Moist rotisserie chicken. No i'm not just saying that. I was surprised how perfectly moist it was. Bones falling right out of the chicken. Good seasoning, though not mindblowing. Sauces are good compliment. Love how the spicy green sauce not only has spice but a little saltiness, a little flavor. I've had plenty green sauces with just spice, no flavor. so this was a pleasant surprise. Sides, I had fries and a side salad. At least they try. I could see other restaurants flat out buy cafeteria style fries and not even chop their salad, but both here were good. The fries were like red robin steak fries. The salad had a nice take on a ranch dressing, good stuff. When it comes to peruvian chicken in baltimore, this is a solid 4.5, only because I sort of felt like something small was missing from the chicken rub as well as the crust of the chicken wasn't the crispiest (these had already been cooked, sitting in the heating rack) but it was still amazing. This place is a local secret in Baltimore. In highland town it is an unassuming peruvian chicken restaurant nestled between a liquor store and a furniture store called "colortyme". You walk in and get in line to first choose whether you want a 1/4, 1/2, or whole chicken, then whether or not you want some of the plethora of sides that they offer (get the fried rice and plantains). The chicken is messy, loaded with flavor and authenticity, and is cheap for all the food you get. It's great for a group of friends to share a meal. I prefer the dark meat to the white meat, which is a little dry for my taste, but it's still the best peruvian chicken you can get in baltimore. Check it out! read more

I've Been a fan of Chicken Rico's for a few years now. My first taste of their rotisserie and I was like, oh OK this is how it's done. Chicken falling off the bone tender and juicy, skin seasoned and addictive. Enjoyed with the red beans and fried rice you are left satisfied and planning your next excuse to be dab smack in the middle of highland town. The place itself is a cafeteria styled service with everyone ordering and moving toward the register which you grab your tray and find a table or take it with you. They have sandwiches and other items to choose from but if it's your first visit do the rotisserie chicken you wont be disappointed. Yummy in my tummy! One of the 1st places I had lunch since I started my internship early September- Open 7 days a week 10-10 with lunch & dinner specials so it seemed like a steal! Well call be a robber because after my first bit of chicken i just wanted to jump over the counter, grab the whole tray and beeline to someone waiting in a car hopefully with the engine running! lol The chicken is THAT tasty. It was time to go back over to Highlandtown (hon) and update this review for Chicken Rico - and it's not worth four stars at all. More like five. Or ten. Or twenty. As usual, the actual ordering process was a headache because of the communication barrier - apparently I speak a little too fast, so we all kept going, "What? What?" in our respective languages. Eventually we managed to convey that I wanted a 1/4 chicken meal (with 2 sides - in my case, fries and coleslaw - and a drink) and the boyfriend wanted a chicken and beef burrito. Easy enough. For some reason, the burritos always, ALWAYS take longer to make here than anything else and I have no idea of why. It took at least 10 to 15 minutes - perhaps it's because there's extra prep involved, I don't know. It mattered little to me, though, because in the meantime I'm polishing off my meal. The chicken remains flavorful, with extra-juicy skin - I swear, I think the skin is the best part of it. The fries were thick-cut and really good (though I think it would have been a bit better if they were crispier, but that's just me). Oddly, though, the highlight of the meal for me was the coleslaw. I swear, Chicken Rico has THE best coleslaw in the city. I don't have a clue of why - it's just sweet and crispy and all-around delicious. I actually wanted to jump back in the never-ending line just to take some home - luckily I have restraint. And I tried the Inca Kola once again (I don't know why, I thought it too sweet the last time I had it) - the diet version was a LOT better. LoML reports that his burrito was huge, tender, juicy and delicious. It sure looked good from where I was sitting - I may have that myself for the next time we're here (and there will be a next time). The 1/4 chicken meal, at 6.50, is an absolute bargain. I was a little torn rating Chicken Rico. I pick up chicken here quite often, and it is good. But do I compare Chicken Rico to everything in Baltimore or do I compare it to other restaurants in other cities? For Baltimore, it deserves at least 4 stars. The chicken is nicely spiced and never dry. I highly suggest getting some green jalepeno dipping sauce to accompany the meat. The sides are only good some of the times. The plantains are sometimes rubbery and unless the yucca has just been fried i think it is safer to go with the french fries. The rice is sometimes greasy, but is alright. Avoid the salad. I love their case of sodas many from latin america. I kind of hate Inca kola, yet find myself getting it every time because it reminds me of an old friend that used to drink it by the two liter bottle. It is definitely take out only, although be prepared to have your car smell like chicken for a few days. read more

