Okay so if I had to pick a place I would eat for the rest of my life this would probably be one of my go-to's. If I could, I'd write this 10 stars and I'll explain to you why. Food was decent. I had the lunch special of Sweet and Sour Chicken. Also had the wonton soup and pork fried rice. Service and soup were good. Everything else was fair to average. On the bland side. I enjoy the food here but I am tired of their terrible waiter he invades everyone's personal space he touches people on the shoulder or arm he doesn't write down orders and misses things he tries to pull the menu out of our hands before we're done ordering doesn't wait for you to hand it to him and he puts his hand inside your to go box before giving it to you also opens the Togo bags for teriyaki sticks by putting his entire hand inside it. This was very satisfying and overall a positive experience. Plenty of parking, and a location convenient to Rt 91, GCC, and downtown Greenfield. Friendly and accommodating staff and prompt service. Having lived most of my life in Northern Massachusetts, I have a particular fondness for old school Americanized Chinese comfort food. There was no shortage of these places when I was a kid, but they are increasingly hard to find (& nonexistent in San Diego, where we live now.) On a blustery drive from NYC to Stowe, Yelp lead us to this little gem of a restaurant on a country road. Bonus: we got there in time for the lunch special (every day before 3PM) -- a great value & many options. China Gourmet has been a fixture in Greenfield for decades and has consistently dished out really good quality Chinese food. They have a pretty extensive menu that includes a Japanese selection as well, which I haven't yet tried. Their prices are on par with other area restaurants, so there is nothing shocking there. They also offer a full bar with some great tropical specials. Takeout is available. They have their own parking lot with handicapped spaces, and their business is also handicapped accessible. If you are looking to read a review written by the Cultural Cuisine Authenticity Police, this review is not for you. One of us may or may not have spent a lot of time traveling all of the prefectures in Japan, and the other may or may not have traveled in most of the Chinese provinces, but both of us definitely do understand that so-called authenticity is entirely revealing of the beholder's pretension. No, the food served at this restaurant on Rte. 2A in Greenfield MA does not feature regional variances (no lotus root, nattō, 100 year old egg, or pickled jellyfish on the menu that I recall) and this is fortunate because rural Americans don't usually order these things or tip well when they are served. So, take this review for what it is. China Gourmet is a great restaurant! I've never been disappointed with the food there. I've eaten there on many Christmases but far more takeout-in-the-living-room evenings have featured China Gourmet than any other restaurant around here. They have a decent assortment of pickled options in their sushi menu (yum!) and very good vegetarian selections on the Chinese menu. My go-to fave is the Chinese eggplant and tofu. It's just usually not a bad idea to go to this restaurant or order take out. So, dear browser, do yourself a solid and ignore the bizarre reviews suggesting we should all be transported overseas when dining at a restaurant in rural New England. Lunch did not start off well, the wonton soup was lukewarm, only mildly flavorful and the addition of lettuce rather than the usual Chinese greenery was a definite turn off. Things began to look up, when my Spicy Pork, green bean dish arrived. The pork, green beans and mixed vegetables were perfectly cooked, absolutely delicious; the accompanying spicy brown sauce was spot on. Were it not for the pork dish this would be and entirely different review. If they can correct the soup mishap the dining experience would have warranted 4 stars. The dearth of decent Chinese restaurant in our area is palpable. With lowered expectations we ventured to China Gourmet. Rickey our host was friendly and provided us with quick service and our requests for condiments. I had the General Tso chicken which was very good and as spicy as I had requested. My Wife had Chicken with mushrooms and snow peas pods. Also very good. The entree portions are ginormous so plan ahead about what you want as starters. The ladies sitting next to us had the experience to order combo plates a great suggestion. My only caveat was the hot and sour soup way too pepper forward not sour and thin. Not bad just not what I am used to. Over all a pleasurable dining experience made even more pleasant by our host Rickey. Highly recommend, however, take note of what I said or plan to get a doggie bag. read more

