Dirty and dingy inside. Food was terrible. General Tso and Sesame chicken dry and over cooked small pieces of chicken that was pretty much all coating. It was supposed to be chicken... but questionable what parts were used. I never write reviews, but before you drop $100 like we did...Don't! The older woman there also was so rude and bothered by me picking up food 1/2 hour before closing and that I had the nerve to ask for the dipping sauce for eggrolls. She said that is not included?! I asked since when? She said since it is expensive. She talked to the worker behind the plastic curtain in a different language and it was obvious they were talking rudely about me as she peeked around the curtain to look at me. I ran to my car to get my credit card and came to purchase a few and told by her she cant do it by credit card! I should have told her to take the food back and refund me as it was shocking to be treated so horribly as a customer. But I had hungry kids in the car. Tucked away in a strip mall type plaza, China Garden is near Straks grocery. Parking is ample and access easy. The restaurant appears to possibly be family owned which, being blunt, I think we should all try to support these small businesses as they are being replaced by more and more chains especially in the area where China Garden is located. There are several booths and tables when you go inside. I see people dining in on a regular basis, in my case, I do take out. Menus are also outside the door on the right, possibly carried over from the pandemic days when this business valiantly kept their doors open and had a very, very well organized process for picking up on the other side of a screen type door - right where those menus still are today. I know as I picked up food there many times and know several neighbors and friends did too as we were determined, like many, to help these small establishments stay afloat during such an alarming time. I tend vary my menu choices, the latest choice has been shrimp chow mei fun, shrimp egg rolls and of course, the ragoons. Especially this time of year, I also enjoy the egg drop soup. Shrimp egg foo young is another favorite. Over the years and to this day (I picked up an order yesterday), the food has always been freshly made, abundant (I got 3 meals from the shrimp chow mei fun which is typical for me from any entree I order from China Garden) and more than reasonably priced. While I have seen other places skimp on food portions , ingredients and increase prices, I have not seen this from China Garden. I see them go the extra mile to provide value and quality. They are all very courteous, friendly and kind. The thank you that I always receive is genuine. All and all, they are a class act and I am glad that I have them as a dining option. read more

Let me start by saying the veggies were super fresh and crisp. From there, I can definitely die happy never eating here again. I ordered the chicken and mixed vegetable lunch special with a side of plain fried rice. By plain, they mean strange yellow rice. No egg, no peas, just colored rice. I wish I had steamed rice instead. Egg drop soup was better than other fast Chinese restaurants as it wasn't too salty. Other than that, it was a pretty forgettable lunch. read more

just left this establishment I was hungry and when you are hungry, you are usually less picky. The veggie spring rolls were decent but the fake fried rice was inedible. The rice was not fried, It was mushy and smelly and orange. I attempted to call first so I would not have to post this but the owner got irritated and said," I don't know why everyone is complaining about the Fried Rice... well it's nasty, greasy and it smells like you put your foot in it! literally. Horrible Horrible... I would make my work enemy eat this because it would be the best punishment ever. One of the better Chinese food places around...The pork fried rice tastes fresh and delicious...The crab rangoons are good and tasty..Their sweet and sour sauce is excellent..Mongolian Beef and lo mein are both winners as is the sweet and sour chicken..Only slight complaint is that I've had better egg rolls but not to say these aren't good..They ARE good and I've had many more worse egg rolls in the past The Mongolian beef pieces have a very nice spice to them..very tender too read more

We usually order out but on this day, my three boys and I decided to eat inside. As soon as we walked in...we were greeted by a young girl (4 years old) who was sitting in a booth putting puzzles together...she asked my boys if they "wanted to play" and of course, they said "yes"...they all sat in the booth and worked on putting a couple of puzzles together (this little girl is always there so I'm assuming she is the daughter of the owner). As they were playing, I ordered our food...two orders of sweet and sour chicken and an egg roll. The food was out very quickly and as always, the food was good. The little girl decided to eat with us, which was fine as I told the "mother/owner" that "it was absolutely ok for her to do so" ... We had fun and at the end of it all ... well after she took the boys to see all the fish in the fish tank (kinda cool, nice size with alot of fish) ... the owner gave all the kids popsicles. Boys had fun, the little girl was cute, the owner/mom was very kind, and the service and food were pretty good... They were very busy throughout our time there as several folks were coming in and out to place and/or pick-up orders... I can't think of a better spot for Chinese food in Winfield. read more

