Called in for an order, got a small wonton soup and lunch combo - chicken with mixed veggies and fried rice. Was told 15 minutes and sure enough the food was ready and waiting when I walked in. The place was dead, not sure if the lunch rush came and gone, but only saw the owner in the store. Typical hole in the wall joint, nothing too special. Wonton Soup - the broth was good, the wonton wrappers were thicker than I anticipated and it was bit more chewier than other wontons I had in wonton soup. It also had sliced bbq pork in the broth, which was first. The fried rice was decent, 99.99% rice and .01% veggies; could have used little more chicken powder to give some additional flavors. The chicken was good, tender and plenty of veggies to go around. I had chicken with garlic sauce from here before and I wasn't a fan.... but definitely would recommend the chicken with mixed veggies. read more

If you are looking for a clean, safe environment for your COVID-19, Chinese take-out fix, New China is your place! The entire kitchen and register space is now enclosed behind a giant plate of plexiglass. You pay through a small slit cut into it, by inserting your credit card. Your receipt is printed and placed into a two-way box. After signing, you leave it outside the enclosure on a metal receipt holder. Your food is delivered through the same box. Very clean and efficient! The food is as I wrote in my last review, although on my most recent visit the fried rice and soup were better than previously reported. New China is a typical Chinese take-out joint near Leo's Coney Island and Walmart in central Saline off State Street (across the street from the Ford dealership). Pros: Fast, the food is tasty without using a ton of MSG (I am allergic), and they are open on most holidays (call ahead to check). Reasonable prices. (And I am a cheap MF'er!) Good portions. Better soups than other Chinese places. The value picks are the excellent and reasonably-priced lunch and dinner combo plates. New China makes better food than the Chinese take-out places back home in SF where I lived for 28+ years. San Francisco is a really competitive Chinese take-out market so I am not comparing New China with some random (and only) brown-sauce place in an isolated one road town in Wyoming! Cons: Service is like talking to a stone statue. They take your order and your money and after a few minutes, give you a brown bag with your food. Straightforward. A smile or a bit of personality would be nice but they are not here to be your best friend nor your shrink either. The packing of the food to-go is suspect too: great for them but when you set the bag either in the back seat or foot well of your car, a word to the wise: DOUBLE-CHECK the center of gravity of the bag. On numerous occasions, the soups packed on top made the bag top-heavy and the bag flipped over (often to bad effect) when I touched the brakes. New China is in a stripmall next to Great Clips and the store front is narrow so it's easy to miss. They have an extensive menu. They offer the classics to be sure like cashew chicken and chicken lo mein but not more exotic stuff like honey walnut shrimp or sauteed goat testicles (just kidding!) Be sure to carefully examine BOTH sides of the extensive, small-print menu or you are going to be really put out upon discovering that like this rained-on, completely soaked fellow who ran in and ordered in a real hurry... There are tables in New China, but in coming here for nearly a year, I have NEVER seen a single customer use a table - all their business is take-out! (Constant stream, like picnic ants)... This place is pretty much your typical fast-food Chinese lunch take out place. Only about 4 tables, so definitely not recommended for eat-in. However, as a guy who frequently doesn't pack lunch, sometimes you just needs cheap, comfort Americanized Chinese food. Sweet and Sour Chicken and Pork, and General Tso's are standards, but surprisingly good and filling. Of course, deep fried goodness is rarely bad, but New China definitely gives you plenty for under $6 lunch combos (additional .50 for soup, egg roll, etc). Haven't sampled a lot more than that, but stick with the basics and you won't be disappointed. Nothing spectacular, but pretty good for takeout lunch especially with lots of small businesses in the area. Leo's and Wings-Pizza N Things are in the same plaza, but New China has pretty good food for the price. Leo's is all the same Coney stuff as everywhere else, and the Sports bar is too pricey for lunch. read more

So I almost didn't try this place because of the mixed reviews here on yelp and then on Google. But I thought I'd give it a shot. It seems that maybe the restaurant has taken notice of the reviews and has made improvements. I called around dinner time, ordered Chicken & Broccoli and Vegetable Lo Mein, and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. Showed up 15 minutes later and my order was ready, with kind and adequate service. I checked my bag in the car to make sure my order was correct (due to the reviews saying they made mistakes), and it was all there, packaged nicely in plastic containers that didn't leak, and they remembered the rice. Once home, I found out that yes indeed, it is a good bang for my buck. For a total of $15, The portions were huge and we had more than half of each dish left over when we were finished. As for the food: it's GOOD! The vegetables were fresh, and neither dish was "overly stir fried", and neither dish was greasy - seriously - none of that icky grease that lower end take-out places thicken their sauces with, that ends up rising to the top or leaking out of that stereotypical Chinese to-go box. I could see right into