This is a marvelous place! I took my granddaughter here on a really, really hot day when the Houston Zoo was not the place to be. Having only been to one other "children's museum" ages ago and not being that impressed; I wasn't sure how this would be. But, it's wonderful! They have so many rooms set up with remarkable hands-on exhibits that are interactive and entertaining. There is plenty to keep adult minds occupied while the kids are having fun too. My granddaughter especially enjoyed driving the real 1960-something Ford Mustang (Born to Be Wild plays in a loop the whole time you are in it). Fun to watch all of the moms rocking out when their kids were in the driver's seat! LOL! We both loved the telephone exhibit. Being 3, she loved playing with all of the phones. I had a great time finding all the old family phones (including my old Princess!) on the phone man somewhere. The farm to table exhibits were extensive and provided opportunities for play at many levels. Heck, their little grocery store was stocked with more food items than I see in some real stores! They even had more check-outs. I had a blast reading about all of the child inventors and seeing their photos that were on display in a room that had Legos, Kinex and many other similar toys to play with. There were many areas of that room where older children could become very inspired with creativity to explore new ways of doing things. All-in-all, we spent a nice, air conditioned afternoon and had a great time for 3-4 hours. I am only giving 4 stars since we did not eat there at all and that would factor in had we spent all day. But, I will say that the whole place was clean and the staff was helpful and friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves. I would definitely go back. read more

I am not a child, but my heart tells me otherwise when I'm at this museum. There is so much to explore here. The main floor only tells so much-- grip strength machines, scales that tell your height, magnets that grab oil in water and make it look like a spiky glob, invention area to make bee buzzers, kid pulley, bicycles that generate power, etc. The cutest thing I saw was kidtropolis, with its miniature HEB, miniature Niko Niko, miniature newscast set, miniature crime lab, and miniature auto shop. Go outside and there's a whole water majesty. I didn't have too much time to explore, but certainly the water and gadgets spewing and spinning everywhere was a sight to see. All around, you'll find ways to get active, including an electronic jump rope, bouldering wall, chase-the-light, and dance mania. Word of advice-- if you're a big kid like me (and trust me, I'm not big), don't climb the climbing tower. There are some steps that are so teeny-tiny that no adult should be able to wedge themselves. read more

This place is in some serious need of a makeover. I have all these happy memories of coming here as a child and really enjoying myself. I took my little cousin here when I was visiting a week or so ago, and I was aghast at the state the museum's in. There's a very disjointed feel as you move from exhibit to exhibit; some are very old and worn, and others are old and not too worn. However, there certainly aren't any new exhibits to captivate the mind. I also got the sense that a lot of the interactive exhibits are rarely cleaned; the small enclosed areas (like the miniature Mexican bus) really smell of body odor, and you can almost see the germs coating every surface. Disgusting. I don't know why they're bothering with renovating the gardens outside when they should really be spending the money on exhibits within, especially since no one in their right mind would sit around in the blazing hot sun anyway. They should come up with more original and fun exhibits for the kids or at least staff more enthusiastic people to interact with the kids on existing displays. Also, for the self-service interactive displays, they should really make sure that the supplies and tools are replenished every so often. read more

Plenty of things for kids to do, both educational and fun. I do thing it's better for preschoolers and elementary kids. The toddlers have a "Tot spot" but it's confined to a room and not as adventurous as the rest of the museum. If you want a birthday party, you have to be a member, but you get special perks like members' parties. You might want to stay away from the weekends; it gets pretty crazy. read more

This place has more than enough potential to be AMAZING! But it isn't. Mainly because they do not change or properly maintain their displays/exhibits. When you charge admission for a venue isn't that what the monies collected should go to first - keeping the place in perfect working order so people come back then worrying about paying staff members?! It's a lot of fun don't get me wrong, but it's over crowded and children running into and over one another with little to no parental supervision at all. Having fun is one thing Reenacting "The Lord of the Flies" is something else. I have watched older children that honestly have no business in the building stress things until they did break just for the joy of it. Why did I not say anything? Because in this day and age when you correct someone else's child you can find yourself slapped with a frivolous lawsuit. List are put out annually of what the best/favourite children's museums across the country are. This one has never even received and honourable mention. Like the MNSH this place could be *GREAT* but clearly the management has their priorities a bit out of whack. read more

