It's a money mill. They waste way too much of my time trying to save their time. Last visit I sat in a room for nearly an hour so they assigned a different doctor that could see me after 1:15 minutes. Today I was 10 minutes late according to them. I would NEVER accept an appointment at 325pm. 4 pm was appt. I wrote in my calendar while standing there. The care is okay just be prepared for an 1.5 hour appt. I won't be back. The last three times I had appointments they want to fill out a bunch of bs to obviously to kill time while you're waiting, waiting, waiting. If you have time to waste that's the place for you. Their billing department is so screwed up. They don't send you an itemized bill "we don't do that". But they will ask you for money when you get there, then send you an email that your payment is passed due. More than once we paid for the same bill. When they quoted our out of pocket expense they said $600.00, then when we get to the advanced eye care center where they do the procedure it was $1309.00. You have to pay first. Dr Ransbarger performed eye-misalignment surgery on both my eyes and i am so grateful to her. I had heard a lot of surgeons will only take on clients under 30, as the success rate is very low in older people. Since I had just turned 60, I thought there was no possibility I would be a candidate for the operation(s), but Dr Ransbarger didn't hesitate. 100% think Dr. Ransbarger is very knowledgeable and lovely and great with the children, but every single appointment is awful. It is very rare that anything is on time. I'm writing this from the waiting room where we've been sitting for an hour and a half. With a 4 and 5 year old, that means they're going to get cranky and will not cooperate with the appointment because by the time they actually see her, we will have been here for 2 hours. This is not a one time occurrence, it happens more often than not and we have been coming here for 3 years. If you have the patience for it, then come here. If you have a tight schedule, then skip it. read more

Where do I begin. Terrible customer service from the front desk to the eye glass center. I gave it three tries then gave up and changed eye centers. I waited in excess of an hour each time. I was given a number like I was at subway. Finally got called back and it was just for one test then returned to the waiting room with my number to wait again. This happened with each test I had ( over four) I was diagnosed with cataracts and the Dr I saw treated me horribly when I did not schedule surgery with him right then and there. I told him I wanted to do some research as this was a big surprise for me and needed some time. When I called to schedule a pre op appt with him a month or so later , I once again was treated like cattle in the wait room, given a number , then when called back a young man tried to repeat the tests from my prior appt. I advised him I was only here for a pre op appt with the Dr and already had all of the tests at last appt. He acted like a petulant child when I told him I would just wait for the Dr to see me. He said I needed to go back to the wait room and " he had no idea how long I would have to wait to see the Dr " ( even though that was what my appt was for ) I sat in the wait room for an hour again then got up and left and never went back. I won't even go into the mess at the eye glass center but left without glasses after finally getting a copy of my prescription. ( this took three people ) When I wanted my records transferred to the new office , they made it very difficult to do so and I had to call and follow up on it twice. ( after needing to go in person the first time ) Don't waste your time going here .... I tried to find one positive thing to say about this place but can't. My new place is wonderful. read more

Dr. Ben Gilber of Chico Eye Center is an outstanding physician and very easy to communicate with. My eye care over a number of years has has been exemplary. During a routine office visit, he discovered that I had a heart problem. He sent me Enloe E/R. It appears that he has solved a long term debilitating problem, previously not diagnosed. I am on a path to recovery. All thanks to Dr. Gilbert who is a kind and caring person. read more

Chico Eye Center is a cross between the DMV and Welfare office. I waited over an hour from my scheduled appointment then asked the receptionist what was going on (the place looked like the waiting area at DMV and the local welfare office...lines of people). The receptionist then directed me to another waiting area where at least 8 people were still a head of me. This was going to take at minimum another hour before I could see the doctor for a simple routine exam so I left. I strongly do not recommend the Chico Eye Center unless your comforable with being treated like one in a herd of cows. read more

I had not been to the new office on the Esplanade ,but have been to the old office many times, so i stopped there on thursday, December 14th about 3 pm and wanted to make an appt, well this office has a big fancy entry parking area, no close parking spots, but anyway, i walked thru the glass doors, , and there were 8 or 9 people standing there all beside each other waiting their turn, to get to the counter, I asked, are you all waiting to be waited on?, they said yes, there were 2 office girls, each one helping someone., i asked is this the line, they said yes, then another person walked in, after 5 minutes or more, we all still stood there still waiting, and i had an elderly person in my car, so i walked out, and left, this is unacceptable, to be this unorganized, and no one being waited on, from this group, or approached by any office people, read more

