The tech arrived early and discussed a couple things with me prior to starting. The cleaning took approximately 45 minutes. After he was done, he went through a list of things he'd found and suggestions. Basically the inspection came down to "don't use this thing again". Unfortunately for us, the pipe coming from the stove was not installed correctly and was too thin, the backing material on the wall to protect against heat wasn't fire proof. The hearth area was too short and the distance of the stove to the walls was too close. He also inspected the chimney which runs through an upstairs bedroom and found that the flashing that surrounded the pipe coming through the floor was not fire proof and the pipe itself, while sufficiently insulated, needed to be enclosed per code (something not mentioned by our home inspector). Basically the entire set up is a fire hazard. We won't be using our wood stove again and luckily know now that the entire thing is a fire waiting to happen. The tech didn't offer to correct these things or suggest additional work he could do. He did the cleaning, gave a professional opinion (even though it was all bad for us) and his rate was reasonable. I'd definitely recommend Zim's and suggest an inspection of any fireplace or wood stove before using.