Following other Yelpers advice, I ordered the 1/4 chicken, plantains and rice combo and the only regret I had was not getting 1/2 a chicken as I was craving more of this succulent smoked meat. I first tried Chicken Rico during a catered work lunch. I was blown away by how tasty the chicken was and how delicious the sauces were. However, after going back a few times, and after trying Cabanita's Chicken in Fells Point, I think Chicken Rico is merely average. The side dishes are just not as fresh as Cabanita's and the chicken is not as tasty. Unexceptional but inoffensive chicken/sides for a fairly low price in a cafeteria like setting. I've been to this Chicken Rico a few times. It always fairly busy here, unlike the location down town. The location downtown is always deserted and it looks like the food has been sitting out for awhile. Here no matter what time I come it's moderately busy to full on busy busy. The line goes by fast. The chicken is crisp and juicy. The spice blend is pretty consistent across the chain. A half Chicken platter with three large helpings of side dishes is more than enough for two people and it's a little under 9 dollars. They have these caramel filled powder sandwich cookies that are insanely delicious. I can't remember what they are called but they are literally my new favorite thing. The parking is ok. It's located on a busy street really close to the South East Anchor library. It is probably going to be more of a hassle to find parking right after school lets out during the school year. Got some take out after hearing my coworkers rave about the place for years. Got the half chicken and three sides. Rice and plantains, because that was what everyone else was getting. And the steamed vegetables to add a healthy element to the meal. The white meat was a little dry, but the dark meat was excellent... soft, tender,falls off the bone. (However, it's not as good 4 hours later). The green spicy sauce also goes really well with everything. The rice and plantains was pretty good. Surprisingly the vegetables were actually very good. Sometimes I get really hungry and I want food. Usually food means CHICKEN RICO. I seriously have made friends by bonding over how delicious Chicken Rico is. I love the Whole Chicken with the two sides -- (ALWAYS the plantains but yucca fries are good too.) Yucca fries fresh out? So delicious, I'm drooling thinking about it. I don't really know how to explain to you how good Chicken Rico. The plantains are fried gently and just so sweet. The chicken is moist and flavorful (roasted on a rotating pike). I usually have tortillas on the side and make mini tacos with my chicken. Or I take the chicken pieces. The sauces are good (the yellow sauce isn't very spicy but the green one is delicious and very spicy and clean). I will say that 90% of the time the chicken is AMAZING but I have been there before and the chicken was a little dry. Maybe overcooked? If you go once and the chicken is overcooked and dry, don't take that to heart! It's only happened once or twice but your tastebuds will just thank you!! read more

I had a wicked craving for chicken, and Cabanita's Chicken - highly recommended by my roommate - closed down. So I drove 15 minutes to get a whole chicken + fried plantains + coleslaw from Chicken Rico, and I was not disappointed! I agree with other reviewers that this is a great & cheap place to come if you're eating in a group. Or, you can buy a whole chicken for takeout, and stuff your face in your car because you can't wait. Ahem. The chicken was extremely flavourful, even the white meat! The meat falls off the bones, and comes with two kinds of sauces. The green sauce is spicy and more watery, and definitely gives the flavour profile a kick. The yellow sauce seems to be mayo-based, and for me made the whole thing too rich, but still great. I ordered extra sauce, but honestly, didn't end up using as much as I thought because the chicken alone was so juicy. Plantains were everything you could ask for from caramelized, gooey, starchy carbs; and the coleslaw was appropriately sour. I may have enjoyed my food in my car, but the dining area looked clean & relatively empty. Atmosphere is fast-food-esque, so coupled with the fact that this chicken should be enjoyed with your fingers, probably not a first date location. When you walk in, it feels almost cafeteria like with high ceilings, tile floors, square tables surrounded by chairs. You line up and place your order. Choose how