Speaking just on two different employees: Sierra (?) and Sky. They were both so kind and welcoming. Sierra has always been so kind and patient when working with patients at the front desk. I take my daughter in as well, every experience with Sierra has been great! I believe she has been with chico eye center for a few years and they are lucky to have her. This just keeps getting worse. After my review, I got a response from "Jana" encouraging me to "call the administrator." I called the office and was advised that Jana is the administrator and not available, but I can try to call back later if I want to. That is almost comical since one of my complaints is that they do not call back. After many phone calls about my headaches, increasingly bad vision with no improvement and concern something was very wrong, I was told to come into the office. Some techs poked at my eye and pretended to do tests for a while. The doctor came in for less than five minutes to scold me that I was not giving it enough time and that I was legal to drive per DMV. I cannot see road signs even during the day and night is impossible. When I told the doctor I did not feel safe driving at night or really even during the day, he responded that then I shouldn't drive. No one checked my blood pressure which seems odd with my continued throbbing headaches and my history of hypertension. This is all very strange. I am becoming very very depressed and fear I will not be able to keep my job. I have not been able to go to the gym since I cannot drive in the dark. I have a follow up appointment next week but am not feeling optimistic at all, expecting to be dismissed and treated like who cares if I can no longer work, drive or have any quality of life. read more

I recently changed eye doctors in Chico, mostly for convenience and a closer proximity to my house. My first appointment with Dr Houlihan warranted an immediate visit with cornea specialist, Dr Liston to review a pigment discoloration on the white of my upper eyeball. Within 3 weeks of my first visit, I had eye surgery for a precancerous growth. The biopsy result was a benign melanosis. I am so grateful and thankful. read more

This post is about the RX LIGHT ADJUSTABLE LENS. While I am not telling anyone to not have these lenses placed when having cataract surgery, I want to share my experience with them. On January 19th of 2021 I went in for surgery for cataract surgery. after talking to Dr Houlihan about these lenses, I was excited for the possibility of not having to wear glasses. Mind you, my cataracts were in no way obstructing my vision, but she made these sound so good. What she did not tell me was to not have to wear glasses, the lenses would be mono vision, which means one for far away and one for close. I had tried mono vison in the past with contacts and I would of not gone that way because I knew mono vision did not work for me. The surgery for each eye is one week apart from each other. The first surgery went well, but the second one I noticed right away something was different. It was quite painful from the moment I woke up. I told her this and she said to give it time, but it never changed. She attributed it to dry eye, which wasn't a problem before the surgery. After trying many different eye drops, some prescription, and some over the counter, nothing changed. My vison is horrible and changes from day to day.Because of this, it is hard to have the right prescription for glasses. Some days are actually good, for a short period of time because of the dry eye. But most are bad. I think she really tried to help, but gave up because she didn't know what to do. This was a new procedure for this office. Her answer to my problem was to get a cute pair of glasses. These lenses cost me almost $7000 and I still need to wear glasses not only for my vision, but because my eyes now fight each other. I have headaches at work where I am on a computer all day, and can only do the things I loved to do for a short period of time. ( reading, crafts, taking pictures, painting, going to the beach) I also have had a huge floater in my eye with the far away vision for a couple of years, so this causes my vision to be highly impaired at times. (she knew about this) My reason for this review is to tell you to ask a lot of questions. I thought we had asked enough. If I had to do it again...first I would wait until my vison was impaired, second, I would of had standard cataract surgery. I was only 62 and like I already said, the cataracts she said I had were not noticeable to me. I didn't even have the huge different in brightness of colors like people do when they have cataract surgery. My reason for only 3 stars is the fact that I was being charged an additional fee on top of the cost of these lenses every time I came in. I feel because she didn't know how to help me, she just washed her hands of me. Because of this, I will be finding another doctor to go to. I will tell you there is not a day that I don't feel like gouging my eyes out. read more

I set up an apt with them and they said my full book would be $40. When I got there they said my bill would be $95 I paid it. Now today I got a new bill for $40 more for a total of $135. You can't take them at their word and you can expect your bill to continue to go up after you pay them. read more

Chico Eye Center has become a horrible place. I have been a patient of Cico Eye Center for over a decade and they have grown so much that the last eye exam I had, I was forced to come back twice and have it redone. I could not see with my new glasses. This time around I came in at 7:25 am and nobody was there to let me in. There were no cars in the parking lot, when I called for a reschedule they made the excuse that the people who were scheduled at 7:45 were all allowed in - the problem was that I was the only person parked in the parking lot. instead of rescheduling me they made excuses after excuses and tried to make me apologize to them. this is bad business practice and I will be reporting them to the BBC. read more