There's a general aesthetic to their setting and servings. They are set on the more expensive end for what is served. For example, for a nice platter of 12 fried chicken wings, you get halves - drums and wings. Rice came with General Tso's, which was alright- a very small bowl of rice was filled; when asked for another bowl, the next one was significantly not full. Yet, I was charged $2 for the 1 extra bowl of rice. In general, for the portions it was expensive. At least the prices for sushi are alright for what they offer. The bubble tea is expensive and not fresh fruit- it's made with powder. The food quality is alright, and tasty however. One of the waitresses/bussers was not that polite but that could be a language barrier. I was also being stared at quite rudely at some point while trying to locate the bathroom, without being directed or acknowledged, just stared at in silence as they were also heading to the bathroom. Also, it can be a bit disruptive with children running around and trying to get the waiter's attention right in front of you. Though it is cute to interact with children, who grabbed my chopstick papers to throw away, and asked if I needed any help- don't expect service. The place always appears to be run on a shoe string budget, never clean and always in a hurry. I have eaten here upwards of 30 times only to be disappointed in each case. The sushi fish is never fresh and the fish seems to be days old rather than a day old. The fish is possibly frozen for a long period of time, not good. The rice is flavorless and dry. I only tried the sushi a dozen times over a one year period...perhaps it gets better!!! The Chinese food and Thai food always seem to be lacking in quality but not in quantity. Generous portions of mediocre food are brought out very fast. Too fast to ensure that they were made to order. If you're looking for true, traditional, authentic, gourmet Chinese food, this is not your place- They do very Americanized Chinese food, but they do it pretty darn well. We've been ordering takeout from them every month or so for years, and we're always happy with it. They have all the American Chinese menu standbyes, and a handful of things you might not have encountered before. I enjoy their scallion pancakes. They have lots of good vegetarian options as well, beyond the basic steamed vegetables that most places offer. This place used to be really, really good about 17 years ago(!) It was also fairly good about 4-5 years ago. Now it's just not very good at all. They do have a really excellent dumpling sauce, but that's pretty much the highlight nowadays. Everything else is just barely good enough to consider ordering from them a second time. That day I used my CC here, at that time, they said my CC was declined and asked me to put the billing address zip code in, and then it worked. Same day's night, my CC got a fraud charge in Ohio. I doubt if these 2 issues related to each other. After this, I was thinking that usually when your card was declined, you just changed the other card, never needed to input your zip code... Surprisingly solid Chinese food! Comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff, huge menu, reasonable prices, massive portions, balanced flavors, fresh ingredients... if I didn't live so far away, this would be my go-to after Amherst Chinese. The interior is clean and nicely appointed, and the food was seriously spot on. I got a beef in garlic sauce that was some of the best I've ever had. I frequently order things "in garlic sauce" and it's usually slightly sweet with maybe hints of garlicky flavor...nothing particularly discernible. But THIS dish had huge slices of fresh garlic that featured prominently and absolutely permeated every bite with unmistakable garlic flavor. Fabulous! Ryan got a chicken curry with basil which he loved, and his daughter gave thumbs up to her combination dinner of chicken fingers, crab rangoons, pork fried rice and beef sticks. I was shocked at the portion sizes...they were enormous, and we all took loads of food home. Even the egg rolls seemed supersized. In my opinion, the only part of our meal that was better than my beef w/garlic sauce was the vegetable hot & sour soup. It was amaaaazing and I am craving some right now. Beautiful, fresh flavors, not overly starched...some of the best I've had...and I've had a lot of hot & sour soup! Only downsides were the smoothie and perhaps some slight communication difficulties with our server. I was trying to ask which (if any) of their smoothies were fresh and which were from powder...but what I got was a recitation of their menu list of smoothies. Not wanting to risk getting the powdered variety, I declined. Our dining companion opted for the strawberry/banana/coconut...but the waiter repeated it back sans coconut, and despite an attempt to repeat and clarify, it arrived without the coconut. That was a slight disappointment, but not quite as bad as the borderline inedible tapioca pearls which were slimy and gooey and didn't hold their shape. And they were all clumped together about mid-way down on the side of the cup. Very strange. So I would skip the smoothie next time, but the food was otherwise very, very good and definitely warrants a return visit in the not-too-distant future! read more

While visiting the Yankee Candle Flagship Store in Deerfield MA, we decided to have dinner and Chinese was our choice. We checked Yelp and this restaurant was suggested near by. My wife ordered the Tempura chicken and I ordered the Dragon and Phoenix dinners. The restaurant was clean, food came out in a reasonable time and it was hot, plus the service was great. When we go back to the Deerfield area again, I believe we will stop there again. read more

After having dinner here last night I can say that things have improved over the past few months since our last dining experience. The last time we were here we were greeted by rude staff who rushed us through our meal and scolded us for packing our leftovers the wrong way. This time we had great waitstaff who let us take our time and didn't rush us before we were done with our meals. The most significant update on the food here is that they removed their dim sum menu which didn't seem to work the last time we were here. Overall the sushi and entrées were great. What an incredible disappointment! Szechuan shrimp-zero heat, no flavor, shrimp were mushy. I suspect the dish was microwaved. In fact everything ordered tasted microwaved. Lemon chicken looked liked prepackaged breaded chicken . It was so dry and tough that it could have been used as skipping stones in the Connecticut river. The lemon sauce was this weird liquid of bottled lemon juice and some other liquid with a water chestnut and a piece of carrot floating in it. SCARY! Broccoli with garlic sauce- where was the garlic?? I will be using the leftover rice for rice pudding tomorrow. All I can say is never again. read more

