We have been frequent customers for years. My husband used to bring his suppliers and company staff from Hong Kong, but this last experience might just be last time we go there. When we arrived, there was no host and it was several minutes before anyone came to seat us. Dinner was just as disappointing as our lack of a host. The wonton soup seemed watered down and the wontons had very little filling. Instead of chicken and vegetables, I received a plate with intestines, chicken and shrimp. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. My husband ordered fried rice as it is usually tasty, but the rice seemed overcooked and very clumpy as was my side serving of fried rice. The place looks like it needs a good cleaning. The dust is years worth of dust and is very thick. The restrooms also needed tending to as my restroom has lots of toilet paper on the floor. I guess we have overlooked its shortcomings for years, but since I was complaining about the food, I might as well include its great need of cleaning and attention. We both got wonton soup and spring rolls ... got 2 entrees and shared mala green beans yummmmmm. And human shrimp. The evening started off well with a large round table for six of us. We were seated in the front room near the bar. The telephone did not stop ringing and echoing through the room and was very distracting and difficult to talk. As far as food, the Peking duck was dry and cold with no wraps. The orange chicken was a smaller portion than normal. We asked for knives for the chicken and duck, they never arrived. The three other dishes we ordered were fair. My family left mid dinner and my son and I were finishing and an older woman came over and started throwing dishes into the dishpan to clean the table. We were still eating and it was rude. We loved the Springboro location and have visited this location a few times and the consistency if off. We got take out from China Cottage recently and enjoyed it. We tried crab rangoons (comes with 6), chicken & broccoli, and a chicken noodle stir fry. Portions were large and the food was tasty. Had take-away for an extended family meal. Everyone enjoyed their entrees'. The fried rice was missing a lot - I didn't understand why they called it fried, seemed the only difference was that it had some kind of pink coloring. In my experience on both US coasts, fried rice has veggies, diced chicken or pork and peas ~ theirs had nothing but a pink hue; I don't know, maybe it's a Midwestern thing. China cottage Atmosphere: It's surprisingly big in the inside with tons of seating. No wait. Staff are really fast but less interactive. We sat by the kitchen so it was pretty loud but fine. They have a fish pond out side but the fish weren't moving and kinda concerning since it's pretty cold outside haha Meal: Did the complete dinner option with the entrees that included a soup and a spring roll. We got lo mein with chicken and sesame chicken. The lo mein was good and large size. Sesame chicken had good flavor but the chicken itself was in very small tiny bite size and some pieces were just the breading (probably would not get again). Other people's pictures of the sesame chicken are accurate in size and shape of chicken pieces. Would go again but not order the same dishes and try something new, luckily the have a huge menu so there are plenty of options to choose from for a second round! read more

Living in the Cincinnati area for years, I never found any Chinese food that was any good. Moving back here made me excited when I thought about China Cottage. BEST Chinese ever. Spicy Triple Delight is my go to. And every serving is big enough for at least two meals! You can share, or carry home for tomorrow. While that's my go to, everything on the menu is great. It's fun to go with a group, and eat family style trying some of everything.... Outside the restaurant looks like a steakhouse (which it was in a former life) but beautiful and clean inside. My lunch today was outstanding in every way. I ordered the lunch special that came with creamy chicken soup, fried rice, and garlic chicken. The soup was served hot and was very tasty. Big, big fan of China Cottage! The restaurant itself it's super spacious with a lot of seating, so we have never personally waited for a table even though they have been very packed at times - the tables turn fairly quickly. The staff is all super nice and helpful and willing to listen to any accommodations you may be asking for. As for the food... haven't tried anything I don't like yet - BUT, I will order the Mala green beans with pork (extra spicy) every single time! It is so good and the spice level is perfect, even when kicked up a notch above regular. The pork is perfectly cooked and tastes SO GOOD. Gave me serious salmonella food poisoning. I ended up and inpatient at the hospital as a result. Went with a friend, they made us and several others wait an inordinately long time to be seated, the waitress couldn't get away from the table fast enough and had to call her back more than once. I already felt rhe place was a little dicey after these two things, but about an hour after leaving there I became violently ill and had all the earmarks of food poisoning. I thought it would go away after a day or two, but by the third day of missing work, I was so weak and worn out from being ill so profoundly and for so long, I had to go to the ER. I was so sick, my BP and heart rate were life threatening and so was admitted. After three more days in the hospital, I was finally able to keep down broth and only broth. I had my leftovers in my car (a friend who drove me because I couldn't walk on my own grabbed them from the fridge) and the hospital sent them to be tested. Came back with salmonella, probably during to poor kitchen practices and allowing cross contamination. I looked them up on the county health department website and sure enough, a week earlier, they'd been warned about cross contamination with their chicken and not sterilizing their knives and cutting boards between uses. Stay away from this place. They're not even remotely concerned with the food they serve nor the health of their customers.​​ read more

