Their food is to die for. They give you enough food, that you typically have to get a take-home box. The last time I ate there, I ordered some chicken to eat later. Boy, was that ever good! I also ordered some potato salad and coleslaw. Both were very good. The place is usually packed, because their food is so good. But their waitresses are operating as quickly as they can! There's a lot of farm animals running around on the walls. They have the place nicely decorated. I believe there are three or four large chickens standing around outside. read more

Sunday AM during the Church rush. Wife had a BLT with fried green tomato's on it. Menu stated $9.50. Specials board stated $11. I pointed this out to the waitress and She changed it to the lower price. Later someone changed the bill scribbled back to the $11. Just let it go and paid the bill. Tipped the waitress and out the door for the last time. If money is that tight I can only assume what goes into the meals.. These are the faces you will not see again this year. read more

Tried calling in an order. Was put on a brief hold that then had me waiting for 10 minutes as I heard multiple new orders and side chatter from staff happen. Completely forgotten about. We visit Hernando each winter and stop for breakfast at Chicken King a couple of times. The place is clean, the service is great, and the breakfast is very good at a reasonable price. It appears to be a local hangout as most people seem to know each other. i would highly recommend. read more

Called here yesterday 11/01/25, and asked if they were hiring. Lady on phone says, you never know come in and fill out a application. Take wife there, with 25+ years experience in restaurant business, next morning to do just that 10/02/25. Wife waited patiently in line and asked older lady cashing out customers if they were hiring? VERY RUDELY, lady says,"Oh honey, Sunday morning is not the time." Very rude, condescending, unprofessional and in a down right nasty and belittling way. My wife then asked if she could just get a application then, the lady responds, we don't have any applications. So why tell me the day before to come in and fill one out??? I said previously, my wife has been in restaurant business for 25+ years and actually managed a restaurant for past 10 years. She has never heard of Sunday not being a time to apply for a job, nor myself. If a business is open, why not? Said business can be just as busy on a Monday morning, or Tuesday, or any day for that matter they're open. A business should be courteous to its community no matter what day it is and not feel the need to belittle those out here trying to better themselves by seeking employment. Some are struggling as it is and to be shamed by a business for seeking a job is just very unnecessary and down right nasty, disgusting, unkind and inconsiderate. After seeing this place on our meandering through Florida, we decided to finally give it a try. Hubs ordered four pieces of fried chicken with baked beans and macaroni and cheese. I ordered the turkey with mashed potatoes and fried squash. Every thing was good except for the macaroni and cheese. It had a odd taste and it got left on the plate. We've only eaten there once but it was really good! The fried squash was amazing. Summer squash lightly dredged though flour the fried to golden brown. The sweet potato fries where really good also. There must have been 20 of them hanging out on an empty table and the hostess sat someone at the table and watching them all fly away when these people sat down just about made me sick. We've been frequenting this place for about 10 years. It's a bit worn on the outside, but don't let that fool you. It's changed hands a couple times since we've been coming, this stewardship is probably the best. The food is down home cooking. The chicken is amazing and the sides are lovely. Service is very good. It's not a large dining area, and it is quite popular, busy times it can fill up quickly. Breakfast is good as well. I recently had a Chicken Fried Chicken smothered with brown gravy, whipped potatoes and southern style green beans. It's one of the best things I've ever eaten. Biscuits were flat and tasteless. Chicken was cold and soggy. Home fries tasted like old plantains and looked like they were made yesterday and got rehydrated and warmed up. We had a party of 6 and ordered fried green tomatoes, chicken quesadilla, club, Buffalo chicken wrap, shrimp basket with Mac and cheese, a breakfast platter, and a seafood platter with fish, shrimp, clams, crab cake cake, and hush puppies. Friday's special is AYCE fish. Everything was delicious and extremely reasonably priced. This appears to be a spot for locals, but we were welcomed out of towners. A customer recommended the fried squash (under $3), but we were stuffed from the large portions we had already received. They closed at 2:45 pm. Not sure if they serve dinner hours. Worth stopping in if you're anywhere nearby. Next time I will order chicken livers with fried okra and cheese grits. read more

I have eaten here 3 times over 2 years. The last 2 times because they were the only place open nearby. It always seems to be crowded. The service has always been good, and the place is clean, and attractively decorated. But here is the big but, the food has always been lousy! I mean practically inedibly lousy. The first time I went my dinner roll was moldy. The food then, aside from the moldy roll, was forgettable. That's why my 2 subsequent visits were by need only. I was there this week, got one of the several daily specials, and had another lousy meal. Potatoes were cold, and the short ribs were overcooked to the point of being completely tasteless. Even the canned brown gravy was cold, and wasn't much help. That's it for me, 3 strikes in a row. Next time if I have to fight the 200 to Ocala to find a place open, it's a better alternative to another awful meal at Chicken King. read more

Chicken King is my new favorite breakfast food spot for anytime breakfast. I actually have not tried anything else on the menu. Their biscuits are big and fluffy, scrambled eggs are perfect (not to done and not too raw), bacon is the perfect thickness with nice and smoked flavor, and their fried potatoes are delicious. They will bring you crunchy or meaty bacon as requested. Their prices are reasonable and their service is very friendly. They offer margarine or real butter. I love this place and was there 2 days in a row and would have gone a 3rd, but the internet indicated they were closing soon for the day. read more
