This has become our favorite local Chinese place. In all honesty, it is on the higher price end for Chinese takeout, but it's well worth it. Our favorites are the shrimp lo mein, the Szechuan chicken, and chicken fried rice. The lo mein is extra special because they use a ton of garlic! This is right up my alley, but if you're sensitive to garlic, take this as a warning. The restaurant itself is very pretty, but I've only dined in once. IF I were a NY snob, I'd say that this highly-rated Dayton Chinese food option is no waaaaaaaaaaaaaay nearly as good as some more basic places back home, but since I'm not (or at least TRYING to have a more open mind!!) I'll say that this was definitely one of the better Chinese dining experiences I've had in the Dayton area!!! We arrived at about 1pm on a Sunday, and our choices were limited to their lunch menu, which was fine (but I do want to come back and try the more extensive dinner menu I've read about here on Yelp) Our group's choices included a couple of General Tso chicken entrees, cashew chicken, sweet and sour chicken, a beef and veggie dish, and my spicy eggplant entrée. Not the best version of the eggplant dish I order just about anytime I find it on the menu, but not bad either. The lunch entrees included soup (their hot and sour was GREAT!!) and portions were very generous. We never felt rushed, and service was great, even on a VERY busy afternoon!! Prices were also very reasonable for what we ordered. I loved the feel of this place!! All sorts of nooks and crannies and tons of great décor really "set the scene," and definitely elevate the experience from a visit to any "standard" Chinese restaurant in the area. Away like the food and portions here, EXCEPT, today I got my usual Cashew Chicken, and it was not good, even mediocre.

The best Chinese around short of going to Chinatown in a major city! Unfortunately for the time being they are only open for takeout and it is just not the same. At Far Hills staff running out of restaurant nearly took me out with door. He apologized. Then I'm pressured for a tip. I drove across town to pick it up myself. Got home chicken was tough. I could hardly chew it. Springboro location is dearly missed. I never had any bad service. General Tso was always top notch. You need to do better. Fyi if I eat in the restaurant you get a big tip if treated well. Husband found hair in chicken breading. Never eating your food again ... gross. read more

Forced to drive to this location as they closed the Springboro restaurant. The chicken in Springboro was tender and juicy and I nice golden brown color. In Centerville it was dry and tough. Have been coming to the Far Hills location for years and have always been happy with the food and service. Yesterday's visit was great as well. I had General Tao's, husband had pepper steak, and we also split a chicken lo mein so we'd have some meals to take home. Meat was tender and everything was flavorful and delicious. Server was polite and attentive. Also, I like getting the soda drink in the bottle, with the ice in a separate glass so I can take home what I don't finish (and not water it down with ice). The decor is pleasing and wasn't loud despite quite a few full tables. Reasonably priced especially relative to everything else these days. Overall, our favorite spot for Chinese food. read more

That's a pretty bold statement and after having lunch with one of my all time favorite Yelpers, and yes it's the very same Libby V., I would certainly agree. This is a classic, slightly kitschy, slightly classy, old school Chinese American restaurant that's housed in an old English Tudor style former Steak And Ale. Their menu is full of the classic American Chinese comfort foods that you'd expect to see. There's also an Authentic Chinese menu available but sadly, there are no descriptions or photos. In any case, let's talk about the food here. I stuck with my favorites for my first time visit and found everything to be good, real good. Mai Tai - Cold, refreshing and delicious. Nice kick to it too. Crab Rangoon - A pretty solid choice with good creamy crab flavor and a decent portion size for the money. Hot and Sour Soup - Good depth of flavor with a nice peppery taste. Kung Pao Chicken - Plenty of tender moist flavorful chicken but could have had a little more peanut and chili peppers. Great food, great atmosphere and some interesting conversation. Came here with a friend and had a great meal. Appetizers were pretty standard, but both the cottage chicken and the pork in garlic sauce were delicious. The best Americanized Chinese I've had in a while. Service was a bit leisurely but not slow. So I was pretty surprised to look it up on Yelp afterwards and see it the significant number of mediocre reviews. Maybe we got lucky and came on a good day, maybe we got better service because my friend is Taiwanese and spoke with the staff in fluent Mandarin... either way, I'll be back again the next time I'm in the Dayton area. read more

First time getting takeout here. Mixed reviews from family. Tasty and crispy sweet sesame tofu, but very bland and oily eggplant. Thin lo mein noodles tasted good but I'm used to them being thicker like udon. Will come back for sesame tofu. read more

