fried in a tempura like batter with a slaw on it and Yuzu tartar sauce. god damn was it fire. Loved it so much and it was so filling I'm glad that I didn't order the fries...that came the best day when I went back!! Second day I tried the Birdman perfectly spicy and it's fabulous as well. Don't get me wrong when I say this, but it's a huge piece of chicken with a lot of toppings with the slaw, comeback sauce, and pickles it was a messy Sando. The spice was great and the duck fat fries were good, they weren't great. I asked the waitress if they were supposed to be crispy and she replied "yes" so maybe that was a slight miss, but the spice on the fries was similar to the spice of the sandwich. The comeback sauce paired well with the fries too. Next time I come down to Leucadia which will be soon- I'm back on the Seabird train. When we told our server they said "its thigh meat, people either love it or hate it" It was basically all cartilage and gristle and the texture was stringy and gross like when you leave chicken in the freezer too long (they claim non-frozen meats) and im not doubting they don't freeze but i eat at least 3 chicken sandwiches a week on average and this is the only chicken sandwich restaurant i will never return to. Hands down worst chicken sandwich of my life. Flavor was okayish, but was a textural nightmare. How tf you gunna charge $18 for a chicken sandwich and not have breast meat on the damn menu either. Been waiting for what seems like years to check out Tony Hawk's new Chicken Restaurant in Leucadia. Finally rolled by, and wow, way too many hurdles for slightly elevated fast food. First, there is no parking. Like 10 spots for the whole restaurant. If you catch someone leaving take a spot, otherwise you have to park somewhere in the mud along Coast Highway and walk up the street, across the railroad tracks, through very pedestrian unfriendly terrain. It's best to drop your party off, cruise the roundabout East on Leucadia Blvd and then park so only one person has to walk. Second, the place is much smaller than it looks. There are only three tables inside the restaurant. Two six tops and a four top. And if you don't have six you will be forced to share the table with strangers. Fine if you like that sort of thing, not so much if a family of snorting, coughing, loud rudies gets seated with you. There are oddly tiny bar seats along a frosted glass wall to the side of the kitchen, and a few tables outside in the patio, but they are neither cozy, nor comfortable for dining. Third, the service seems novice. Our server was rough, distracted, and disinterested in service. We had to ask for everything. We had to ask for silverware (which was tossed clanking into a container on our table rather than handed to us) and ask for water. We had to ask the manager how to pay because we were done and didn't know how the restaurant works. She said haughtily, "Your server is right there." And pointed behind us. Which was true because the restaurant is the size of a medium sized livingroom. But when you have to ask for the check you know someone isn't paying attention. Especially when there are only three tables. Since I'm numbering: Four, the design of the restaurant is graphically cool and built with what looks like quality construction. (I like what they've done with the place). Some skateboard flavor touches but not overdone. Old memorabilia from Tony Hawk's career, but nothing special. You'd think they'd have lots of merch as it is technically a celebrity chef restaurant, but they only had a few shirts stuffed into a rack that also serves as a busing station. Because the place is sooo small. The food was fine. Overpriced. But clever in presentation. The chicken comes in three heat ranges. Which is fun. Hot is hot. Be careful. The homemade ketchup got mixed reviews at our table. I thought it was fine, but the kids wanted "real tomato ketchup, Eddie." Sadly Chick & Hawk doesn't stoop to Heinz. Even though it would go perfectly with their stock fries. All that said, if Chick & Hawk was in a bigger space, with easy parking, and had staff that made it fun we would go back. With all the hurdles we experienced, a return trip is pretty unlikely ... unless we have friends from out of town who just must check out Tony Hawk's restaurant. Because of all the hurdles, the outlook for Chick & Hawk in this location seems grim. Makes me wonder if they're running this location as a concept before rolling the brand out to more locations. Really really good! We loved it! We went at lunch on a Sunday afternoon, and we were seated right away. It was busy, but not super packed. She mentioned they do take reservations, which I wasn't aware of. Good to know! Cocktails are excellent, and the food is fresh and delicious! Birdman 720 was perfectly spicy, and the duck fat fries are good to share. I love a simple, well executed restaurant with great service and quality food! Can't wait to come back ! read more

Not a chicken sandwich kind of girl but this place was DELICIOUS! Came here with my boyfriend for a date night and everything from the fries to the drinks were fantastic. Our waiters were so kind and constantly checked up on us. The vibe was so relaxed. There was chill music playing. We came on a chilly night but were sat by a warmer which was nice! Went with my family, had the spicy duck fat fries, the Birdman and Seabird sandwiches as well as some cocktails and a beer. The fries were very good; the chicken sandwich (did 2/4 heat which was spicy but not too much) was juicy inside and crunchy outside, and I liked the flavor and the dusted seasoning. The fish sandwich was a surprising stand out and honestly one of the best like it I've had in a while (did the blackened seasoned version). Cocktails were good too. Food is awesome, and paying $20 for a chicken sandwich isn't a shock these days, I literally got a very similar (but not nearly as good) one a week ago for $25. And that place wasn't in an area nearly as expensive to run a business as this location. Only issue is make sure to check your to-go order. Didn't get my extra side of sauce or added cheese on the sandwich, which was a pretty big bummer. read more

Our food was delicious! We were lucky enough to dine during a soft opening and they definitely have it nailed down tight. The Birdman is delish. Spicy enough at Level 1 and if you are a no-spice person recommend going sans spice. Accompanied with the duck fat fries and they were so good! Chips & Caviar are excellent as were the mushrooms. The cocktails did not disappoint - overall an awesome dining experience. I grew up in Cardiff back in the 80s, so I especially loved the decor. Great job!! read more

Fun spot, in a great location near the PCH on Leucadia boulevard. Went during the soft opening weekend and ordered to go from the back window. Ordered the Birdman chicken sandwich and duck fries. The sandwich was fairly big and really good. The fries were pretty mediocre and kind of crazy they were $12. The birdman also was $18, which is on the higher end read more