UPDATE: The past 2 times my S.O and I have gone to China Gourmet the food has been so very good! I will say their lo-mein has far too less noodle and too much other crud. I have seen it go through changes. I would say it is a good place for Hot & Sour soup, Pork Fried rice and a few other dishes. I am upset that I ordered a drink (expensive) and after taking a few sips I took the umbrella out to put beside my plate and something caught my eye! I leaned in closer and to my horror.... there were a FLY trapped inside my ice cube!!!! I alerted the waiter and they said they would "bring me another". I waited 10 minutes, and then the waiter brought the remade drink. I checked all the cubes and they looked ok. I examined the rest of the drink before drinking. Finished my meal and asked for our bill. When it arrived, I had been fully charged for both drinks!!!!! WHAT!!! I should have had my whole meal reduced as that were gross!!! read more

The best you can expect for a "Chinese food" joint in Western Mass (that also happens to have a sushi menu). During my trip out East to visit the hubby's family for the holidays, I unintentionally ate here twice - once when his father ordered take-out and once when his mother took us there for a Christmas eve dinner. The take-out food was a greasy mess that gave me an MSG headache and made me hungry 30 minutes after eating it. General Tso's Chicken & Orange Chicken: I couldn't tell the difference between them, there was so much sugary sauce and over-battering. I'd say the pieces were 10% chicken, 90% batter. Crab Rangoon: 10% imitation crab, 90% batter and cream cheese. Served with an odd, super sweet and syrupy orange sauce. I secretly liked these if only for the incredible combination of fattiness. Moo Shu Pork: Served with pancakes and hoisin sauce, colorless and bland. Pork Fried Rice: Ultra-greasy but edible. On Christmas Eve, we ate in the restaurant and I was amused to see that everyone who worked there is actually Asian. Of all the people actually eating in the restaurant, I was the only Asian. Then again, I was also the only Asian in the church we attended earlier so I guess it wasn't that much of a surprise... we're not in LA anymore Toto, this is western Mass. I ordered sushi when eating dinner with the hubby's Mom, it was pretty basic and only one piece was chewy. The spicy salmon and tuna rolls were decent and the sushi chefs were generous when I requested two extra cups of eel sauce. My husband enjoyed his roll, his brother liked the sushi dish he ordered and my mother-in-law seemed happy with her shrimp dish. Super friendly service, delicious and not too greasy Chinese food, and moderate prices make China Gourmet (which also has Japanese food), a great place to get take out. Usually, I distrust places which try to combine too many Asian cuisines, but China Gourmet has fabulous food! Inside, it's old-school Chinese. We've gone here now 5 times, and have loved the Singapore Me Fun, and the Sesame Chicken. We also love the sweet and sour chicken, and the curried chicken. They have a wide range of vegetarian options, which is awesome. And, their Japanese food is great! I'm a snob about sushi and it's really, really good. We got a cooked entree: the Spider roll, which was absolutely delicious: no cloying sauce to disguise the fresh, crisp, and delightful flavors. Waiter and customer service are great. They are super friendly and fast. The only complaint I had was that we went there on Christmas, and they told each patron, "Merry Christmas," rather than realizing that the majority of patrons were probably Jewish, as is the tradition (Chinese food on Christmas for Jews, the only thing that's open). That aside, we love China Gourmet. In addition to fresh, delicious food, they have delivery (to Montague, Turners, and Greenfield), and a parking lot. Awesome. read more

The staff couldn't be nicer or friendlier - even the delivery drivers are nice! - and this restaurant is one of the classiest places in the area. But, sadly, the food is mediocre at best. I wish I didn't have to say it was bad. But the food is bad. It's bland. It's entirely tasteless. When I try a Chinese place for the first time, I always try the General Tso's first. Eating China Gourmet's General Tso's is like tasting it from another room - you know there's probably flavor in there somewhere, but you can't quite find it. There was no hint of spiciness. I chalked it up to a bad night, but every dish suffers from the same blandness. Every time I go there, I'm disappointed. The locals LOVE it, though. Maybe they're not sure what Chinese food is supposed to taste like. Greenfield is far, far away from anything else. This place is a gem. I travel to Greenfield/Deerfield about 4 times a year, and get dinner here every time. The food is fantastic. Don't let the other reviews fool you, this is great chinese food. Its very fresh, the vegetables are always amazing, and the meat is actually REAL looking meat. The Mongolian Beef is to die for. I highly recommend it. This really isnt your average greasy american chinese restaurant. Will it standup to Chinatown in NYC? No. But, really, its Western Mass. Nothing will standup to Chinatown.