This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant! So many places I have been to lately have not been consistent. Mostly, I get food drenched in soy sauce or very runny moo goo gai pan sauce. The seating area was clean as was the restroom. The food was cooked fresh to order and that made an incredible difference to the places we had been frequenting. I had chicken mai fun and moo goo gai pan and crab ragoons. The flavor of the mai fun was fabulous. Fresh, salty, and the noodles had great texture. The moo goo gai pan sauce was thick and egg-like. My fiancée ordered shrimp fried rice and the shrimp looked delicious not the usual kind where the shrimp are tiny and flavorless. I am not a fan of fried rice so I did not eat it and my fiancée said it was alright. read more

I'm not sure why this restaurant has bad reviews. I have been here twice now. Both times the food has been so good! It's very fresh and they follow all special directions without complaint. To clarify the previous comment this restaurant is in Crown Point. I wished the food was better and that same woman/owner is incredibly rude. She doesn't wash her hands after she takes money and then drops your egg roll which I am sure if a health code violation. Also she doesn't seem to know how to count back change. Order Bourbon chicken my husband ordered General Tso's chicken and we both got the same sauce. I wished I could be sure that I actually ate chicken, looked more like mystery meat. I took it up to the counter and s=asked where the pineapple onion and green peeper were hiding. The man behind the counter was rude and could have cared less. The food here is TERRIBLE. It is not appetizing and both of our dishes had an overwhelming amount of onions. There was very little meat and vegetables, and just a big mouthful of onions. The teenage boy that took our order was very rude. This boy also had his computer set up at one of the customer's tables. I feel that when restaurant workers occupy one of the customer's tables, this appears very unprofessional. Second time ordering from the place, first time when they first open wasn't impressed with combo fried rice. Rice was a little hard and meat was not fresh. Second time order sesame chicken again my fault for given a second chance. Took ten minutes chicken was difficult to eat, it seem like it was freezer burned be heat, which made it very difficult to eat, again rice was cold. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE!!!!!!!!!! If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. The lady that took my co-worker and My order was just plain mean to us. Did not say hello, and had a nasty look on her face the whole time we ordered. Then, we tried being nice to say thank you when she gave us our food, she gave a dirty look. She then sat in the booth behind us talking loud on speakerphone with the volume up. We basically got rice and a couple little pieces of food for the lunch special. She even took food off the plate when she was plating someone's. She cooks in flip flops.....GROSS! I've been in there before where we had to ask the worker to ask their family member who was sitting in the booth without shoes on....GROSS AGAIN.... to stop talking so loud on her phone. We couldnt carry on a conversation, because she was so loud. I'm not sure what happened, because this used to be a great place. It has gone down the tubes over the last couple of years! There are plenty of other places to eat, so needless to say, we won't be dining there anymore. You can't enjoy your food while looking at peoples bare feet and listening to their loud conversations. First time ordering from this restaurant. Our family used to order from another chinese restaurant for years that had wonderful traditional chinese food, but the owners retired. I guess I am comparing China Garden to what we used to get. I would order again from China Garden because the food tasted pretty good, but I would ask for specific things to be included or left out of my items. We ordered: SHRIMP EGG ROLLS: tasted good, but they should be called cabbage egg rolls with a piece of shrimp. All cabbage with just one very small piece of shrimp in the entire egg roll. SHRIMP FRIED RICE: Tasted pretty good, but again not much shrimp. Also, filled with peas and carrots. Shrimp fried rice is not traditionally made with peas and carrots -- these are filler items that restaurants include when they don't want to spend the money on traditional ingredients that may be more expensive (talking here from my own restaurant working experience). SHRIMP CHOP SUEY: Tasted pretty good. Large amount with more shrimp in this dish, and chinese vegetables, though one person thought it was lacking in some of the traditional chinese vegetables. However, it was filled with sliced yellow onions. Again, this is not a traditional ingredient for chinese chop suey, but used as a filler ingredient to account for not using more traditional more expensive ingredients. PEPPER STEAK WITH ONIONS: Beef tasted good, but this was just overwhelmed with sliced yellow onions, and did not have much green pepper. Green peppers are more expensive than yellow onions, so again the onions were used as a filler ingredient not as a complement to the onions. Both the SHRIMP CHOP SUEY and the PEPPER STEAK did not have much sauce if you plan to put this over white rice, so I would ask for extra sauce if you order these dishes. As I said, I would give China Garden another chance, but I would ask them to tailor the dishes to our likes. If they were not agreeable to doing this, we would try somewhere else. read more