Excellent!! First, the restraunt is expertly decorated. You truly feel like you're in China, little from the little statues to the red columns. Now, the food is very good. My BF and I went this past weekend. It was somewhat busy but we were seated right away. Pleasant waitress and nice atmosphere. Had to ask for some soy sauce and knives to cut our food but all in all it was a good experience. Food was good. We had the egg drop soup and spring roll as appetizers and I had the shrimp and vegetables and my BF got the Szechwan chicken with fried rice. There were tons of food left over so we got boxes to go. My wife vomited afterwards...three times. The dumplings tasted rancid. The chicken and broccoli had a different after taste. The beef was chewy. I ordered the duck and the skin was rubbery and the duck tasted like it was fried in dirty oil. I actually ordered the duck to go but after a quick taste I dropped it in the garbage can in the front. I'm giving it two stars because of good service and food looked good. Fortunately I was being reimbursed for this and didn't feel like complaining. My husband and I do really enjoy China cottage. This is a solid choice for Chinese food in the area, regardless of the location (as there are several!). Stopped in here on an impromptu trip out in Kettering. At 7pm on a Friday night, we were seated immediately, which was awesome! Not so awesome was the service. We sat without anyone coming to take even a drink order for 15 minutes, even though waiters were in the area. It was like we had been forgotten. We had to flag down someone to get drinks. Service afterwords was average. Food was good, we got a beef and broccoli to split. The beef and broccoli here is always a good choice--nice amount of beef and the broccoli is cooked just right so that it's got some bite to it. Most of the entrees here are large enough to split. Or if you want to have your own, be prepared for leftovers!My only critique here is that it took about 40 min to come out to the table and the restaurant didn't appear extremely busy. Overall, solid choice. The location in Springboro has consistently had better service, and will likely be the one we will continue to frequent instead of this one. read more

They are always the best in Chinese food around. I love both the Kettering's and Centerville locations. I've been dining or getting carryout from China Cottage since I was 8 years old and there's nothing better in my opinion. Preparation is always fast. Recipes executed almost perfectly every time. I love their beef lo mein, their pineapple pork(you can choose another protein option) is more similar to what their sweet and sour chicken was when I was little. General Tso's is always the bomb, and if you need something light I suggest the chicken with vegetables or the Moo Goo Gai Pan. Last but not least, their creamy chicken soup heals the soul when you're not well. The spring rolls are also pretty good. I do miss the little chicken drums they used to give you when you ordered lunch but these are the times we live in now. The people who work there are very nice and kind. Great place to go for quality food at a incredible price and you get so much food. We ate for 35.00 and had so much food we had soup entree and a appetizer. Really nice setting with more than enough seating to be comfortable either for a date or a large party. They have a fully stocked bar that you can choose from. Finally came to China Cottage over the weekend and left pretty disappointed. Being in a big cool looking building and around for such a long time I was eager to try it out. We came in and were seated right away. It wasn't busy at all at the time but we waited quite some time for our server to even come. The food came out and we didn't even get our drinks yet as she forgot them. My appetizer also came out much later then the entrees. The waitress apologized numerous times as she had to of realized the service wasn't good. Overall the food was solid, and the prices are good, but the service left a lot to be desired. As always one of my favorite Chinese restaurants! Me and my friends missed brunch so we decided to get lunch here. This is by far one of the best looking china cottages in the area. We sat at the bar as usual. I ordered the beef with garlic sauce which came with veggies and rice. Sooooo good! My friends had the beef and broccoli. We also indulged in some sake as well! China Cottage has THE BEST lunch available daily (not just M-F like most places). For $9.99 you get soup, rice, and the main course. The soup was a creamy chicken soup, which on a cold day was very welcoming. I had the fried rice and pepper steak. The entree is served on a platter and they give you a huge bowl of rice. I ate it for 3 days! My friend got the garlic chicken which I will most definitely get next time. Awesome food at a very reasonable price! This restaurant and it's other locations are a long time staple for Chinese cuisine in Dayton. Great food, good service and reasonable prices are what you can always expect here. The lunch special is good, but if you have never been come for dinner, the dinner menu is terrific. Tonight I had the combination lo-mein dinner which comes with soup and a spring roll. I love the walnut chicken though it is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. The lo-mein is really good too, the sauce makes it, along with a little chili oil to spice it up a bit.