When you look at the reviews check when they were submitted, I don't think there's been a good one for a while. Rude is the #1 descriptor of this place. The host didn't look us in the eye, no smile, no welcome, and did not say one word to our party on the way to the table. He literally plopped the menus on the table and walked away. The server never welcomed us, he did not smile, there were no pleasantries at all. What do you want to drink? What do you want to order? I asked for a ginger mojito he said they didn't have it when it was clearly the featured drink. Portions are huge but all the food arrived cold to lukewarm. Broccoli was just flat out cold. It was Valentine's Day so not sure what the problem was. The General Tso's chicken was ordered extra spicy but in fact had not one single pepper in it. The orange chicken had dried orange peels in it but no fresh oranges. The freeze dried orange peels were impossible to chew so just spit those out. How disappointing. Not one person offered a hello, goodbye, or thank you and that includes the manager standing at the door on the way out. Wow. I've been here about four times. Not once. Has anybody ever really been polite. In fact, they look at you in disdain as if they don't want you there. I've had their shredded pork which was really good, but the rudeness that exudes from each person's body there overrules the good food. China Cottage is one of our favorite places to eat. We have gone there every year for our anniversary. We go throughout the year too. I get the chicken and vegetables or the sampler. This was once one of the best places for higher quality Chinese in the Dayton area, but with their new ownership it is considerably lower quality than before. The traditional menu is gone, partially absorbed into the photoshopped new menus, the first sign that something was wrong. This place had a good Tiki feel before, but while the tiki style decorations are still there, the options are completely gone. One server said they don't even have Zombies (a drink) anymore, another said they did. The staff doesn't even know what they have on the menu. Someone said they changed ownership, which is sad since this was a great place, now it is mediocre. We won't come back, North Village (Dayton), and Uncle Yips (Cincy) have better quality and real Chinese food. Very sad to see this Dayton institution become a shell of its former self. read more

Great place for Chinese in the Dayton area. Sometimes seems understaffed, but never has an affect on te quality of the food served. Seated right away, had to wait a while for drinks and for each course but it was nice to have conversation and not feel rushed. Got 2 free spring rolls for the wait for our food which wasn't terribly long. Place is well decorated but almost every table around us had dishes left on it (again, thinking a staffing issue). Sooooo.....sad. This was always my go to Chinese restaurant in Dayton but has gone down bit by bit over the last 3-4 years. Today was probably my last take out order.....ordered two orders of pot stickers (usually excellent) but received no dipping sauce with either.....ok, stuff happens, I can let that slide. Also ordered Moo Shu Beef, which their menu says is served with crepes. What I got was Moo Shu Beef served with mexican flour tortillas. Not even close to what was listed in the menu. No one confuses flour tortillas (heavy) with crepes (light). I think my biggest problem was when I called them to voice my disappointment I was basically told that the menu on line must have been wrong and that they've been selling mexican crepes for years. I call BS on that because I've order them in that timeframe and these were not the same item. Got the run around by the staff.....no manager could be troubled to pick up my call and hear me out and they offered nothing but excuses instead of taking the time to make me feel like they wanted my business. I'm very sad because I've been a loyal customer of theirs for about 20 years and have never been treated this badly. As much as I love their food, I'm not sure if I can ever order from them again. It's not the food quality as much as it is the lack of ownership when I called to talk with them. Did not feel in any way like a valued customer. Guess this explains why their ratings have been going down in the past year. They've really lost sight of what's made them successful. It was presented really well. The spring rolls, crab Rangoon and bbq pork were really good. We got the Kung Pao Shrimp (4/5) it was good but lacked the flavor punch I was looking for. For ten years, our favorite Chinese restaurant has been China Cottage in Springboro. Last night was our first visit to the 48 location in Centerville. The menu offered far fewer selections than we were accustomed to and had eliminated a number of the favorites we enjoyed so much. The menu was hard to read, artistic, but with item information that was disorganized and seemingly incomplete. We ordered Crab Rangoon that was wonderful, but served with plastic cups of fruit sauce that tasted commercially made, less flavorful and oversweet, along with commercial plastic pouches of mustard, bitter. My General Tao's chicken was served in surprisingly large pieces. Most turned out being so tough I could not bite through them. Since we were not given knives, and our server was seldom available to ask, I was left with pulling unchewed chicken from my mouth, once. I avoided multi-bite sized pieces after that... about half my serving. The flavor was very good, however. One of our company ordered cashew chicken that tasted bland, a little disappointing. The cashews were tasty. The other of our three ordered chicken and noodles. She reported that it was ok. Her favorite part was the robot carrying to-go orders from the kitchen to the front. Service was mediocre and inexperienced. Wait times for food felt long. Our server disappeared for long periods, was awkward in placing our food on the table and in removing dishes when we were finished. He did bring us to-go containers for those uneaten portions we chose to take home. We were seated in an area where loud conversations were distracting and continued through most of our meal. Having been accustomed to the excellence we always experienced at the Springboro store, we were pretty disappointed. After some discussion, decided we would not return. read more