Disclaimer: The day we went, it was "Pokemon Day" so I'm assuming the size of the crowd was excessively big for that event. Probably the only reason we went here that day was because it was included in our CityPass booklet and that it was "pokemon day". But the size of the crowd in the main building just made seeing any of the exhibits nearly impossible. I'm sure that it would be a good museum experience for younger kids or even school field trips. We went to the children's museum of Houston for their New Year's Eve party, though my kids had a wonderful time it was just too crowded. On any other day it would have been a nice museum to with tons of rooms for the kids to explore, it was never ending from supermarkets to vet clinics science exhibits and a lot of art corners for projects. We attended a birthday party here with our daughter for one of her friends. I think the museum does a great job of splitting time between party and fun time giving kids a chance to wander through the museum. It's basically about 5050, so you get to check out the museum itself which tuckered our little one out, then eat, do the cake thing, and talk with everyone before its time to go. My husband and I took our 8 year old daughter. Most of the activities are geared towards younger children. Many of the exhibitions did not work as well as several of the rooms smelled like pee. The lines for the few outdoor activities were long and stayed long due to people just cutting and no employees saying anything. Granted, 90% were teenagers who looked like they hated their lives. For our family of 3, with was $51 plus $10 for parking and we left super underwhelmed. This may be better during a weekday when you can actually walk through the building without running into a stray child. read more

This is a great place to take small children. My nephews (3 and 7) had a blast - couldn't get them to leave. There are plenty of parking options nearby. There is a garage across La Branch that charges about $9-$13 depending on how long you stay, and a surface parking lot across Binz (5501 La Branch) that charges a flat $5. If you get a chance, go to the basement. It is filled with hands-on learning stations where a kid can build a sail boat or a rocket. There is a station in the back that allows your kid to participate in a hands-on lesson with a CMH staff member. It is a great 'secret' in an often crowded museum. For those who want to fully participate, kids should wear swim wear and lace-up shoes (not Crocs or flip-flops) as they are needed for the amazing indoor climbing scape. All-in-all, this is a great place for kids. Be prepared to be overrun by day-campers and other kids. It doesn't seem to bother the little ones, but can get on the nerves of the over-18 people. read more

This is their want to go, right now, please, pretty please place and I am totally cool with that. You can literally spend a whole day in this place. There is so much to do, see and experience. Things for all ages and all educational. So parents, or aunts in my case, can feel great about handing out here all day. If you have not been before, or in a while - GO. You will not regret it. As parents, it always hard to find places for children to have fun and learn at the same time. We always like to take mini trips to places where our kids learn and exhaust the little bodies. We checked out Houston Children's Museum since we are ASTC (Association of Science and Technology Centers) which honors free admissions. They take temperature upon arrival, and gave individual bag to each child to participate in Odd Squad, Epic scavenger hunt throughout the museum. I would say these activities are mainly targeted for elementary school age children. Nonetheless, children still play all hands-on interactive activities. All employees are constantly disinfecting once a child done playing and moved on to next activities. They practice social distancing by allowing one family at a time, and disinfect first. The Scavenger hunt also leads you to outside green garden and water works area to continue finding the clues. One cool cultural exhibit is about Korea. The displays are really neat and interesting. We spent nearly 4 hours inside of Children's museum fun learning experience. read more

This was the first time that we ever visited the Children's Museum. This place is awesome! I brought my 4 year old granddaughter and they have something for every age group. The activities challenge your children/grandchildren to use their minds and their imagination. They even have a cultural area where they can learn about other cultures which is great, being that we live in a multicultural society. Outside you have the Eco Center, which is another great activity for children of all ages. I do recommend that you get there when they open. This gives you plenty of time to explore all areas. If you wait until later to go it becomes quite crowded and chaotic! The only downfall is that some parents let their children run wild and crazy without parental supervision. read more

Rarely can someone serve me coffee that I like, much yet love. However I was so please to find they had DELICIOUS coffee at their cafeteria. This is a much needed pick me up after chasing a 13 month and 2 1/2 year old. They loved the Tot Spot upstairs. We ended up staying for a meal then returning for a few more hours of play in the Tot Spot. Even when crowded, they were enjoying all the interesting activities and kids to interact with. The food was good quality and healthy considering it was a cafeteria. Did I mention GREAT COFFEE?? We decided to get the membership right away. The staff is friendly, but this place was very crowded the day we were there, to the point that many of the exhibits had stopped functioning (circuitry wires for the electricity exhibit, fuzzy toys for the tube system, and water toys outside were all in short supply). The wait for the challenge course was over an hour. However, the Power Tower is a great exhibit, and my kids spent over an hour in it, running up and down until they were exhausted. We entered using a Houston Citypass. I would recommend coming here if your kids need to still burn off some energy after the zoo or science museum. read more