the kitchen, the people working, the ingredients, and some of the storage. It was very clean, fresh looking, and authentic. By authentic, I mean, all the cooks and employees were Asian. That doesn't necessarily mean this place offers what Chinese people in China actually eat. It's just that I've been to a number of "Chinese" take-out places and all the cooks are not Chinese (if you catch my drift). New China is new to the Saline area. It's hidden away in a strip-mall near the new Saline Walmart. When entering they have photos of the specialties above the counter, if you grab a take out menu it lists all of the food items. The menu items are decently priced for the large quantity of food you receive. One item could easily feed 2 or 3 people. The crab rangoon are large and you get 8, which is a deal within it's self. They give you more than enough soup and sauces. My only draw back is the wait time. I walked in and ordered instead of calling and waited about 15 minutes. As fans of China Chef (and their Mexican cooking staff!) we had grown weary of the familiarity and distance. New China is minutes from home. We will be back to try their 'Diet Specialties,' of which the Steamed Vegetable Delight, Steamed Chicken w/Broccoli and Steamed Chicken with Mixed Vegetables looked interesting enough to try. Steamed! Not fried in oil! To our dishes, the Vegetable Delight (5.35/pt, 8.25/qt) was fresh, bright and delicious with a light sauce and flattened pieces of white meat chicken (not the grisly cubes some Chinese restaurants use). The Orange Chicken (10.50 in the Chef's Specials section) was utterly scrumptious, though they are breaded and deep fried. If you can spare the dietary budget, try it (I am sure the Orange Beef is similar). For us, it lasted 3 days because of its richness. Unless you are 25, do not eat it all in one sitting. It can be tough to find good Orange Chicken/beef in this area (though Miss Saigon also has a good one). I made my own brown rice at home in advance so we would have a slightly more healthful meal. The food is overpriced for its quality, but its quality is better than most Chinese places around. The service is unsmiling, and, once you've ordered, you no longer exist until you pick up. The hot sour soup is mildly hot and hints at the sour. They use decent chicken, and too much fish sauce to try & cover for the fake crab in the rangoon. $35 for 2 takeout dinners is just too much to keep me interested. I'm always looking for new places to pick up a quick meal while out and about so when I saw New China I decided to give it a try and order carry out. When going to a restaurant for the first time I like to order something I've ordered and enjoyed at several different places. That way I have a point of comparison when deciding if it's worth a return visit. For my first visit I ordered Boneless Spare Ribs and Singapore Rice Noodles. The best thing I have to say about the meal in general is that they do give huge portions. The lids on both containers were practically bursting. So I was pretty excited to dig in. The first few bites of the bsr's were really good. Meaty and flavorful. But as I got deeper into the container it seemed like the pieces were becoming fattier and they had a kind of... chemically flavor, I guess is the best way I can describe it. It became more prevalent in the aftertaste. So what started out as being tasty and enjoyable, ended with apprehension and yuck. With that behind me, I eagerly tucked into the Singapore noodles. It was piping hot, steam had puffed up the lid, and there was plenty of food. Now I love Singapore noodles. I love getting them hot and spicy. I love the curry flavor. I love the mi fun noodles and the mix of pork, shrimp, and chicken. Love. But these noodles broke my heart. They were pale and mild rather than slightly yellow from the curry powder. There was no no hot and spicy. The curry flavor was virtually non existent. And the worst part was all of it was overwhelmed by a sickeningly floral smell and flavor. Something that I had never tasted in any other order of Singapore noodles. It was as if I was eating rose water or the tiny decorative soaps your grandma had in the bathroom. I could not get the taste out of my mouth, my nose was full of the smell, it was making me sick to my stomach. My tongue felt coated, a bit slimey, and numb, kinda similar to how I felt eating the ribs. I was dumbfounded as how this restaurant could make such a huge leap in preparation away from what has always been the standard. I only had maybe two fork fulls before I was reading to throw it all out. All in all I was very disappointed with both dishes. I still don't know where those flavors came from. MSG? Nitrates? Some unique exotic flavoring method? Cleaning liquids, like soap? To this day I do not know. Either they make the worst Singapore noodles in Michigan or they negligently used some utensil that was covered in detergent or something. Not sure what is worse. To close, I am not one to complain at restaurants. I tip well even when service is less than stellar. If I order something and it's not to my liking or it fails to meet expectations, I don't normally complain or send it back or get hostile. I chalk it up as an experience and move on. So I never did go back to complain or get my money back or demand another meal for free. Maybe I hit them on a bad night. I will say this though, tonight I have a hankering for Chinese food, and New China is not even being considered as an option. Maybe one day. Honestly I think this is my favorite place in town. What I appreciate most is the fresh vegetables that are always stir fried perfectly - never soggy; the giant sized shrimp and the array of sauces.
