Side of the road burger stands are a beautiful thing; an American summer rite of passage for youngins' and a treasured tradition of post-hike famish. I know my fair share of them all up and down the skirts of Utah's mountainlines, but was delighted to see that they exist in my westerly neighbor of Nevada. Apparently they fall under the moniker of "Frosty" but a rose by any other name smells just as sweet. A burger by any other title will fill my belly after a camping trip.
And so I emerged from a few days of hiking and camping. Unlike the backpacking returns to civilization, this time I was actually still a little full from the breakfast. Maple sausage, whole wheat pancakes, and berries. But when you see a cute roadside stop like this, you stop like this.
We bellied up to the window and hemmed and hawwed. I wasn't so hungry, so it would only be a burger and a shake; skip the fries. Others got fries, onion rings, burgers, and veggie burgers. The food came quickly and we sat on the side of the building under a shade screen.
This is the kind of place with premade patties, probably (?) frozen, but still ok. The burger was pretty basic, but the bacon and cheese dressed mine up. The bacon, actually, was exactly as I like it. I don't like it crisp, I want some chew. It was fantastic and they get high marks from me. Overall it was a good burger, but the money was the shake. As I've documented time and time again, chocolate banana shakes are the great measurement of shakes, and this was a great shake. Small-ish chunks of banana, just enough chocolate syrup (not to dark, not too blonde) and it was well-mixed. It was thick enough to spoon but you could melt it a little to straw it out and be happy with the suckage. They feature other fresh fruit as well, and I saw two peach shakes, I tried one, I think I was happier with my choice.
The curly fries and onion rings were both fried well. Sometimes you worry about the fry grease being old or icky, but I can happily report that today, at least, it seemed fresh and everything tasted unique and not like the last week's worth of frying. Shakes, then fries, then burgers. That's the order of preference. I did, however, see that the veggie burger was a legit burger with veggies like corn and a base of soy. I heard tell of its good flavor, and think they probably do a nice job, even if it may (?) be a frozed patty at some point too.
I love roadside, summertime burger shacks. So this is a no-brainer stop for me. Whether you're looking for your last meal before heading out for adventure, or probably more likely, looking to grab a post-camping adventure meal to shovel into your gullet, the Chilcoot Frosty will do you right. Finish it with a shake, for sure. read more