I love having a membership here. There are activities for all ages, even babies/toddlers. The tot spot is a safe area only for the little ones. They can play with soft easy toys with others their age. Most other areas of the museum are for older kids, as well as outdoor area with water related activities. I remember coming here as a little girl and it's changed so much! Everything is upgraded and so well kept. I love the HEB grocery store and how even the cashier section is touch screen. It really allows the kids to feel like everything is real. There's so many hands on activities in the museum that it can really keep kids busy. My friend and I came here on our trip to Houston Texas. As teachers we were really excited to look around and see what children in other states were doing (we are from New York). When we got there they told us we weren't allowed in without a child present for safety reasons. We were so disappointed. Move over kiddos and make way for me! I took my son and nephew here for Halloween and I actually believe I enjoyed it more than they did. Having lots of little monsters run around in even cuter monster costumes was a plus. My favorite was a toddler skunk who's tail wiggled with every step! We hit up Kidtropolis, Power Play, Water Works, Ecostation, into the many little rooms of How It Works. They had activities table set up through out the Kid's Hall in front of the Cafe, and then ended up back out at the Waterworks per the kids request. My favorite had to be the Waterworks. They had a giant bowl that eventually tips over and just splashes water like a mini waterfall. There was a wave maker, and little "streams" with boats and tubes for the younger kids to play with. After 3 hours I really appreciated the many benches and shade they had throughout the exhibit. The kids really enjoyed the mini tornado maker as well as the giant light up game pad. We tried to look for spiders in the Ecostation but didn't spot any. However they did had little chicks in a incubation dome that was precious. The motion commotion was also another favorite of the kids. They've already made requests to come back again with permission to invite friends because they can't wait to show of this great place I took them to on Halloween! Much larger than the Children's museums where I'm from! Pretty impressive how much kid-friendly, kid-educational content can be housed in one place! Despite the chaos of what was seemingly hundreds of children running amuck, unattended by their parents/caregivers (of which many could be seen sitting on the many benches lining the walls of the museum, on their phones or chatting amongst fellow adults) We had ALOT of fun discovering all the Children's Museum of Houston had to offer! It totally pays to bank with Bank of America! Make sure you show them your debit/credit card(s) from BOA when purchasing your tickets! You'll be in for a pleasant surprise. A variety of rooms and floors to explore! Children can engage in many different activities that allow them to learn while having a great time! The kiddy-themed city (Kidtropolis) was the COOLEST! It's play-pretend meets a comedic reality! Children can first open a "bank account" with Bank of America. In order to have "money" on their "cards" which the banker gives them, they must "get a job" (or work several jobs) in order to get a "paycheck"! They children can choose to "be" police officers, or grocery store workers, ect, ect! Along the way they can earn "cash" or even "rebates"! They then deposit their paychecks and other miscellaneous income into their accounts via various ATMs located around the city! They then use their "money" to "eat" at the diner or purchase their "groceries"! Keep ahold of their little bank card as kiddos can use it every time they visit the museum! It also can keep track of their height and weight and other information from games they play throughout the museum! The climbing structure-maze that takes up 3 levels of the museum is straight up AWESOME! Believe me when I say, if I were smaller and more nimble, I too would have been on there, weaseling my way through the multiple lily pad-looking landings! I thought the art and craft area (adjacent to the Cafe and bookstore) was a nice touch! Several options as to what children can make! And if you sit down and craft long enough, the food next door might eventually demand your attention :) So much fun to be had, it's difficult to know where to start! I can tell you this with absolute confidence, avoid going on weekends! Whatever you do, save yourself the migraine, and pay a visit to this phenomenal Children's museum on a weekday! read more

We visit the Children's Museum of Houston at least twice a year. There is always something new for children to discover. This is the largest and most interactive kid's museum I have had the pleasure of visiting. I did not interact much with the staff aside from paying the admission fee. They are around cleaning up and organizing supplies. The parking garage is conveniently across the street. I recommend that park on the first level in a shady spot. I will be back again during the week, I can only imagine how crowded it gets as summer progresses and on the weekends. read more

I love the children's museum so much that I purchased a family membership. I have lived in several larger cities, and this is one of the best. It is fun and educational at the same time. There is something for all ages. I will say on the weekends it gets very crowded. The afternoon is usually a little better than the mornings. You do have to pay to park, so be aware of this. Came to the children's museum with my 3 year old and didn't realize that they had a cafe so after a couple of hours of playing I decided to have lunch there. I asked for a cup with a lid for my son for water, the girl at the register said that they have little water cups but not ones with lids. I asked if I could have a small soda cup for water since it had a lid and she said that she had to ask her boss. She came back and said that her boss said that we could either go to the gift shop and purchase a cup with a lid or buy a soda for $3. So after paying $34 to get in, $40 at the gift shop on two toys, and $25 on lunch they can't find the hospitality to give me a cup with a lid for my child. I'm not mad about the money so much as I am blown away by the lack of caring from the manager at the cafe. I run a restaurant for a living and have been in the hospitality business my entire life, I spend every day bending over backwards for the people that walk in the door and when I ask for some kindness and hospitality on my day off and don't get it I find it pretty frustrating. The girl at the counter was very apologetic and she clearly knew that the decision her boss made was not the correct one, seems like she should be the one making the decisions instead. read more

I have 2 small children one is 2 and the other is 11 months. We love coming here so much we got the membership! It is always extremely clean and well put together. I appreciate the workers and their constant picking up and attention to detail. We will enjoy this museum for many years to come. A great Christmas present/ birthday present. read more
