This used to be the best breakfast in Peoria. The last 3 times I have been they have been spiraling down. I've had to send food back bc it was cold on all three trips. The waitress was aggravated bc I sent it back. This restaurant has really great food when it is hot and fresh. But sadly I think those days are in the past. Very nice looking eatery. Very nice waitstaff. I had the biscuits and gravy, which were a little different than I was used to- not exactly a "country style" gravy. Still good just different. So went to Childers the other day for lunch... ordered the chicken and waffles and instead of getting a nice piece or 2 of fried chicken I got chicken tenders....really chicken tenders. Today was my third and final visit to this establishment. The first time I ate here, I went for breakfast. The food was mediocre at best, and the service was just ok. The second time, I went for lunch, and although I found two hairs in two separate dishes, the waitress was so friendly and accommodating, I figured I'd try again. Today however, our waitress was beyond rude. I have a soft spot in my heart for servers, because I waited tables for many years. I am always extremely pleasant, and clean up my table as much as I can. I stack dishes, gather trash, etcetera, to make it a bit easier on the server. I try to understand if they are swamped, or have been sat multiple tables all at once, or if the kitchen is backed up. I am always on their side. That being said, Nicole was extremely rude from the get go, and never let up. I was astonished at how degrading and nasty she was being toward my friends and me. Maybe she was having a bad day, but it's never ok to take it out on the customer. Especially ones that are really nice and easy! I hope whatever it was that had her so upset passes quickly, and that she doesn't treat anyone else the way she treated us. read more

I've been to the new Childer's several times now an the food and service has been extraordinary each time. The place has a feel of a coastal city restaurant and has the large doors that open to the outdoors. They currently only serve breakfast and lunch, but will start serving dinner soon. It will be interesting to see what will be included in their dinner menu. read more

My first review was taken down. I met a couple friends at Childer's for lunch. When I went to pay, I was informed that they do not take gift cards anymore. I was lucky to have a credit card to pay my bill. Guess it is my loss for the money on the gift card. read more

We used to come here almost every weekend but the recent menu changes are a real bummer. The menu has become more restrictive on sides, more expensive, and they've eliminated their rewards program. We came here knowing we were going to get amazing food for a great price and now we feel like Childers is like any other restaurant chain. The food is questionable at best and every time I order I don't get butter for anything. I have to ask for any condiments that seem like common sense! My order for takeout goes through 3 different people before I'm finally cashed out. Mcdonald's is a better option for breakfast. read more

This is a delightful cafe. 5stars on the food. I was very impressed with all of the food we ordered it was fresh and tasted delicious. It is hard to find a good veggie burger in this town. I food is excellent, however service horrible. Server mixed up order, and when we didn't get our food and questioned it, she said we had not ordered correctly. Then when we asked for the order to be corrected, we waited and again did not get our food. When we questioned it she said she would was mixed up and didn't know what we were ordering. We ended up sharing the food we did receive. The server did not come to refill our coffee or our water. One time. We asked a different server for Coffee refill. , Very disappointing. Breakfast is often touted to be the most important meal, the kick off or spark meant to breathe life into your day. I'd dare to say there's no better place in the area, with no better staff to assist you. Your meal is always prepared to the upmost standard, where the only danger lies in letting your self-control go and ordering more. It's quite something to see such consistent quality from a kitchen staff, and something that I hope never goes unappreciated. It's an incredible feat to watch a sometimes overwhelmed group remain so attentive. Malorie, our go-to waitress, has always gone beyond her call to ensure there's never a lapse in quality or attention. It's very possible to write a very long winded, wordy review on her service alone but I'll implore you to see for yourself. Karsyn, Andrea and so many more round out an exemplary group of people who heighten the already wonderful experience. When this location first opened food and service was good. The last several times we've been however have been disappointing. The food is good and menu choices great but not after it's been sitting waiting on the counter for the server to bring to your table. Severs have been unwelcoming and very slow. Somehow the coffee tastes burnt due to sitting on burners too long but somehow is cold upon serving. They need insulated carafes and maybe better coffee. Check out is slow and I would prefer a self checkout at the table instead of waiting for server to bring the tablet around. Tired of giving this place another shot. read more

