I was walking around downtown Ketchikan and stumbled across this place. It said "Mexican food and the best pizza in town". The weirdest combination ever but gosh do they deliver! Truly remarkable and such a gem. It's a very small restaurant with extremely tight seating. However, the service is so friendly and fast. Now the pizza is great! I am tagging along with my friend for a work trip and was looking for some Mexican. Chico's was really close to our hotel and within walking distance. The restaurant is small and clean, very causal. There was only one other person there when we arrived and we were seated and served chips and salsa when we sat down by a very nice lady who seamed like the owner. The menu was kind of funky, they not only served Mexican but pizza and gyros too. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and carne asada. Food came out on a piping hot plate. Like holy mother of Jesus hot. The carne asada wasn't what I was expecting, the steak was more like gyro meat than steak - it was good, just not steak. My friend said her enchiladas were very good and hit the spot after a long day of flying. Both our plates came with refried beans and rice - which didn't have much flavor at all. All and all, wasn't bad, but wasn't anything to write home about. Seems like a nice local couple that runs it. read more

We came here on our shore day during a 10 day cruise because I hadn't had any Mexican food for a couple of weeks and was going through withdrawals. Just to note - while we were there for lunch, they did not give us the menu with lunch specials so I guess they don't have them anymore. My hubby and I both had the two taco combo. It was kind of expensive and the food was just okay. The chips seemed store bought. The salsa was good but a little peppery. The main reason I didn't give a higher rating is that the menu says they will charge you for extra salsa. This meant I had to skimp on salsa on my meal, which was not a good thing. Still, I'm glad we tried this place and might return if ever in the area. read more

Great Place! I live in Texas and recently spent some time in Ketchican while on a two week trip to Alaska. I ate plenty of delicious seafood while ther but was missing my Mexican food like I'm used to. Then I stumbled upon "Chicos". Ooh-Lah-Lah! Glad I found it. The food is fantastic! I worked in food service for a long time, it takes a LOT for me to complain, never mind write a review. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had. For starters, the table was swarmed with fruit flies. Service was extremely slow despite us being the only table in the restaurant. The "chips and dip" came out as store bought tortilla chips with melted shredded cheese on top, lettuce, grey guacamole, and black olives. We ordered beef and shrimp fajitas. The beef was not fajita, but some kind of stir fry meat, the shrimp were incredibly overcooked, and there was an assortment of random vegetables with the fajitas like cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and orange slices for some reason?? The marinade tasted of pre-packaged generic Asian food that you might get from the frozen section of the grocery store. The tortillas were listed as flour on the menu but what came out was corn. All of this was topped with more grey guacamole. There's no antibacterial soap in the bathroom, just a giant bottle of dish soap. We finally asked for the check when I found a hair in my shrimp and a fruit fly landed in my beer. We sent back full plates and no one asked if anything was wrong. $90 tab and we had to stop at McDonald's on the way home because everything at Chico's was inedible. read more