much chicken, (quarter or half) and then your sides (veggies, yucca, plantains, rice, beans, etc.). Grab your beverage from the cooler - they even have Inca Kola. It was packed when we went! In my attempt to rate it solely for what it is I give it 4 stars, with comparison I'd give it 3. The chicken was flavorful, and I feel bad comparing, but it's just not quite as good as Sardi's in Beltsville (theirs is a bit more moist and spicy.) Still, it's reasonably priced and it's the only Peruvian chicken I know of around Baltimore. Skip the coleslaw... Beans and rice were just ok... I prefer the traditional black beans (these were kidney). I will say, this is the first time out of 4-5 attempts, that I've ever enjoyed plantain! Definitely give that a try! The peruvian spices sink into the chicken so deep that even the breasts are rich and flavorful. Juicy as well! What a precious gem I have been ignoring for two years, as a resident of good ol' Charm City! I'm just sad that I missed out on all of the Peruvian yummyness. We called to ask for refund and the acting manager, Sierra, asked us if we still had it and if our order up driver could bring it back so she could inspect and give us another. I've had the Peruvian Chicken from this location on 2 seperate occasions and it really is outstanding! The chicken is so very flavorful and perfectly cooked. I'm not a breast girl but I had some and it was moist and tender. I love the green spicy sauce. It is definitely spicy but it adds a good kick to the chicken. I have tried the location closer to my home and I found it to be different and not as good. I have never actually visited this location, but rather have had the food at parties. Food gets a 5 star. The chicken is so well marinated and flavorful all the way through. The meat is not dry, the breast could be a little moister but it can't be helped. Fried plantains are the bomb! Fried yuca is also tasty. Fried rice is nothing special. However, my friend found hair in his plantains on two occasions. So i can't give this place a 5. That is just gross. They should really wear hair nets or something. Price is pretty good for teh amount of food you get. I got the half chicken with 2 side meal for $9. They charge you $1 extra since i got plantains. This is one of my favorite spots in baltimore. The place is located in highlandtown. There's nothing glamorous about this place- it has plastic tables and plastic chairs. A little bit on the gritty side. A very hole in the wall feel to it. The food is amazing. The chicken here gets a lot of attention....but in my personal opinion, their loma saltado is to die for. It's an asian inspired Peruvian dish- it's a beef dish with tomatoes peppers and onions. Below it are fries which had soaked up all the deliciousness of the sauce. All this is served with some rice. So. Good. Their chicken is amazing as well. It is a bit salty but so juicy. You can dip the chicken in the sauces which are delicious as well. The sides are so good- I'm a big fan of their yuca fries, and plaintains. Food here is so cheap. The quantity is generous. Can't rave any more about this place. I'm pretty picky about chicken - it's a really tough meat to get right - cook it for too long and it gets tough and dry. It's almost an art to get a perfectly cooked chicken, so I rarely order it. If I do, I always get dark meat since that does not dry out as fast. I was sick one day and my boyfriend bought me chicken from this place. YUMMY!!! The rotisserie chicken has a herb-rubbed and crispyskin and the meat (even the breast) is nice and tender. The skin really makes the meal though. You also get a choice of two sides - I like the rice with sausage (almost the Peruvian version of fried rice). Their ceviche is also great. They only serve it on the weekends though. They have a version with just rockfish and one that is a seafood medley. I would get the medley since the calamari and fish is just cooked perfectly in the juice. Skip the squid though - it gets overcooked and becomes tough. The atmosphere is great - very homey and casual with lively music videos displayed on the corners of the rooms. Don't let the red plastic trays and styrofoam plates/containers make you hesitant to stop into this gem! Three words that will change your life: Peruvian charcoal chicken. There was a line all the way to the door when a friend and I stopped by (always a good sign), but the staff quickly ushered people through the line resulting in a wait only long enough to read the menu and decide on my selections. The chicken was flavorful, moist, and literally falling off the bone. The plantains and yucca sides were delicious, but the plantains were addictive and I simply could not stop eating those delicious golden nuggets. We received both a green (spicy) and yellow sauce which were both delicious. Finally, when you get to the register, you will be more than pleased with the prices for the quality and quantity of food you receive.
