First time dining in since the remodel. It's minimalist compared to its old style but very clean and the seating is very comfortable. I grew up eating Fortuna and it was by far the best Chinese restaurant in metro-Detroit for many decades. Things have changed. The food is different, but good. Not incredible like it used to be. Unfortunately, I found a staple in my meal the other day. How does this happen? Thankfully I am not a "Karen" who would rip someone apart for this mistake. Our waitress was very apologetic, but no offer to right the mistake? If they had, I wouldn't be leaving a negative review right now. The food used to be really good with great flavors. Last 3-4 times we pickup from here the food is so utterly bland that I don't think we'll order again. They're even skimping on the original recipes like Almond Chicken. Used to have green onions now that's extra so it's nothing more than breaded chicken that tastes like they used oil they just fried fish in it, batter isn't good, and the sauce tastes like flavorless gelatin. We also ordered BBQ fried rice which was drier than a desert and the pork "cubes" felt and tastes like the left the meat out on the counter for a few days. The almond boneless chicken did not disappoint! Light, crispy coating, deep-fried to perfection, served with a deep gravy. The dish is old-school and so good! This is what I came here for and it was well-worth the drive out to South Lyon! There are some great lunch portion-combos priced-right! The combo comes with soup and an egg roll. We had a couple of lighter, chicken with veggie dishes. Really tasty. The pan-fried dumplings were excellent. They had a pleasant ginger flavor with chicken and veggies in the filling. For such a small town as south Lyon, fortuna has some really good flavors going for them ... I typically order general tso's chicken and schezuan chicken and both dishes are delicious with real chicken and savory/sweet sauces with real ginger and spices ... I love their won ton soup as it's generous and warming and brothy.. Always a favorite for a Friday night stay in dinner and movie night :) Very recommendable !! read more

Absolutely awful. Like, DREADFUL. We paid $75 including tip and after going home to discover the food was dry, overcooked, and flavorless we had to drag our butts back up to the store to return takeout!!! (I've never in my life done such a thing and was very uncomfortable, but we were on a tight budget and with that money I could've gone to a nice restaurant and gotten really good food.) for that I give this place 1 star. The manager who handled the return assured us that she would pass on the feedback to the chefs and did end up refunding us for half the food at my request, so I will give 1 additional star for the customer service. read more

On our way to an event at Witch's Hat Brewing and were in the mood for Chinese. Not many other options in South Lyon, so we took a chance on Fortuna, is spite of some of the discouraging Yelps. If inconsistency is their problem, that at least left open a chance we'd catch them on a good day. And maybe we did. What we ordered--Mongolian Beef and Szechuan Chicken--wasn't great, but perhaps we just ran up against the limitations of what Fortuna offers. Neither tasted bad, but neither tasted like what I expect in these dishes. In both, there was meat, coarsely chopped vegetables and some slightly hot, slightly tangy, thick, soy-ish sauce. Not the distinctive spicing each should have. My wife said the Mongolian Beef's sauce reminded her of the gravy in Salisbury Steak TV dinners. Neither had the thinly shredded vegetables that better Szechuan places use in these. We ordered our meals as lunch combos, which included fried rice and an egg roll. The rice was OK. The egg roll would have been OK with more stuffing. Much more dough in each bite than veggies. The skin was cooked crisp, I'll grant, but the value of that is lost when the skin is about all you taste. China Cafe Bistro in Novi is a bit pricier, but the food is so much better in my honest opinion. I stopped after work for a nice quiet dinner. I started with steamed dumplings, chicken mushroom soup and the customary egg roll. Very good with the sweet soy sauce. I then had Chicken Gai Kow. Its been a year since we've last been here and now I remember why... Decided that on a snowy night, it'd be a good idea to warm up with some general tsos and curry chicken! Upon arrival, I dove into the curry chicken and much to my chagrin there must've been some type of translation issue. Apparently, in south lyon chinese, chicken means onion. Sometimes one may exagerrate... not on this. The meal was literally entirely onion. I attached photos to show what I was served. In order of abundance: onion, green onion, liquid, french fries (yeah, I don't know what the hell they are thinking either,) chicken. FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU. FOOL ME TWICE... WONT BE FOOLED AGAIN ;-) Avoid this place like the plague. When I brought it to their attention they offered to make it again for 5 dollars off... yeah, because I want to drop another penny in this toilet. I've been going to Fortuna occasionally since I was very young and it's always been pretty typical for a Chinese restaurant. Egg rolls are great, won ton soup and fried rice are great. This trip we tried orange chicken for the first time and it was delicious. I'm actually writing this review so that I remember to get orange chicken the next time we come. Reason for four stars is that it's kind of pricey (especially to add a protein to fried rice), they don't give you the sweet rolls with carry out orders, and my husband couldn't figure out how to get fried rice rather than white rice with your food. read more

"Special hours because of covid" Ok, no worries. Whelp when I walked in, I saw someone sitting waiting for their order. So I ask "how's the food here?" She replied, "It's a hit or miss." Sooooo I guess I was a miss! MAJOR! I ordered Generals Tso chicken, honey chicken, egg rolls, crab Rangoon and noodles. So the food smells amazing! Looks even better! Sauces are on point! Buuut, chicken was hard, like over cooked hard. Thick in breading. But not super hot like it was just cooked either, for a place that was just opening up for the day. (mind you I pulled up right at 2pm so there's no way it was sitting too long.) The noodles, that looked like Roman noodles, where hard and taste like they were from the night before and were sitting in the fridge covered with plastic. Gross. Egg rolls, well I love ones filled with cabbage and bean sprouts, but these had a funny taste to them. Not a fan. Crab Rangoon how could you mess this up? Umm over cook it! The inside you can tell was actually a good, but of course it was over cooked. But they were HOT! You can tell they were just cooked. Compared to the other warm food I received. Oh the white rice! That was fresh and hot! Hhhh So I guess this was a big miss for us, total we spent $37.00 and some change, Completely not worth it. We ordered take out from Fortuna Inn on Memorial Day. Kudos to them for being open on a holiday, but that's about the only thing good that I can say about them. Easily the worst Chinese food I've had at least in the past 10 years. If I had the choice between their food and airline food, I might actually choose airline food. That's how bad it was. We ordered the following items: -Hot & Sour Soup: This would've been good except they used too much thickening agent-- either flour or corn starch... to the point where the flavor of the thickening agent overwhelmed the flavor of the soup. -Happy Family: The flavor was ok. Typical Happy Family has beef, chicken, shrimp, scallops, and sometimes even squid. Fortuna Inn's Happy Family was just beef, chicken, and tiny, tiny bay scallops. Where's the shrimp?!? -Pork Lo Mein: Has a nice kick of ginger to it and flavor-wise was pretty good. But the noodles were skinny rice noodles. Since when were lo mein noodles skinny? I wonder if they mixed up our order for Singapore noodles? -Sweet & Sour Pork: Significantly overfried... the breading was so hard I couldn't even pierce it with a metal fork. Also, each chunk was mostly breading with very, very little actual meat inside. I felt pretty ripped off on this dish. -General Tso's Chicken: Flavor was pretty good, but the breading had gone completely soggy. This is acceptable for a Chinese buffet, but it really should've been more fresh and at least a little crunchy considered it ordered it take out and should've been made fresh. -Vegetable Fried Rice: This was ok, can't complain about this one. And despite being pretty bad, they're not cheap! Not a good combination. read more

I don't know what it is about South Lyon but it really struggles to have decent quality Chinese Food for as many places as it has. This has got to be the worst Chinese food I have had in years....and it is the most expensive. Not worth it at all. My husband got the General Tso and I got the orange chicken.
