    shrimp and pork dumplings

Lao Hu Tong is a new restaurant near Amherst center. It's adorably decorated and while it's a small space, it has a lot of seating. I don't think they accept reservations but we only waited about 10 minutes for a table on a Friday night. The menu is small but they have a few vegetarian options to choose from! I wish they had a veggie soup dumpling option though because soup dumplings are sooo good. Anyways, I got the Hu Tong sesame noodles which were SO good. They have no spice but there is chili oil on the table so you can make it as spicy as you want, or keep plain! They don't sell alcohol! They have some soft drinks and tea instead. Definitely a place worth checking out!

Incredibly authentic Chinese food in the heart of Amherst. The interior is warm and welcoming. The staff is friendly and attentive. And the food is incredible. I had the beef brisket noodle soup and it was soooo good. The soup was packed full of noodles. There is probably half a pound of thick tender noodles. They have such a nice chew and were the star of the soup. The beef was extremely tender and flavorful. The broth was rich with a good amount of chili oil so beware of the spice. The only gripe I had was the marinated egg was full hard boiled instead of a jammy consistency.

Good taste but too expensive to be a daily choice. It should be a good place to go if you are gathering with friends or want to have a formal talk. The service is good.

I absolutely never review restaurants, but I had to make an account to review this one. The food was absolutely amazing. We both got the Brisket Noodle Soup, and it's up there as one of the best things I've ever had. 100% recommend, stop by if you can.

I wasn't expecting this place to become my new favorite Chinese restaurant. But whoa the food was amazing. It's a small intimate space tastefully decorated making the cuisine and ambience blend well together. We started with ChengDu Chicken followed by pork soup dumplings and Jja Jang Noodles. Each dish was great. I can't wait to return!

Impressed by the fine quality and flavors of the food, and pleasantly surprised by the newer stylish interior especially in old town Amherst. We enjoyed several dishes including our favorites the Dan Dan noodles, sesame noodles, minced pork rice and soup dumplings. The spicy cucumbers were also delicious, and both the chicken soup and beef brisket noodles had amazing flavor. The ambiance is warm and casual while the service was efficient. We can't wait to come back again on our next visit to Amherst.

New place in Amherst and it's soooooo good! The soup dumpling are to die for and the soups are so warm and comforting. All of the appetizers are also delicious. The atmosphere is amazing too I love the interior design.

I thought the food over here was very good. The flavors were spot on and my spicy soup was so spicy. That the tip of my tongue was going numb in a good way the reason for four stars instead of five was I was hoping for a little bit more beef and vegetables in the soup, even if I had to pay a a little bit more or something along those lines I gladly would've done it however, for the price that I paid I was very, very happy

Worst noodles ever. I would suggest buy some instant noodles in nearest groceries. The only seasoning in the noodles is soy sauce.

If you order a noodle soup, they'll ask if you want green onions and/or cilantro. After that, just grab any open table and relax. We ordered a variety of dishes. Appetizers: Scallion pancakes: (3/5) nice crispy pancakes with scallions. Dumplings with pork and leeks: (3/5) tender dumplings filled with pork and some leeks Spicy stewed beef noodle soup: (4/5) thick hand pulled noodles in a savory broth topped with vegetables like bok choy and mushroom and some tender beef Hot and sour vermicelli soup: (4/5) very tangy savory broth with tender vermicelli noodle and ground pork. Medium spicy level Biang Biang noodles with pork: (4/5) their signature hand-pulled noodles are sautéed in a medium spicy sauce with pork. Formosa has an affordable lunch menu, and even on busy days has delivered my meal within ten minutes. Don't be astounded yet, because I would easily wait twenty minutes for this food. When their food arrives from the delicious variety of their lunch specials, you will be treated to crispy tofu, a nuanced spice for chili or jalapeño meals, or fresh vegetables that will make you wonder: who is introducing you to the best cuisine that southeast Asia has to offer? Sichuan meals, Mandarin meals, and even with a Miso soup that is vibrant and delicate in flavor, you may not have any difficulty in deciding at all because any meal you choose will be cooked with what tastes like generations of expertise, love, and wisdom. It is not possible to follow a recipe, or a video, or a shopping trip and recreate the food at the level of Formosa, nor at the price of Formosa, and I say this after years of enjoying their meals. If you are in the area and you are hungry, you will want to visit Formosa as it is an unbelievably satisfying trip for almost any person in the continental USA, and likely for international travelers from near and far. Please tip your staff generously and leave a review to share this love--there is no amount of business they can do that will do the history and delight in their food justice. Their food is accessible to the local public, and they also donate to local causes as well. Amherst has more than universities that educate people here, they have restaurants with generations of stories and wisdom in every meal. You'll be amazed at the silky luxury their hot and sour soup is, with a texture matching the fresh micro mushrooms inside. Be prepared and humble, the staff are dedicated, responsible, and attentive to the public as much as they can. I would love to read a book about the story of this restaurant some day.

We've been to a lot of the restaurants in Northampton and decided to jump over to Amherst to try a new to me restaurant. This was a cold and damp afternoon, only a day after a snow storm. Mom was excited to order her Tofu Bahn Mi, but I was really looking forward to a big bowl of hot Chicken Pho and a Summer Roll. Our friend tried the Rice Bowl with Steak and Shrimp and a Bao Bun which was delicious. My mom loved her sandwich. The bread alone was enough to make me decide that I must try one next time. My Pho broth was well flavored. The chicken pieces were slightly smaller than what I'm used to from other places, but there was plenty to enjoy. There was an adequate amount of noodles, basil, sprouts and jalapeños. My Summer Roll, while quite enjoyable, was a little difficult to eat. I'm used to having my roll cut in half and this was served whole. The wrapper started to fall apart at one point, but I made sure that I didn't lose anything. Our friend's bowl was good and filling and we were told that the bun was delicious,

Anything we needed anything, they were happy to help. The chef was also very nice but I didn't ask his name. We ordered the Ginger Tea, Seaweed Salad + Gyoza (vegetable dumplings) to start, along with a small rice. The ginger tea is made with fresh ginger and is slightly sweet, the seaweed salad was authentic. The Gyoza were phenomenal; I asked Peter his advice on fried or grilled and he recommended fried. For the main course, we ordered the Fantastic Roll and the Koala Roll which were heavy hitters. 100% recommended. They have sake and are BYOB, big plus! We came back a second time, and I ordered the same thing: veggie gyoza and Fantastic Roll. My friends daughter loved the veggie dumplings just as much as I did. My friend and her daughter shared the sushi meal, and it came with sashimi that they loved. We also tried their chicken teriyaki appetizer and the meal. The appetizer comes with spicy mayo sauce which came on kebab sticks, and were too spicy for the kids but I thought they were perfect. The meal did not have spicy mayo and was sliced on a steaming platter. It was delicious as well, but I personally preferred the appetizer style. Eric and Peter were amazing servers the second time. I'm more than happy to support this local restaurant anytime I'm in town. Everything was extremely fresh, authentic, and larger portions than most places for an amazing price point.
