Steve and his crew delivered an outstanding service from start to finish. We had all of our old decks demolished (rot) and replaced with timber tech material as well as having a screen porch built. The work was at a master craftsman level with an eye to detail that was beyond expectations. Communication was consistent throughout the project, they asked regularly if we were satisfied as the project went along, the price was fair, the crew was timely and except for days lost to rain were there every day. NOT RECOMMENDED!!! Steven was thoroughly unprofessional when contracted to build our deck in Mechanicsville. He was untimely, inconsiderate and rude especially given the generous timeframe and the fact the entire amount ($7000) was paid in whole and upfront. I had to remind him of the original plan which required numerous corrections to the deck. He routinely showed up without prior notification that severely inconvenienced our plans. Craftsmanship was substandard and when shown that it was of poor quality reacted with indignation. Steven got a building permit begrudgingly only after I had argued with him that it was unacceptable to not have gotten one given the scope/type of deck built. Our deck still has not been finished (hinge replacement) even after numerous chances have been given to him to correct it. NOT RECOMMENDED.....HIRE SOMEONE ELSE read more

Steven was rebuilding a deck/screened porch a couple doors down from me. The workmanship was great so I walked down and asked him for a quote replacing my old rotten wood posts and rails on my wraparound porch. Steven removed and replaced the wood with vinyl posts and rails and rebuilt my front porch steps. He was courteous and no money was required until the job was finished. AMAZING! If you ask Michelangelo for a painting, you'll get the Sistine Chapel. We could not have found a better contractor to build our deck than Stephen Childress. My wife and I have wanted a deck since we moved into our new home last spring in 2014. Like most people, we didn't know where to look other than the bigger names that will quote you some substantial amount (which they did). By random act of events, Stephen came by to estimate our deck and gave us a great offer. At first, we didn't know what to expect. The only research we did was on Pinterest. We had an idea of what we want, but not exactly. This is where Stephen and his team came in and just took our idea and ran with it. I'm always skeptical when it comes to contractors and their work but Stephen and his team did an incredible job. Our family can't thank him enough because we still can't believe how great our deck looks. Here are some highlights worth mentioning regarding Stephen Childress business and his work. 1. Courteous! Stephen always let us know when he'll be coming by or if he's running a little late so there's no surprises 2. Quality of work is amazing! We received great quality lumber and Stephen "pays attention to detail." His measurements are precise and leveled on every piece of wood. 3. Screws over nails! Our deck is all screwed in place rather than nailed together. The advantage of that is security. Screws will hold your deck together and it'll make it feel completely solid. You won't feel loose boards when you walk on your deck. Screws also make pieces of wood easier to replace down the road. 4. Professional. Stephen and his team always expressed his professionalism to me and my family. My wife will update me when I'm at work just to say how great the deck is coming along and how nice the team is. She tells me they work non-stop to get the job done. 5. Great Value! Stephen offers a fair quote that was within our budget. We are definitely calling him back to build our fence. My father in-law has already scheduled him for his deck after seeing ours. I can't say enough what a fantastic job Stephen Childress did with our deck. We asked and he delivered more than what we expected. I would definitely recommend his work over major deck builders in the area. Frankly, I would steer clear of this company. I contacted Mr. Childress to request a quote for repairing my deck. He came out and gave us two quotes - one for repairing the deck and another for building a new deck. Called him back to schedule the repair work based on the quote he gave us. He balked at the amount (as if it was too low), asked me if that was the quote he really gave us (seriously?) then asked me if we could pay cash for the work. I said cash was fine. He then said he would come by one afternoon the following week. He never came. We called again and he said he would come the next week and would call the day before. He never called. Called back twice yesterday (both my boyfriend and I). Still no call back. Um, no thank you, Mr. Childress. Piss poor customer service. Oh, and by the way, when you give an estimate, stick to it. We would have paid whatever your estimate was (within reason). Not our fault you low-balled yourself. Will be sure to tell all my friends and contacts about my experience with this company. read more