If you want authentic Mexican food in Ketchikan Alaska, Chico's Mexican Restaurant is the place to go. Coming from California where Mexican food is abundant, I did not expect to find better tasting Mexican food. Start with the guacamole and chips. As a tourist, finding a dinner spot in Ketchikan is not exactly easy. Once the cruise ships depart, the town seems to pretty much shutdown. So one rainy night, I found myself wandering in here for some food as it appeared open. Everyone inside knew each other and was having conversations with each other over the booths. And a few of them would it's get up and go into the employee only area and just help themselves to whatever. No one greeted me when I walked in. I just took a seat and waited for awhile until the one server came over. Not exactly welcoming. It's a really small place and kind cute and quaint. It's got a nice ambiance to it sans the unwelcoming aspect. Soda comes in cans, no refills. They have some beer and wine too. Menu has plenty of options - variety of Mexican dishes and pizza and pasta. Quite the odd mix. Chips and salsa are complimentary. Neither the chips nor the salsa were good. I settled on a beef tostada as I wasn't hungry enough for a full meal. It's was...barely edible. In fact, it was mostly inedible. The beans were so gross and nothing tastes fresh. If I hadn't been starving, I'd have barely stomached the few bites that I did. So while the one server was perfectly nice and it's a cute place, the food was well below average. Odd. We'd read good things about Chico's so decided to give it a try. We've eaten expensive seafood for days so figured we'd go low budget and eat something different. We come from California where Mexican food is prevalent. We both ordered enchiladas. I had pork, hubby had shrimp. The chips were straight out of a bag but had been warmed slightly. Just enough to tide us over til our entrees arrived, certainly not a full basket like back home. The salsa was decent. The rice and beans were tasty. My enchiladas were good. Hubby's shrimp tacos were coated with the strangest yellow cheese sauce we've ever seen. On the plus side, the entire plate of food was hot when it arrived. I have never in my life been so disappointed by a business. Never. I cannot put into words how disappointed I am with the service I received today. My best friend and I decided to stop in to a locally owned and operated business. We always do our best to support on island locals. But, sadly not only was the food not what we anticipated, but neither was the customer service. I ordered fajitas for my boyfriend and i both, to go, and when looking at my order I realized they put broccoli, cauliflower, and tomatoes on their fajitas. NEVER, never have i ever saw this in my 25 years of live. I informed the owner/waitress that I would not eat this due to not liking numerous items included in there "fajitas." she stated "i've served this for 32 years and no complaints" and i explained to her i was not discrediting her, just not what my spouse and i would eat. she then got angry and said "please never come back" which i thought was extremely rude. i tried to be as polite as i could be, but i will never be back. wish i could give a 0 star review. read more

This place is a little odd because it serves Mexican and pizza. That seems to be the norm around here (two types of completely different food). I was just looking for somewhere to sit and a little food to tide me over. I wish I ordered from the pizza menu, but the free chips and salsa got me in the mood for Mexican. The chips and salsa were spicy and great! I ordered the cheese quesadilla and a side order of guacamole. The quesadilla was fine--maybe a little small. The guacamole, well I had to ask what it was they had just brought me. It's a very pale green and lumpy, almost brownish-gray. I'm not sure how much avocado is actually in the guac but vegans and those with dairy allergies beware: there is definitely a LOT of sour cream mixed in with the avocado. We have lived in Ketchikan for over a year without ever having tried Chico's restaurant. On my birthday in September my hubby took me there. I am seriously a Life long customer now. The owners came out and serenaded me for my birthday and brought me cake and ice cream. I was very touched by their genuine kindness. Fast forward 2 months and we eat there all the time. We have gotten to know the owners and they are so attentive when we arrive that they already know what we drink and that we want 2 orders of guacamole. I love the fajitas. I had never had fajitas with a little citrus before having it her. I love it. It brings a new flavor profile to the dish. I have not had anything that I haven't liked. I love their pizza. This is a family owned place in Alaska. If you're expecting quick service it may not happen. Hired help failed to show and owner was busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. Worst experience! Sat down waited 10 minutes for a server to help. Had to ask for water 3 times15 minutes later we got it. An hour later still didn't have our food a waitress came up and asked for details about what we ordered. Obviously they had forgotten. Everyone around us that had gotten in after us got their food. Had to remind them again and finally received it. After Recieving it I pointed out some things were wrong but I would deal with it but something was missing. The waiter said 'oh yeah we're out' and walked away. We had to ask for the check 3 times. The first time the table who came in 45 minutes after us asked for the check the same time as us, they got it we didn't. The bathrooms were gross only had a bar of hand soap which looked dirty and disgusting. read more

My wife and I always try to find the best Mexican or Thai food in every new city we visit and have been pleasantly surprised in some very obscure places (Prague for example), and Chico's in Ketchikan didn't disappoint. I would never have guessed that there are this Mexicans in Ketchikan, but the workers were authentic and so were half of the patrons. This place has been in KTN for years, never had a bad meal here. If the place is packed the service can be slow but the food and the price can't be beat in this town. There is nothing fancy about this spot, just reliable, tasty Mexican at affordable prices. Can't vouch for the pizza but the lasagna is damn good. Enchilada plate I had was very good, not spicy but a handy bottle of Tapatio can solve that for you. Only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it is standard Americanized Mexican that you can find anywhere in the lower 48. read more