Came for breakfast on a Sunday. Only a 15 minute wait for 3 which was great. The decor and outdoor space is beautiful, but the tables are too close together. Multiple times I felt like servers were in my lap in order to deliver food to other tables.The menu also looks delicious but unfortunately didn't deliver as I hoped it would. The only reason we will give this 2 stars and not 1 is because we have enjoyed Childers for years, and especially that they opened in JC. When Mr. Childer is present, all runs smoothly. But when he is not there, it is a disaster. We waited and waited to be seated, and the place was not busy. Finally, they seated us at a booth that had not been cleaned up... our waitress came and apologized for the wait and came back to clean the table several minutes later. She said she was very busy! My husband ordered eggs, scrambled, hash browns, bacon and toast. I ordered eggs scrambled, and bacon- no hash browns or toast, and fresh fruit. We waited and waited There were flies all over the place. This made us very uncomfortable. Finally our food came and my husband got his eggs, watery and coddled. WHAT? His hasbrowns were a flat crispy circle of greasy potatoes. My eggs were stone cold and they sent out sausage. I ordered bacon! We were sure we got someone else's meal. She took them back and brought back the very same plate of eggs to me, that were obviously thrown back in the skillet to heat. My bacon was cold, but i didn't say anything. My husband got his order back and the eggs were slimy. And A giant stack of cold hash browns.. It was not a good meal. The waitress came out and kept blaming the "new help." She was the one that took the order and brought it out... Anyway, a young man came to the table and asked how everything was, and i told him it was a bad experience- I told him we will talk to Ed Childers about the experience, and he said he was Ed's son! He removed one of the meals from our bill. Things are very different now that Ed is not there full time! We will not be going in for a while... too bad. read more

I went to Childer's, Junction City location, for a first time with co-workers. We are all in the food industry, so while we can empathize with fellow waiters and bartenders on the day to day struggles of trying to please the patrons, we all agreed to give Childer's a second chance after our first experience was completely unsatisfactory. We visited a second time hoping for redemptive services. Alas, we were proved to be disappointed. We were not met promptly for either visit and there was nothing to make up for that fact; Our table was dirty and my spoon had the remnants of a previous visitor's food and slobber encrusted to it. I overlooked all of these things with politeness, though our server, whomever amongst them it was as we could not identify with one as they all were impersonal, was not attentive. Lastly, the orders were lukewarm, and like God, I'd just soon as spew them from my mouth. read more

Good food horrible service. The family and I have eaten at Childers on several occasions because the restaurant has great food. I have always overlooked the poor service and cramped accommodations because the food is tasty and fresh. On December 26, 2016, I visited this restaurant. During this visit, several things happened that was unacceptable, but I will only write about one to keep this review as brief as possible. When the server presented me with the bill, I paid it using a credit card. The server was using an iPad, so I could not actually evaluate what we were being charged for our meals. The server hurried me to swipe my card and sign. I saw the bill total and mentioned it to my wife. As I started putting on my coat, my wife thought that the bill seemed rather high. We figured out that the server had over charged us an extra meal. After waiting several minutes for the server to return, we asked her to print the receipt so that we could review it and make sure we were paying for what we had eaten. The server became very annoyed with us and left the table. She returned with a printed receipt and told us that she had not overcharged us for a meal. The server made us feel like we were trying to get a free meal. The server darted off so that we could not review the bill with her. My wife confirmed that we had been overcharged a meal which was about a 10-dollar overcharge. At this point, the server was ignoring us at our table. I got up and went to her to discuss the overcharge. The server became very irritated with me, and as we walked back to the checkout counter, she made several rude statements to me and then to my wife. The place was packed and the people at the door could hear her calling me and my wife names. It was as if the server was a child that got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. When the server figured out that we were not going to leave until the bill was reduced, she told my wife that "We do not need people like you" and refunded us the total bill. Horrible service aside, my wife and I did not want a refund we just wanted to pay for the food we ate. We are sending the owners a check for the amount of food that we ate. This place has good food, cramped accommodations, and horrible service. I don't think the food is good enough to carry the place with such poor service. read more
